Because no one wants to be found prideful, few will dare to accuse anyone else of pride because they do not want to be accused of pride in return. For Christians, declining to accuse anyone of pride is an application of “judge not lest you be judged“.

Nevertheless, we must be mindful that God is a consuming fire and a refining fire. What he wants to consume (i.e. burn up, destroy) is our religious pride and all the religious activity (i.e. flesh) in which we take pride. The burning of flesh is represented in Old Testament images of animal flesh burning on altars. Symbolically speaking, religious people are the animals (e.g. goats, bulls, oxen, etc.) that are sacrificed. Whether it is God, or Satan, or Buddha, Mother Nature, or some other spiritual entity, there is a tendency in people to want to relate to it/him/her, and the closer the better. These religious inclinations are all predictable outcomes due to the spiritual famine that exists in the World of Religion. Lacking real spiritual food that comes from God, people will do what they can to create a counterfeit god.

For people who live in communities where name brand religions are an important part of the culture, it is important for individual religionists to somehow communicate that they relate to others who share their spiritual affections and beliefs. This relationship affirms individuals and strengthens the religious community.

There are a variety of ways that individuals communicate their membership in a religious community. Each religion has distinctive beliefs and practices by which adherents demonstrate that they are members in good standing of the religious community. It is necessary for individuals to constantly reaffirm their standing within the religious community for the sake of their personal comfort, security and reputation. Constant, heavy participation in religious activities also contributes to the survival of the religious institution that meets their needs.

In addition to regular observance of religious traditions, there are several other ways that people communicate their membership in a religious community. These ways vary from person to person and depend on their roles and religious traditions in the community. In most religions, it is possible to ascend from a lesser to a greater role by faithfully and aggressively exhibiting the more highly valued public behaviors that, according to the religious culture of the community, indicate a higher level of spirituality and relationship with the spiritual entity (i.e. god).

These patterns all work very well for individuals and the religious communities to which they belong. They are normal, accepted, and necessary to the stability and vitality of all religious institutions. And, as far as the members are concerned, they are justified and confirmed by the doctrines on which the religious community was established. But that is not the case for Judaism and Christianity.

The difference for Judaism and Christianity is that their doctrines do not line up with the Bible which they claim is the source of direction for all their religious activities. The way we see it, however, is that their doctrines and practices are based on wrong interpretations of the Bible. They are based on literal interpretations of what God said — not on the spiritual intent of what God represented symbolically through the words written in the Bible.

STUDY TIP: See Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 1, Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 2, and Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 3 for discussion on interpreting the spiritual intent of the Bible.

Failure to obey the spiritual intent of what God said in the many MYSTERIES and Symbols, Signs, Types, Allegories, Parables, Copies, Shadows and Patterns found throughout the Bible keeps deceived, well-meaning religionists in Old/First Covenant religion where they will work hard to comply with all the Laws, Commands, Decrees, Statutes and Ordinances detailed in The Law of Moses. In doing this they fall into the trap of The Law as a Stumbling Block and remain in bondage to RELIGION that, in God’s eyes, is Defiled — not Pure.

One common indicator of Defiled Religion is the presence of one or more of the many subtle manifestations of spiritual pride and boasting that inspire religionists to develop and maintain their place in a religious community. These behaviors are obscure to the point of invisibility within individual religious communities because everyone does them and they are encouraged through common public practice. No one within a particular religion questions or doubts the appropriateness of the behaviors because they are the norms of behavior, affirmed and strengthened by generations of tradition, for each religion. They are hidden, powerful strongholds that subtly influence everything religionists do within their religious community. But they are not hidden from God nor are they prescribed by God. In fact, God has given clear warnings about these behaviors which we have exposed throughout this website.

While religionists do not see their public speech and behaviors as pride and boasting, or as efforts to create reputations as spiritual people, those who are outside a particular religious tradition have a keen eye to perceive what religionists do not see. And when they are noticed, it is usually with a sense of disdain that creates distance between religious and non-religious people. This result, of course, is contrary to God’s desire for oneness among people. It is no mystery, therefore, that God should make clear his views about pride, boasting and public displays of religion.

SPIRITUAL PRIDE
Evidence of pride is always found in boasting. Boasting is generally discouraged in most cultures, but in religion, it is normative behavior because it is built into the fabric of religion. People who would not otherwise consider drawing attention to themselves for any reason will boast about their religiosity because their religious culture encourages them to do so and provides opportunities for religious showmanship through routine practice of accepted religious traditions in public settings. In fact, religious cultures reward their members who boast of their religious activity and do not condemn them for it.

Religionists may not boast verbally, but in God’s view, mere participation in religious activity constitutes boasting. Religious activity contains a message about a religionists relationship to God, and all religious people want to appear to have a strong relationship with God. This is a matter of spiritual pride: Appearing to have a good relationship with God. The more the activity is practiced, the more it says about the religionist’s relationship to God. And, as the thinking goes, those who appear to be closer to God appear to be more Godly through their religious behaviors. This desire to appear to be more Godly is the ultimate goal of spiritual pride. However, none of it means anything to God because he looks at the heart and not at outward appearances.

