Lacking a clear understanding of what God means by “name,” it is impossible to understand the commandment.

Names in the Bible are much more than a way of identifying someone. Actually, we see in the Bible that names (“shem” in Hebrew) of people refer to their reputations. Since reputations are based on historical performance (i.e. behaviors, actions, etc.), and since historical performance will always be consistent with basic character qualities, it can be reliably said that a person’s name, in Biblical terms, reveals a person’s true nature, essence or character. This is no less true for God than any other Biblical personality.

Proof of this truth regarding God is found in his multiple names which describe his many character qualities. While there is some dispute among Biblical scholars regarding God’s many names, there is no dispute about his seven names that are clearly articulated in the Bible. Each name reveals a distinct character aspect of God that is revealed in First Covenant scripture. And beyond these there are other scriptures that tell us about God’s character by telling us what he does because what he does absolutely agrees with his character (i.e. name).

STUDY TIP: The character of God is revealed in messiahs (i.e. true prophets) who only speak what the father tells them to say and only do what God tells him to do.

This pattern continues with Jesus, the Messiah, in New Covenant scripture where several names and titles are used to identify him. Although Jesus had many names, the title “son of God” was the most important one because it conveyed the truth that Jesus is the image of the living God. And those who follow Jesus are similarly called children of God.

But being created in the image of God is an elusive concept. Obviously it does not mean a physical image because God is invisible and has no form. Therefore, the only ways that God reveals himself are through his spoken word which accomplishes life-changing miracles when he changes impure hearts to pure hearts.

Because only God has the power to change hearts, people do not represent him by doing miracles, or by obedience to religious laws. Thus, the only way that anyone can represent God (i.e. be in his image) is when God speaks through that person as he did through true prophets and as he continues to speak through modern day true prophets who are created in his image (i.e. are his sons/children/heirs).

The principle of the child taking on the character qualities and authority of the father, just like Israel and Jesus took on God’s character, is affirmed in many New Covenant scriptures. Even the name “Christian” that Jesus’ followers have ascribed to themselves indicates that his name (i.e. character, nature) is established in their nature.

Finally, we must recognize that God has an evangelical purpose for his children who are called (i.e. recognized) by his name (i.e. character) being present in their hearts/spirits. This is a very important principle so we will repeat it: God has an evangelical purpose for his children who represent his character to others.

This purpose applies, however, only to people who remain in covenant relationship with God by keeping his commandments. It does not apply to people who self-identify as Jew or Christian. Such labels mean something in the world, but mean nothing to God who looks only at the heart.

The problem for God that creates the need for this commandment is this: If God’s children do not accurately represent his name/character to the world, the world will not see God as he really is and will not be drawn to him. That is why God insists that people do not take his name in vain.

Putting all these scriptures together, we come to these conclusions:

God chose Israel as the people through whom he would reveal his name (i.e. character) to people (i.e. nations) who did not know him.

God introduced his commandments to teach Israel about his character and committed Israel through a covenant to conform to his character so that they would accurately represent him to people who, because of their hard hearts, cannot hear his spoken voice.

This pattern continues today for all who are legitimate children of God.

A legitimate child of God is someone who accurately represents God to the world.

To keep his children faithful to their part of the covenant relationship, God promised blessings for obedience and curses (i.e. punishment) for disobedience.

When Israel was disobedient to the covenant, it was not simply disobedient to a bunch of arbitrary laws/commandments. It was guilty of several general sins that directly affected God:

A. It was guilty of misrepresenting God’s character to the world.

B. In other words, whenever people fail to represent God accurately, even with respect to the smallest detail, they fail to sanctify him.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: The idea of people sanctifying God is very difficult to understand. Our natural thinking is that God is already holy and set apart, and that there is nothing we can do to make him more holy. That thinking is accurate, but it does not embrace what God is trying to say about Israel’s failure to sanctify him.

What God means in the scriptures that command Israel to sanctify him is that they are to effectively represent him (i.e. be ambassadors) to people. These scriptures could also be written to say, “Sanctify me in the eyes of the nations (i.e. people) through the way you live your life so they will come to know me for who I really am as they see how you love me (i.e. first four commandments) and love them (i.e. last six commandments).”

