However, most people avoid these issues thinking that they are topics best left to professionals. Mental health, psychology and character would be discussed more often in the public sphere except for the fact that professionals have ethical codes that limit their ability to comment on the mental health and psychological traits of people they have or have not met. Nevertheless, many professionals have seen fit to report about these traits in general terms that are detailed enough to equip voters to make their own informed judgements about politicians’ mental health, psychology and character from what they observe with their own eyes and ears. How to interpret these traits in real time and apply professional knowledge about them to politicians and voters is the meat of this website.

Voters are not mental health professionals but those who are willing to study to come to understanding of mental health and psychology basic are smart enough to apply what they learn in this website next time they vote. When that happens, America will be on its way to healing the social/political/education/economic divides that frustrate all Americans. Healing can happen only when judgments about politicians’ mental health and character become normal and supersede the historical values of policy and party loyalty when voting. Change won’t happen in one election or even in one generation, but it will happen if voters get smart about mental health and character as political issues.

PRIDE IS AN OBSTACLE TO UNDERSTANDING THAT LEADS TO CHANGE
Change hinges on open-mindedness. The obstacle to open-mindedness is pride that says, “I already know enough to make good decisions.” This is especially true in politics and religion.

Ability to hear/read and absorb new information will not happen unless there is a willingness to accept that old beliefs are no longer adequate to manage new situations. Sadly, most voters are slow to seek out new information that challenges old beliefs. The exceptions to this rule are independents and crossover voters.

America’s current social/political conflicts are, at root, based on traditional, deeply held beliefs about both politics and religion. Recognizing this, strategies for change must be managed with extreme sensitivity. The kind of change America needs will not happen if people from one end of its social/political/religious spectrums to the other are not willing to sacrifice their political and religious self-righteousness (i.e. pride.) Pride is the primary obstacle that leads to understanding that leads to positive change.

Prideful people have difficulty seeking new information. But loyalty is also an obstacle to seeking or accepting new information that might contradict existing beliefs in the party or religion. For political and religious change, some especially important internal factors include the following

Core emotions about the world: Fear, anger, hope, awe, guilt, shame, and love of country or God all shape how a person hears political or religious arguments. The axiom confirms the principle found in Luke 6:37-41:

Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you…Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

This scripture warns against an attitude of harsh, condemning judgment toward others while self-righteously elevating self as morally superior. Even people who are not religious can understand the wisdom of this warning outside the world of religion.

The “plank” symbolizes pride and self‑righteousness — the gross, distorting attitude that makes me blind to my own sin/wrongdoing while fixating on someone else’s “speck.” The plank can also symbolize other kinds of sins that must be acknowledged internally before someone is qualified to instruct others. The value of this kind of internal integrity far exceeds head knowledge, reason and facts.

The scripture says that spiritual pride is more serious than petty faults (i.e. sound political or religious ideology) found in others. It also says that prideful self-righteousness is an offensive, obstructive character trait that inhibits honest, personal self‑assessment and compassionate, empathetic understanding of the feelings and needs of others. Hypocrisy refers to self-righteousness behaviors that mask inner arrogance, greed, or malice. Again, even people who are not religious can see the wisdom of these principles.

The bottom-line message for would-be political and religious activists is this:

Sensitivity to the core, inner needs of potential converts is more important than being right about policy, intellectual knowledge, logic, reason and facts.

In political and religious activism, sensitivity to the core, inner needs of potential converts is usually the decisive first condition for change; only when people experience genuine empathy does sound policy, knowledge, logic, and evidence have a real chance to persuade.

WHEN CHANGE DOES AND DOES NOT HAPPENS
People rarely change just from hearing better arguments. That fact is true in religion and politics. People change when they feel safe, respected, and emotionally understood. Only then do they relax their defenses and become emotionally ready to consider new information. And then, after they are emotionally ready to entertain new information, how they receive information depends on group identity, sense of belonging, and moral emotions (e.g. guilt, empathy, pride, shame, hope, etc.) These inner factors shape which facts feel believable, and which should be ignored or attacked.

Here are three good rules of thumb about when and how change happens:

Deep change requires that internal emotional and relational conditions be satisfied first; only then is someone ready to accept intellectual arguments that include facts, logic and reason.

If a foundation of trust and psychological safety is not established first, worthy, verifiable facts and reasoning may backfire by harden existing views instead of changing hearts and minds.

These conditions evolve slowly via shared, lived experience (e.g., personal crisis, empathetic encounters, etc.), not just evangelistic rhetoric.

Most political and religious evangelism practices do not follow these principles. Activists always look for a quick response to their logic and reason because they are convinced of the undeniable irrefutability of their logic and reason. In their prideful, self-righteous minds, anyone who refuses to believe as they do is stupid, ignorant or stubborn. This explains why most political/religious evangelism is so unfruitful.

