These are fair questions that we also ask and research before reading websites and blogs dealing with religion. Therefore, assuming that some readers will want to know a little about us, we offer the following review of our personal experiences in and out of religion.

The significance of our history is not that we I have a unique history that is worth reporting or that we are special in any way. We are a common, middle class, Midwestern couple without social pedigrees, degrees, wealth or reputations that would attract anyone to us personally or to our story. The significance of our history, however is that it could be, and should be, common to all religious people. In other words, everyone, regardless of their personal religious history can learn something from our history.

In summary, we spent most of our lives in religion, and then, little by little, God opened our eyes to the emptiness of religion. That caused us to study to discover what God wanted for us instead of religion. What we eventually learned is that God hates religion and that he has a clear alternative in mind for his people.

This website therefore is the result of the process we have endured in our escape from the sin of religion to the Promised Land.

The first thing we want to declare is that we are not now involved with organized religion in any way. It might be said by those who like to use labels that we fall in the SBNR category, but we do not think that label does any better job describing us than Nones or Dones does to describe others. Furthermore, we are not comfortable judging (i.e. calling) ourselves “spiritual.” To do so would be the equivalent of drawing attention to our status with God so that others will find us special in some way. Nevertheless, SBNR is a term that some people may find useful to identify where they are, so we have included it to help people connect with others.

One of the problems with labels is that they are only a snapshot in time and do not say anything about where we came from or where we are going. We know where we came from, of course, and even though we have moved, and are still moving away from practicing organized religion, it is important for us to declare that we retain many fond feelings about our religious history and the friends we made along the way. We did not leave angry or hurt, but we left purposely and decisively, but not without doubt and uncertainty about where we would be going or what we would be doing without religion.

Although our future was unclear, we never had any doubt that God created our unique religious history for our instruction and did not despise any of it — including the years we spent deeply intoxicated with religion — in any way. That history included many years where we were proud to call ourselves Christian, proud to be associated with several solid, name brand churches populated by many faithful Christians with whom we enjoyed sincere fellowship, and proud of the esteem we enjoyed in the eyes of other Christians. We were so full of pride that we did not understand then, as we understand now, how important it was for us to have others praise us for our religiosity.

In our ignorance, religion was all good and we will admit that, even though we have been disengaged from religion since 2005, we still occasionally miss some aspects of it and shamefully find some of those old religious attitudes and behaviors surfacing again. These are the lingering effects of religious toxicity.

But that was then and this is now, and we are very mindful of the fact that only a few years ago we would have been in the “Still Religious” category. Even though we are no longer involved in religion, we are still very respectful of the place of religion in our spiritual life and in the life of others. This is right, of course, because, when God gave the commandment to honor our fathers and mothers, he meant our spiritual parents which includes everyone who ever taught us while we were involved in religion as well as those who teach us after we leave religion. And we must not ignore that God said that the law of religion leads us to faith.

Given our history, some forum visitors might be surprised that we invite people of all religions –even atheists and agnostics — into forum conversations. They might seem out of place and irrelevant to forums oriented to Jews, Muslims and Christians, but, because the potential for doubt and conflict are present in all religions, we want to provide forum opportunities for everyone. To punctuate that point, we will say that there was a long period when I () identified more with atheists and agnostics than Christians. But, even though I had that identity, I was invited into a small Bible study group that was the beginning of where we are today. Therefore, we never want to be exclusive and always want to be inclusive.

We hope that our personal disclosures will help readers appreciate our sincerity when we say that we understand that it is hard to overcome religious habits and thinking. Even though we have not been part of a religious community since 2005, we are still surprised and shocked to find that the subtle, toxic effects of religion are still present in our lives.

We also know that it is also very hard to gain freedom from religion when family and friends continue in their religion. Because there is great opportunity for conflict when differences of opinion about religion are exposed we expect that sponsoring this website will cause trouble for us with friends and family members who are still religious. Nevertheless, we willingly accept the conflict with the hope that our story will somehow influence others to overcome their affections for religion and embark on the journey to New Covenant discipleship.

Go to the next page for a review of our religious history.

CHRONOLOGY OF OUR RELIGIOUS HISTORY
Although we were raised in different states our histories are quite similar up until the time we married. Our white, middle-class families were both part of established, mainline denominations in which we were thoroughly indoctrinated. We were married in a church and attended church for a couple of years after marriage. That is the point where we will begin outlining our history in some detail.

We first became disaffected with church in our late twenties (late 1960’s). There seemed to be no life in it for others and there was surely no life in it for us. So we completely disengaged from organized religion.

About fifteen years later, my wife began having stirrings that caused her to want to go back to her childhood religion. So she began “going to church” and joined a Bible study. had no such stirrings and did not attend. This lasted for about two years, during which time our children who were in their early teens began going to Sunday school and enrolled in confirmation class even though they were never baptized as infants.

