We either believe this is true or we don’t. Those who do not believe this statement will never understand scriptures about warfare with enemies. And if they don’t understand warfare and enemies, they will not understand God, their relationship with him, or their relationship with other religious people. Those who do accept that all scripture is useful for training in righteousness have the potential to understand, but they must first accept that Biblical warfare symbolizes the eternal contest between flesh and spirit and — not about war as it has existed historically or represented in the literal words of the Bible.

People who do believe that every part of the Bible has something to teach must also understand that the nations with which Israel fought symbolize religious peoples — not geopolitical entities engaged in international relations through diplomacy, trade and war. In short, nations represent religious kingdoms that are opposed to God’s kingdom. There is no other logical explanation for the ongoing cycles of killing, and being killed, by the sword that Israel experienced. This interpretation may not be immediately self-evident to most readers, but those who are curious enough to read on will not be disappointed.

Without understanding of the symbolism of soldiers, armies, war, bloodshed and dying/killing by the sword, it is impossible to understand warfare scriptures. It is hard enough to accept that foreign nations would engage in such merciless killing, but it is harder yet to accept that God actually instructs Israel to do the same to its enemies. Considering the numbers killed on both sides, the conflict has all the appearances of obsessive, mutual destruction aimed at full extinction of neighboring kingdoms in ongoing conflict. In fact, extinction is exactly what each religion seeks because the long-term survival of one kingdom depends on the destruction of other kingdoms. While mutual destruction is the ultimate end for worldly kingdoms, God’s kingdom overcomes them all and absorbs all nations into one spiritual kingdom — a kingdom of priests.

Some Christians like to say that they have read the end of the book (i.e. Bible) and that they win. This is a cute religious saying that reinforces their confidence in their religion, but they are wrong in thinking that their religion wins. What they fail to recognize is that if they are religious, they are God’s enemy and they lose when God overcomes their Old/First Covenant religion with New Covenant truth. In other words, God triumphs over religion.

Neither Christians nor Jews understand who wins and who loses because they apply a literal interpretation of Old Testament stories about warfare. Jews are still looking for the Messiah to come and deliver them while Christians think that because they have Jesus they have won their personal victory over sin. And both religions wait expectantly for their version of the final days when the Messiah comes for the first time (in the case of the Jews) or returns (in the case of the Christians) to fight their battles for them. This is a major disconnect between two Abrahamic religions that claim to believe in the same God.

The reason for the disconnect between Judaism and Christianity is faulty interpretation of the Old Testament. They both read it literally and do not understand the symbolism of enemies, warfare and salvation. Failing to understand, they effectively ignore stories about warfare because they cannot reconcile how God can say that they should not commit murder and also command his people to utterly destroy entire nations by killing men, women and children. Some may know, or at least suspect, that God uses such hyperbolic language to make a point, but they still do not understanding the spiritual meaning of these commands and err by failing to obey either command.

Lacking the correct interpretation of scriptures about enemies and warfare, Bible readers are quick to dismiss them as irrelevant to modern times. This is a major disconnect for Christians’ claims about believing that all scripture is God breathed and profitable for training in righteousness. It is also a disconnect for Jews who claim to have a very high regard for books of the law and prophets that talk about endless warfare and killing. In their hypocritical double-mindedness, both religions are challenged to understand the symbolism of those references to war, bloodshed and enemies in ways that can be applied to their own spiritual lives in real time.

Lacking the correct interpretation, there is a tendency to interpret Biblical references to warfare and killing as mere history. Given the gaps in time and space between us and ancient Israel, it is hard to make any sense out of it. Historical information is useful, but teaching about history is not God’s purpose, and we underestimate him if we think that he cannot teach us from such stories. We must always remember that he gave us the whole Bible to train us in righteousness. But if our interpretation of the Bible does not instruct us in ways that can be applied to our personal lives, we have interpreted it wrongly. And if we interpret scripture wrongly, we miss opportunities to mature.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT FOR WARFARE
While we always want to interpret scripture symbolically, there are historical facts that will aid our understanding of scripture. Facts which were common knowledge to Israel that are not known to most of us help us understand the times and the application of their encounters with God and their enemies.

For our purposes of studying warfare and enemies, it is critical to know that Israel was surrounded by religious enemies/nations that tried to lure them away from God, capture them and absorb them into their religious worlds. It is good for us in these modern times to understand those ancient enemies so we can compare them to the religious enemies that surround us and compete with God for our affections, loyalty and money. Here is a brief summary of facts about those nations:

Biblical nations (e.g. Amalekites, Egypt, Philistines, Moabites, Babylon, etc.) with whom Israel engages in warfare symbolize man-made worldly kingdoms (i.e. religions) past and present.

Biblical nation/religions are under human authority of kings, queens and princes who function as both civil and religious leaders at various levels of administration of each kingdom.

Authority to rule a Biblical nation is typically granted on the basis of family relationship, but it is also acquired through violent force (i.e. warfare) that brings people into submission out of fear.

Biblical nations/religions finance their civil and religious activities by imposing taxes on their citizens and on imported products. They also captured wealth when they brought other nations under their control through warfare or diplomacy.

Biblical nations/religions also earned income from religious pilgrims who traveled to religious sites (i.e. temples) to bring material offerings to gods and pray.

Biblical nations had priests who developed systems of religious beliefs (i.e. doctrines) and ceremonial worship practices that they administered in temples dedicated to multiple gods.

Some religions had cult prostitutes who earned income for themselves and the temples in which they served.

Biblical nations maintain order through codified laws which the nation adopted and enforced.

Biblical nations went through periods of war with each other as they used their power to gain territory, people and worldly wealth by attacking neighboring kingdoms and capturing land and people from whom they seized wealth and collect taxes.

When captives from one nation were absorbed into the nation that conquered them, they were forced to recognize the gods of the conquering nation through worship and payment of tithes and offerings.

See the following links for details about the beliefs and practices of ancient, Biblical-era religions:

Religions of the Ancient Near East

Sumerian religion

Mesopotamian mythology

Assyro-Babylonian religion

Canaanite religion

Ancient Egyptian religion

Hittite religion

In Biblical language, these nations are symbolically represented as kingdoms of the world. They should not be interpreted as geopolitical entities engaged in international relations through diplomacy, trade and war. They symbolically represent collections of people, past and present, who share religious beliefs that they practice under presumed divine authority of religious leaders (i.e. kings, queens, princes) who make and enforce rules by which they govern their respective kingdoms. This interpretation will not seem very relevant until we recognize that these kingdoms still exist and that religious leaders continue to exercise their authority in modern day religions. It is not common to call these domains of authority “kingdoms”, but in God’s language that is what they are because men — not God — always lead them.

Therefore, Biblical nations should be interpreted as contemporary religious kingdoms created by men who create, revise and enforce rules based on traditions unique to each nation/religion. Simply put, the ways of religion are nothing like God’s ways. The way of religion always includes a religious leader (e.g. pastor, rabbi, prophet, teacher, evangelist, etc.) who presumes to speak for God by interpreting the literal Bible to a congregation that trusts that religious leader and travels to listen to a sermon/message about the Bible. In God’s view, people who choose the way of religion have chosen to listen to Trees of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God’s way is that his people choose to listen to his spoken voice which is a Tree of Life. When people do not listen to his voice, his jealousy and anger is aroused.

The way God sees it, the difference between his way and the ways of religion place religious people in direct conflict with him. In God’s typical way of overstating matters to make a point, conflict means warfare with enemies.

Since the potential territory (i.e. land/earth/people) that any kingdom can occupy is subject to change, religious kingdoms are in constant competition for the hearts and minds of people who will support them with money, service and loyalty. Running a worldly kingdom, including a religious kingdom, is not cheap. Human resources, communication systems, money, organizational structures and other kinds of worldly resources are necessary to keep religious kingdoms viable. Kingdoms that have more of this support are more attractive. They have newer, nicer, bigger buildings; they have better musicians and sound systems; they have more staff and programs, attractive websites, and more and better of everything that enables them to compete for customers that buy religious commodities. It is all about branding and marketing commercial, religious products and services. Religions that stay up to date with all of these visible features are able to entice member/citizens of other religions to transfer their loyalty and personal resources (e.g. money, time, talents, etc.) to a different kingdom that suits their needs better.

