EVIDENCE OF SHAME IN REAL TIME
THE CYCLE OF SHAME
The clearest evidence of President Trump’s immaturity and mental health deficiencies is found in the ways his words and behaviors fit into the classic cycle of shame.
-
Shame → Name-Calling: Public humiliation provokes anger and self-defensiveness. Victims lash out with derogatory labels and even violence to displace pain and regain superiority.
-
Name-Calling → Revenge: Verbal attacks amplify perceived injustice, converting shame into rage; revenge seeks to inflict equivalent suffering on the shamer, restoring equilibrium per cultural norms in societies where group honor is is tied closely to personal shame.
-
Revenge → Renewed Shame: Retaliation risks backlash, perpetuating humiliation for all involved and escalating to violence or avoidance.
This cycle starts when someone (e.g. Trump and MAGA followers) feels that their reputation is/are threatened by liberals and/or media who disagree with them and/or criticize them. Criticism and/or disagreement is interpreted as shame which lowers their sense of status. Name‑calling is used as a quick defense. Revenge is used to try to stop future attacks, but it usually causes more damage and doesn’t fix the real problem. Shame leads to name‑calling, and name‑calling can spark revenge as people try to feel powerful again.