Then, while still an avowed atheist/agnostic, began attending a men’s Bible study. He also began attending church regularly with my wife. Our children also attended church until their confirmation was complete.

One and one half years later, became a committed believer (or at least as committed as an Old Covenant believer can be). This happened while attending a mainline denomination.

Because of trouble in the church we were attending, friends left to “go to” another church. We did not like how the church we were attending was treating the pastor (he was now a friend and a member of the men’s Bible study), so we left the church also.

We became very involved in the new church (in an evangelical denomination) and attended regularly. It was a time of great spiritual growth for both of us and we made many friends there.

Two years later there was trouble in this church also. This time the pastor caused the trouble, but the elders made bad situation worse by handling it poorly. Again, we did not like how the church was dealing with the pastor or with the trouble so we left for another denomination.

The new church was Pentecostal/charismatic. We thought we had really arrived in a denomination that really knew how to worship and could not imagine ever leaving. Here we again became very involved and attended church regularly.

Two years later there was more trouble involving the lead pastor who was involved with a woman in the church. Again we did not like how the elders handled the situation, but we stuck it out. Staying was hard because we were angry with the church leadership and unable to forgive them for how they had treated the offending pastor and other associate pastors who had committed no offense. Needless to say, any illusions we might of had about this church being home for the rest of our lives were shattered, but we stayed because we did the hard work of reconciliation with the elders.

After four years of heavy involvement in that church, we left. The reason this time was not because of disaffection or anger over policies. Rather, we left because we felt that God wanted us to leave that one church and go to be a part of the larger Body of Christ. That meant that we were to not be members of one church but that we should “go to” different churches each Sunday. At first it was hard to do because we had real prejudices regarding the doctrines and religious practices of other denominations. But we soon learned that we could go and worship and fit in wherever we went. God dealt with our prejudices and we learned to become a part of the larger Body of Christ. This went on for one year. It was a very good year for us spiritually.

After one year of not having a church home, we desired to have one again. After visiting several churches during the year, we had picked out two (an old Baptist and a new Pentecostal) that we thought would be good fits for a permanent church home. We still labored under the illusion that there was a perfect church for us.

But God had different plans for us. He sent us back to the church we had left in anger five years earlier. Again we became very involved in church. And again we could see errors in leadership. Still we stuck it out for five years. This was a time of great spiritual growth for us, but not so much because of what we were learning Sunday mornings, but because of what we were learning by watching how church business was done. We began to see how church was more of a business and social club than a place where people could receive real ministry for real needs. It was a frustrating time but very educational.

This church planted a new church in a neighboring town. We were invited by the pastor of the church plant to leave our current church home and be a part of the new church. Because of frustration over lack of opportunities for us to minister to hurting people in our current church, we were ready to leave with hopes that this brand new church would not have the same problems we encountered in other churches.

We were active members of the church plant for two years. For most of that time we traveled to one or two small group meetings (which we led) a week plus trips on Sundays for church.

After two years we could see that life in the church plant was going to be very much like life in the parent church. At the same time. God began to open our eyes to our Hebrew roots. Even though we did not know what the alternative to conventional church was, we were ready to say goodbye to church as we had known it and venture out on our own. So we left on good terms in 2005 and, for the first time ever, began to seriously study for ourselves. We have not been part of a church since 2005. The only time we go to church is for weddings and funerals.

Study of our Hebrew roots took us back to the Pentateuch (first five books of the First Covenant). In our studies we came to believe for the first time that everything written in the Law (Torah) was still valid. For example, we accepted that the Law of the New Covenant that is written our hearts is the same Law that is revealed in the symbolic interpretation of the literal law. We could see that statements we had heard in church about not wanting to be under the Law were bad doctrine. We read John 1 (where it says that the Word became flesh) with new awareness that Jesus and the Law were the same thing. This was radically confirmed for us in a new understanding of Jesus’ words that He came to fulfill the spiritual law that is found when we discover the spiritual interpretation of the written law.

Our Hebrew Roots (i.e. Messianic Judaism) phase lasted about five years. It ended when we realized that we had just traded one religion for another and that we were now religiously practicing Messianic Judaism.

Next we studied randomly throughout the Bible while always attempting to connect scriptures together into a coherent whole. This gradually became easier as we learned how to interpret the spiritual meanings of the literal words. We didn’t realize it at first, but what we were really learning to do was listen to God’s voice while we were studying. This experience is discussed in LISTEN FOR GOD’S VOICE WHILE READING.

Since about 2010, our study has been mostly topical. That means we study to Assemble the Puzzle of parables, dark sayings, symbols, types and patterns, figurative language, shadows and deep mysteries that are hidden in throughout the Bible.

Along the way, we learned to hear God’s spoken voice, and never listen to false prophets.

We have learned how to enter into God’s alternative to religion.