It is critical to recognize that God’s kingdom requires none of these worldly resources to establish his kingdom and maintain order in it. God’s kingdom is a spiritual (i.e. it has no physical substance) kingdom that requires none of the material/worldly resources and tools used by worldly/religious kingdoms to attract and retain citizens. Nor does God require any human person to establish or administer (i.e. mediate) his kingdom. Rather, God manages his kingdom through spiritual — not human — laws that he writes on the hearts of New Covenant disciples so that they live by faith and not by sight.

God has only one weapon that he uses in his competition with religion for the hearts and minds of his people: His spoken voice/word. He wields this weapon directly and through his chosen/anointed agents: true prophets, angels, messiahs, high priests, witnesses, and warriors. He sends then into battle to speak for him to religious people who do not know how to hear his voice.

The problem for Old/First Covenant religionists is that they understand none of this. They are so accustomed to practicing religion and listening to false prophets that they don’t know that they should be listening to God’s voice. Worse yet, they do not understand that failure to listen to God’s voice is sin. They wrongly believe that having a religious leader listen to God for them and report what they hear (e.g. through a sermon, book, music, etc.) to an attentive congregation satisfies God’s expectations for listening to him. This is wrong thinking.

The reality is that God does not want any human mediator between him and his people. He considers failure to listen to his voice rebellion which is sin. Rebellion angers God just like any father is angered when his children refuse to listen and obey when he gives them instruction. And just like any father will discipline a rebellious child whom he loves, God is compelled our of love to discipline his children for their rebelliousness.

But God, in his wisdom, does not take his misbehaving (i.e. sinful) kids out behind the woodshed for a licking, send them to the naughty corner for a time out, or deprive them of some physical thing that they cherish. He does not discipline as human parents discipline. His chosen form of discipline is to let his children have the desires of their heart for a time but then bring judgement later on for pursuing the desires of their heart. If they want to listen to false prophets, whom he considers to be other gods, he lets them have their way with confidence that, sooner or later, they will see things his way and repent for going their own way and for listening to false prophets. In the meantime, if they want the kind of meat that religion offers instead of spiritual food, he lets them have it until they get sick of it. But, in the interim, while they enjoy the forbidden fruit of religion, they must suffer the consequences of their disobedience: Separation from God (i.e. spiritual death, exile).

Religious people understand nothing about Godly discipline. Because they have only known religion and have never really known God, they do not know that while they are religious (i.e. fail to obey all of God’s commands — including the commands to tear down high places and set captives free) they are exiled/separated from God. In ignorance of their exiled condition, any trouble they might experience is attributed to random evil, demons or Satan. They have no idea that trouble comes as a result of the curse of disobedience. They have no idea that they need discipline because they are thoroughly convinced that their religion makes them righteous and protects them from trouble.

Totally oblivious of their exiled condition and the fact that they are being disciplined, they are very proud of their righteousness. When God says that they should have no other gods before him, they cannot fathom the idea that they could be guilty of worshiping another god. Their self-righteousness blinds them to the possibility that their religion is not what God wants. They comfort themselves with the fact that they are not like other religions or pagans who worshiped idols of wood and stone. They never consider that idols can be human and conceptual as well as physical or that there could be any flaws in their religious doctrines. Thoroughly intoxicated with self-righteousness, they never consider that humans who teach the doctrines they believe are false prophets, gods or idols in God’s eyes.

Being misinformed, uninformed or ignorant about the symbolic meanings of gods, idols and the fact of false prophets is not a valid excuse in God’s eyes. In their blind ignorance of Biblical symbols, they deny the truth that all scripture is profitable for training in righteousness and effectively treat God as though he is a liar. Their wrong thinking based on the literal; Bible convinces them that scriptures about idols do not apply to them because they do not worship idols or gods of metal, wood or stone. They would do well, therefore, to take God very seriously on all points of scripture — no matter how unimportant, archaic, nonsensical or irrelevant they might seem — and seek to understand the symbolism of idols and other gods and learn to identify false prophets.

When we discount, minimize, ignore or dismiss any scripture because we think it is unimportant, archaic, irrelevant, ambiguous, or even nonsensical, one or both of the following attitudes apply:

We effectively say that portions of God’s word (i.e. those parts we do not understand or dismiss) are not profitable for training in righteousness.

We effectively refuse to be trained by whatever it means — even if we did understand what it means.

These attitudes indicate lack of trust and rebellion toward God. Since Jews and Christians like to believe and represent that they do trust God and are faithful to obey him in all ways, both religions should want to come to a good understanding idolatry in our own lives that might arouse God’s jealous anger toward us. If we really want to be on God’s good side, we should make every effort to study with the hope of learning if we need discipline so that we might correct our attitudes and behaviors, repent, and return to God.

What we should want to do is understand the symbolism of the Bible instead of applying our own intellectual reasoning and knowledge — or the reasoning of knowledge of others whom we think know more about God than we do. We should want to do this so that we do not sin by not listening to God’s voice. If we listen to the voices of false prophets and do trust that we can really hear God’s voice ourselves, we effectively place those false prophets between us and God in terms of the source of truth, knowledge and wisdom. That is idolatry. By placing these idols between ourselves and God we show that we do not really love God enough to seek him by understanding the deep mysteries of scripture. And there are few matters of scripture that are more important and more difficult to understand than idols and idolatry.

False prophets are only too glad to come to rescue people who struggle with difficult scriptures. Serving as trusted watchmen for their followers, they convincingly and proudly represent that they know and understand God and the Bible. And people trust that these watchmen will tell them what they need to know so they can be right with God.

Therefore, if religious leaders do not preach/teach about idols, people think they are OK on that account because they do not worship material idols. And if their chosen teachers do not preach about idols, that must mean that they as watchmen do not see idols as a problem. Neither the watchmen nor the people know that they have spiritual idols and are not right with God. To make matters worse, most people, being too lazy and too inexperienced to understand difficult scriptures through their own study, relax in their trust that whatever religious teachers tell them is true. This is a very bad deal for both the teacher and the one who listens to the teacher.

God, as the author of spiritual truth, takes offense when worldly (i.e. human) knowledge taught by false prophets is represented as spiritual knowledge and truth. He takes offense when individuals privately apply human knowledge to their understanding of God and his ways. Moreover, he is offended when religious organizations practice deception and create religious doctrines based on such knowledge and lead ignorant people astray. Thus he gave us the fourth commandment to warn us about misrepresenting and misquoting him. Because God is not a man that would do religious activity, people who want to be Godly should not do religious activity and violate this commandment.

We should not be surprised, therefore, that God is strongly aroused to jealous anger and vengeance when his name (i.e. character/reputation) is profaned and brought into disrepute (i.e.blasphemed) through misrepresentation, misquoting, false teaching and religious activity. He becomes very jealous of his name (i.e. his reputation based on how people think of him when they see supposedly Godly people doing religious things) when people wrongly represent him to the world. So God is jealous on two accounts: Religion seduces God’s wife and misrepresents his character.

God’s anger is further aroused by the fact that a multitude of different religions, all purporting to represent God, have their own individualistic religious rules and rituals and teachings about the character of God and the kind of worship that he expects from his people. These different teachings compound and confuse an already distorted view of God and raises doubt by non-religious watchers about his influence over his people. How can they possibly follow the same God if they look and act different and follow different rules? And if they are not following the same God, which god or gods are they following? Non-religious watchers might reasonably ask: “Which is the real god that guides these people — if indeed there is a real god? ” For all these reasons it can be said that religion provides no real benefit to God and actually misrepresents him to a world of people that need him.

If religion does not represent or benefit God, then we must ask who does it represent and who does benefit from it? If we could get inside the minds of those who observe religion as outsiders, we would find that what they see is that religious people are slaves to religious traditions and sensual activities that make them feel good about themselves because they are doing things that they believe make them righteous in God’s eyes and in the eyes of their fellow religionists. This observation is not far from the truth, but it is only one of many problems that outsiders have with God because religion misrepresents him. So who can blame God for being angry? Anyone would be angry with someone who was publicly misrepresenting and defaming them.

