He has often described himself as “very, very smart” and a “very stable genius.” He frequently points to his business success, his deal-making, political victories, and performance on cognitive assessments as evidence of his mental acuity.

For example, Trump has repeatedly boasted about “acing” a cognitive test—the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)—during his 2018 health checkup, claiming a perfect score of 30/30, though the official results have not been released. He often asserts his exceptional intelligence and has claimed to have “one of the great memories of all time.” Despite his boasting, his claims are largely self-reported and not substantiated by publicly available standardized test results.

Trump’s boastings about his intellect raises a question about why he does it. For sure there is an element of narcissism in everything he says and does, but boasting about your own intellect is something no one does — except Trump. He has no shame in boasting about his intellect. There are four reasons Trump boasts about his intellect:

Counter internal shame about his weak intellect.

Project intellectual superiority to his base and opponents.

Rally supporters who value unapologetic bravado over traditional credentials.

Position himself as an intellectual champion against “know-it-all” experts, media, or Democrats.

These behaviors align with narcissistic traits and shame-avoidance strategies in which he frames intelligence as a weapon in his “us-against-them, I-win-you-lose, you-win-I-lose” worldview.

One reason Trump fears highly educated is because voting data confirms a “diploma divide,” where college-educated voters increasingly favor Democrats, while non-college-educated voters support Republicans like Trump. The table below shows how he ranked against Democrat opponents three presidential elections.

Year

Voters Who Graduated from College

Voters Who did not Graduate from College

Trump (R)

Democrats

Trump (R)

Democrats

2016

43%

55%

62%

37%

2020

43%

55%

58%

41%

2024

42%

55%

56%

42%

‎‎
‎Clearly, Democrats have always had the edge among college graduates in Trump elections. Just as clearly, Trump has always had the edge among voters who did not graduate from college. It is not surprising, therefore, that he fears college educated voters and that he targets his rhetoric to non-college voters. About two-thirds (67%) of President Trump’s 2024 voters—often synonymous with the MAGA base—lacked a college degree, down slightly from 71% in 2016. This non-college majority defines his coalition, with white non-college voters comprising 51% of it in 2024. Because Trump’s margin of victory (+1.5%) for the popular vote in 2024 was so slim, it makes sense for him to widen his appeal anyway he can (e.g. making himself attractive to non-college voters.)

Trump and his supporters might argue that he targets non-college voters because they prioritize economic populism, border security, inflation, and opposition to “woke” curricula. That is true, but the argument ignores that these policy issues are rooted in existential fears such as TRUMP’S FEARS which his supporters share. Left-leaning college-educated voters, on the other hand emphasize climate change mitigation, racial equity through DEI initiatives, LGBTQ+ rights, gender-affirming care, student debt relief, expanded higher education access, abortion access and gun control.

This difference in policy preferences creates a structural GOP disadvantage based on education that Trump and his conservative allies have good reason to fear if they hope to get elected or reelected. Trump strategically targets non-college voters as his core base because they represent the majority of the electorate and align closely with his policy priorities. On the surface this sounds like good election strategy, but, when his appeal to non-college educated voters is considered in the context of TRUMP’S FEARS, it is reasonable to conclude that he isn’t just courting non-college voters who share his fears and like his policies. He is also exposing his fears of educated people because they tend to vote liberal/progressive and would like to see him impeached.

Trump might not be the genius he claims to be, but he is smart enough to understand why some, maybe all, college educated Democrats and independent voters do not vote for him: In addition to disliking his policies and character, they see him for who he really is (i.e. a fragile human whose only real strength is his ability to conceal his deep fears and shame from his adoring MAGA followers.) Understanding his handicaps, thoughtful people throughout the education spectrum who know good character from bad cannot vote for him as President.

Trump might also be smart enough to figure out that highly educated, highly motivated voters have the moral, intellectual and financial resources to expose the truth about the moral and psychological fragility of Trump and Republican congresspersons to poorly educated conservative voters and educated independents. This explains Trump’s rhetoric and penchant to punish blue states led by Democrats who generally have more college graduates and left-leaning universities than red states. Not only does he fear the power of their votes, but he also fears how they might mobilize against him and his Republican allies to weaken his presidency and maybe even make the way for impeachment.

No one will ever know if Trump understands these matters at the cognitive level or not. Given his aversion to self-reflection, it is doubtful that he knows or cares. All he cares about is managing his fears and avoiding shame.

