It is not as simple as going to church, reading a book, reading postings on social media, going to a Bible study, doing daily devotions, or even reading your way through the Bible in a year. These are all casual, legalistic, religious approaches to learning about God. Indeed you may learn a little bit if you do these things, but those approaches will never take you to the unsearchable depths of knowing God that serious, discipleship study enables.

STUDY TIP: See TWO KINDS OF KNOWLEDGE for more about how to know God.

The way we see it, religionists are consumers of commercial, religious enterprises (i.e. businesses) that cater to spiritual wannabees who, instead of studying to show themselves approved by God, are willing to listen to a religious leader, read a religious book, listen to religious music, or attend a religious conference and then accept and adopt as gospel what someone else has imagined in their own minds and packaged up as a religious commodity to sell to gullible religious consumers. Therefore, when we study the Bible, we should also be listening for God’s voice to interpret the spiritual meanings of the words that we read.

In God’s view, those who read and think they understand because they read the literal words and act on what those literal words say, are blind and deaf. Children and adults who can quote scripture are regarded as very spiritual even though they are not born again. But the ability to memorize scripture is not a capability that God values. Being able to read natural words and interpret their spiritual meanings is a spiritual — not intellectual — activity. False Prophets, on the other hand, use their intellectual minds to interpret the meaning of the literal words of the Bible. We should only and always depend on what we see and hear in our spirits — not only on the literal words of the Bible.

Suggesting that we should not rely on the literal words of the Bible will be regarded as blasphemy to Old/First Covenant religionists who have created their doctrines and religious practices based on the literal Bible. But we remind them that the Bible says that if the law (i.e. religion) was able to impart life, righteousness would have been based on religion. If so, the promise to Abraham would be irrelevant and there would be no need for a New Covenant (i.e. Jesus).

Nevertheless, because God has given us the Bible (i.e. the law) as a tutor to lead us to faith (i.e. New Covenant), we begin with the Bible, but we do not end with the Bible for understanding. Rather, we apply the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle while reading the literal Bible to discover what the spirit of God will reveal to us through it.

God remedied our inability to understand the spiritual law by sending messiahs, true prophets and angels to heal us of spiritual deafness and blindness. Until we are healed (i.e. our spiritual eyes and ears are opened), we are not able to understand the spiritual meanings of the following kinds of scriptures:

parables

dark sayings

proverbs and riddles

figures, words of the wise and riddles

dreams, enigmas and difficult problems

figurative language

dreams and visions

shadows

types and patterns

symbols

The spiritual meanings of these scriptures have always been hidden from religious people — including Jews and Christians. Lacking understanding of spiritual things, they always wrongly think that the literal/natural interpretation of the Bible was all that God had to say about a subject. They put their trust in their fleshly ability to read, understand and apply literal human words and in the fleshly interpretations of those human words by religious leaders who convinced them that they understood the spiritual meanings of those words. Thus, they themselves, and the people to whom they listen, functioned as gods for them because they were not listening to God’s voice for spiritual understanding.

The result of this history is that religious people are ignorant of the fact that there is a spiritual Bible (i.e. God’s voice) that leads to life that goes deeper than the literal, written Bible that leads to death. These are found mainly, but not exclusively, in the Old Testament. The Bible portrays people who understand the spiritual Bible as New Covenant disciples. They hunger and thirst to hear God’s spoken word.

This attitude contrasts with the wisdom of Old/First Covenant religionists who proudly believe they know-it-all because they have studied and even memorized the literal Bible and have heard many inspiring teachings from religious leaders. Their idea of digging for truth is listening to a sermon, listening to a teaching tape, listening to religious music, going to a spiritual movie, going to a conference, participating in a Bible study group, reading a book by a religious author or doing a daily devotional. They do not qualify as children eager to learn and will not learn anything more than literal truth because they choose to receive instruction from false prophets instead of digging their own spiritual wells.

Religious people pursue these human resources instead of seeking God because they wrongly think that, when God said ‘faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ”, he meant that hearing God’s voice means the same thing as reading words written by men on a page, and that hearing a message from a religious leader with their natural ears is the same thing as hearing the spirit of God speak to their hearts. They are not the same!

Nevertheless, there is great value in reading the Bible. During personal study, it is easier to relax, slow down and listen to God’s voice explain scripture to us. In general, therefore, personal study provides greater opportunities for asking, knocking and seeking God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength.

Studying with others, however, provides advantages not present during personal study. First, if our study partner(s) have studied, we effectively multiply the benefits of study when we share with each other what we have heard God say to us. Plus, we have someone who may be able to answer questions that have come up during our personal study. And, if they expose their questions to us, we are challenged to study new topics.

Group study facilitates the “iron sharpens iron” and “wherever two or three are gathered” principles. Assembling a very large puzzle with three our four people is possible and efficient, but doing it in a large group is impossible. Small group study also fulfills the two are better than one and cord of three strands principles.

And here are a few other benefits of group study:

Two or three disciples can cover more territory in the Bible when they work together than when they work individually.

They can maintain a sense of community togetherness that they lost when they left religion.

There is a spiritual dynamic (i.e. power) that kicks in when like-minded disciples study together, ask questions and challenge and build each other up in an open, loving, accepting environment.

They can comfort and encourage one another when they suffer at the hands of their religious enemies.

