The reason is that Fear Affects the Ability to Think and Act Logically. Here is a summary of what science knows about this and applies those principles to President Trump and his followers:

HOW FEAR AFFECTS THE ABILITY TO ACT LOGICALLY
Fear can make it hard to think clearly and make good decisions. That’s because fear activates parts of the brain and body that focus on quick, protective reactions instead of careful thinking that may take time, study, and asking for help from knowledgeable people. When we feel afraid, the amygdala—the brain’s “fear center”—takes charge. It sets off the body’s “fight, flight, or freeze” response, which prepares us to defend ourselves or escape danger. But this also takes attention and energy away from the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain that handles logic, planning, and reasoning. As a result, it becomes harder to think through our choices, compare options, or predict what might happen later.

Everyone becomes afraid at one time or another when occasional, unique events occur. That is normal. What is not normal is living in a long-term, persistent attitude of fear. The following content describes President Trump and explains why many of his behaviors, including the following, are illogical — except to himself and his loyal followers:

Overestimating danger: President Trump’s rhetoric commonly uses strong warnings about existential issues (e.g. immigration, crime, aggression by foreign powers, Democrat’s control of government, etc.) to energize supporters who see these problems as serious and immediate threats. This messaging presents him as a strong, fearless protector who will take quick action to fix those problems. Political analysts report that this fear‑focused approach connects strongly with his base and increases their loyalty.

Trump’s rhetoric describes issues in simple “danger versus rescue” terms that creates a sense of urgency that makes his followers and loyalists in congress focus on decisive action while ignoring unforeseen consequences of his policies. Supporters who share these fears see his actions as necessary steps to keep the America safe.

President Trump leverages expansive executive authority to issue orders bypassing Congress, directly addressing the threats he emphasizes in his rhetoric. These rapid actions (e.g. mass deportations, border fortifications, tariffs, etc.) reinforce his role as the decisive solver of crises he and his base sees as imminent threats to their security. All these dynamics stem from exaggerated fears amplified by Trump for political dominance and sustained supporter loyalty.

Tunnel vision and impulsive decisions: Fear causes President Trump to focus on existential threats (e.g. political rivals, economic rivals, geo-political threats, border security, national security, etc.) He also focuses on a package of fears that are uniquely his. The accumulated burden of Trump’s fears handicaps him from seriously considering the consequences (e.g. broken diplomatic relations, economic and health hardships for Americans and foreign allies, etc.) of acting to mitigate these threats. His fears and blindness to consequences unavoidably lead him to rash decisions. Therefore, his decision-making style is often described as impulsive, where his tunnel vision manifests in policies and actions driven by the singular short-term benefit of pleasing his political base which is one of the ways he protects himself from his personal fears. In his mind the only way to please his base is by satisfying their expectation that he will constantly demonstrate his strength, and fearlessness is to them and the world through decisive actions.

Freezing or feeling stuck: Sometimes fear makes it hard for some people to decide anything at all. People might worry so much about making the wrong choice that they avoid deciding altogether. This is not true of President Trump whose decision-making style contrasts sharply with paralysis. Rather than being frozen by fear of wrong choices, he exhibits bold decisiveness, often acting impulsively and changing course flexibly without deep analysis. He has learned to adopt this kind of behavior because he knows his political base expects it of him. He knows that he would lose public support if he was indecisive on any issue. Fear of losing the support of his political base is always greater than any unknown, unpredictable external fear that might paralyze him from acting decisively.

Trump freezes or feels stuck when his policies yield unforeseen, undesirable consequences that raise public ire from media, Democrats, foreign diplomats and even his own followers. In these circumstances he is stuck only in the sense that he is totally unable to rescind his policies or apologize for bad decisions. The science of this effect of fear is that fear impairs reasoning by activating the amygdala, which overrides the prefrontal cortex responsible for logical analysis and decision-making. This shift prioritizes survival instincts over nuanced evaluation, leading to impulsive or biased judgments. This way of thinking manifests in the following behavioral, cognitive, and physiological ways that impair clear thinking:

The amygdala detects threats (i.e. fears) rapidly, flooding the brain with stress hormones like cortisol that suppress prefrontal cortex (PFC) brain function which orchestrates higher-order cognitive processes through coordinated neural firing patterns across its subregions.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) supports executive functions like planning, logical decision-making, and working memory by intentionally combining incoming sensory information with stored knowledge and learned rules (i.e. civil laws, moral laws, religious laws, etc.) Sensory inputs are consciously linked with intellectual knowledge from sources like books, expert advice, and learned legal or moral standards to guide complex, goal-directed behaviors that maximize benefits while minimizing risks to self and others.

