It should not be necessary to say, but it is a fact that religion would not exist except for obedience to doctrines of tithing.

As is true for most major religious doctrines, there is much disagreement about tithing. An internet search for tithe, tithes and tithing will yield hundreds of sites where analysis of the pros and cons of tithing can be found. That there is such disagreement is a clue that none of the commentators/theologians, whether Jews or Christians, understand the spiritual meaning of tithing. This is the predictable result when people try to apply literal interpretations to the study of spiritual matters.

STUDY TIP: See Place Where God Will Place His Name for the spiritual understanding of the place to which tithes are to be brought.

Also see Religion is Commerce, Examples of Business and Commerce in Religion, Jesus and the Money-Changers in the Temple, and What Jesus Said About Money.

We do not doubt the sincerity of religious leaders who have done their best to make sense of the Biblical commands about tithing. No doubt they want to be “Biblical” in practicing their faith and try hard to make practical sense of confusing scriptures about the various kinds of tithes and when they should be given. But more than that, they have real self interest in tithes and offerings: If financial support does not come in, they are out of a job. God says such people are greedy for unjust gain. They preach about tithing and shamelessly ask for offerings, but they never remind people that God’s word is a free gift. When they ask to receive offerings that support their position that enables them to teach God’s word, they violate Jesus’ command about freely giving.

Failure of religious leaders to reconcile all scriptures on tithes and offerings into a comprehensive set of Biblical doctrines is what happens when anyone tries to interpret scripture from an Old/First Covenant perspective that is based on literal interpretations of scripture. Lacking a New Covenant perspective that gets to the symbolic meaning of the literal commandments, they will necessarily stumble and fail in their attempts to pull it all together in a way that makes sense and is defensible with respect to Old/First Covenant interpretations of the literal Bible.

STUDY TIPS: We have discussed the issue of literal and symbolic Biblical interpretations in Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 1, Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 2, and Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 3.

The tithing controversy is complicated by the fact that tithing was a common practice in ancient cultures. This Wikipedia article provides an historical overview of tithing in many different cultures and in many different eras. Tithing practices by other cultures are important to know because God has clearly said that his people should not follow the customs of other nations. Therefore, Jews and Christians who tithe according to their understanding of some scriptures make the mistake of violating other scriptures. It would not be like God to set them up for such a dilemma.

The following are quotes from Christian resources about the history of tithing. We do not vouch for the veracity of any of these resources. We include them here only to establish further historical evidence that material tithing was a common practice in ancient cultures.

Christianity Today
While the New Testament contains no explicit command to tithe, many have argued that this relationship between the Levites and the other tribes of Israel prefigures how Christians should provide for their ministers. This view of tithing, known as parallelism, gained prominence in the church around the sixth century.

Many non-Jewish and pre-Christian societies also practiced tithe-like giving. Some ancient sources describe how kings imposed a type of first-fruits tax to maintain holy shrines and support clergy. From Nebuchadnezzar’s Babylonia to the temples of Apollo in Delphi and Athena in Athens, pre-Christian centers of worship collected tithes for their gods. Ancient cultures as disparate as the Greeks and Chinese—including the Arabians, Phoenicians, Romans, and Carthaginians—gave in ways mirroring the tithe. Some scholars believe ancient cultures hit on the seemingly arbitrary figure of one-tenth because they often did calculations on their fingers.

SUNScholar
This dissertation addresses the topic, “Theological perspectives on Tithing in the Old Testament and their implications for believing communities in Africa.” … Opponents query the biblical basis, point to abuses such as the lifestyles of pastors, and allege the commercialization of the gospel. Dispensationalists query the case for tithing in the New Testament, and the degree of reliance on the Old Testament where the situation might be different from ours. … So the research seeks to answer the questions about the theological basis for the adoption of the tithe system as a means of mobilizing local resources in support of the Church’s programmes, among others. … In order to achieve this, chapter two presented a survey of tithing in the Ancient Near East and Old Testament. It was shown that the concept of tithing was not peculiar to Ancient Israel; it was also found in other Ancient Eastern cultures like Ancient Egypt, Old and New Babylonia, Assyria, and Ugarit. Whereas the tithe system in the Old Testament was always theologically motivated, it was not always the case in other examples from the Ancient Near East.

tektonics.org
Within the context of the OT references to the tithe are made to refer to that which was given as support to a certain person (like Melchizedek) or an institution (the priesthood). But there is a point of background interest here. Clearly Abraham and Jacob practiced a tithe before the time of the law. There is good reason for this: Tithing was a widespread custom in the Ancient Near East, and it was commonly practiced for the support of kings and sanctuaries…. Sarna (Genesis commentary, 110) offers an example of pagan “tithing” in the Ugaritic (Canaanite) literature; the tithe was paid to a local king. Salstrand [The Tithe, 15] mentions secular examples of the “ten percent rule” in Egypt, Babylon, Assyria, Greece, and Rome. We even see an example of a “secular” tithe in the OT: 1 Sam. 8:15-17. A very important initial point may be derived from this. The “ten percent” rule was a construct of the Ancient Near East even before the law was introduced.