C. It did not value the fact that God had chosen it as his treasured possession.

D. It was guilty of breaking the covenant in which it had agreed to represent God’s character to the world.

To summarize all this, it can be said, indeed it must be said, that collectively these sins effectively violate God’s command to be fruitful and multiply. This is true because the ability to be fruitful is fully dependent on the degree to which God’s children represent his character to the world. Fruitfulness is accomplished by New Covenant disciples who function as True Prophets sent by God to speak his words to people with hard hearts. Symbolically speaking, God’s word spoken by true prophets is spiritual seed that matures to produce good spiritual fruit (i.e. food.)

It must be kept in mind, however, that multiplication, is not just about having physical babies. Almost anyone can make physical babies, but it takes someone who is created in God’s image (i.e. in his character) to have spiritual children that are also created in God’s image (i.e. spiritual beings). Jesus rephrased that command in this scripture:

Matthew 28:16-20:Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

When he used the term “baptize them” in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, God was not referring to a religious procedure called baptism. He was symbolically referring to the ongoing death and resurrection process by which people are conformed to God’s character. As that happens, people think and act less and less like their old selves and think and act more are more like God. They increasingly acquire his image as their own human character decreases. They are decreasingly motivated by their human, fleshly desires and increasingly motivated by the Spirit of God that lives within them because they are able to hear God’s Voice. They cease practicing Defiled Religion and become New Covenant disciples who practice Pure Religion.

As this process evolves, it could be said that the ratio of spirit to flesh in a person changes. When it begins, the ratio of spirit to flesh is 0 to 10 with 10 being the measure of flesh. We never see in the Bible that anyone becomes fully spirit and 0 flesh. Some get close, but they all have their backsliding seasons that prevent them from entering fully into the Promised Land. But these backsliding seasons are not critical to God because he is willing and able to restore people to the right path.

As the spirit to flesh ratio changes to display more spirit and less flesh, disciples are increasingly empowered to fulfill God’s evangelical purpose to populate the world with people who are conformed to the character/name of God. Whereas disobedience obstructs God’s evangelical purpose of populating the world through people who represent his character, obedience equips and empowers people to spread spiritual seed in the world because they embody that seed in their lives. Their fruitfulness increases as their spiritual capacity increases.

This evangelical principle of God reaching the world through a people (i.e. Israel and all who are grafted into Israel) who represents God’s character through obedience to his laws is perhaps best revealed in this scripture:

Deuteronomy 4:5-15 Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land which you are entering to take possession of it. 6 Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7 For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8 And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law which I set before you this day?

With this scripture in mind we see that obedience to God’s command to listen to his voice has an evangelical purpose. While complex and multifaceted, God’s character is relatively easy to document in terms of scripture. In the page above we cited many scriptures that reveal God in terms of his love, compassion, mercy, and concern for the best interests of all people in view at all times. Next we will learn how Moses came to learn about God’s character. To do that we will look at these verses:

Exodus 33:12-23: Moses said to the LORD, “See, thou sayest to me, ‘Bring up this people’; but thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show me now thy ways, that I may know thee and find favor in thy sight. Consider too that this nation is thy people.” 14 And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him, “If thy presence will not go with me, do not carry us up from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in thy sight, I and thy people? Is it not in thy going with us, so that we are distinct, I and thy people, from all other people that are upon the face of the earth?” 17 And the LORD said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “I pray thee, show me thy glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name ‘The LORD’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the LORD said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand upon the rock; 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23 then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”

Exodus 34:1-7: The LORD said to Moses, “Cut two tables of stone like the first; and I will write upon the tables the words that were on the first tables, which you broke. 2 Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. 3 No man shall come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let no flocks or herds feed before that mountain.” 4 So Moses cut two tables of stone like the first; and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two tables of stone. 5 And the LORD descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 The LORD passed before him, and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

COMMENTARY: Moses and God had a lot of history up to this point. But now that the deliverance from Egypt has been accomplished, they will move into a new phase that will challenge Moses and Israel even more. Moses acknowledges this fact by asking for some kind of guarantee that God will go with them on the rest of the journey. God gives him verbal assurance that he will go with Israel. But that is not enough for Moses. He wants to know God’s ways, and to see God’s glory. In this simple request, Moses says that all his questions and concerns about the journey ahead will be answered if God will reveal his character, or those qualities for which he is to be known (i.e. reputation). In other words, God’s name is his guarantee for success.

