For lack of a Godly view of time in its various labels (e.g. hours, days, weeks, ages, etc.), Jews still believe that the Messiah is yet to come. Christians have a similar problem in their belief that the Messiah came once when Jesus was born but will return again in some future dispensation. Both religions err in applying literal interpretations of time to their understanding of God’s existence and how he works in time and space.

What makes time so difficult to understand is that it is among an almost infinite list of measurable, observable things that God uses in the Bible to represent invisible spiritual truths discussed in the FIRST THE NATURAL, THEN THE SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLE.

Understanding time as God does is difficult for mortal humans because we constantly deal with time in our physical, natural lives. Even though we are told clearly that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day, and that a thousand years are like yesterday in God’s sight, we still have trouble avoiding the tendency to think about time in literal, everyday terms by which we manage our natural lives. If we do not make that adjustment, however, literal interpretations of time will greatly hinder our understanding of spiritual truth. Here are the basic principles we need to apply:

When we interpret scripture literally, we default to looking at time literally in human terms — not spiritual terms as God intends. This is what Old/First Covenant religionists do because this is what their religious laws and their flesh (i.e. mind, reason) tell them to do.

When we interpret scripture symbolically, we look at time the way God does (i.e. spiritually, without reference to anything natural). This is what New Covenant disciples do to understand God’s spiritual laws and the ways he deals with people.

Nowhere is the necessity for accurate interpretation of time more critical than with respect to prophecies which always anticipate future events in terms of hours, days, weeks and the age to come. Many have tried to make sense of these prophecies by setting exact dates for prophetic Biblical events, but they have all failed for lack of understanding of how God uses time to represent spiritual events. They wrongly look for signs of spiritual times in natural phenomena and in terms of chronological time.

STUDY TIP: See Signs, Wonders and Miracles for more about what God says about looking for signs.

Confusion about God’s use of time makes it easy for most people to ignore prophecies about past or future events. In our human way of thinking, either the prophecy has already been fulfilled for others, or is yet to come at a time that we are pretty sure, and hopeful, will not directly affect us anyway. This perspective makes it very easy to minimize the application of any prophecy to our own lives today.

The problem with this perspective is that it ignores what God has said about all scripture being able to lead us to salvation and train us for righteousness. If we trust that this is true, we should want to adjust our understandings of time and prophecy to God’s spiritual understanding so that we can apply references to to our lives today. Lack of willingness to change our lives today means that we are content with our religion. This means that our pride excludes the possibility that there is any reason for us to change in any way. This is not the heart of a disciple who wants to learn so that he/she can be transformed into God’s likeness.

People who do not make this adjustment will remain Old/First Covenant religionists who are created in the likeness of the religious leaders they follow. People who do make this adjustment have learned to interpret the Bible spiritually because they are New Covenant disciples. Religionists will be content with their human understanding of time, but New Covenant disciples who are eager to be trained in righteousness, will want to learn how to interpret references to time spiritually.

IT IS ALL ABOUT TODAY
Beginning with Genesis, where “day” and “days” are mentioned over a hundred times, and ending with Revelation, where day or days are mentioned twenty-one times, and hundreds of times in between. The words “day” and “days” appear in the Bible to either edify us or confuse us.

We are confused (i.e. misled) if we adopt a simple, but wrong, understanding of day and days that conforms to our natural use of the term. Or, we can study to learn the symbolism that God has invested in these terms. Genesis is a good place to begin such study. It is hard to learn from Genesis, however, because the literal understanding of a natural day is culturally ingrained in us. In looking at the Hebrew definition of day, however, we see that it can cover a variety of time periods.

Fundamental religionists, will not easily accept that the Bible is not the story of global events that occurred at unique points of natural time to unique people who lived and died during those times. They need to understand that Genesis is a parable about periods, or seasons of our individual lives, just as the story of Israel is ultimately about our individual lives. The same can be said for the entire Bible. It is not just a book of natural history of Jews and Gentiles. It is a book of spiritual processes laid out in terms of different measures of time (i.e. hours, days, weeks, years, ages, etc.) to aid understanding of spiritual change, of how we come to spiritual maturity.

STUDY TIP: See People and Symbols, Signs, Types, Parables, Copies, and Shadows which teach us how to interpret and apply Bible truths to our personal lives today.

Also see 2 Timothy 3:15-17 which advises us that the lessons of the Bible are for application to good works and deeds today — not in the future.

God’s idea of maturity is not the same as man’s idea. For man, maturity is most commonly imagined in terms of chronological age or education. That is why Judaism has bar mitzvas and bat mitzvas. That is why some Christians have their own coming of age ceremonies such as First Communion and Confirmation. And that is why religious leaders are usually educated and ordained before they become pastors and priests. These are all religious traditions which God hates and have no spiritual value. In fact, Jesus advocates for regressing to childhood — not to getting more education. Remember that he did not begin his history until he was anointed (i.e. baptized) by the spirit of God.