Practicing religion makes religionists feel good about themselves and secure in their beliefs because people who share their religious beliefs and practices affirm their righteousness and spirituality. That is how they think but in fact, religionists have entered into a covenant of death with each other. They deceive one another into believing that they are all close to God because they practice what they believe is the one, true religion that God approves. Religion provides for them a community in which they find acceptance — at least until they break the rules. These are the compelling reasons for becoming religious and for staying religious. But they are all fleshly reasons.

It is imperative for Jews and Christians to understand that God is not impressed by religious behavior– even if it is performed with all sincerity by people who say that they love him and use his name often in conversation and in their religious services. The only people who are impressed by religious activity are those who are engaged in it and publicly affirm their belief in it to one another. In other words, religion is play acting in high places where religious communities reward (e.g. applause, affirmation, praise, money, etc.) each other for their righteousness as they understand it. Among other labels, God calls religion hypocrisy because it is not what it appears to be.

One of the seductive tactics that religious leaders use to attract and retain followers is to ascribe to themselves high-sounding titles that suggest legitimacy and closeness to God. In doing this, they violate God’s command that we should not take on titles such as rabbi, teacher, father or leader because we already have a father to teach us. In God’s view, when a religious teacher willfully places himself/herself between God and his people, that teacher effectively makes himself/herself an idol. When anyone willfully inquires about God from a human teacher, that person effectively makes that teacher an idol. The teacher and the one who listens to the teacher have both violated the First Commandment.

Obviously, all religions, not just Judaism and Christianity, have leaders with titles that imply superiority in the ability to teach and lead. In other words, all religions have idols. Jews and Christians compound their sin by also violating God’s command that his people should not intermingle with religions and follow their customs or religious practices. Jews and Christians, therefore, are not really any better or worse regarding idolatry than any other religion. Idolatry is still idolatry even if it is dressed up with fine sounding religious language and titles.

The Bible has much to say about God’s feelings about obedience to his commandments. Some commandments are easier to recognize as commandments than others. Commandments about destroying neighboring nations, intermarriage, making covenants and setting captives free are among those that for which understanding is obscure and therefore harder to obey. Obscure or not, they are God’s commandments and he expects his people to obey them — even those that seem minor, irrelevant or unreasonable.

Religious people who who read their Bibles literally, or not at all, might want to dismiss the commands about following the religious customs of other religions and prohibitions against idolatry. If they do dismiss them, they would do well to re-evaluate the quality of their love for God. There is a big disconnect if they say they love God but are not willing to give up their religion because they think that one or more of his commands are minor, irrelevant or unreasonable. They never realize that their unwavering devotion to their religion is idolatrous. So, setting aside those things that they do not understand or agree with, they focus on those things that they can easily perform according to their literal interpretations of the Bible. Unfortunately, the laws/commandments that God wants them to obey are those written on the tablet of their heart — not with ink. If they think that they are safe in their religion which is based on their literal interpretations of the Bible, they are deceived and will suffer curses and disaster at God’s hand because they love their idols and religion more than they love God.

It helps to appreciate how God feels about idolatry if we accept that God looks at Israel (i.e. Jews and Christians) as his wife. This relationship is symbolically represented in the terms of the New Covenant. It is no mystery, therefore, that God would want to destroy religious kingdoms that have seduced (i.e. tempted) his wife so that she would join them in their religious practices. This is no less than any loving, jealous husband would do. God wants his adulterous wife (i.e. us) to repent of her/our harlotry and return to him and remain faithful to him.

This ongoing competition for affections characterizes the conflict (i.e. warfare) between God’s kingdom and the religious kingdoms of the world. If we don’t see this constant theme in Bible stories, we will not understand how the Bible instructs us in righteousness.

WARFARE: AN ONGOING BIBLICAL THEME
The concept of spiritual warfare is found throughout the Bible. It is introduced in Genesis where we find the cherubim guarding the entrance to the Garden of Eden with flaming swords. And it is found in the book of Revelation where war is a constant theme. In total, war or warfare is mentioned three hundred sixty-four times in the NASB. That compares with two hundred thirty-one times for peace. The lesson here is that there is no peace unless there has also been a war that secures peace.

War is major Biblical topic that must be understood symbolically — not in terms of the historical wars in which people used physical weapons to take physical life. A wrong concept of Biblical warfare might have been avoided if Genesis 1:28 had been accurately interpreted by Bible scribes:

God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

This short statement is full of symbolism that prophetically anticipates enemies and warfare in the rest of the Bible. To understand it, we must first look at the Hebrew words (click on English words below) from which the English words are translated. But the Hebrew words themselves do not provide all that we need to understand the meaning. We must also understand the symbolism of each word:

English Word

Symbolic Meaning

blessed

In Biblical language, people are either blessed or they are cursed. Old/First Covenant religionists are cursed, and New Covenant disciples are blessed. In God’s eyes, there is no in-between status.

The words bless, blessed and blessing are all code words for the New Covenant which is all about listening to God’s spoken voice. Thus, people under the curse of practicing Old/First Covenant religion received a blessing when they received God’s spirit that enabled them to walk by faith as New Covenant disciples. In effect, God turns their curses into blessings. But when New Covenant disciples backslide into religious activity, he will also bring curses on them.

The interpretation of blessing as an indicator of the presence of the spirit in New Covenant disciples is inferred from several scriptures:

God made man in his own image and blessed him. Since God is spirit, people are blessed when they are transformed from practicing fleshly religion to worshiping in spirit and truth. Another way to say this is that people are blessed when they stop listening to the voices of false prophets and start listening to God’s spoken voice. Hearing God’s voice is the essence of what it means to be a New Covenant disciple who has God’s laws (i.e. character) written on his heart. It is the essence of what it means to be made (i.e. created/recreated) in the image of God.

God blessed Noah and his sons after they had been baptized in the flood.

God’s promise to Abram was that he would be blessed and that all people/nations/families would be blessed through him.

God blessed Isaac.

Issac gave the coveted blessing to Jacob who was also blessed by God. The blessing rightfully belonged to Esau because he was the first-born son. But, Esau sacrificed his right to the blessing when he sold his birthright to Jacob in exchange for red stew meat.

There is much symbolism in this story that must be understood before the concept of blessing can be understood. Almost anyone is able to produce a natural child, but only New Covenant disciples can parent a spiritual child.

multiply

Just like the word “fruitful” does not apply to material fruitfulness, the word “multiply” does not apply to material (e.g. money, children, property, etc.) multiplication. Therefore, God is not commanding Abram, nor anyone else, to have as many natural children as possible. Rather, God is commanding Abram to spread spiritual seed (i.e. God’s spoken word).

Abram had several children, but only Isaac, the son born to Sarah, a free woman, was a spiritual child who was born according to God’s promise that Abraham would be the father of many nations (i.e. New Covenant disciples.) All other offspring, including Ishmael were slave children born of the flesh, but they also fulfilled God’s promise that Abraham would be the father of many religions. These nations were different, however, in that being offspring of the flesh, they would be in conflict with children of the spirit.

Since the flesh counts for nothing, Abraham’s sons and descendants by Hagar and Keturah are not counted in the list of descendants that are relevant to God because they are born to concubines — not to a legitimate (i.e. spiritual) wife.

Nevertheless, God’s commands to Adam and Noah to be fruitful and multiply are also fulfilled through these offspring of Abraham. God, of course, allowed these non-spiritual offspring to flourish, but to what purpose if they only caused trouble for his chosen people?

The reason for the presence of these religious nations was, and is, to teach Israel (i.e. Jews and Christians) about warfare and test them to see if they would obey God’s commandments. King David was the ultimate example of a Biblical warrior. A good share of 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel are devoted to his successes and failures as a warrior king.

Many nations of both slave (Old/First Covenant) and free (New Covenant) descendants multiplied and lived side-by-side but never peacefully. Israel was always at war with one religious nation/kingdom or the other.

One good example is Keturah’s son Midian, from whom the Midianite nation evolved and proved to be a constant source of trouble for Israel. Another good example is Amalek, grandson of Esau, who also caused constant trouble for Israel. These two nations had multiplied according to God’s promises to Abraham, but were not spiritual children like Isaac, Jacob and Israel. Instead of being free children born of the spirit, they were slaves born of the flesh, and they were a constant source of irritation for Abraham’s spiritual children.

