{"id":4060,"date":"2017-09-22T05:33:47","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T10:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/?page_id=4060"},"modified":"2021-10-22T05:45:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T10:45:15","slug":"pharisees-and-scribes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/pharisees-and-scribes","title":{"rendered":"Pharisees and Scribes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PEJORATIVE TERMS<\/strong><br \/>\nAmalek, Balak, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/balaam\">Balaam<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/judas\">Judas<\/a>, and Goliath stand out as especially despicable Bible characters. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pharisees\">Pharisees<\/a> and Scribes would also be near the top of a list of such characters because of the many<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+23;+matthew+6:1-5;+matthew+6:16;+matthew+13:15;+matthew+22:23-46;+mark+12:13-40;+luke+11:37-54;+luke+20:45-47;+luke+6:24-26;+luke+14:1-8\"> hard words Jesus had for them.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although scribes and pharisees were leaders in the Jewish religious community,<a href=\"https:\/\/difference.guru\/difference-between-scribes-and-pharisees\/\"> they were also different in some ways.<\/a> Jesus, however, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=luke+11:37-54;+matthew+23;+mark+12:35-40;+luke+20:45-47\">condemned both groups because of their hypocrisy and the way that they treated the people<\/a>. He did this, even though they, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/lexicons\/greek\/nas\/nomikos.html\">lawyers<\/a>, were experts in the formation of Jewish laws based on their rigid, literal interpretations of the Laws of Moses. This provides an important clue about God&#8217;s attitude about literal interpretations of the law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px;\">STUDY TIP: See<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/gods-written-word-and-gods-spoken-voice\/literal-or-symbolic-interpretation-part-1\">\u00a0Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/gods-written-word-and-gods-spoken-voice\/literal-or-symbolic-interpretation-part-2\">Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 2,<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/gods-written-word-and-gods-spoken-voice\/literal-or-symbolic-interpretation-part-3\">Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 3.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a summary of the reasons Jesus condemned these religious leaders:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/luke\/11-42.html\">Paid tithes but did not administer justice to the people.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>They loved to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=luke+11:43;+matthew+23:6;+mark+12:38;+luke+14:7;+luke+20:46;+matthew+6:1-6;+matthew+6:16-18;+matthew+23:1-12;+luke+20:46-47;+luke+21:1;+john+5:41-44;+john+12:37-43;+romans+2:29;+john+7:18;+2-corinthians+5:12\"> receive attention and praise when they practiced their religion publicly<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They set <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=luke+11:46;+matthew+23:1-4;+acts+15:4-10\">unreasonable standards for religious behavior<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=luke+11:52;+matthew+23:13\">kept people from knowing God<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They took on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+23:6-10;+james+3:1;+romans+2:17-23;+1-timothy+1:6-7\">titles and labels that identify themselves as religious leaders <\/a>who have knowledge and authority to interpret and teach what the Bible says.<\/li>\n<li>They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+23:14;+mark+12:38-40;+luke+20:46-47\">received income from poor people<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+6:1-6;+matthew+6:16;+matthew+23:5\">practiced their religion publicly so they can receive praise from others.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=romans+12:3;+romans+12:9-16;+romans+11:20;+proverbs+3:7;+romans+11:25;+colossians+2:18\">inflated their importance<\/a> because they have special standing in the religious community in which they serve.