This thoughtful processing helps suppress irrational or impulsive reactions, allowing more mindful, logical attention to be directed toward strategies for reaching goals instead of acting on gut-level emotions. The orbitofrontal PFC specializes more in evaluating risks and rewards, helping to compare options based on expected outcomes and adjust behavior when situations or consequences change.

When the brain is actively working on a task, certain cells in the prefrontal cortex keep firing even during short pauses. This helps the brain hold information in mind even when the things you’re thinking about isn’t in front of you. This kind of “top‑down” control influences other parts of the brain and helps you adjust your behavior. This involuntary response disrupts normal, healthy prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity, shrinks dendritic spines and reduces neurotransmitter efficiency in prefrontal cortex (PFC) neurons by weakening synaptic connections that support clear thinking and careful option-weighing.

Dendritic spines—tiny protrusions where synapses form—retract under prolonged glucocorticoid exposure caused by fear and stress. Neurotransmitter systems like dopamine and glutamate operate less efficiently, slowing signal transmission and impairing the PFC’s ability to juggle multiple variables which, if considered, would delay impulsive responses.

This degradation of PFC function manifests as scattered attention, where individuals struggle to prioritize relevant details amid distractions. Instead of actively using their brain, they default to simplistic or habitual choices rather than analytical deliberation. As a result, reactive impulses from the amygdala override deliberate PFC control, prioritizing gut-level survival responses over reasoned judgment. This shift to the amygdala causes snap decisions, reduced impulse control, and tunnel vision on immediate threats, sidelining broader context or long-term consequences until stress levels drop.

Fear diminishes higher-order prefrontal cortex (PFC) functions like weighing evidence, exploring alternatives, consulting others, evaluating actions against laws, morals, and common sense. This makes it tough for fearful people to hold multiple viewpoints or ethical considerations in mind. Chronic stress from unresolved fears also causes structural alterations in the brain. When the brain is under long‑term stress, tiny branches on prefrontal cortex (PFC) neurons shrink. At the same time, the amygdala becomes overactive and creates stronger pathways for constant alertness. This goes beyond normal stress responses. High levels of stress hormones weaken PFC receptors, which makes it harder to control impulses and think through situations in a careful, detailed way. These are serious handicaps for anyone burdened by fear, but the weight of the handicap is much greater for political leaders

Negative bias: Fear causes people to focus on possible bad outcomes. This fear makes most people overly cautious and pessimistic. In President Trump’s case, this consequence of fear is mixed. The bad outcomes that Trump recognizes are primarily those that affect how his political base views him. The other outcomes he is especially alert to are those where he experiences public shame for things he has said or done. If he exercises any caution at all, it is with respect to the effects his words and actions have on his political base.

Losing favor with his adoring base is Trump’s greatest fear. Therefore, bad outcomes are never his fault. When something goes wrong, he defaults to blaming someone else.

In Trump’s mind he is always the victim. Fear responses can be constructively adaptive in the face of genuine danger but becomes harmful when fears are persistent, exaggerated, or easily triggered. Here are four distinct ways that fear affects thinking and behavior:

Fear changes thinking

Fear activates the amygdala and stress systems, which override slower, reflective reasoning in the cerebral cortex. This can cause people to act defensively, ignore facts, or miss good opportunities because they see more danger than actually exists.

HOW UNDERSTANDING OF FEAR APPLIES TO PRESIDENT TRUMP
Trump supporters who notice his unpredictable behavior have good reason to question why he acts the way he does and doubt whether he’s deserves their continued support. Supporters who don’t see that his multiple fears are actually weaknesses are inclined come up with weak or unrealistic excuses for his behavior. They excuse his words and actions as the unusual brilliance of a genius instead of recognizing that he always operates out of his many personal fears — not strength. Deluded by President Trump’s rhetoric and actions, his faithful supporters are unable to understand that his many fears drive his thoughts, words and actions. This is why they always find illogical reasons to ignore and/or excuse what he says and does as the ramblings and idiosyncratic behaviors of a genius.

On the other hand, Trump supporters who mindfully notice his erratic behaviors do well to wonder why he does what he does and doubt his fitness to serve as President. Some may also wonder if congresspersons who seem to blindly yield to his pressure are also influenced by inner fears that disqualify them as political leaders. It is risky to entertain such doubts in the MAGA community, but doing so is a sign of maturity, wisdom and character.