Even though these efforts yield little movement between religions or political parties, evangelism is a fixture in both religion and politics because it energizes believers, reinforces group identity, and signals loyalty — whether or not evangelism measurably grows the flock or the voter base.

This bi-directional dynamic is especially problematic in America’s politically divided culture. Many journalists and academics have tried to explain why America is divided with facts acquired through interviews, focus, groups and polling. One problem with this strategy for gaining understanding is that these research tools are not able to diagnose deep, complex issues like mental health, psychology and character. The bigger problem is that research cannot expose self-righteous pride. Because pride is an internal issue, it is not easily diagnosed.

Strategies for religious and political change that do not recognize how pride affects the change process will be ineffective. Activists must understand how pride in both the evangelizer and person evangelized are indomitable obstacles to positive change.

CONSERVATIVE ACTIVISTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO
Liberals/progressives often frame their views as purely rational to claim the intellectual high ground, while conservatives are stereotyped as more emotionally driven.

Liberals, being more educated, have greater tolerance for ambiguity and nuance in creating policy. They show cognitive flexibility while emphasizing hard facts from a variety of academic disciplines on policy issues such as community mental health, social equity, climate change, immigration reform, and public health science. Key elements of liberals’ perspectives include:

Tolerance for ambiguity: Psychological research finds liberals are generally more comfortable with complexity and conflicting information. This fuels openness to cultural and scientific change, which they interpret as intellectual flexibility.

Evidence as moral anchor: Liberals view data, academic research, and scientific consensus (e.g. climate change, social inequality, etc.) as moral guides and ethical imperatives for creating government policies.

Equity and reform focus: The liberal narrative ties reason to empathy—using evidence to correct social imbalance. This allows them to portray compassion and logic as mutually reinforcing traits.

These perspectives reinforce liberals’ narrative of being empathetic, evidence-based and rational. In effect their “feelings” about policy issues are informed not just by injustices (e.g. poverty, discrimination, education, health, environmental harm, etc.) they see with their natural eyes. Hard facts confirm and reinforce liberals’ empathetic, visceral, heart-felt feelings and mobilize them to create government policies that correct structural injustices. Facts combined with empathy create moral urgency to create change.

Conservatives, on the other hand, because they are much less motivated by hard facts, tend to lean on emotional language around existential issues such as crime, biblical values, security, family, cultural norms and patriotism to evoke urgency and shared identity in the face of threats from liberal progressives. Key elements of conservative rhetoric include:

Threat framing: Liberals are portrayed as eroding moral order (e.g., “woke” policies undermining family/biblical values), national security (open borders, weak policing), and cultural identity (globalism vs. patriotism), creating urgency that says “our way of life is at stake.”

Emotional triggers: Words evoke fear of chaos (e.g. rising crime, destruction of democracy, moral decay, pride in heritage, etc.) making the shared identity feel under siege and worth defending fiercely.

Us vs. them dynamic: Progressives are seen as “elite aggressors” pushing change too fast, contrasting with conservatives as protectors of timeless virtues.

When liberals encounter these forms of conservatism and compare it to their own rhetoric, their self‑image as the rational, educated, and morally mature side of the political divide is confirmed. While liberals think of themselves as “rational, empathetic and data‑driven,” they simultaneously think of conservatives as uneducated, populist, religious, authoritarians. Of course, conservatives who are already sensitive to elitist high-mindedness, easily detect liberals’ attitudes and move farther to the right as a defensive measure. Thus, partisanship increases.

Full of their self-righteousness pride in logic, reason and appreciation for science, liberals fail to see that their carefully curated image as champions of logic, evidence, and scientific reason yields the opposite of its intended effect. Liberal rhetoric is as emotionally charged as the rhetoric of conservatives. It satisfies identity needs for moral coherence and cognitive superiority, just as conservatives’ appeals to faith and tradition satisfy their needs for belonging and stability. For conservatives, belonging and continuity anchor their conservative identity; for liberals, moral coherence and cognitive sophistication play the same psychological role. Each side draws emotional energy from different symbols of righteousness — one from divine or cultural order, the other from enlightened reason and justice.

Both camps filter their rhetoric and policies through sincerely held values. When values are shared, trust, predictability, and good government is the result. When values clash, however, rhetoric escalates, institutions erode, and short-term power grabs replace long-term, stable governance. The content of the motives differs, but the basic psychology at work in liberals and conservatives is the same. These core needs include:

Need for certainty and order: Conservatives often satisfy this through structure, tradition, authority, and clear boundaries, reducing anxiety from ambiguity or chaos. Realistically, good results may not show up in government and in Americans’ lives for years, if not generations. Because of a common belief that democracy is on the threshold of crisis, this reality will be difficult for both conservatives and liberals to accept. Nevertheless, both sides must be willing to humble themselves today and every day or those positive results will never be realized.