What is important, however, is that Trump’s supporters and allies in government be educated about all of his fears. Who knows, if they become educated about the fears and shame that drive him, they might get smart and think again about voting for his conservative allies who run for Congress. It’s a long shot, but it is worth hoping for.

FEAR OF EDUCATION IS COMMON TO CONSERVATIVES
It is not only President Trump who fears educated people. Republicans in general have many reasons for their strong bias against public education:

College‑educated voters have, in recent years, leaned more Democratic while non‑college voters lean more Republican.

Higher education and public K-12 education in the U.S. show a strong alignment with liberal cultural values, often labeled “wokeism” by critics, due to dominant progressive ideologies in curricula, faculty composition, and institutional policies.

Populist conservative movements often frame political debate in terms of “the people” against educated elites (e.g. professors, experts, journalists, scientists, etc.) This framing resonates with voters who feel ignored or disrespected by institutions and educated elites.

Liberal education is a major issue in conservative culture wars:

curriculum content

gender identity

race and history

parental control

book bans

Distrust of highly educated experts and scientists strengthens MAGA group identity.

Education fosters critical thinking skills like analysis, evidence evaluation, and fact-checking that enable resistance to simplistic soundbites voiced by Republican politicians.

Liberal-aligned higher education often prioritizes progressive narratives that train graduates to promote “woke” concepts while dismissing conservative views of “wokism” as conservative propaganda and disinformation. Problem-based learning, open-ended questioning, and metacognitive training build capacities for dissecting and critically evaluating political candidates’ policies and candidate claims beyond rhetoric.

It is important to clarify that conservatives and Trump do not fear all education. The kind of education conservatives favor includes rigorous, parent-directed education focused on core academics, practical skills, and traditional Christian values delivered through expanded school choice options and homeschooling. They also favor universal education savings accounts (ESAs) and vouchers that let public funds follow students to private schools, charters, or homeschooling. In general, they favor policies that empower parents over government bureaucracies. This reflects the belief that families, not the state, best direct children’s upbringing.

The reality behind these public beliefs is fear of secular, liberal-dominated curricula that push ideological agendas like DEI, gender theory, and revisionist narratives in public and higher education. Conservative parents effectively shield their children exposure from influences they will eventually encounter when they enter the real world where they will sooner or later be exposed to all the liberal/progressive influences and education that their parent fear.

OTHER REASONS FOR TRUMP TO FEAR EDUCATED PEOPLE
If he is the stable genius he claims to be, Trump is smart enough to understand that educated people have the ability to hurt him beyond the voting booth and media. They can hurt him in two ways:

Destroy his stranglehold on Congress by voting Democratic.

Shape public understanding of the reasons why Trump and his allies do what they do.

Activist voters can influence political outcomes by informing non-college voters about the reason Trump says and does things they don’t understand and disapprove of. Such issues include but are not limited to the following:

How certain behaviors create instability and conflict.

Why he uses divisive rhetoric.

Why he uses punitive Executive Orders to punish Democrats, media and blue states.

Assessment of his character.

Assessment of his mental health.

Expose his fear and shame.

Explain how his character, fear, shame and mental health drive his rhetoric and actions.

Campaign strategists are extremely cautious about appearing to make medical or psychological claims about a political figure. Strategists worry that:

It can be framed as unfair or stigmatizing.

It can backfire by generating sympathy for the candidate.

It shifts the conversation away from policy and toward personal attacks.

So even when voters might feel something is off, strategists stay away from language that resembles diagnosis. Here are some of the reasons why they avoid these strategies:

They fear backlash from non‑college voters: There is an assumption that some non‑college voters will reject nuanced campaigns on deep, soft, non-policy issues that deal with matters such as character, psychology, fear and shame. Strategists worry this can sound condescending, even if the intention is educational and even though Republicans follow a “no-holds-barred” strategy in their campaign rhetoric. So, Democrat strategists avoid explanations that feel too academic, therapeutic, or elite‑coded. This fear creates an unlevel playing field where Democrats play nice while Republicans play dirty. Talking about character, psychology and mental health is not dirty play. It is fair game when trying to educate voters about factors that will inform them about who to choose as their president. Failure to educate them is not exactly criminal but it is at least short-sighted, unwise and unpatriotic. The potential risks of incurring backlash from Trump’s base is a minor consequence compared to the real and present dangers of him remaining in office.