In other words, God allowed Old/First Covenant religions multiply right along with New Covenant disciples, thus creating a ripe environment for conflict between the flesh and the spirit.

The conflict between Shem and Canaan, Isaac and Ishmael, Isaac and half-brothers born to Keturah, and Jacob and Esau represents the same conflict that existed between Cain and Abel: Old/First Covenant against New Covenant. This conflict between Old/First Covenant religion and New Covenant disciples is the basis of the warfare theme we find throughout the Bible.

This conflict is discussed in more detail in Sibling Conflict and in Egypt, Babylon and Canaan.

fill

In addition to the common meaning of “fill,” the Hebrew word also has the following interpretations: complete, completed, consecrate, endow, fulfill, gratify, ordain, refresh and satisfy.

These convey a much more spiritual meaning.

earth

See Land and Earth for a discussion of the meaning of earth.

Since the Hebrew word “erets” can be translated as either land or earth, and since land is appropriately interpreted to symbolically refer to people, God’s command to “fill the earth” should be interpreted as “fill the people” with God’s spirit (i.e. something that refreshes, satisfies and completes) people. This of course anticipates God’s spirit being poured out on Old/First Covenant religionists to transform them into New Covenant disciples.

In this transformation, natural (i.e. fleshly, religious) earthy, people are born again as spiritual people who worship in spirit and truth — not according to human rules that define worship. A literal interpretation of the scripture says that man has dominion over every living thing that moves over the earth. This is one of those ludicrous literal interpretations that is totally illogical.

The concept of dominion and subjugation found in the Bible always refers to one nation or person ruled by another nation or person. It is reasonable to assume, therefore, that the concept of ruling/dominion in Genesis 1:28 also refers to one entity ruling over another.

This theme is introduced in the sibling rivalry between Cain and Abel and further developed in conflict between Abraham’s sons and Jacob’s sons. In all examples, one son was favored by God at the expense of the other.

These stories anticipate all subsequent stories of warfare in the Bible. The basic issues are the depth of God’s affections for New Covenant disciples compared to Old/First Covenant religionists, and authority of one brother to rule over the other.

This authority to rule changes from one brother (i.e. covenant) to rule over the other is found throughout the Bible. The loved brother (i.e. New Covenant disciple) rules over the unloved brother (i.e. Old/First Covenant religionist) as long as the loved brother obeys God’s commands and listens to his voice. When he does not obey, the unloved brother (i.e. the religious brother) is given authority to rule over him until he repents of the sin of practicing religion. This back and forth pattern is repeated often in the Bible but ends with the loved brother overcoming and ruling in the book of Revelation.

God uses the symbolism of one brother ruling over another to represent the conflict (i.e. warfare) between the spirit and the flesh. That the loved brother that rules is guided by the spirit of God and the unloved brother is guided by his flesh testifies to the superior value of the spirit.

Every living thing that moves (i.e. fish, beasts, birds and insects)

The nature of God is spirit that cannot be seen. It should be no surprise, therefore, that he desires worship in spirit and truth — not worship in the flesh. These facts strongly imply that anyone who worships in spirit cannot be seen while they worship. This is true because they are worshiping in their hearts — not with their natural bodies. This is a stark contrast to natural men who can be seen moving on the earth, in water or in the air while practicing their religions.

Understanding these clear differences between spirit and flesh, it is then possible to understand why God employs the following symbolism to represent people who do not worship in spirit and truth:

Creatures that move in the water (i.e. fish.)

Creatures that move in the air (i.e. birds, insects.)

Creatures that move on the land (i.e. man, animals, insects.)

Fleshy creatures can be seen moving while performing religious worship in seas, on the earth and in the air (i.e. heavens) for anyone to see. But spiritual creatures cannot be seen worshiping because they worship and pray in secret, out of sight. Thus, references to fish, beasts, birds and insects are symbolic references to people who move about in one way or another to practice religion.

STUDY TIP: See this link for scriptures that explain that beasts are men.

These are the living things over which God’s people will eventually rule in the sense that Old/First Covenant religionists are converted to New Covenant disciples as they fulfill their function as warriors and prophets. Creatures that are declared unclean represent religious people who worship in the flesh. Creatures that are clean represent people who worship in the spirit. This is a warning to avoid participation in fleshly, religious worship. That the distinctions between clean and unclean creatures are very subtle and cannot be recognized without careful study is God’s way of saying that his people must be careful to study and learn the differences between spiritual worship and religion. There is nothing intrinsically clean or unclean about the creatures. It is all about training to know the differences between spirit and flesh.

Everyone begins as flesh. We are first raised in the religion of our parents or someone who teaches us to be religious. That is how we develop the fleshly nature to sin through religion. Everyone spends a period of time (symbolically represented as 40 years) in religion before being born again in the spirit (i.e. crossing into the promised land) as a New Covenant disciple because God uses the laws of religion to lead people to faith (i.e. New Covenant). They understand that religion only counts for religious people who do religion in public so that others will see them doing it and praise them for their religious behaviors.

In this new, spiritual condition, people embody Godly qualities that that only God sees because he looks at the heart — not at the external appearances or religious activity. New Covenant disciples live by faith that the unseen spirit of God is at work in them according to God’s will — which is just what we would expect for people who have God’s laws written on their hearts.

As spiritual people, they are a sweet aroma to people who are attracted to God through them. This contrasts with their religious life which is the smell of death.

These sweet, hidden spiritual qualities are the total opposite of public religion. The spirit moves over the earth like the wind that cannot be seen. Religion, on the other hand is always visible like the movements of fleshly things of all kinds (i.e. animals, birds, fish) may be seen with the natural eye. These fleshly activities are the substance of religion when people assign religious value to them and do them ritualistically according to religious traditions. Such earthly/worldly activities are the opposite of faith which is eternal and cannot be seen.

God often makes the point about flesh that moves when he refers to fish, animals and birds. Thus we see many verses that show beasts, fish and birds engaged in activities that cause trouble for God’s people. We find many stories filled with blood, swords, stoning, conspiracy and deceit that entertain but do not edify if we do not understand what they represent. It is instructive to compare all this trouble to the attitude of religion which does its best to avoid conflict that keeps everyone happy and content in their own little kingdoms by preaching peace when there is no peace.

The Old Testament stories of conflict are neatly summarized and condensed in the New Testament in the lives of Jesus and his apostles. God also represents this competition as testing.

Symbolically, this represents spiritual death that results from following religious rules and listening to false prophets who preach false doctrines. When God loses the battle with religion, he says that his people have turned from him and intermarried and intermingled with religious people. He also says that they worship at the altar of Baal which God instructed Israel to destroy.

What we are trying to describe here is the religious environment of the land promised to Israel. Before Israel arrived, it was already occupied by many religious nations (i.e. Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites) that competed with each other for people to populate their kingdoms. After Israel arrived they were also in completion with God, for the hearts, minds and money of God’s people as well. And, as we read the stories of the Old Testament, these nations were often successful in turning Israel away from God to worship their gods.

These stories symbolically describe the religious environments in which we all live. Even though the promised land (i.e. Kingdom of God) is within us, we are still surrounded by multitudes of religious organizations and people that offer attractive, seductive temptations to backslide into one kind of religion or another. These temptations, often coming from well-intentioned friends, family and neighbors, are difficult to resist. We know that from the story of Adam and Eve who, even though they had it all in terms of their relationship with God, still chose to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (i.e. religion) over listening to God’s voice. But if God’s laws are written on our hearts, we have strength resist the temptations that Eve, Israel, Jesus and everyone faces to participate in Baal worship (i.e. religion). It is also the job of all New Covenant disciples. In order to reinterpret the religious laws based on literal scripture, Jesus was compelled to break the religious laws based on those literal scriptures. This is also the job of all New Covenant disciples.

Many people might be willing to reinterpret scripture and break religious laws until they learn that breaking religious laws will incur the wrath of religious people just like what happened to Jesus when he took on the religious establishment of his day. What we learn from his experience is that anyone who reinterprets scripture and breaks long-standing religious rules will become enemies of people who were once close friends in their religious family. If we can trust the Bible, it is predictable that trouble will come to anyone who goes against the religious grain. This is the substance of warfare that ensues when we say and do things that challenge the religious status quo by following God’s commands to tear down and utterly destroy religious kingdoms and set captives free from religion.

