That may or may not be true, but it has surely become a major player in the religious landscape since it emerged on the religion scene in the early 1900’s.

It is arguable that evidence of Baptism In the Holy Spirit through speaking in tongues is the primary distinctive by which Charismatic/Pentecostal denominations are known. While this phenomenon, also known as Glossolalia, does appear in several New Testament epistles, there is disagreement within the broad Christian community about its relevance to all believers. Thus it is a divisive issue within Christianity that spoils God’s desire for unity.

Therefore, in this series of pages we will demonstrate how scriptures regarding Baptism of the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, praying in the spirit and praying in tongues have been misinterpreted and misapplied in the formation of doctrines by both Christians and Jews. And we will show that the issue is much bigger than the divide between those who talk/pray in tongues and those who don’t.

It all stems from failure of both Jews and Christians of all denominations to investigate and understand the spiritual intent behind the literal interpretation of all scripture.

THE FIRST PENTECOST
The first Pentecost occurred at Mt. Sinai when God spoke the words of his law to Israel. All Christians, not just Charismatics and Pentecostals, have missed the truth about the giving of the law and the holy spirit at the two Biblical references to Pentecost.

Thanks to movies and wrong teaching, everyone imagines the giving of the law after the escape from Egypt as a unique historical event when God gave his written law to Moses and Israel. This is commonly pictured as Moses coming down the mountain with the two tablets containing the Ten Commandments.

Understanding of the first Pentecost hinges on understanding of the fact that it happened after Israel left Egypt. Here is a brief review of events that led up to the Sinai incident:***

Events

Commentary

Jacob and his family (i.e. Israel) lived in the promised land.

The promised land

This imagery is further complicated and distorted by a literal reading of another Pentecost story in the Book of Acts.

There are several problems with this picture.

Pentecost is imagined to have already occurred.

A nation called Israel is imagined to have been the recipient of the laws.

The laws are imagined to be words written on stone or paper such as the Bible.

People who carry these images in their minds do not consider how the giving of the law applies to them personally.

People who carry these images miss out on learning scripture about the giving of the law can train them in righteousness and lead them to faith.

The second problem is failure of Christians to take the Old/First Covenant seriously.

The second problem is closely connected to the first problem. Old/First Covenant scriptures are exceedingly difficult to understand if you only consider the literal meaning of scripture. The tendency, therefore, is to skip over and minimize the things that challenge comprehension. And in doing so acquire a wrong understanding of scripture. This is just another example of the law being a stumbling block.

We have argued in throughout this web site that an understanding of Covenants is critical to knowing God. And since The Law is inextricably linked to Covenant, we have also argued that knowledge of The Law is critical to knowing God.

Curiously, Christians who like to say that they are under grace and not under The Law find it impossible to agree that The Law is necessary to knowing God. They have their own ideas about what is necessary to knowing God, and none of them include The Law. They have observed with disdain what the Jews have done with legalism to The Law of Moses, and they want nothing to do with it beyond the Ten Commandments. And yet, they claim to be followers of Jesus who said clearly that he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. This is a big disconnect in Christian thinking.

These and other critical disconnects are the root of errant doctrines that constitute Defiled Religion. All these practices are serious because they misrepresent God and thus violate the Third Commandment. It is risky to say that established doctrines about Baptism of the Holy Spirit are more serious than other errors, but if Pentecostalism is indeed the fastest growing religion, it seems fair to say that wrong beliefs about speaking in tongues as evidence of Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a serious issue for God. Furthermore, lack of understanding about this topic and Covenant make the way for errors in all other doctrines.

The big problem in understanding for Christians is that they have made Pentecost an issue of the holy spirit while missing the fact that Pentecost is really about God speaking his laws into the hearts of his people. Thus the emphasis for Christians is on being filled with the holy spirit (whatever that means) to the exclusion of listening to God’s voice. This means that everyone fails to recognize that being filled with the holy spirit is the equivalent of having God’s law written on the heart.

A cursory study of covenants reveals the following conclusions:

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="550" /></colgroup>

First Set of Conclusions:

God’s relationship with his people is defined by his covenant with them.

The broad terms of the covenant were first revealed to Adam in the Garden of Eden.

God’s covenant with his people was clarified through the five books of The Law of Moses.

The Law of Moses reveals God’s character.

People represent God’s character to the world by living according to the terms of The Law of Moses.

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="550" /></colgroup>

Second Set of Conclusions:

The Old/First Covenant contained the literal law (i.e. The Law of Moses) on which the covenant with God was based.

God used natural terms and concepts in the Old/First Covenant to communicate his spiritual nature.

The Old/First Covenant is impossible to keep for several reasons:

Natural terms and concepts cannot adequately represent God’s character.

The human mind cannot adequately comprehend the nature of God

Being flesh, man’s inclination is to do work.

The inclination to work results in man working with his natural ability to obey religious laws.

In God’s eyes, obedience to religious laws is the equivalent of working for salvation.

The Law of Moses is a stumbling block because natural men will employ natural means (i.e. flesh) to obey the literal law.

The Old/First Covenant leads to spiritual death because it is impossible to keep all the literal laws.

Jesus came to deliver people from their religious activities (i.e. sins).

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="550" /></colgroup>

Third Set of Conclusions:

The New Covenant contained the spiritual law on which the covenant was based.

The New Covenant is the better, and preferred covenant that leads to life.

Obedience to the spiritual law is a matter of faith and trust — In other words, Bible is just history. The only application is to use scripture as an excuse to create a religious event (i.e. feast/holiday/tradition) that God hates.