The lesson here is that for God, maturity is all spiritual and not limited to age or time. Maturity is dependent on the ability to hear God’s voice — not on chronological age, book learning or formal education.

God does not intend that we literally interpret measures of time. Measures of time are symbolic of different phases of our religious and spiritual lives — not absolute periods of time. Remember, for God, a day is like a thousand years and is sometimes equated to one year. The purpose of the Bible is to instruct us, teach us, correct us, and train us in righteousness — not to teach us about history or historical events that occurred at certain times. References to time are to various phases of our personal spiritual lives. References to time are not of natural history or of movements and events pertaining to large groups of people (i.e. Israel, Jews) at unique times in recorded history.

While it is true that the Bible is a collection of stories about the way we individually progress toward spiritual maturity, it also demands that we focus on today as we see in the following scriptures:

Psalm 95:6-11 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. These all agree with scriptures that tell us that today is the day of salvation, but disagree with Christian doctrines that anticipate the fulfillment of salvation only after we physically die and go to heaven. That doctrine says, in effect, that those who put their trust in Jesus will have an inner assurance of that future salvation, but cannot fully experience it until they die physically. They call that inner assurance faith, but it is not Godly faith.

STUDY TIP: See Belief, Trust and Faith for understanding of Godly faith.

Despite God’s clear, repeated emphasis on listening to God’s voice today, Christians pay no heed to today, or on listening to God’s voice. They insist on hoping for some good thing to happen to them someday. They do not allow, or expect that God can, or will, deliver on the promise of heaven today.

STUDY TIP: See Heaven and Hell for understanding of what heaven is and when people go there.

God promises benefits for hearing his voice today. Religion promises the future reward of heaven if we practice religion today. Christianity says that if you put your trust in Jesus today, you will go to heaven after you die. This is not what God says.

Because of Christianity’s emphasis on the human Jesus, they make a very big deal about his physical birth, physical death, and return someday. Such focus on past and future events distracts from God’s emphasis on today.

The birth and death of true prophets are not a big deal for God. He is only concerned about their daily lives: Are they listening to his voice today? Are they laying down their lives by speaking for God to people who do not want to hear what they have to say about religion? Are they doing justice?

Christians think that the birth, death, and future return of Jesus is important to God because these events are in the Bible. They do this because they interpret the Bible literally — not symbolically. Thus they faithfully observe Christmas, Easter and communion traditions while failing to listen to God’s voice today.

STUDY TIP: See this link and this link for understanding of how God sees traditions.

Christianity is all about Jesus’ past and future, and says nothing about listening to God’s voice today or any time. Even though scriptures commanding people to listen to God’s voice are distributed throughout the Bible, listening has never been a serious doctrinal issue or practice for Christians. For them, it is enough to pray some, read some, always pay their tithes, and listen to their religious leaders always. The implicit thinking is that if they put their trust in the person Jesus, and their religious leaders and their religious traditions, they will obtain the object of their faith: heaven after they die. This is wrong thinking.

The main reasons Christians think wrongly is that they have adopted the religious doctrine that says Jesus is co-equal with God. Fortified by this stronghold of wrong thinking, do not understand that Jesus is a stumbling block to Godly faith. Being totally unaware of this fact, they have always written and interpreted the Bible in ways that agree with their doctrines. Bible editors, therefore, often made editorial decisions that misrepresent Jesus’ divinity. They did this to make sure their translations appear to confirm the Trinity Doctrine by suggesting that Jesus has always lived alongside God. In other words, they have represented Jesus the man as an eternal being. This is false teaching. Jesus was first a son of man before he became a son of God, and he was always a son of man even after he became a son of God.

STUDY TIP: See this link for understanding of what it means to be both a son of man and son of God.

The truth about Jesus’ divinity exists in plain sight in the Bible. The KJV translates the Greek word “houtos” as “same,” and the NAS, NIV and RSV translate it as “he.”

The KJV is the best translation because it says that the word was in the beginning with God. To say that God and his word always existed is a true statement. To say that “he” (i.e. Jesus) always existed is a false statement. The spirit of Jesus always existed because the spirit of Jesus is God’s spirit that is present in all New Covenant disciples.

The tanslation of houtos as “he” in the NAS, NIV and RSV are incorrect and misleading because they imply that the human person Jesus always lived. Thinking in terms of today is the only way that scripture can train us for righteousness.

Literal interpretations of global events, whether past, present or future, is a big distraction from today.
