THE CONTEXT OF JESUS’ TEACHING ON PRAYER<\/strong>
\nAlmost everyone knows the so-called “Lord’s Prayer”. It is a common liturgical fixture in most Christian churches. It is the “go-to” prayer that religious leaders call on people to pray when they don’t know what else to pray. There is a sense within Christendom, therefore, that it always appropriate to pray the Lord’s Prayer no matter what the occasion is because Jesus told his disciples that this is how to pray.<\/p>\n

It is a very curious feature of the Lord’s prayer that it is always prayed out of context. In order to understand it and pray it effectively, therefore, it must be prayed in the right context. Here are the verses that precede it in Matthew 6:1-8<\/a> with explanatory commentaries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1<\/span> “Beware of practicing<\/a> your righteousness before<\/a> men<\/a> to be noticed<\/a> by them; otherwise<\/a> you have<\/a> no<\/a> reward<\/a> with your Father<\/a> who is in heaven.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n\n
2<\/span> “So<\/a> when<\/a> you give<\/a> to the poor, do not sound<\/a> a trumpet<\/a> before<\/a> you, as the hypocrites<\/a> do<\/a> in the synagogues<\/a> and in the streets<\/a>, so<\/a> that they may be honored<\/a> by men<\/a>. Truly<\/a> I say<\/a> to you, they have<\/a> their reward<\/a> in full<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n\n

\u00a05<\/strong><\/span> “When<\/a> you pray<\/a>, you are not to be like<\/a> the hypocrites<\/a>; for they love<\/a> to stand<\/a> and pray<\/a> in the synagogues<\/a> and on the street<\/a> corners<\/a> so<\/a> that they may be seen<\/a> by men<\/a>. Truly<\/a> I say<\/a> to you, they have<\/a> their reward<\/a> in full<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n\n
6<\/strong><\/span> “But you, when<\/a> you pray<\/a>, go<\/a> into your inner<\/a> room<\/a>, close<\/a> your door<\/a> and pray<\/a> to your Father<\/a> who<\/a> is in secret<\/a>, and your Father<\/a> who<\/a> sees<\/a> what is done in secret<\/a> will reward<\/a> you.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n\n
\n<\/a>Religious people tend to pray the same prayers over and over again thinking that somehow God is impressed with their passion and sincerity as represented in their habit of repetition. In God’s eyes, all these verbal prayers are, fleshly<\/a> religious activity that mean nothing to him because he already knows what people need.<\/a> Nevertheless, contrary to Jesus’ teaching, religious people insist on praying for all their needs.<\/p>\n