Pentecostals/Charismatics do their best to personally apply scriptures about Pentecost but they still fail for lack of understanding of the symbolism of tongues. Focusing on New Testament scripture about tongues, they create doctrines out of the fact that some converts to Christianity spoke in tongues. From this they conclude that the physical act of speaking in tongues is normative to Christianity. And so, even though the practice of speaking in tongues was evident in other religions, past and present, Pentecostals ignore what God has said about following the customs of other nations (i.e. religions) and do it anyway.

WORD DEFINITIONS
The best way to begin to understand any Biblical topic is to look at word definitions in both the Old/First Covenant and New Covenant scriptures. With respect to the topic of tongues, it is instructive to look at these words:

Hebrew word saphah that is most often translated as lip and language:

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="550" /></colgroup>

lip, language, speech, shore, bank, brink, brim, side, edge, border, binding

lip (as body p art)

language

edge, shore, bank (of cup, sea, river, etc)

Hebrew word La`az that is translated as strange language in Psalm 114:1:

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="550" /></colgroup>

  speak indistinctly, speak unintelligibly

Greek word Glossa that is translated as tongue in the New Testament:

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="550" /></colgroup>

the tongue, a member of the body, an organ of speech

a tongue

the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations

The conclusions to be taken from these definitions is that tongues or language are typically used as the way of differentiating one nation or country from another. Thus we identify the French by the French language (i.e. tongue), Russians by the Russian language (i.e. tongue), and so on. In the Bible, God uses this convention to differentiate the nation of Israel from all other religious nations. But he does not consider the physical language as the means by which the nation is identified. Rather, it is what that nation says, not the way it says it, that is important to God. And, for God, what someone says is important because speech indicates what is in the heart. This is so because God is always and only concerned with the condition of the heart.

STUDY TIP: See THE HEART IS THE PLACE for understanding of God’s emphasis on the heart.

In God’s view of language, there are only two languages: Old/First Covenant and New Covenant. These two languages represent two very different nations. The Old/First Covenant nation is in the kingdom of Satan, and the New Covenant nation is in the Kingdom of God. God contrasts the extreme difference between the two nations by saying that the Old/First Covenant nation is another world that is as different from his world as clean food is from unclean food. He also differentiates the two nations by calling the Old/First Covenant nation of religion flesh and the New Covenant nation Spirit. These symbolically represent two different nations with that speak with two different tongues (i.e., languages.)

There are many scriptures that contrast the differences between flesh and Spirit. In these we see that the two worlds are so different that the nation of the Old/First Covenant is equated with death, while the nation of the New Covenant is equated with life. The separation between the two nations is also explained as heaven and hell.

OLD TESTAMENT REFERENCES TO TONGUES
Christians tend to think of tongues as a New Testament phenomenon. At this the king was enraged, and his anger burned within him. 13 Then the king said to the wise men who knew the times–for this was the king’s procedure toward all who were versed in law and judgment, 14 the men next to him being Carshe’na, Shethar, Adma’tha, Tarshish, Meres, Marse’na, and Memu’can, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king’s face, and sat first in the kingdom–: 15 “According to the law, what is to be done to Queen Vashti, because she has not performed the command of King Ahasu-e’rus conveyed by the eunuchs?” 16 Then Memu’can said in presence of the king and the princes, “Not only to the king has Queen Vashti done wrong, but also to all the princes and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasu-e’rus. 17 For this deed of the queen will be made known to all women, causing them to look with contempt upon their husbands, since they will say, ‘King Ahasu-e’rus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, and she did not come.’ 18 This very day the ladies of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen’s behavior will be telling it to all the king’s princes, and there will be contempt and wrath in plenty. 19 If it please the king, let a royal order go forth from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes so that it may not be altered, that Vashti is to come no more before King Ahasu-e’rus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. 20 So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, vast as it is, all women will give honor to their husbands, high and low.” 21 This advice pleased the king and the princes, and the king did as Memu’can proposed; 22 he sent letters to all the royal provinces, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, that every man be lord in his own house and speak according to the language of his people.

NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES WITH REFERENCES TO TONGUES

Mark 7:31-35 Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the region of the Decap’olis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech; and they besought him to lay his hand upon him. 33 And taking him aside from the multitude privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue; 34 and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, “Eph’phatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

Mark 16:15-18 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Acts 2:1-17 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and wondered, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

1 Corinthians 14 Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, he who prophesies speaks to men for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than he who speaks in tongues, unless some one interprets, so that the church may be edified. 6 Now, brethren, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how shall I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will any one know what is played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves; if you in a tongue utter speech that is not intelligible, how will any one know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning; 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves; since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 13 Therefore, he who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how can any one in the position of an outsider say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may give thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brethren, do not be children in your thinking; be babes in evil, but in thinking be mature. 21 In the law it is written, “By men of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church assembles and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you. 26 What then, brethren? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silence in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged; 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. 35 If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. 36 What! Did the word of God originate with you, or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 If any one thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord. 38 If any one does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brethren, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues; 40 but all things should be done decently and in order.

TONGUES WILL CEASE
The following scripture will be confusing to those who are not New Covenant disciples.

1 Corinthians 13:8-11: Love never ends; as for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For our knowledge is imperfect and our prophecy is imperfect; 10 but when the perfect comes, the imperfect will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

COMMENTARY: To understand this scripture we must consider it in the context of 1 Corinthians 12 which instructs us about all the spiritual gifts.

The common religious understanding of prophecy is that it refers to foretelling future events. This may explain why some Old/First Covenant religionists appear to embody some of the qualities of human love found in 1-Corinthians 13:4-7.