There is another aspect of spiritual pride that is critical to the life of all religious organizations: Pride in being a member in good standing of a church, synagogue, temple, mosque or whatever. All religionists develop an identity that is based on their membership. If they do all of the things that members of their chosen religious community do, they are accepted as a member of the community. This acceptance is very important to the emotional and psychological well-being of the religionist. The community is like a family that, in some cases, has ties greater than blood.

We see this pride at work when people identify themselves as members of a local church or other religious community or of a larger community such as a denomination. Thus they will typically say “I am a Lutheran” or ” I go to such and such a church.” People who are religious feel awkward and disconnected if they are not able to self-identify with some larger religious organization that has a reputation larger than their own personal reputation. Thus they try to elevate their own status by identifying with the larger organization. This only works for them because they are proud to be a member of the larger organization that has greater status in the community than they do. This is spiritual pride.

Spiritual pride is also at work at the organizational level. It is important for many, but not all, religionists to report that they are involved in a particular ministry within the organization. Thus people will willingly say that they teach Sunday School, or on the prayer team, or that they are elders or ushers or whatever. Having a unique function within the organization yields extra status to the active religionists. They are not pastors or rabbis, but they are not just attenders either. This is another measure of spiritual pride.

RELIGIOUS BOASTING
Perhaps the most common expression of spiritual pride, after regular attendance at religious meetings, is found in speech. Verbal boasting is subtle to the point of invisibility for those who are part of a religious culture because it is the norm within that culture. It may, on the other hand, be very visible to people for whom it is not the norm. For example, consider the practice of praying with beads which is found in several religions and praying in tongues. It is a common practice within those religions, but for others outside the religion it may be regarded with skepticism or even disdain.

Being a member in good standing of a religious community, doing what others in that community do (e.g. praying with beads, carrying a Bible, wearing a kippa, praying in tongues, etc.) has a way of generating spiritual pride. There is something about doing what other religious people do and rubbing shoulders with them that spills over into an enhanced self-concept of spirituality. It all says, in effect: “Look at me! I am religious and I worship in a community of highly religious people.”

In all religions, worship with like-minded people stirs up physical and emotional indicators that are interpreted as spiritual connection with the object of worship. The addictive nature of these indicators keeps people going back to church, synagogue or conferences. Some might call them a “spiritual high” in which people wrongly construe that they have touched, or have been touched by God. And when that experience happens in a particular location, people will also wrongly construe that God shows special favor to people who come to that location and participate in activities associated with it. They think it is all spiritual but it is really nothing more than psychology at work in the practice of religion.

STUDY TIP: See Music, Singing and Dancing for more about spiritual highs.

Boasting is often expressed through relationships with religious people. Knowing the pastor or rabbi, and talking or praying with him/her and other religious leaders causes people to think they are a little closer to God — in their own eyes and in the opinions of coreligionists — because they are in relationship with people who have reputations for being close to God.

The status of religious leaders is measured in their apparent closeness to God. This relationship is often certified by degrees, titles and positions that are conferred on leader by religious authorities who have their own degrees, titles and positions that affirm their individual and collective authority to speak for God and appoint (i.e. anoint and ordain) religious leaders for service in the religious community. And since many other coreligionists have affirmed this authority with praise, listening ears, and money, it is easy to join the crowd of admiring followers. But, degrees, titles and religious posturing and conformance to tradition does not impress God who does not look at outward appearances but looks at the heart.

This spiritual osmosis effect is multiplied when the spiritual leader is well-known and respected within the larger religious community. It increases dramatically when the leader has a large following in a church, synagogue or independent ministry or has written a book or is on television. The subtle thinking says that if many other spiritual people are following this leader, then I will also be spiritual if I follow him/her.

Because hanging around with other spiritual people and doing the things that they do makes us feel spiritual and close to God, people who are inclined to spirituality will tend to participate heavily in activities that have spiritual meaning. There are three problems with this thinking. First, the things that religious people do are based on traditions established by men — not on God’s spoken voice. The second problem is that religious leaders become replacements for God. In other words, they become idols. There we see that what is seen as religion is inconsistent with God’s commandments. In fact, we will go so far as to say that the public face of religion, specifically Christianity and Judaism, is totally contrary to what God has commanded. Indeed both religions have a lot of form that looks good to religionists because the form is cloaked in language and ritual that seems Godly and has been accepted as Godly through generations of religious practice. The problem is that it only seems Godly — there is no power in either kind of religion.