In the meantime, Mr. Trump maintains support from his base because it justifies his behavior as that of a genius and because of their own fears: Fear of losing control, status, or identity in a rapidly changing world. Psychologically, these fears drive cognitive dissonance, the mental discomfort that arises when reality clashes with belief. Faced with behavior from the President that seems erratic or troubling, supporters reinterpret it as genius rather than instability. This mental reframing helps ease the fear of being wrong about him and preserves their sense of security in a leader they trust. It also preserves their place in a community of people who strongly believe that he can do no wrong.

Motivated reasoning also plays a role in their attitudes. Fear of uncertainty or of political and cultural change leads people to seek comfort in strong, confident figures. When Trump acts unpredictably, followers often see it as evidence of cunning and strategic brilliance — a sign that he’s outthinking opponents and protecting them from threats they believe are dangerous to their way of life. This interpretation turns fear of chaos into faith in his control.

Socio-politically, fear binds Trump’s supporters to him every time he acts like an untouchable savior/hero. Many feel alienated or dismissed by traditional institutions and elites, but they feel that they are powerless to create change themselves. Trump’s defiance of those powers becomes a symbol of protection — a fearless champion facing the dangers they believe threaten the nation’s future and their personal security. By calling him a genius, they transform their fear into admiration and hope, reimagining his volatility as purposeful, righteous strength wielded on their behalf.

Fear drives the need to see Trump not as a clever protector — not as a reckless politician. That belief shields his supporters from doubt, turning fear into faith and confusion into certainty. But the image of strength Trump projects is a lie built on fear.

Ultimately, fear fuels the psychological and social need to see Trump’s behavior not as reckless, but as the calculated moves of a brilliant protector. This interpretation shields supporters from both doubt and vulnerability, turning anxiety into loyalty and uncertainty into conviction. But the image of strength Trump projects is a lie built on fear! Look behind the curtain where you don’t see a hero, but a weak, insecure man hiding behind his own bravado.

TRUMP IS NOT ALONE IN HIS FEARS AND THINKING PATTERNS
The reason President Trump enjoys the support he has is that he and his followers are alike in two main ways:

They share the same existential fears.

They process their fears in the same way.

With these similarities in mind, it is easy to understand why his followers say, “he tells it like it is.” What they mean by this is that he voices raw truths (as they understand truth) about immigration, crime, elites, and decline of American values. In their view, polite politicians dodge these due to political correctness while Trump says what they are thinking. This perceived authenticity resonates as courage against media and contrary arguments by elite liberals. He says publicly exactly what his supporters are thinking privately. Furthermore, he convinces them that he is the only person who can successfully overcome the existential fears that motivate what they think and how to process that thinking into action.

Understanding these relational dynamics, it must be said that Trump’s thought patterns and actions appear perfectly logical to his followers. He reflects their fears in his rhetoric, and his policies provide decisive resolutions they lack the power to enact themselves.

His rhetoric repeats and amplifies collective anxieties about borders, economy, elites, and cultural erosion that his base experiences daily. Followers view his blunt “truth-telling” as validation. To his followers, bypassing Congress via executive orders embodies logical, rational efficiency that moves decisively to solve existential crises that they fear. It is logical to expect, therefore, that the fears that impair Trump’s prefrontal cortex (PFC) functions will also impair the PFC functions of his base. His unchecked authority fulfills the hopes and expectations of his base vicariously. They would love to be able to act with the same impunity he enjoys. He acts as their empowered agent, resolving grievances through mass deportations or tariffs they cheer but cannot execute.

This surrogate role cements loyalty between Trump and his followers because he reflects their instincts while wielding presidential resources to deliver results. He turns personal vulnerabilities into group victories without requiring followers to risk anything beyond support.

It is critical to understand these dynamics for several reasons:

Explains MAGA identity fusion to Trump and his loyalists in Congress.

Explains and predicts behavior patterns at political events and protests.

Explains why persuasion on the basis of logic, reason, facts, laws and morality is futile.

Explains that voting habits are based on more than policy and party loyalty.

Explains that confrontations with Trump’s base should be grounded in compassion for people with fear-induced cognitive handicaps.

Explains why Trump’s followers see themselves as victims of liberal politicians and voters.

Explains why Trump’s followers do not trust liberals, mainstream media and liberal education institutions.

These understandings should always be in the background of all liberal people, liberal media and liberal education institutions who hope to build positive working relationships with Trump followers.

RESOURCES FOR FURTHER STUDY
The content of this page includes simplified summaries of complex social, psychological and biological science.