God tells Moses to stand on a rock and wait for his glory to pass by. He says he will shield Moses from seeing his face, but that Moses will see his back. If it is our desire to know God as Moses desired to know God, and if the above points are God’s response to Moses request, it is also God’s response to our request to know God. But it is only a partial, or summary answer. The details about how God represents his character in relationship to his people are played out in the rest of First Covenant scriptures, and explained further in the life of Jesus.

KNOWING GOD
The challenge to understand the Third Commandment is possible only by knowing God. Therefore, we will spend some time on this topic before proceeding.

The story of Moses’ dialogue with God in Exodus 33:12-23 and Exodus 34:1-7 is full of symbolism that must be understood in order to comprehend the meaning. Here are the key meanings:

God’s continued presence and favor is conditional on Moses and the people remaining in covenant relationship. That requires constant obedience to God’s spiritual laws. When God said, “there is a place by me where you shall stand upon the rock,” he was referring to all messiahs. Symbolically, this means that to be close to God (i.e. a place by him) it necessary to stand on God’s spoken words.

God’s goodness, glory and name all refer to his unchanging character.

The rock on which Moses must stand is God’s spoken word.

God’s ways and the tablets of stone are God’s spiritual laws written on the hearts of New Covenant disciples.

God in the clouds symbolizes New Covenant disciples who speak for God.

Seeing God’s back symbolizes observation of his works. In other words, he will be known by the things he does that are consistent with his character. Observing his faithfulness to his character and promises adds to our knowledge of God’s character, and that increased knowledge enables us to trust him more.

A cursory reading of Exodus 33:12-23 and Exodus 34:1-7 will not reveal what it means to know God. Indeed, they are quite general, but when combined with what we know about God’s love, compassion, mercy, and concern for the best interests of all people in view at all times, a clearer vision of God emerges. And if we read the rest of the story about God’s relationship with Israel, we see how it plays out in real life circumstances from which we can learn and apply in our own lives.

It is interesting to remember that Moses did not have as much of that story as we do, and yet he enjoyed a relationship with God like no other man before or since. But if the knowledge of God that Moses had was good enough for Moses to guide him in all his travels, it should be good enough for us also. The important thing is that Moses started out with the little knowledge that God gave him, applied obedience (mostly) to the knowledge he had, and God gave him more knowledge as he journeyed through the desert leading others to freedom.

We may have a hard time relating to Moses, but we must consider him a model for our own journey just like we follow Jesus and imitate the Apostle Paul. Moses faced a lot of uncertainty, and we won’t have all the answers in the beginning either, but the answers are not what we need. What we really need is the kind of faith that Moses and other Bible heroes had. Of course, we also need to exercise that faith with obedience, or else the faith counts for nothing.

There is a tendency in each of us that makes us want answers and knowledge before we act because they offer security and because knowledge can be used for control. This can be true regarding knowledge of God also, but there is a point where knowledge of God can become an idol for us. In other words, instead of knowing God in an intimate way, we can become obsessed with knowing about God in the abstract (i.e. theoretically). We see this kind of tendency at work in people who are constantly engaged in various kinds of religious activities — including Bible reading. They wear their intellectual knowledge of God like an ornament and appear to be spiritual, but they do not have a relationship with God. This seems spiritual to religious people, but it means nothing to God.

We do not deny that intellectual knowledge is important to knowing God. In fact, God said that The Law was put in charge to lead us to Christ. But there is much more to knowing God than intellectual knowledge. Churches are full of people who know a lot about God, but who do not know him intimately. That is when the unfruitfulness creeps in. So our desire should be to know God intimately.

STUDY TIP: In Greek, there are three words that are translated as “know” or “knowing.” They are “eido“, “ginosko” and “epiginosko.” If you will click on each of these Greek words, you will find their relative meanings.

The word epiginosko is the word on which we must focus to come to an understanding of what it means to know God intimately. The other two words deal with intellectual and perceptual knowledge.

STUDY TIP: Clicking here will take you to a definition of epiginosko that reveals it to be a type of knowing that is very deep and intimate.