ESSENTIALS FOR POSITIVE CHANGE
The goal of this website is to give people who might be open to changing their minds about political partisanship some insights about pride/humility, mental health, psychology and relationships. Then, if they are so inclined, those open-minded people can apply these concepts to their own lives and politics. It is an idealistic goal to be sure, but it is no more idealistic than loving your neighbor as yourself.

Lacking an idealistic vision, positive change in America’s social/political environment will not happen. Unless a majority of voters are willing to accept that they share responsibility for division by voting on the basis of appealing rhetoric, policies, economics and prideful party loyalty instead of voting on the basis of political candidates’ good character traits (i.e. mental health, psychology, humility, etc.), change will not happen.

Conventional explanations (e.g., economics, media silos, policy disagreements, gerrymandering, etc.) of the partisan divide identify structural triggers but miss the emotional/psychological/moral fuel of politics: pride manifest as self-righteous certainty. Pride causes all political groups/parties to view their ideology not just as correct, but as morally superior. This elevates tribal/political conflicts from policy disputes to existential battles—”us vs. evil”— which amplifies intolerance and raises the rhetoric temperature on both sides of the political divide. This thinking is not just unhealthy. It is also a terminal disease in the life of democracy. Fine-sounding exhortations to “tamp down the rhetoric” are meaningless, inconsequential, panaceas for democracy’s demise. Here are two truths about American democracy worth considering:

Hurtful, divisive, partisan rhetoric will not abate until the hearts and minds of both Democrats and Republicans change.

Unchecked partisan pride offers no avenue for love, mutual understanding and respect that leads to unity and bi-partisan cooperation necessary for good, democratic government.

Exposure of America’s self-righteous pride offers a missing, explanatory layer of analysis of hyper partisanship that is overlooked in academia, journalism and political strategizing. Some mental health experts have tried to fill that gap in books and media that attract limited circulation in the American electorate. That means professional expertise on mental health and psychology relevant to politicians has little to no impact on the voting public. The purpose of this website is to educate the voting public with knowledge about mental health and psychology in the context of politics with hopes that a majority of voters will engage in serious self-analysis about their pride and how it influences their party loyalties and voting habits.

America’s dirty little secret is that Democrats and Republicans use pride to solidify party loyalists and evangelize new members. Republicans frame pride as reclaiming lost status—”Make America Great Again” and resistance to “line cutters” (e.g. immigrants, DEIA beneficiaries, educated elites, etc.), whom they blame for white working-class decline, by converting shame to tribal loyalty via authoritarian appeals tied to R-WA/SDO. Democrats on the other hand, lean on a prideful narrative of moral enlightenment exercised through politics. By casting themselves as the party that “stands against bigotry and hate,” Democrats reinforce a personal, positive attitude of elevated intellectual/moral status that resonates affirmatively with educated urban voters, but is interpreted negatively as exclusionary, elitist, and condescending by working‑class voters who align themselves with President Trump and MAGA. This interpretation casts them as victims of Democrats’ policies and elitism.

Although Democratic rhetoric is designed to be egalitarian, it is perceived as contempt — not inclusion by MAGA. Republicans see multi-cultural Democrats as know-it-all teachers who presume to embody the knowledge and standing to grade the morals of Trump and his followers as bigoted and shameful. In their pride, Democrats are blind to the reality that their divisive rhetoric fuels the partisan divide instead of closing it.

Scholars of “political sectarianism” note that the Democrats’ moralized rhetoric intensifies perceptions that Trump and his followers are not just wrong but morally inferior. Of course, this rhetoric increases anger and defensiveness among those being judged and contributes to the widespread perception among Republicans that Democrats see themselves as “the moral party” and MAGA conservatives are bad people.

Trump followers view Democratic moralizing as unprovoked shaming of their values and identity. As victims of Democrats’ judgments, Trump’s followers, see no personal responsibility for self-reflection. Ditto for Democrats who see America as a victim of Trump’s words and actions. For failure of either side to admit culpability, America is in the midst of an escalating civil war of words. But, because no one remembers who fired the first shot, neither side takes responsibility for starting it.

If Democrats are as smart and moral as they imagine themselves to be, it is up to them to take the high road that leads to change. This road has four steps:

Study Donald Trump: Understanding the Man and His Followers with a mind focused on what Democrats have said and done historically to alienate Trump’s followers.

Admit to themselves that their historical rhetoric created the political environment that made the emergence of Donald Trump and MAGA possible.

Admit to themselves, American voters and the world that their prideful rhetoric is divisive.

Look for ways to incorporate “love your neighbor” principles into campaign rhetoric and policy debates.

Democrats will criticize this process as placing undo accountability on them. This is a fair criticism. Both parties should be willing to admit culpability. The arguments against this perspective are found in Donald Trump: Understanding the Man and His Followers. Here are some takeaways that justify Democrats taking the high road:

They are guilty of pride. They need to own it.

