AMERICA’S SOCIAL/POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT IN THE AGE OF TRUMP
With increasing frequency, observers of Donald Trump feel justified in voicing their frustration, concern and anger over his policies, rhetoric and behaviors. Here are some of the ways he is described by:

When Trump’s supporters hear what others think of him, they are strongly motivated to come to his defense because they interpret attacks on Trump as attacks on them individually and collectively. Thus, they are compelled to come to his defense. Here is how they defend him:
- “Strong leader” and “fighter,” emphasizing his combative style and willingness to stand up for their beliefs.
- “Patriot” and “true American,” reflecting their view that he defends traditional American values and sovereignty.
- “Champion of the forgotten” or “voice of the working class,” highlighting his appeal to those who feel overlooked by elite political figures.
- “Honest” or “telling it like it is,” appreciating what they see as his blunt, straightforward communication style.
- “Reformer” and “change-maker,” for his promises to disrupt Washington politics and prioritize America’s interests.
- “Tough on crime” and “protector of borders,” praising his policies on immigration and law enforcement.
- “Resilient” and “unbreakable,” referring to his ability to withstand criticism and attacks from opponents.
Trump supporters will defend him even though they sometimes struggle to understand why he does what he does and sometimes disagree with what he does. But MAGA followers do not easily bend when they observe some of the unexplainable things Mr. Trump does. Here is what they say when they don’t understand him:
- “We don’t have all the information, but Trump knows what he’s doing.” This reflects belief in a hidden wisdom or strategy behind his actions.
- “He’s playing 4D chess,” implying that Trump is always thinking several moves ahead, even if it’s not obvious to outsiders.
- “The media won’t tell you the whole truth,” suggesting that supporters distrust mainstream narratives and believe Trump’s motives are misrepresented.
- “He fights for us even when we don’t see it,” highlighting a willingness to overlook confusing behavior because they believe he ultimately serves their interests.
- Some express frustration but stay supportive, saying things like, “I’m uneasy, but I still back him because nobody else fights like Trump”.
- Others interpret contradictions or unclear actions as part of a larger battle against political enemies or conspiracies, continuing their commitment despite doubts.
Being constantly confronted with troubling news of national and international events and disparaging media rhetoric regarding their hero — and themselves — as a movement, MAGA supporters have adopted creative ways to relieve their cognitive dissonance. They must do this in order to maintain some measure of internal integrity.
Because support for Trump is closely tied to identity and social belonging, distancing themselves from Trump and others in the MAGA world would mean identity loss and voluntary disassociation from the MAGA community. Therefore, they employ the following techniques to reconcile their feelings about Trump’s actions with attacks by the non-MAGA world on him — and themselves. These techniques include the following:
Rejecting or downplaying negative or incriminating information about Trump (e.g., legal issues, misdeeds) as “fake news” is common to avoid cognitive conflict.
Many live in social media echo chambers with like-minded Trump supporters. These echo chambers amplify and reinforce pro-Trump viewpoints and limit exposure to challenging perspectives.
Individual fears and anxieties are calmed by exposure to repeated media reminders of Trump’s strongman persona and rhetoric that promises simple solutions appeal to complex issues.
Many double down on their support even when confronted with evidence against Trump. Admitting that he has shortcomings would demand a difficult psychological shift comparable to “ego death”.
Attendance at MAGA political rallies and religious services where Trump’s character and policies are applauded reassures them that they are righteous in their beliefs.
These techniques are not perfect, but they work well enough to manage their cognitive dissonance. Thus, MAGA supporters adopt creative ways to relieve cognitive dissonance and maintain their internal integrity despite ongoing negative news and criticism that bombards them in mainstream media. This strategy allows them to continue identifying positively with their President Trump, their cause and their beliefs while minimizing the destabilizing effects of psychological conflict.