Clicking here will take you to a collection of scriptures in which the word is translated as know, knew, knowing, perceived, and recognize.

Looking at these scriptures we see that when people “knew” Jesus with an epiginosko kind of knowing, good things happened. This is the kind of spiritual knowledge for which we should diligently search. It does not come easily, but it is worth searching for. And it only comes to those who can hear God’s voice.

In First Covenant (i.e. Old Testament) scriptures, this kind of knowledge is equated with “wisdom.” Biblical wisdom, however, is not abstract like we think of worldly wisdom. Biblical wisdom is very real and practical. Unlike worldly wisdom which seems to just show up in our minds when needed, Biblical wisdom has real, specific terms and conditions that God has laid out for us. If wisdom is the embodiment of knowledge and truth, and we would say that it is, then wisdom is nothing less than God’s commandments and statutes (i.e. The Law of Moses).

Tying it all together, we see that epiginosko knowledge is the wisdom that exists behind the written words of The Law of Moses. Recognizing that fact, we have clear direction about where to read to learn about God.

STUDY TIP: Readers who want to know God intimately, must read and understand the books of The Law. Since they are very deep and full of mystery and symbolism, one or two readings will not be enough. It will be necessary to read them over and over again. See Study Tips and STUDY for more about how to study.

It must be said, however, that a study diet that includes only The Law will be unbalanced. God did give us the entire Bible and it is all useful for training in righteousness and preparation for service. It is good to know God conceptually, but it is better to know him through experience. That is what Moses learned when God showed him his back. God said, in effect, that he would reveal himself through his works. So, we should want to read all of the Bible to see God at work in and through his people.

When it comes to our relationship with God, faith is the most important ingredient. In fact, he said that it is impossible to please him without faith. Perhaps the reason God hides in a cloud is that more faith is required to trust him if he cannot be fully seen. Again we will say that if seeing God in a cloud was good enough for Moses and Israel, God in a cloud should be good enough for us.

We mention this about faith to help explain why we will not report much more detail here about God’s character. We could fill an entire website about God’s character, but we will not do that because doing so would only replicate the Bible. We have presented much scripture in this website to aid understanding of God’s character and how he works. But there is a point when readers must venture out on their own to learn about God. Earnestly seeking him is critical to the process of knowing him. That being true, we would not want to deceive you into thinking that we could present to you all the information you need to know in order to know God’s character.

So we leave it up to you to do the searching. We have provided some helpful hints from our own experience, but it is up to you to do the work. And don’t forget to apply what you learn. Faithfulness to God’s covenant (i.e. obedience to The Law) earns great rewards.

RELEVANT SCRIPTURES
Now we will look at the 3rd Commandment. The essential meaning of these scriptures is that people who identify themselves as Jew or Christian are Old/First Covenant religionists who, being very busy observing a bunch of religious laws, misrepresent God’s character to the world which sees God as a God to be feared — not as a God to be loved.

In other words, people who violate the Third Commandment take on God’s name by calling themselves Jew or Christian but do not take on his character. People who are watching Jews and Christians conduct their religious activities, while otherwise conducting their private lives in ways that are inconsistent with what people expect from someone who follows a Holy God, are wrongly led to believe that all that God wants from his followers is that they obey religious rules/laws. There is no sense of what God’s character really is. There is no sense of understanding that what God wants is that people listen to his voice or about his holiness.

UNDERSTANDING THE SCRIPTURES
On the surface, the 3rd Commandment seems easy to understand. Do not swear using God’s name seems straightforward enough, but unfortunately it is a wrong interpretation of what God really means to convey. The way we see it, the 3rd Commandment is the hardest commandment to understand and apply. It is deep, complex and difficult to explain — but we shall try to explain it anyway because it is exceedingly important to God and his people that they do understand.

Here are the key facts that must be considered when coming to a good understanding of the 3rd Commandment:

Looking at the definition of the Hebrew word translated as “vain”, we see that it essentially means empty, or worthless conduct or speech.

And finally, looking at the definition of the Hebrew word translated as “take” or “use”, we see that it essentially means “to carry” or “lift up.” People who call themselves “Christian” therefore “carry” the name of Christ in a literal sense. To be a true Christian, they should also “carry” (i.e. embody, lift up, represent) the true character of Christ (which is also the character of God) in everything they do.