They believe voters respond more to material issues: For decades, strategists have assumed that talk about health care, wages, jobs and inflation is more relevant that discussing character. Strategists also tend to believe that voters care more about their bills than psychology. This belief has never been tested.

They fear the media will frame it as personal attacks: Campaigns that discuss instability, divisive rhetoric, punitive behavior and character traits might be framed by opponents and media as “unfair negative campaigning.” Therefore, strategists try to avoid that trap.

They underestimate how much voters care about leadership behavior: Political scientists have shown that voters — especially swing and non‑college voters — do care about stability, temperament, predictability, respect for norms, and how a leader treats people. But strategists often assume these topics are too “soft” or “abstract,” so they underuse them.

They worry about complexity: Explaining why a leader uses chaos, divisive rhetoric, punitive actions and conflict requires context and nuance that doesn’t fit into a 30‑second ad. But the political environment of 2026 and 2028 is not like any previous era in American history. Policy positions alone are not sufficient markers of suitability to serve in public office. Character matters. Courage matters.

A STRATEGY FOR EDUCATING VOTERS ABOUT CHARACTER
Most American voters observe Trump’s character in his words and actions daily. For sure, Democrats and some independents don’t like what they see. And there is increasing evidence that some who voted for him previously are beginning to wonder if they made a mistake. We know this because his approval ratings have dropped precipitously in his second term and a few in Congress have dared to incur his wrath by supporting policies Trump doesn’t like.

These are positive, welcome, long-overdue indications that voters are beginning to evaluate politicians’ behavior, stability, and temperament (i.e. character) — not just policies and rhetoric. The challenge is to educate all American voters about character. Most voters, including those who have never been to college, don’t have the awareness or inclination to evaluate Trump’s performance in terms of mental health, psychology, character, fear and shame. They prefer conservative news platforms, tv sound bites and social media. But frequency of street protests, and declining approval ratings give ample reason to believe that some voters are open to learning how character issues apply to politicians. It would be a matter of great neglect and poor character if Democrats do not amplify the issue of character to build understanding of who Trump and his political allies really are and why they do what they do.

How to educate the public about character is a major challenge. Non‑college voters tend to rely less on mainstream media and more on local news, social networks, and peer‑to‑peer communication for political information. The best strategy for reaching them, therefore, is through their preferred media.

Being media savvy, educated voters have the ability to covertly infiltrate social media favored by Trump supporters and seed it with doubt and facts that have the potential to cause MAGA voters to abandon support for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections which are widely viewed as a referendum on President Trump’s second-term performance.

Midterms typically serve as referenda on the sitting president, with the incumbent party losing House seats on average (e.g. Republicans lost 27 house seats in Trump’s first midterm.). Republicans hold slim majorities (House +5, Senate +6 post-2024), making 2026 a high-stakes test of Trump’s popularity.

Trump is so fearful of a blue wave in 2026 that he warned his Republican base in January 2026 that a Democratic takeover would lead to his impeachment, framing the midterms as existential while urging redistricting. Fearing defeat in 2026, some courageous GOP lawmakers have already begun distancing themselves from Trump on issues like war powers, Obamacare subsidies, and veto overrides, signaling anxiety over voter backlash in swing districts. They will likely be primaried by Trump but at least they are showing that they have some character.

Democrats need to flip only 3 House seats for control; Republicans will be defending 22 Senate seats in red-leaning states. Because Trump’s base turnout drops without him on the ballot, he has good reason to fear all Democratic efforts to create a blue wave. Democratic election strategies will no doubt include these issues:

Affordability & cost of living

Housing

Immigration (moderate framing)

Outreach to young men

Kitchen‑table economic issues

Republican strategists and candidates are rhetorically prepared to handle these issues. But there are three issues that they are not prepared to counter: Trump’s fears, shame and mental health. These issues should resonate with the following referendum-driven voters:

Independents

Moderate voters

Occasional / low‑propensity voters

Working‑class voters (all racial groups)

Rural and small‑town voters

Suburban swing voters

Younger voters, especially young men

How to reach these voters to create doubt in their minds about the fitness of Trump and congressional Republicans to serve is the challenge. It is a heavy lift but not impossible. It can be done by exploiting the facts about Trump’s fears, shame and mental health. MAGA supporters and independents who voted for Trump previously need to be disabused of the belief that he is a smart, fearless leader. They also need to be gently educated of the fact that they choose a fearful loser — not a winner who would protect them.