This challenge is not for the faint of heart. The curse is that there is no rest and eventual death in the wilderness of religion. It is a choice between life and death.

THE BUMPY ROAD TO SALVATION FROM RELIGION
We reported in Kings, Queens and Princes that religious leader are to be interpreted as Pastors, Priests, Rabbis, Apostles, Bishops, Elders, Deacons, Overseers, Popes, Missionaries and Evangelists and other charismatic leaders of personal religious kingdoms (e.g. churches, synagogues, denominations, ministries, businesses, etc.) occupied by and supported by people who reject God in favor of a human king to rule over them and fight their battles for them. Although God does not want his people to follow these religious leaders, he allows them to have such a human king when they want want one. We learn this interpretation in 1 Samuel 8 where we find that God yielded to Israel’s demand for a king because Israel’s people had always had a desire for a king to rule over them ever since they left Egypt. In Biblical language, the kings Israel served functioned as gods and people who followed them are idolaters.

We might wonder why God gave Israel a king when he knew what would happen. God knew that his people would not be satisfied with him as their God until they had experienced first hand how demanding and oppressive human kings would be. He understood the reality that people need to compare the failings of human leadership with God’s loving kingship over them before they can fully submit to him. Or, putting it another way, they needed to be slaves before they could be free.

God communicates this lesson to us through the history of Israel and the Jews. Even though Israel had over four hundred years under a king in Egypt, and had been rescued from religion several times, it had not yet learned that it was better to live under God’s authority than a King (i.e. religious leader). And even though Israel had been in exile for four hundred years in Babylon, and was under the rule of Rome when Jesus was born, the temple religious system headed up by the scribes and Pharisees still flourished.

Despite the fact that they had been rescued/delivered from religious enemies many times, God kept reminding Israel that he was the God who took them out of Egypt and slavery. He also warned them not to return to Egypt and follow its religious customs. In all of these reminders God was essentially reminding his people, then and now, that he — not any human king or religious leader — was Israel’s God and that he would punish them with more time in servitude to religion if they did not repent of idolizing human leaders, return to him, and listen to his voice only.

In order for us in this modern age to learn from Israel’s history, we must first accept the fact that Israel symbolically represents Jews and Christians in all ages. Israel was, and is, a religious nation that fears God, which is what Jews and Christians claim to do. Both religions claim the Bible as their source of inspiration and aspire to righteousness based on Biblical teaching. Since all scripture is useful for training in righteousness, it is imperative that both religions learn from Israel’s history.

Evidence of a desire to be obedient to literal scripture is found in Judaism’s devotion to the written law of Moses. Similar evidence regarding Christians is found in the fact they recognize parts of the law of Moses (i.e. Ten Commandments) and accept as truth many other parts of the Old Testament (e.g. creation, Noah’s ark, deliverance from Egypt, prophecies about the Messiah’s birth, Psalms, Proverbs, etc.). Moreover, Christians have formulated most of their doctrines out of the literal words of the New Testament which is a continuation of Israel’s story. Thus, if we identify with Israel, we confirm that Israel’s story is our story and open the way to learning from it.

However, if we do not identify with Israel’s experiences regarding warfare, and recognize Abraham as our father, we have not yet understood the experience of being held in bondage to religion (i.e. Egypt) nor of being delivered from religion (i.e. Egypt). We have lived in bondage but have not understood that religion is slavery. If we do not understand Israel’s bondage and deliverance, we prove that we are still in the season of seven years of plenty that religion offers. We have not yet become hungry enough for the kind of spiritual food (i.e. God’s voice) that only God can give us. We have not suffered in bondage enough to cry out to God for deliverance/salvation.

Another lesson we should see in all of these stories is that God allowed Israel to have kings even though he knew what kings (i.e. religious rulers) would do to oppress Israel. He did this, however, knowing that someday Israel would cry out to him for deliverance and that he would then rescue/redeem/deliver/save them from bondage. In other words, he would bring them salvation from their enemies.

The following is a very brief overview of Israel’s cyclical seasons of victory, defeat and redemption. New Covenant disciples will also recognize that Israel’s story is their story:

Most people are born and raised to follow one religion or another. Those few who are not raised in religious families will develop/create their own personal styles of religion with gods and laws that are unique to them and others who share their values, world view and philosophy. They may not call what they do religion, but if written or unwritten laws of one kind or another control their behaviors, they are by definition, religious.

The religions, values, world views and philosophies of individuals change as people acquire new information that causes them to change course in some big or small way. Even Jews and Christians will modify their religious views and practices when they become convinced of some new truth.

During their whole lives, Christians and Jews show that they consistently fear God in their attempts to obey all of his laws for as much as they understand them. They also show that they consistently fear religious men/women who are in a position to judge them regarding their faithfulness to obey God’s laws.

At some point, religious people begin to have doubts about all the religious stuff that they do, the laws they follow and the controlling judgment exercised by others that keeps them in alignment with religious laws.

At some point, doubters wonder about the holiness and wisdom of their religious leader(s). They wonder about the efficacy of obeying all the rules religion places on them.

At some point they pray to God (i.e. cry out) for wisdom and knowledge that will satisfy their doubts and instruct them about the wisdom of following religious leaders.

At some point, some will take the risk of sharing their doubts about religion with others.

At some point, some begin to read their Bibles with greater desire for more understanding.

God hears their prayers and begins to open their spiritual eyes so that they can understand difficult scriptures that they did not understand previously. He also begins to open their spiritual eyes so that the begin to interpret scripture according to its symbolic meaning instead of only literally. What is happening is that God is beginning to write his laws on their hearts.

At some point they learn that religion is not what God wants from them and learn that they should not be seeking instruction about God from false prophets. So they drop out of religion and seek to learn from God directly by studying the Bible for its spiritual content — not its literal content.

At some point, God opens their eyes to understanding that he is the only one who can teach them about himself.

At some point, God begins to write his laws on their hearts and they know that what they have learned comes directly from his mouth.

At some point they are willing to resist the control that religious leaders, family and friends put on them to stay faithful to their religion by leaving it.

After they leave their religion, they suffer persecution from religious family and friends they have been left behind.

They enjoy a season of exciting spiritual growth. The Bible comes alive for them. They come to know many of the mysteries of God. They study and share what they are learning with others who dare express doubt about religion to them.

Eventually, they become prideful about their new wisdom and their heightened relationship with God. They backslide into a new form of religion that does not involve following rules made by men but which places them in an exalted position relative to people who are involved in conventional religion. They think that they are spiritually superior to religious people and readily display their knowledge of God and criticisms of religion to anyone who will listen. By openly and readily flouting their newfound freedom, they effectively shame religious people for being religious. In doing so, they enter into warfare in the flesh — not in the spirit. They become religious about not being religious and look down on those who are still religious. And because they have chosen to become religious again, God lets them have the desire of their heart by punishing them with more religion.

Some may eventually choose to return to their old religion, adopt one that is new for them, or create a new one for themselves and any others who would join them. In Biblical terms, they choose to go back to Egypt. God, of course lets them go and gives them another chance to cry out to him for deliverance.

The cycle begins again. Instead of being a friend of God, they become an enemy of God thinking that they are serving God by openly, even aggressively, shaming people about the errors of their religions. They backslide into religion by publicly displaying that they are not religious in the conventional sense. They idolize themselves for knowledge that God gave to them. In doing so, they set themselves up again for bondage to religion and the need to be delivered again.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: This cycle is grossly simplified and very generalized because it is impossible to try to summarize the Bible or our spiritual walk in a few steps. Nevertheless, we think it agrees, in general, with scriptures that also summarize Israel’s cycle of salvation, back-sliding, and salvation again. With all its shortcomings, it is a useful outline of the story of Israel which God gave us as an insight into our own history with religion. The sooner we can understand this history and apply it to our own lives, the better prepared we are to avoid falling into the same cycle.

The Religion Detox Network may appeal to people who recognize some or all of the steps in the process described above. They will finds its various forums useful for reporting their own experiences with religion so that others may be encouraged that the doubts about religion that currently trouble them are normal for spiritual growth and the transition to become a New Covenant disciple.