Tying it all together, we get a sense of meaning that is much different than the common understanding of the Third Commandment which is that we should not use God’s name in swearing or verbal profanity. Indeed, use of God’s name in profanity is not a good thing, but we miss the point of what God is saying in the scripture if that is the extent of our understanding.

The way we see it, the simplest and clearest interpretation of the 3rd Commandment is this:
Do not misrepresent God’s character in word or deed. God will punish people who misrepresent him.
Here is the logic by which we come to this understanding:

When people (whether individuals or corporate entities) choose to call themselves Jew or Christian, they boldly and proudly announce to the world that they are people chosen by God. Such announcements are made by publicly applying to themselves titles, degrees and labels that cause others to closely associate them with God. When they do this, they signal to the world that their behaviors will be consistent with God’s character.

After such an announcement is made, people in the world expect individuals and organizations that have labeled themselves as Godly will behave in ways that are always consistent with God’s character. Their expectations may be ill informed if they have not studied the Bible, but even in their ignorance they will still expect such religious people and religious organizations to live up to certain standards of behavior that are more or less consistent with universal understandings about God’s character: Merciful, slow to anger, faithful and loving. Another aspect of God’s character that is generally recognized is justice. People who are disadvantaged and oppressed in one way or another are very sensitive to people who do not practice justice which is often equated with righteousness.

When people and organizations that are labeled as Godly do good things that are fully consistent with God’s character, both they and God receive the praise of men. When people and organizations labeled as Godly do bad things that are not consistent with the world’s impression of what God or Jesus would do, both they and God are discredited (profaned) in the eyes of those who observe the wrong behavior.

When people and organizations that identify themselves with God and Jesus behave in ways that are perceived to be inconsistent with the character of God or Jesus, worldly people will call them hypocrites. Being called a hypocrite diminishes the credibility and reputation of those who are found to be something less than Godly especially if the have otherwise represented themselves as being close to God. Being found lacking for integrity, people and organizations may be publicly and privately rejected, shamed and chastised — even by people who do not otherwise claim to believe in or follow God or Jesus. From that point forward, they will be treated with suspicion and caution in all kinds of relationships.

When people and organizations are found to behave in ways that are inconsistent with God’s behavior, God’s reputation is adversely affected also. People who observe bad behaviors not only reject the individuals and organizations that did the ungodly thing, they will also tend to reject God. God’s credibility and reputation is therefore effectively diminshed or reduced in the eyes of the world. When unbelievers observe Chistians doing ungoldly things, they may say something like, “If that is what it means to be a Christian, I want no part of religion.” Ungodly behavior makes God less attractive to lost and hurting people who need to be delivered from bondage and injustice. This all detracts from, and does not add to, God’s glory.

While God’s character never changes, his reputation is vulnerable to change depending on how the people who are identified with him behave. When their behaviors are good, God’s reputation for being “holy” is maintained and God is effectively “sanctified” or made “holy” in the eyes of the world. When the behaviors are bad, God becomes less “holy” in the eyes of the world.

When Moses struck the rock the second time, he diminished God’s reputation in the eyes of the people. He was not consistently faithful (obedient) like God is consistently faithful. In God’s eyes, Moses diminished God’s character instead of enhancing it through faithfulness and obedience. Hence, Moses failed to “sanctify” God. Both Moses and God became a little less “holy” or set apart when Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it. As it turned out, God redeemed the situation by bringing forth water for the people anyway, so that the people would continue to see him as a faithful provider. Nevertheless, God still punished Moses for his unfaithfulness and his failure to sanctify God (i.e, make God look good, holy) in the eyes of the people.