<\/li>\n<li>They <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/religion\/religion-is-not-faith\/religion-is-commerce\/jesus-and-the-money-changers-in-the-temple-2\">profited from commercial religion<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We do not need to look at this list with great care to see that these characteristics are included in the description of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/3\">false prophets<\/a> who continue to exist in these modern times. We conclude, therefore, that all Pharisees (i.e. religious leaders) and Scribes (i.e. people who preach, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/religion\/religion-is-not-faith\/religion-is-commerce\/examples-of-business-and-commerce-in-religion\/3\">write and sell religious books and other resources<\/a>) are false prophets. Because these people still exist and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/religion\/religion-is-not-faith\/religion-is-commerce\/examples-of-business-and-commerce-in-religion\">do business<\/a>, it is important to know <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/3\">how to identify them<\/a>. It is also important to recognize that people who consume the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/breadfood-and-wine#evilsoulishfood\">evil, soulish words (i.e. food)<\/a> spoken and written by pharisees are also pharisees because they are the spiritual children of pharisees. It is accurate to say, therefore, that all religious people are pharisees.<\/p>\n<p>Christians have a special aversion to Pharisee-ism because Jewish religious leaders were responsible for Jesus&#8217; death and because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/matthew\/passage\/?q=matthew+23:27-28\">Jesus coupled Pharisees with scribes when accusing them of hypocrisy.<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bibleodyssey.org\/people\/related-articles\/pharisees-and-rabbinic-judaism\">Jews are even reluctant to trace the origins of rabbinic Judaism to the Pharisees<\/a>. Clearly, no one wants to be called a Pharisee.<\/p>\n<p>Pharisees and Scribes were the religious leaders of Jesus&#8217; day. In these modern times scribes and pharisees are known by a variety of other titles: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/apostles\">Pastors, Priests, Rabbis, Apostles, Bishops, Elders, Deacons, Overseers, Rabbis, Priests, Pastors, Popes, Missionaries and Evangelists<\/a>. Modern day scribes would include theologians, teachers, writers of religious books and reporters of religious issues.<\/p>\n<p>Because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+23;+matthew+6:1-5;+matthew+6:16;+matthew+13:15;+matthew+16:1-12;+matthew+22:23-46;+mark+8:11-12;+mark+12:13-40;+luke+11:37-54;+luke+20:45-47;+luke+6:24-26;+luke+14:1-8;+luke+16:14-16;+luke+18:9-14\">Jesus strongly criticized the beliefs and practices of scribes and pharisees,<\/a> and because he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+12:1-10;+luke+6:6-10;+luke+13:10-17;+luke+14:1-6;+john+5:5-18;+john+9:1-16;+matthew+9:1-3;+mark+2:16;+mark+2:23-28;+mark+7:1-9;+matthew+15:1-10;+luke+23:1-2\">broke their religious laws<\/a>, his teachings were a serious threat to their religious kingdoms\u00a0 (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/religion\/religion-is-not-faith\/religion-is-commerce\/examples-of-business-and-commerce-in-religion\">churches, ministries, publishing businesses<\/a>, etc.).\u00a0That is why they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+26:1-4;+mark+14:1;+luke+22:1-2;+john+11:51-53;+matthew+12:1-14;+luke+6:6-10;+luke+13:10-17;+luke+14:1-4;+john+5:5-18;+john+7:19-44;+john+9:19-27;+john+8:58-59;+john+10:22-39\">conspired to have him killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus&#8217; teachings are still a threat to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/religion-is-the-kingdom-of-false-prophets\/apostles\">Pastors, Priests, Rabbis, Apostles, Bishops, Elders, Deacons, Overseers, Rabbis, Priests, Pastors, Popes, Missionaries and Evangelists<\/a>. Jesus was on a mission to destroy the religious kingdoms of the religious leaders of his day, and his words survive to destroy the kingdoms of modern day religious leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that religious leaders, past and present, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/passage\/?q=hebrews+3:7-19;+hebrews+4:1-7;+john+12:36-40;+isaiah+6:9-10;+jeremiah+5:21;+jeremiah+6:10;+jeremiah+25:4;+isaiah+42:20;+isaiah+48:8;+romans+11:8;+acts+28:27;+ezekiel+12:2;+psalm+115:6;+psalm+135:17;+matthew+13:10-15;+deuteronomy+29:4;+acts+19:9;+2-chronicles+30:8;+nehemiah+9:25-26;+ezekiel+2:1-6;+mark+6:45-52;+job+22:22;+deuteronomy+6:6;+deuteronomy+11:18;+psalm+37:31;+deuteronomy+32:46;+ezekiel+3:1-10\">do not have ears to hear God&#8217; words<\/a> as spoken by Jesus or other true prophets. Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/religion\/religion-is-not-faith\/religion-is-a-stronghold-of-wrong-thinking\">strongholds of religious thinking<\/a>, and their insistence on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/gods-written-word-and-gods-spoken-voice\">interpreting the Bible literally<\/a> have made them <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/sickeness-disease-blindness-and-deafness\/4\">deaf to hearing God&#8217;s spoken word<\/a>. All that they know is what they have been taught by other religious leaders. They have been taught a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/gods-written-word-and-gods-spoken-voice\/the-law\/two-covenantspart1\/faith-grace-mercy-peace-love-heart-glory-blessing-spirit-and-truth\/oil-water-face-hands\/the-gospel\/8#differencesfalsetruegospels\">false gospel<\/a> about Jesus. That is all they know and that is all they want to know.<\/p>\n<p>Jews and Christians who read these stories of Jesus and the troubles he had with pharisees should not interpret them as historical accounts of the conflict a guy named Jesus had with religious leaders. If they cannot look at their religious lives and say without exception that they<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/john\/14-12.html\"> do all the things that Jesus did<\/a>, and experience all the persecution that Jesus experienced, they must conclude that they are not true followers of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\/jesus\">Jesus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px;\">STUDY TIP: See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\/model-warriors\/2#jesusqualities\">Jesus&#8217; Qualities<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\/model-warriors\/2#jesusministryfunctions\">Jesus&#8217; Ministry Functions<\/a> for details what it means to be a follower of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Christians can say that they are followers, but if their lives do not line up with all aspects of Jesus&#8217;s life(i.e. his personal qualities, his ministry functions), if they do not obey all of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/nas\/passage\/?q=matthew+4:17;+matthew+4:19;+matthew+5:11-12;+matthew+5:16-17;+matthew+5:21-22;+matthew+5:22;+matthew+5:24;+matthew+5:27;+matthew+5:29-32;+matthew+5:37-38;+matthew+5:44;+matthew+5:48;+matthew+6:1;+matthew+6:5-6;+matthew+5:7-8;+matthew+6:19;+matthew+6:33;+matthew+7:1-3;+matthew+7:6-7;+matthew+7:12-13;+matthew+7:15;+matthew+9:38;+matthew+10:16;+matthew+6;+matthew+23:23;+matthew+15:6;+luke+9:23;+luke+18:9-14;+matthew+18:10;+matthew+18;+matthew+10:28;+matthew+11:29;+matthew+12:31;+matthew+15:4;+matthew+16:15;+luke+12:15;+matthew+18:21;+matthew+19:6;+matthew+20:26;+matthew+21:4;+luke+14:12;+matthew+22:19;+matthew+22:19-21;+matthew+22:37;+matthew+6:9;+john+17:6;+matthew+22:39;+matthew+23:9;+matthew+24:4-6;+matthew+24:23-24;+matthew+25:29;+matthew+13:12;+john+3:7;+luke+15:11-32;+luke+16:1-16;+john+14:15;+matthew+26:41;+john+21:15;+matthew+28:19-20;+luke+24:49;+john+13:34\">his commands,<\/a> and if they do not function as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\">true prophets<\/a>,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/angels\"> angels<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\/messiah\">messiahs<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\/the-high-priest\">high priests <\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/mystery\/symbols-signs-types-copies-shadows-and-patterns\/people\/true-prophets\/model-warriors\">warriors,\u00a0<\/a>they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/forum-descriptions\/hypocrisy\">hypocrites<\/a>.\u00a0And if they are religious hypocrites and not true followers, they are pharisees.<\/p>\n<p>This is worth repeating:<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 5.64099%;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 4.87175%;\"><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 89.4871%;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Jesus bucked the religious establishment (i.e. the Pharisees) of his day.<\/li>\n<li>Religious people who are not in open conflict with the religious establishments of their day are pharisees.<\/li>\n<li>People who protect, advance, and support the kingdoms in which they practice their religion, are pharisees. This can include religious leaders such as pastors and prophets, but non-clergy religious activists can also be rightly called Pharisees.<\/li>\n<li>And, if they are Pharisees, they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewaywesee.com\/religiondetoxnetwork\/religion\/religion-is-the-enemy\">enemies of God<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;not followers of Jesus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PEJORATIVE TERMS Amalek, Balak, Balaam,\u00a0Judas, and Goliath stand out as especially despicable Bible characters.