Trump has already acknowledged awareness that heavy Republican losses in 2026 would result in his impeachment. This fact is not lost on incumbents in Congress who have decided not to run again. This trend and Trump’s declining polling numbers clearly show that some voters are beginning to wake up to the fact that something is not right in the MAGA world. What they need to know is that what is not right is that Trump and his congressional allies have serious character issues (e.g. mental health, fear and shame) that affect the well-being of all Americans — including MAGA supporters.

If voters become educated about these issues, Trump’s act as a brave, strong leader will be blown — even if he is not ultimately impeached. Democratic politics and congressional mathematics might protect Trump from impeachment that results in removal from office, but those factors would not be enough to protect him from the shame of becoming irrelevant and impotent as President. Being a lame duck president is not his style.

Weather they win big or little in 2016, Democrats have the potential reduce Trump’s influence by bringing his shortcomings into clear public view. Shortcomings like TRUMP’S MENTAL HEALTH, HIS FEARS, Social Dominance Orientation, and shame are his handicaps. Whatever the strategy might be, it must be carried out covertly because the risks of offending the MAGA world about their leader are very real.

NOTES TO READERS:

More about this strategy will be featured in this website in the future.

Readers who are eager to know what such a strategy might look like can send an email to truepatriotsusa@proton.me

Not being much inclined to internal perspective, Trump may not be able to articulate his handicaps, but his rhetoric, his behaviors and his policies all show that he is always at work managing his fear and shame. And, from his constant verbal attacks on Democrats and other educated elites, and from his punishing policies against Democratic states, we find abundant, clear evidence that is not just Democratic policies he fears. He fears the fact that, because they are educated and smart, they have the resources necessary to at least disable him.

and all his other fears will manifest in ways that have the potential to crush him emotionally. The same would be true for the Republican party and the MAGA world.

Highly educated liberals/progressives do not yet have a vision for this as a strategy. But if they did, it could be a winning strategy that would cause enough defections from Republican to Democrat to radically change Congress.

In his 2016 Nevada Republican caucus victory speech, Trump said: “I love the poorly educated.” This might appear to contradict what he has said about his own intellect, but there is a canny logic to this statement. Here is the full quote:

“We won with young. His base knows their own education limitations but that is not a problem as long as he, a stable genius, is their president.

By praising “poorly educated” supporters as “the smartest people” and “most loyal,” Trump validates their instincts over formal education, fostering identity fusion and R-WA submission. This counters mockery by Democratic/intellectual elites and, positions Trump as the populist defender/advocate of his base which is mostly comprised of poorly educated, middle/lower class people. Republican House and Senate candidates in 2024 largely mirrored Trump’s playbook by prioritizing gut-level issues (e.g. economic populism, border security, anti-wokism, etc.) that energized non-college voters, rather than pivoting to court college-educated ones.

With this strategy in mind, it is predictable that Trump would fear educated people. Educated people do not vote on gut instinct. They vote on the basis of character, policy, logic and reason. Knowing this, Trump works hard to demean intellect — except his own.

RESOURCES FOR FURTHER STUDY

https://msutoday.msu.edu/news/2025/ask-the-expert-trumps-actions-to-the-department-of-education

https://apnews.com/article/trump-dismantling-education-department-8b5d0961700f0fe69d18ea80b437c8b8

https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/03/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-empowers-parents-states-and-communities-to-improve-education-outcomes/

https://www.nea.org/nea-today/all-news-articles/how-dismantling-department-education-would-harm-students

https://www.aclu.org/news/racial-justice/trumps-attack-on-the-department-of-education-explained

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/sep/29/donald-trump-still-king-poorly-educated/

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/trump-overwhelmingly-leads-rivals-in-support-from-less-educated-americans

https://truthout.org/articles/trumps-education-by-indoctrination-must-be-fought-with-social-justice-unionism/

https://apnews.com/article/trump-woke-education-24f864d83e2f5745d12a79ebac0d7cc4

https://thefulcrum.us/civic-engagement-education/donald-trump-education

https://foreignpolicy.com/2016/11/10/the-dance-of-the-dunces-trump-clinton-election-republican-democrat/

TRUMP FEARS EDUCATED PEOPLE FOR GOOD REASON Donald Trump has frequently claimed to possess exceptional intellectual abilities.