The same situation exists in the story of Nadab and Abihu in Leviticus 10:1-7. Here we have two anointed servant priests who brought an unholy fire (i.e. type of worship that God had not commanded them to bring) before God. The exact nature of this unholy fire is unclear, but we know that God rejected it and immediately and publicly punished Nadab and Abihu for practicing a type of worship that displeased God. To justify and explain his quick and harsh response, God said: ‘I will show myself holy among those who are near me, and before all the people I will be glorified.’ This statement is a message to all who claim that they are near (i.e. close to, strongly associated with) God as evidenced by the titles and labels that they use to identify their relationship with God. And the message is this: Make me look good (i.e. holy, set apart, different in a good way) in the eyes of the people or I will punish you.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: For a detailed discussion about the many ways religious people present themselves to the world as godly, visit RELIGIOUS ORNAMENTS AND LABELS. . Next we need to understand how to apply it to our lives. While it is easy to recognize profanity that uses God’s name, it is not so easy to recognize how we misrepresent God. Fortunately, God gives us some clues about how we do, or do not, represent him. Perhaps the best example is found in Moses in Numbers 20:7-12. We see there and in Numbers 27:12-14 and Deuteronomy 32:45-52 (KJV) that Moses, the greatest of the prophets, suffered a serious consequence for his failure to sanctify God at the waters of Meribah . In his failure to speak to the rock, Moses sinned (rebelled) against God. Although, in a previous circumstance God had told Moses to strike the rock, that was not what Moses was to do this time.

His failure was not just a matter of disobedience, however. God said that Moses failed to sanctify him (God) when he (Moses) did not do as God had ordered. The very important lessons to be taken from this situation are these:

Obedience to God’s commands (laws) sanctifies God in the eyes of others. This is good for everyone — including God.

Disobedience to God’s commands profanes God’s reputation. This causes trouble for everyone — including God.

This is a subtle, but very important concept that is at the root of God’s intent in the 3rd Commandment. The logic sequence needed to get to the meaning of the 3rd Commandment goes like this:

Moses was a man of God because God chose him.

People knew Moses to be a man of God because God did miracles through him.

Moses spoke for God to the people.

When the people heard and obeyed what Moses said on God’s behalf, good things happened to the people.

People learned to trust God by trusting that God was speaking through Moses.

As long as Moses obeyed God, he proved to the people that God was trustworthy.

When Moses struck the rock at Mer’ibah of Kadesh, he proved to the people that he was not a perfect man. God did not punish Moses immediately, but his punishments came later when he was denied entrance to the promised land.

With respect to the Third Commandment, here is what we learn from this sequence:

When God is fully trusted by the people who represent him (by carrying his name) to the world, he is perceoved as holy, set apart, and sanctified in the eyes of the world.

When God is not fully trusted by the people who represent him (by carrying his name) to the world, his holiness is diminished in the eyes of the world. He is no longer unique and set apart. He is no longer sanctified.

Deuteronomy 4:5-15 5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land which you are entering to take possession of it.

To apply these principles to your life, simply insert your name into the sequence above. It is good to keep in mind that your ability to obey depends greatly on your knowledge of God’s character and his commandments (i.e. The Law of Moses). In his wisdom, God has given us a picture of himself through Jesus. He did that so that our minds are engaged in the process of being holy and so that we do not make the mistake of thinking our relationship with God is only super-spiritual. If our minds were not to be engaged, there would be no need for the written Bible. God would do all his communicating with us through the air. Thus, there is much to be learned about God by studying Jesus as he is represented in New Covenant scriptures.

To get a complete picture of the nature of both God and Jesus, however, it is absolutely necessary to study First Covenant scriptures. And although it should not be necessary to say, we will say that the more you study the more you will know about God. If you doubt this, check out these scriptures. Keep in mind, however, that mere intellectual knowledge of God is not enough. Obedience is a necessary part of the covenant relationship. So always be mindful to apply what you have learned in your own life.

When you read about Jesus being revealed in the Scriptures, keep in mind that the only scriptures that existed at that time were First Covenant scriptures. Also be mindful that fulfillment of the Scriptures does not only refer to prophetic fulfillment in terms of foretelling the birth of Jesus. It also means that every aspect of The Law of Moses and all of God’s purposes in revealing his character through Jesus and Jesus’ followers must also be fulfilled. That is what Jesus said when he said in Matthew 5:17 that he “came to fulfill the Law.” And if you call yourself a follower of Jesus, you also must say that you have come to fulfill the law.

God’s goodness, glory and name all refer to his unchanging character.

The rock on which Moses must stand is the Messiah.

God’s ways and the tablets of stone are his spiritual laws written on the hearts of New Covenant disciples.

Clouds symbolize people speaking for God

Seeing God’s back symbolizes observation of his works.