The reason for reviewing Israel’s history is to recognize that everyone is, at one time or another, a slave to religion and an enemy of God. We begin by looking at how religion works:

Each religious entity (e.g. church, synagogue, denomination, independent ministry, etc.) functions as an independent nation that is authorized to conduct its business by Federal and State governments.

Religious entities finance their operations by taxing their members (i.e. tithes) or by selling various kinds of religious products (e.g. books, music, etc.) and services (e.g. worship ceremonies, teaching, weddings, funerals, etc.).

All religious organizations have administrative functions to govern their business functions and ceremonial/worship activities.

Religious kingdoms have buildings in which they conduct their administrative business and perform their various religious services.

All religious organizations create laws/rules/policies to govern the their administrative functions and other laws/doctrines/policies to govern ceremonial/worship activities.

Each religious entity has hierarchies of kings, queens and princes who govern the religious entity in both administrative and ceremonial/worship matters.

Authority to rule in the hierarchy of religious organizations is based on physical appearance, human talents, ability to teach about God and perceived godliness (i.e. how religious a person is).

People who rise to the highest positions of religious hierarchies are perceived to embody charismatic leadership qualities that convey to followers that they have a special relationship to God that empowers them with Godly authority, wisdom and understanding that can be verbally (i.e. spoken word or writing) imparted to people who put their trust in them. These people function as idols in the religious system.

Authority ascribed to religious leaders by their followers typically changes from one leader to another over time as leaders or followers move from one kingdom to another. This amounts to polytheism.

Religious leaders of each kingdom use their authority to create man-made rules that prescribe who is and who is not a member of their religious kingdom and what members must do, or not do, to remain members in good standing of the religious community. In effect they make and enforce written laws.

The citizens of each kingdom voluntarily subscribe to and submit to the terms of membership for that kingdom. In Biblical terms, they bow down to religious authorities when they listen to and submit to their teachings.

When a citizens of a religious kingdom no longer agrees with the terms of membership of their present kingdom or no longer trusts the present religious leader(s), they will either remove the present leader(s) or leave the present kingdom in favor of another religious kingdom that they find more agreeable. People who voluntarily leave a kingdom may experience rejection.

Each kingdom constantly works to maintain a viable kingdom by keeping its citizens/members in alignment with the rules of the kingdom and by recruiting new members.

Member/citizens who are found to grossly violate the rules of the kingdom will lose their citizenship and suffer rejection.

The stability and security of each kingdom depends on the finances member/citizens contribute to it through subtle coercion through guilt and fear disguised as Biblical truth.

Religious leaders are constantly vigilant to ensure that current members will not leave and will continue to financially support the kingdom.

Religious leaders and members all work to ensure the long-term survival of the kingdom by raising children and recruiting new members who will become members of the religious community.

All religious kingdoms are in competition with each other for the affections and financial support of current and potential members.

Religious kingdoms have observable beginnings and life-cycles (i.e. ups and downs) that vary with the quality of leadership and the strength of the economy.

Religious kingdoms brand themselves in ways that distinguish them from other kingdoms.

See RELIGION for more about how religion works.

These are the characteristics that help us identify who is the enemy and who are our allies. Unless we read very carefully, however, we will not recognize that God allows enemies to capture Israel and the ark of god because God uses the enemy to punish Israel for its unfaithfulness. These situations are referred to as “exile” to religious kingdoms such as Assyria and Babylon. Exile is the basic tool that God uses to discipline his people.

On a few other occasions, during seasons of Israel’s faithfulness to enter into warfare with its enemies, Israel is empowered to capture the enemy because God is with them. But these are the exceptions.

After Solomon’s death, Israel divided into two kingdoms. The northern kingdom is called Ephraim and the southern kingdom is called Judah. Both kingdoms worshiped other gods and eventually fought with each other.

It is instructive to review the dynamics of all of these conflicts. The winning king took the people from the defeated kingdom home and forced them to worship the gods and idols of his kingdom. The captives became servant/slaves who are obligated to worship the king who was commonly considered to be divinely appointed to his kingship.

This is the context in which God sets people free from religion in which they are obliged to worship other gods (i.e. kings that function as religious leaders). The same thing goes on today, but religious kings win only by using words that deceive.

God wins the war when angels (i.e. messengers) to speak truth in love to the captives who perish in their religion. God wins when his people (i.e. sheep) are saved/redeemed/delivered from the control of shepherds who feed only themselves. The blind and deaf sheep of these shepherds are healed when they respond to the good news of the gospel (i.e. that they can be free from bondage to religion) with humility and repentance.

While God eventually wins in the end, it always appears that the enemy wins in the short run because God’s patience gives people plenty of time to come to awareness that religion is oppressive. In reality, however, the enemy is not winning the war. God allows a season of plagues, delusions and lies with which he punishes them until judgment day comes.

It is critical to have this picture in mind when trying to understand who or what the enemy is and how to redeem people who have been captured and enslaved. Each religious kingdom (e.g. denomination, church, ministry, etc.) has captives/slaves that serve and adore leaders because they have a deceptive appearance of godliness and flattering tongues that entice them to follow them into religion. Religious people voluntarily enslave themselves except to the degree that they are intoxicated with religion and do not know it. Some may want to be set free and others who are more intoxicated have no clue that freedom from religion is possible or good. The soldier’s job is to share the truth about religion with captives who want to be set free from religion and create the spiritual environment in which all religious captives will find the soldiers’ freedom and courage attractive and desirable.

That sounds simple enough but there is a catch: Enemy kings who fear losing their servant/slaves will resist all efforts by others to rescue their slaves. They will do whatever they need to do to hold onto their slaves and discredit, disarm and disable those who want to set the captives free. And they will do it in all sincerity thinking that they are serving God. This is the spiritual environment in which God’s soldiers contend with the enemy for people who were formerly slaves in ungodly kingdoms and guide them into God’s kingdom where they will be free.

This ongoing battle is the basic story of the Bible. It is a story told in a variety of ways at the personal and community level. It is all about the challenges of getting free from religion and then going back to set other captives free. Fighting this battle with religious enemies is the fulfillment of scripture that says it is for freedom that we have been set free. But this scripture does not mean only that we should live lives free from religion but that we should also help others who are still religious gain their freedom. In other words, we overcome religion and then help others overcome it.

Going into battle with religion to help others gain freedom from religion is the ultimate expression of loving our neighbors as ourselves. These conflicts with religious leaders are the substance of spiritual warfare with the powers and authorities (i.e. enemy) of the world of religion.

STUDY TIP: See this link for more about loving your neighbor as yourself.

Jesus is the best example of obedience to God’s command to utterly destroy religious kingdoms. King David, was also a warrior who understood this responsibility. Same for Moses, Joshua and other heroes of faith.

STUDY TIP: See Model Warriors for more understanding of why these Bible characters are considered to be heroes of faith.

Jesus sacrificed his life so that others may escape the death of fleshly religion and live in the spirit. And King David put his life at risk by taking on Goliath and other religious kings. In doing this, Jesus and David set the perfect example of true love: Laying down their lives for God’s friends. Not only did Jesus set this as an example, but he also actually commands his followers to lay their lives down for their friends.

This is a difficult command for casual Christians to understand. Jews don’t feel obliged to obey Jesus’ commands, but they are very big on obeying God’s commands. Both religions have been blinded to God’s commands to destroy religious kingdoms. Or, perhaps they have not overlooked the command but have ignored it because to obey it they would be obliged to destroy their own religious kingdom. Either way, they have been unfaithful.

Without excusing Jews and Christians from the need to obey God’s command to destroy religious kingdoms, it must be said that God has not opened their eyes. And once he does open anyone’s eyes, they will accept the challenge to go to war with religion.

When they go to war, however, they will need to disassociate from their religious identities (i.e. they will not call themselves Jews or Christians anymore). They will do this because once the New Covenant is established in someone, his/her identity is in God who is invisible and will no longer have a need or desire to be visibly identified as a member of a religious group. All that matters for them is that God’s laws are written on their hearts. They are no longer motivated by or directed by human laws and religious leaders.