Continue to the next page for more details about life after we stopped practicing religion.

LIFE AFTER RELIGION
After our relationship with institutional religion ended in 2005, we entered into an exciting new spiritual life in which we were dependent on no individuals and no organizations for instruction. We took seriously what God says about digging our own spiritual wells and began to study both the Old and New Testaments looking to discover how fully integrated the Bible is. It was just us and God as provided in the New Covenant where we are taught by the spirit of God – not by a human teacher. From that point forward, we did our best to avoid interpreting the Bible literally. We always read to understand the symbolic meaning which is the spiritual law. This ability did not come quickly or easily.

Even though we had rejected church, we replaced it with another religion: Messianic Judaism. Our understanding of that religion required that we work our way through the Old Testament on the weekly Torah and Haftarah reading schedule. We thought that if we did what the Jews did, and merged it with our understanding of Christian doctrine, we would be doing the right thing in God’s eyes. For us, this was the best of both worlds (Judaism and Christianity).

As good Messianic Jews do, we spent most of our time in the Pentateuch, which is loaded with symbolism that is impossible to understand if we rely exclusively on intellectual knowledge. Even after consulting our dictionary and concordance that led us to related scriptures elsewhere in the Bible, we often found ourselves lost after wandering downs “rabbit trails.” Sometimes we could not remember where we started and often found other topics along the way that we were enticed to explore.

For the first few years we found more questions than answers, but that was OK because we were satisfied by the asking, knocking, seeking process. We did not always find the answers that we were looking for, but we had fun winding our way through the Bible and we found just enough answers to keep us engaged and hopeful that more answers would come sometime soon. What we learned in this process is summarized in STUDY, Study for Discipline, Study Tips, Bible Study Tools, and Free Online Bible Study.

A NEW CONFIGURATION OF CHURCH
Predictably, relationships with our church friends suffered when we quit church because we were no longer in agreement about what church was. We began to learn what Jesus meant when he said he came with a sword — not to bring peace. However, even though we missed the social opportunities that church provided, we were never entirely alone after we left church.

Since then we have been part of a series of very small study groups with people who were more or less on the same journey as we were. And God has been generous to introduce us to many new people who have enriched our social and spiritual lives. These people kept us from total isolation and provided a stimulating learning environment for us — even though we did not always agree on how to interpret the Bible.

In that evolving community of ex-church searchers we learned that relationships with like-minded people are necessary to spiritual growth — as long as we do not look to any one person (e.g. Pastors, Priests, Rabbis, Apostles, Bishops, Elders, Deacons, Overseers, Rabbis, Popes, Missionaries and Evangelists, etc.) as the only one with all the answers. We are all in process together and all are equipped to apply spiritual gifts for our mutual benefit.

Because of the respect we have for our own history and the personal spiritual journey that others are on, we hope that the forums in the Religious Detox Network will be a place where Christians, Jews, members of all other religions, and even atheists an agnostics, can come to together to share their journeys and their doubts about God and religion.

We had a small community of like-minded people like that during the early years of our transition and it was very important to us because it replaced the fellowship and learning environment we enjoyed while we were still religious. It is because of that community experience that we want others who may feel alone in their thinking about religion to have a place to share their journey and find someone with whom they might travel. That is why we created this website, and it is why we emphasize networking with others for study.

However, being in a virtual community is not the same as being in a religious community or a small group of like-minded friends. That is why we did not develop the Religious Detox Network to be like so many other superficial social networks found on the internet. Internet friends are nice, but they are no substitute for friends with whom you can talk face-to-face and study the Bible. That is why we have structured the Religious Detox Network so that it encourages and facilitates networking of small groups of people who can relate to others who are at the same place, more or less, on the religion spectrum.

To emphasize the importance of these networking relationships, we must say that we would not be where we are today if we did not have a few friends who wanted to engage in sustained, serious Bible study with us. While meeting and studying with these friends, we have learned that there is a special dynamic in small groups that facilitates spiritual growth in ways that organized religion never could do or would do. That is why we call this the Religion Detox Network, and why we have provided opportunities for Nones, Dones, Spiritual But Not Religious, and Still Religious people to connect with and communicate with others who might be in the same place as they are regarding religion through online forums.

The big problem with religion has always been that it always has charismatic leaders designated to do the teaching. This habit does not provide a good environment for asking questions, raising doubts and exchanging personal insights gleaned from personal Bible study. These limitations are overcome in small groups where all come as equals and all participate with equal responsibility. But, finding a local, accessible group is hard, and maybe impossible, unless a mediator helps individuals make connections. That is where the networking forums can be helpful.

When we decided that we would no longer depend on charismatic leaders to teach us, we created the opportunity for God to teach us directly according to the terms of the New Covenant. And, by studying with others, we created the environment in which we can learn from others who also earn by listening to God’s spoken voice.