When we bother to investigate the differences, we see that being Godly and being religious are totally contradictory concepts. Godly people are not religious as we define “religious.” Godliness does not have a clear, visible, public face like religions do. Religious people on both sides of these issues have vocally represented their views. However, they do not speak the same religious language. To each denominational stream the language of another stream sounds like babbling gibberish. Rather, they worship other gods and idols (both tangible and intangible) that suit their need for some sort of religion as they create and follow their unique religious traditions in ways that fit their respective cultures.

Christians think that because they believe in Jesus they are New Covenant disciples. But believing in the man Jesus is not enough. Jesus is not just a man. He is not just the Son of God. He is the embodiment (i.e. fulfillment) of the spirit of the Law of Moses. If Christians and Jews understood this truth, they would not continue to practice their own forms of False Religion. They would rest (i.e. cease/stop) their visible, public religious works with full confidence and trust that the Spirit of God was alive and at work in them secretly to practice True Religion when and where God himself chooses to use them. They boast about their knowledge, their spiritual experiences, their visions, their revelations, their faith, their religious activity, the conferences they have attended, the quality of their worship, the people they have counseled or led to the Lord, God sightings, and on and on. There is no end to the variety of religious topics about which they can and will boast.

In doing all this boasting, most of them sincerely believe that it is the right thing to do. And why should they not think that it is appropriate? Everyone else is doing it, so it must be a sign of true spirituality to boast. They justify it all as “witnessing” or giving glory to God, but in fact what they are doing is giving glory to themselves or the religious organization to which they are attached. But, when the motives of their heart are exposed, it is all about them. It is all about building a good reputation as a spiritual person.

For those who are in professional ministry of some sort, such boasting is critical to building a reputation that will encourage others to support them financially or buy their products. Donors and customers need to know that the people they support are doing good work for the Lord, so these false apostles are compelled to broadcast their successes. Thus they talk about their good work, send out newsletters and publish stories in their websites. It is all necessary to the business of religion. They must look good so that they will stand out in the ever-growing field of ministries that are aggressively competing for donations and customers so that they can keep their ministries viable. It is Commercial Religion. And because it is done with wrong motives, it is boasting.

2 Corinthians 11:10-21 NIV As the truth of Christ is in me, this boast of mine shall not be silenced in the regions of Acha’ia. 11 And why? Most will not receive and material rewards for their behaviors, but they will surely receive praise and commendations from fellow religionists who share their religion.

All these behaviors, as we have shown through scripture, are displayed in public for others to see. So being seen and recognized as spiritual, or close to God is the motive for doing religious works. But God does not want his people to hide out in monasteries or caves either. He wants them to be out and about in public, doing business and relationships like any other normal person. He wants them to do whatever they do for his glory and not for personal glory or recognition.

How to let your light shine for God’s glory without bringing glory to yourself is a challenge. Whereas, before the internet when religionists would show off their faithfulness mainly on Sunday mornings, or Saturday for Jews, it is now possible to testify about your religiosity to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people with one click. With blogs and “likes” on FaceBook, internet savvy religionists may literally tell the world about their beliefs. And they do this with prideful satisfaction that they are doing it all for the glory of God.

As we have shown in this series of pages on pride and boasting, however, all this posturing and proclaiming is actually contrary to Godliness and not at all Christlike. Rather, it is religious flesh run amok.

It is difficult to defend this opinion from Old Testament scriptures where public participation in religious activities of one kind or another appears to be the norm. Reading between the lines of the stories about heroes of the faith in Hebrews 11, however, we see that each character endured seasons of relative social isolation along with public visibility. And we also see that as imperfect people, some of them sometimes crossed the line of public displays of righteousness. And yet, in his forbearance, God still regarded them as faithful.

It is in the New Testament that we find our best clues about how we should relate to social media. Consider these scriptures:

John 3:25-30: Now a discussion arose between John’s disciples and a Jew over purifying. 26 And they came to John, and said to him, “Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore witness, here he is, baptizing, and all are going to him.” 27 John answered, “No one can receive anything except what is given him from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before him. 29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom; the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice; therefore this joy of mine is now full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”

COMMENTARY: Different people have their own professed motives for participating in social media. Whatever those reasons might be, having a social media presence that somehow advertises religious affiliations or beliefs has the effect of increasing recognition and status as a religious person. People may argue that gaining recognition is not their motive, but even if it is not a conscious motive, the effect is still there.

This does not mean, however, that it is impossible to use social media for good, Godly purposes. The problem is, however, that doing these things is just another conscious effort to display their righteousness before men. He goes on in verse 7 to say that the religious world that would be celebrating the feast of Tabernacles would not hate them because they would publicly participate in the feast which was an important feature of the Old/First Covenant. He goes on to say, however, that the religious world would hate him because he was constantly saying and demonstrating that all of its religious works, not just the feast, were evil. Despite this strong rebuke, the disciples went up to the feast anyway.

PRIDE DEMANDS TO BE SEEN
Since we are made of flesh, it is impossible to be invisible.