The inability of Jews and Christians to set people free from religion would seem to be bad news for people who are held captive to religion. There is good news, however, in the fact that in this present age many people are breaking free from religion. We see this phenomenon in the statistics about the decline of religion. We don’t know the particulars of how this is happening, but we must conclude that there are New Covenant disciples successfully engaging in warfare with religious enemies. But this is good news only if those who do break free follow God’s command to reach back and set others free also. And they will do this when they realize that it is for the freedom of others that they have been set free and that failure to do this kind of work is not optional for New Covenant disciples. If they do not go back to help others, chances are they are still intoxicated with religion and will backslide sooner or later because the love of God is not in them.

Only New Covenant disciples who are conformed to his image will understand that what Jesus said about bearing good fruit, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, casting out demons, comforting the brokenhearted and visiting prisoners is symbolic language for setting captives free from religion. Only New Covenant disciples will understand that, because they are created in his image, the anointing Jesus has is the anointing that empowers them to fulfill God’s commands to do all things — even destroy religious nations, tear down high places and set captives free from slavery to religion.

To rephrase this, it can be said that New Covenant disciples have the same responsibility, authority and power that Jesus had to destroy religious nations, tear down high places and set captives free from slavery to religion. Or, to put it more strongly, New Covenant disciples must put their emotional and relational lives on the line for their religious friends or they will be like the men who, instead of producing good fruit (i.e. lead religious captives to freedom), built a house on sand and were sent away to eternal punishment because they did not feed the hungry (i.e. religious people who do not have spiritual food) or visit the spiritually sick (i.e.those who are religious) in prison (i.e. captivating religion). They do not understand that the only kind of religion that God honors is the work that helps spiritual widows (i.e. they do not have God as their spiritual husband) and orphans (i.e. they do not have God as their spiritual father).

Going back into the lions den of religion to set captives free is the true marker of New Covenant disciples. That is what Abraham, Moses and other heroes of faith mentioned in Hebrews 11 did. In fact, we find in the narrative about Reuben and Gad that God called failure to go to war on behalf of their brothers sin. This is a hard word for religious people to accept and act on.

God speaks in several places about setting slaves free. It is hard for us in these modern times to understand how these scriptures can apply to us until we recognize that anyone who participates in religion, whether as a leader or follower, perpetuates the practice of religious pride, abuse and control that God calls slavery. Therefore, anyone who is a friend of the world of religion is an enemy of God. Helping others get free from religion is the fulfillment of God’s command to remember that we were once slaves in Egypt and that we were also slave masters whenever we evangelized, encouraged or pressured someone to practice religion.

In Biblical terms, after we join the battle we enter into an eternal (i.e. seven day) Sabbath rest. That may sound like a contradictory statement, but that is how God sees it. Doubting this, all we need to do is look at the story of Israel’s defeat of Jericho. All Israel had to do was walk around the city and shout. God did the work of demolishing the walls. Of course Israel had to carry the Ark of the Covenant, but that is not physical work because the ark symbolizes the God’s laws written on the hearts of New Covenant believers. Basically, all Israel had to do was believe that Jericho would fall. God did the rest. This is real faith.

God does the spiritual work to transform us, but we must also apply the characteristics of the kingdom of God in our lives in our effort to set captives free from religion. Here is a brief summary of those characteristics:

The kingdom of God is a spiritual (i.e. heavenly) kingdom — not a physical kingdom that can be seen, touched, heard or shaken.

The kingdom of God is under his authority only — not under any human authority (i.e. gods) — and he is the only one who teaches his people.

God keeps his people faithful to the kingdom through love and forgiveness.

God’s kingdom does not have any written laws. His laws are written on the hearts of New Covenant disciples.

God’s kingdom has no beginning and no end.

Clearly, these night and day differences between God’s kingdom and worldly kingdoms should make it easy to recognize one kingdom from another. But, because people in the kingdom of the world can only see what they see with their natural eyes, they cannot see nor imagine a spiritual kingdom. The only kingdoms they know are those created by men.

The problem is, however, that religion taught us, and we believed, that we were already in God’s kingdom. This is the great handicap of Old/First Covenant religionists. They have natural eyes and ears that compel them to see and do natural things created by and written by men, but do not have eyes to see spiritual truth created by God. New Covenant disciples, on the other hand, do have spiritual eyes and ears that enable them to understand the spiritual meaning of all difficult scriptures and are able to discern God’s kingdom from worldly religious kingdoms created by men. They know full well that God has delivered them out of Egypt (i.e. religion).

Getting down the basics of RELIGION, we see that the kingdom of the world (i.e. religion) consists of human organization, laws, physical props (e.g. buildings, clothing, artifacts, music, food, drink, etc.) and physical activities (e.g. singing, kneeling, bowing, eating, drinking, pilgrimages, raising hands, fasting praying, etc.) led by humans. We contrast these physical things with God’s kingdom which has no physical content, is invisible (i.e. spiritual), exists only within people, and is under his sole authority.

People who dismiss these differences as small and insignificant while holding fast to their religious practices cause great trouble for themselves and others. They do not realize that failure to see religion the way God sees it makes them enemies of God because there is no room in God’s kingdom for any other gods, no matter how spiritual they might seem to be and no matter how eloquently they can speak about God or for God.

SETTING RELIGIOUS CAPTIVES FREE
In Bible times, when one king battled with another king and won, the winning king took the people from the defeated kingdom home and forced them to worship the gods and idols of his kingdom. The captives became slaves who were obligated to work for and worship the conquering king who was commonly considered to be divinely appointed to his kingship. This is the context in which God sets people free from religion in which they are obliged to worship and serve other gods (i.e. kings that function as religious leaders). This kind of warfare goes on today, but the war is won with words that deceive and attract people to join a religion — not with physical weapons. Religious people call it evangelism. God calls it making sons of hell.

Enemy kings who fear losing their slaves will, of course, resist the soldier’s attempts to rescue their slaves so they can enjoy freedom as citizens of God’s kingdom. Kings will do whatever they must to hold onto their slaves while discrediting, disarming, discouraging and bullying those who want to set them free. This is exactly what happened to Jesus and is the spiritual environment in which all of God’s soldiers do battle with the enemy for people who are slaves to other gods.

This ongoing battle is the basic story of the Bible. It is a story told in a variety of ways at the personal and community level. It is all about the challenges of getting free from religion and then going back to set other captives free. Fighting this battle with religious enemies is the fulfillment of the scripture that says it is for freedom that we have been set free. But this scripture does not mean only that we should live lives free from religion. Just as important as our freedom is the help we give to others who are still religious. In other words, we overcome religion and then help others overcome it. This is how we lay down our lives for our friends.

STUDY TIP: See Two Deaths

The command to lay down our lives for our friends is a difficult command for casual Christians to understand. They tend to see fulfillment of the command as doing good for others in one way or another. Jews don’t feel obliged to obey Jesus’ commands, but they are very big on obeying God’s commands and doing good to others.

However, neither Jews nor Christians understand that the command to lay down their lives carries the same risks as God’s commands to destroy religious kingdoms. Religious leaders, like kings, queens and princes of worldly kingdoms, do not take kindly to rebellion. What the Pharisees did to get rid of Jesus is a graphic picture of what any religious leader will do to discredit, deter and eliminate threats to their authority, social standing and income. Spiritual warfare is no exception.

W could say that Jews and Christians have willfully overlooked or ignored the command to destroy religious kingdom out of self interest: They would need to tear down idols and high places for which they have great affection. It is more accurate to say, however that Jews and Christians have not obeyed the command to destroy religious kingdoms because God has not opened their eyes to understanding the mystery of warfare.

Once God does open their eyes they will not call themselves Jews or Christians anymore, When the New Covenant is established in them, they have a new name (i.e. identity. character) which only they and God know. From that point forward, they will no longer have a need or desire to be publicly recognized as a member of a religious organization or any of its subgroups. They are done with working with their hands to make a public name for themselves as spiritual people who are close to God.

As New Covenant disciples, they will sacrifice the security of being part of a recognized community (e.g. worldly Babylon, worldly Jerusalem, etc.) that has been a critical part of their life to the degree that it has become an idol that they could not do without (i.e. they were intoxicated and addicted to it). Instead, they will be satisfied that they are members of God’s invisible, spiritual community (i.e. invisible, spiritual Jerusalem). All that matters for them is that God’s laws are written on their hearts. They are no longer motivated by or directed by by human laws and religious leaders. When the law is written on their hearts they will understand that warfare with the purpose of setting captives free from religion is not optional for God’s chosen people. They, like Jesus, will willingly suffer the wrath of the religious establishment by openly criticizing its traditions and correcting its doctrines.