They can challenge, correct and teach one another when they see a weakening of resolve to stay free from religion.

They can confirm or deny the truth of what they think they are learning by sharing with each other.

These are indispensable benefits of studying together with one, or two or, at most, three others. But, when choosing whom to study with, disciples should be as sure as they can be that they are equally yoked (i.e. like-minded) with others who have escaped from religion. New Covenant disciples and Old/First Covenant religionists have very different perspectives on the Bible that will greatly inhibit fruitful communication.

The way to discover if you are equally yoked is to test to see if you are speaking the same language. People who are still religious will not understand the language (i.e. spiritual truths) of people who have broken free from religion. Spiritual interpretations of scripture by New Covenant disciples will be as unintelligible as a foreign tongue to Old/First Covenant religionists. New Covenant disciples will always want to interpret the Bible symbolically while Old/First Covenant religionists will always want to interpret it literally. One tries to always listen to God’s voice, but the other does not. If it is impossible to communicate with them on this basic point, joining with them in study may be a waste of time.

Finding someone with whom to study will be a challenge for New Covenant disciples because New Covenant disciples make no pretense about religion through religious activity, clothing or speech. Furthermore, there is some risk in exposing non-religious beliefs to religious people. This is one reason why the Religion Detox Network website was created. See NETWORKING for how to use the website to make connections with people who might be good study partners.

RECORD WHAT YOU HEAR
Religionists, in their never-ending desire to frame their religion in an orderly, linear way, see the Bible in terms of real events that impact real people in real places in real time. They have difficulty, therefore, with scholarly studies of the history of the Bible and Bible criticism that unashamedly suggest that there is little in the Bible that is historically accurate. This is a big problem for Jews and Christians who need historical certainty in order to justify their religious faith.

Disagreements between religion and research are impossible to reconcile with logic and reason. Religionists have strongholds of wrong thinking that prevent them from accepting facts that contradict what they believe. Scholars know what they know and report what they know with prideful confidence. These are examples of conflict between faith and flesh where faith looks at things unseen while flesh (i.e. religion) looks at things that are seen and can be documented and replicated. Both sides look at facts that they can observe. The only difference is that they are looking in different places.

The conflict raises the following issue for those who are inclined to trust that the Bible is God’s word: If there is no historical certainty about the Bible, how are those who want to believe in it and trust it to regard it? The answer is this: Regard it with faith that it is true in a spiritual, symbolical sense but do not trust it in a literal sense. After all, God never said read my word. He always said listen to my voice.

STUDY TIP: Even though the Bible is full of dark sayings, proverbs and riddles, figures of speech, words of the wise and riddles, dreams and visions, enigmas, difficult problems, shadows, types and patterns, and symbols, signs and allegories, there are parts of the Bible that may be trusted literally.

Learning how to know which parts are to be taken symbolically and which parts are to be take literally is the big challenge for Bible students/disciples/learners. People who aspire to spiritual holiness would do well to regard these statements from God as commandments on a par with the Ten Commandments that make the way for seeing and hearing with spiritual eyes and ears.

We must always remember that it is God alone who gives us spiritual eyes to see what we read and spiritual ears to hear. He says “eyes to see and ears to hear” for a reason: Eyes are for reading the Bible and ears are for hearing his voice while we read.

Thus the command to listen to God’s voice does not mean that we only listen and not read the Bible. It is a two-step process. We must respect that God gave us the Bible to introduce himself to fleshly humans but it does not reflect the fullness of who he is. The only way to receive the full truth about God is to listen to his voice.

The written Bible is God’s concession to the fact that humans are inherently flesh and not spirit. And we must remember that the natural (i.e. fleshly) person does not accept or understand the things of the spirit. The Bible is the way God applies the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle to teach his people about himself. But the teaching is not complete until we listen to his voice. Thus the Bible does not need to be historically accurate to be spiritually accurate. Spiritual truth comes only when we listen to his voice.

STUDY TIP: See the following pages for more about spiritual versus literal interpretation of the Bible:

God’s Written Word and God’s Spoken Voice Part 1

God’s Written Word and God’s Spoken Voice Part 2

Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 1

Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 2

Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 3

We begin to learn about God by studying the Bible, but we do not study it simply to learn the words. This is the same act of obedience that faces people today. They do not think of themselves as prophets and do not refer to themselves as prophets, but they do listen to God’s voice and record and report what they hear God tell them. And they do this because they are warriors in God’s army which is focused on doing justice by setting people free from slavery to the sin of religion.

All New Covenant disciples are true prophets, they also should make the effort to write down what they hear. They may not write any books or create any websites, but they will at least want to write down what they hear so that they can refer to it when sharing God’s truth to others.

Recording what you think you hear is also very beneficial for capturing the truth that God speaks. People who don’t want to forget important facts always write them down for future reference. This is most common in academic environments. Writing God’s spoken words down is an indication that you think what you have heard is important.

When the spirit speaks to our hearts, it is like fire, wind, thunder and lightning. As long as God’s word exists in your mind and heart as fire, wind, thunder and lightning, you will struggle to translate it into human words you can use to teach to others. Recording what you hear God say will be very useful when teaching others.

STUDY TIP: See How to Hear God’s Voice.

GET READY TO WORK Becoming a New Covenant disciple is not for people who follow a casual approach to learning about God.