The fact that Trump and Republicans are also guilty of pride does not excuse Democrats from doing the right thing of admitting their own pride.

The fact that Trump and his followers are handicapped by fear and shame creates an opportunity for Democrats to practice the egalitarianism they so eagerly preach. If they are champions of people who have disabilities, they should not withhold grace and mercy from Trump and Republicans just because they are judged to be ignorant bigots and fools. Consider the arguments against judging in this link.

The fact that Democrats are not handicapped by fear and shame to the same degree as Trump and his followers are handicapped, confirms that Democrats are uniquely equipped to practice loving their neighbor by practicing the following principles:

                            PRINCIPLES OF LOVING YOUR NEIGHBOR

Don’t let corrupt talk come out of your mouth.

Only say words that are good for building people up.

Focus on edifying speech.

Don’t judge one another.

Don’t let your words make anyone stumble and fall.

Turn away wrath with soft words.

Remember that harsh words stir up anger.

Guard your words to stay out of trouble.

Be sympathetic and love one another.

Be compassionate and humble.

Don’t say or do anything that offends others.

Live in harmony with one another.

Do not be conceited.

Do not be proud.

Be willing to associate with people of low position.

Agree with one another in what you say.

Be like-minded, having the same love.

Be ready to sacrifice your personal interests and your possessions for anyone.

Be one in spirit and of one mind.

Do not murder in your heart.

Do not commit adultery in your heart.

Do not steal.

Do not tell lies or deceive people.

Strive for perfect harmony.

Encourage one another

Be of one mind.

Live in peace.

Live together in unity.

Clearly these are aspirational ways of thinking and acting. More likely they will be associated with good character which is a reward worth the sacrifice of pride.

Only a little mental work is required to imagine what America, and indeed the world, would be like if more people integrated even a few of these principles into their everyday lives and political lives. The questions people who want to make America whole must answer are these:

What sacrifices are you willing to make to make America whole?

Are you willing to make an effort to build these principles into your character?

Are you willing to share these principles with others?

Does your pride stop you from admitting that these principles are not now part of your character?

Here are six famous quotes about character worth considering when thinking about sacrificing pride:

Thomas Merton: “Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real.”

Mark Twain: “Always do right. Whether the Democratic party is willing to acknowledge that the principles of good character are absent from its party platform remains to be seen. Whether candidates for office are willing to make these principles part of their campaign rhetoric remains to be seen. What is known for sure, however, is that social/political tensions in America will not subside until people of all political persuasions adopt these principles.

What is also known for sure is that people of all political persuasions who identify as Christian or Jews should be leading the charge to advance these principles. Those who do advance these principles could be called “true patriots.” Those who don’t advance these principles should be called hypocrites.

APPLYING UNDERSTANDING TO POLITICS AND DEMOCRACY
Many liberals and progressives who strongly oppose President Trump and what he represents are obsessed with finding information that reflects badly on him and his supporters. When they uncover details that can be used to criticize or ridicule Trump or Republicans, they do not hesitate to use words in ways that wound rather than heal. They do not realize that these patterns of thought and speech contribute to America’s deepening polarization. The entrenched pride of liberals and progressives convinces them that their political and moral positions are unquestionably and unambiguously right and defensible. Of course, it must be said that entrenched political pride also exists among conservatives.

With this perspective in mind, it is clear that political partisanship is rooted in pride — not policy differences. Pride acts like emotional armor: it locks people into defending their tribe’s moral high ground, making policy nuances and loving your neighbor secondary to winning. Liberals spotting Trump “flaws” represent Trump and his followers as threats to the social order — not as fellow citizens with valid views. Conservatives do the same when they complain about “wokism.”

The toxicity of the “us vs them” paradigm is the reality that all Americans need to understand if they want to preserve democracy. How that can happen is the question.

Applying understanding found in Donald Trump: Understanding the Man and His Followers is a good way for Americans of all political persuasions to begin to change themselves and one another.

in the context of Trump and MAGA, understanding of one another means both right and left acknowledge the fear, shame, and loss of pride that simmers beneath self-righteous anger and political loyalties. Without excusing harm or abandoning truth, understanding will come only when liberals and progressive learn why conservatives are drawn to Trump. Stories of status loss, cultural disorientation, feeling mocked or left behind can be acknowledge and respected while still holding firm boundaries against lies, cruelty, and attacks on democracy.

Understanding here is not about agreement on policy issues. Understanding is a disciplined, honest effort to see the deep human reality of our neighbors. Understanding is evident when pride is sacrificed for the benefit of others. Understanding is evident when soft words of mercy and compassion are used to turn away wrath.

These quotes discuss the virtues of understanding:

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” – Stephen R.