The inability of Jews and Christians to set people free from religion would seem to be bad news for people who are held captive to religion. There is good news, however, in the fact that in this present age many people are breaking free from religion themselves. We see this phenomenon in the statistics about the decline of religion. But this is good news only if those who do break free follow God’s command to reach back and set others free also. And they will do this when they realize that it is for the freedom of others that they have been set free and that failure to do this kind of work is not optional for New Covenant disciples.

Or, to put it more strongly, New Covenant disciples must put their emotional and relational lives on the line for their religious friends. If they are not willing to sacrifice their lives, they will be like the men who, instead of producing good fruit (i.e. lead religious captives to freedom), built a house on sand and were sent away to eternal punishment because they did not feed the hungry (i.e. religious people who do not have spiritual food) or visit the spiritually sick (i.e.those who are religious) in prison (i.e. captivating religion).

Being intoxicated with defiled religion (i.e. religion based on traditions of men and empty religious works) they do not understand that the only kind of religion that God honors is the work that helps spiritual widows (i.e. they do not have God as their spiritual husband) and orphans (i.e. they do not have God as their spiritual father).

ENEMY OF GOD OR ENEMY OF RELIGION
Given the ubiquitous presence of religion in all cultures, temptations to be religious are ever-present and, for many, irresistible. It seems fair to say, however, that no one would submit to religious temptation if they knew that doing so would make them an enemy of God instead of a friend. It is critical, therefore, to understand who is, and who is not, God’s enemy and who is and is not our enemy.

Jews and Christians like to think that they are God’s friends. Little do they know, however, that they are actually God’s enemies. Here several reasons why this is true:

They have idols in their hearts.

They do not listen to God’s voice.

They listen to idols (i.e. religious leaders/teachers) who function as False Prophets that lead people away from God.

They are unfaithful to their covenant promise to follow all of God’s commandments.

They have made unique names for themselves by building religious organizations.

Thinking in terms of warfare, Jews and Christians are enemies of God because, in addition to the above sins, they do not follow his command to utterly destroy religious kingdoms. If they do not see fit to destroy those religious kingdoms, it is because they are citizens in good standing of those kingdoms and would not want to see the kingdom to which they belong destroyed. Being friends with the world of religion, they are enemies of God. This situation is what Jesus was referring to when he talked about serving two masters.

Old/First Covenant religionists are in the business of advancing religion — not destroying it. Thus, religion is their master and they do not see themselves as enemies of God. To the contrary, they are deceived into seeing themselves as ambassadors and even missionaries for God. In their deception, they do not realize that they are really ambassadors and missionaries for religion. This reality exists because they sin in the following ways:

They keep themselves and others in bondage to man-made rules and leaders.

They choose to listen to False Prophets instead of God’s voice.

They are so intoxicated with religious tradition that they do not realize how tradition controls their thinking and behaviors.

Giving them credit for sincerity and good intentions, we can say that none of them set out to be God’s enemy or practice idolatry. But the fact remains that, in God’s eyes, this is exactly what they do.

When we apply a New Covenant perspective (i.e. God teaches his people himself), it becomes painfully obvious that religious kingdoms/nations (including Judaism and Christianity) are not only enemies with each other, but are also God’s enemies because they are friends with the world of religion. Being locked into the Old/First Covenant religious paradigm (i.e. a human mediator always teaches about God), the ultimate, although unstated, purpose of both Jews and Christians is to enslave people to their particular religions — not to set captives free from any and all religions.

Slavery might seem a harsh term to describe religion, but this is the language that God uses to represent the difference between having his laws written on our hearts (i.e. freedom) and following religious rules (i.e. slavery/bondage) created by humans. We first learn this principle in the story of Israel in Egypt.

When Israel first went down to Egypt, it was a good place to be during the season of plenty. Life was good because they had food, land, and a brother who was close to Pharaoh. After the season of plenty, and during the season of famine, however, the freedom and prosperity Israel had turned to slavery and death. This story is a picture of how it is for Jews and Christians. It begins with a season of plenty where life in religion (i.e. Egypt) is good. They are well fed and prosperous. But it ends badly when there is a spiritual famine.

STUDY TIP: See this link for understanding of the symbolism of Pharaohs.

There is much to learn from Israel’s time in Egypt, but none of it makes any sense unless we first understand that it was all according to God’s plan. God allows the seasons of plenty, prosperity and growth. God also ordains the following seasons of spiritual famine and bondage. In order to apply this story to ourselves, it is necessary to apply to individuals — not to a group of people all at once. It is a parable of our individual experiences with religion. Why we get into it and how we get out of it.

We get into religion for the same reason that Eve ate of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil: It seemed good for food. But, seeking for spiritual food from any source other than God is sin for which he exiles us from his God’s presence (i.e. Garden of Eden). Thus, if we choose to seek spiritual food from another source (i.e. idol), God lets us do that until we learn that spiritual life comes only from God’s mouth.

We get out of religion because it no longer satisfies us and because we have become slaves to the religious system and its leaders (i.e. Pharaohs). But just seeing this truth is not enough. We must also cry out to God for deliverance and repent for seeking spiritual food from religion and its many idols.

Although religious people do not realize that they are enslaved to religion, non-religious people often understand what is happening and criticize religious people for their mindless, stupid, attraction to religion. Since God actually hates religion, public displays of religion effectively discredits and misrepresent God in the eyes of people who observe religion with a skeptical eye. A wrong view of God as a god who expects his people to follow rituals and traditions is not attractive and does not compel non-religious people to seek him. This view represents God as someone to be feared because of the consequences of not following religious rules that are actually made by men — not by God. The real appeal of religion, therefore, is acceptance in a community of like-minded people that affirms and encourages its members to be religious because religious worship feels good. But this acceptance is conditional: Obedience to the religious community’s traditions and rules.

Life is good for those who join a religion and follow the traditions and rules. But woe to those who break with those traditions or disobey religious rules. If the violations are extreme and long-standing, offenders will be punished and perhaps even removed from the religious community through subtle or even not-so-subtle means. Religious law-breakers are not welcome in religion.

The worst offender of religious laws in the Bible was Jesus. He paid for his lawbreaking with his life. But, breaking religious laws was what he and his followers are commanded to do.

John the Baptist and the Apostle Paul also paid high prices for their challenges to the religious system (i.e. Judaism). In Biblical terms, these men suffered death because they refused to obey Judaism’s religious rules and follow its traditions. But more than that, they spoke out against Judaism in ways that drew the attention of Jewish leaders who did what they could do to silence them.

What we learn from the experiences of Jesus and his most ardent followers is that persecution and rejection is normal for anyone who makes a break from the traditions of their religion and then dares to speak up against it. This is exactly what people who break from religion in any age, including today, can expect if they dare to speak out against religion. This was how prophets of old were treated when they spoke the truth, and it is how prophets of today will be treated when they follow God’s command to utterly destroy religious kingdoms.

Because Jesus and his friends broke religious laws/rules/traditions and spoke out against Judaism, they were persecuted by the religious leaders who had the most to lose from destruction of the religious system: The Pharisees, Scribes and temple leaders. By disobeying and challenging Judaism’s rules, rituals and traditions, Jesus, John the Baptist and Paul became enemies of Judaism. A kind of warfare ensued when they dared to expose their opinions and backed them up with behaviors that were inconsistent with traditional Judaism. This is how they followed God’s commands to utterly destroy religious kingdoms, and in doing so they made themselves targets for abuse and persecution. This is what followers of Jesus can expect to experience when they confront false prophets (e.g. pastors, rabbis, apostles, evangelists, etc.)

CAPTURED BY THE ENEMY
Although many Old Testament scriptures portray death by the sword as the conclusion of warfare, many other scriptures report that enemies capture people and takes them away to their kingdoms where they serve as slaves. Unless we read very carefully, however, we will not recognize that God allows enemies to capture Israel and the ark of god because God uses the enemy to punish Israel for its unfaithfulness.