Sanderson Beck
The state got revenue from taxes, and the temples received tithes, which averaged about ten percent of income. The Eanna temple of Uruk owned more than 5,000 cattle and over a 100,000 sheep. Those who could not pay the tithe might borrow it or even give their children to the temple as slaves. Scribes served not only government administration but as business accountants as well. In 553 BC Nabonidus appointed a royal commissioner in the Eanna temple to make sure that the state got its taxes from the temple. Temples also had to provide services to the palace, and the king began to regulate temple rations to slaves, salaries, and rental rates. Such policies may have induced the priests to prefer Cyrus to their own king

ministrymagazine.org
Although theologians disagree about the origin, purpose, and principle of tithing, they all agree on one point: It is of great antiquity. The Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, and Sumerians paid a tenth of their incomes to their gods as a fixed rule centuries before God through the prophet Malachi accused the Hebrews of robbing God when they withheld their tithes. In fact, one of the largest buildings in Babylon was the storehouse for the tithes used in heathen worship. Aristotle, Xenophon, Herodotus, Pliny, and Cicero all mention the payment of the tithe as a very old custom amounting to a law in their day among their people.

This may have led critics to suggest that the Jews borrowed this custom from heathen nations. Wouldn’t it be more logical to conclude that these people borrowed their practice from some ancient directive dating back to the Fall of Adam and Eve? The payment of the tithe did not originate with the Hebrews, but seems to be a common expression of the recognition of God’s sovereignty.

The Bible is strangely economical on the subject. Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance lists only 39 references to tithing. It seems strange that such a basic principle of Christian belief would enjoy such limited reference unless, of course, it was so generally recognized and self-evident that it required only incidental mention. This could be one of its strongest evidences of validity.

To further support the fact that tithing was a common religious practice in antiquity, we offer links to the following scholarly writings about the practices of ancient religions before, during and after the giving of the law of Moses in which the details of Biblical tithing are mentioned.

The Ancient Rise and Recent Fall of Tithing

Ideology and Belief in Ancient Egypt

Daily Offering Ritual in ancient Egyptian temples

Greek Gods and Religious Practices

Canaanite gods and goddesses

Ancient Greek Religion

Religion in Ancient Rome

Method of Sacrifice in Ancient Greece

The important fact to be learned from the history of tithing is that the practice did not originate with the giving of the Law of Moses. This is important because it establishes the historical context in which God uses tithes and offerings of agricultural produce (e.g. grain, wine, oil, animals, etc.) that can be seen, handled and traded to communicate his expectations about spiritual tithes and offerings that are invisible and untouchable.

The history of tithes and offerings by other religions is especially important when we consider God’s commandments that Israel should not follow the customs of other religious nations. With these commandments in mind, we must conclude that it was never God’s intention that his people, past and present, should give physical tithes and offerings of any kind. He only uses these religious practices to symbolically represent spiritual tithes and offerings that he really wants. This representation is a good example of the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle found throughout the Bible.

So we know what the natural tithes and offerings are, but this does not explain what spiritual tithes are. For that understanding, we must listen to God’s voice.

OTHER NAMES FOR TITHES
Religionists usually overlook the fact that the first Biblical reference to giving something to God appears in Genesis 14:1-7 where the items given are called offerings, not tithes, but they convey the the idea of paying/giving something to God.

When we investigate tithes and offerings further, we find that the distinctions between tithes and offerings are blurred to the point of confusion about what a tithe is, who receives it, and what is done with it after it is received. Consider the following ambiguous scripture as an example:

<a These verses are among the scriptures that are often quoted by religious leaders who are trying to motivate their followers to pay some kind of tithe or offering to support their ministries. The inference is that if God gave to Aaron the responsibility (i.e. charge) for his (i.e. God’s) offerings, then all priests (i.e. sons of Aaron) have perpetual authority to receive and spend tithes and offerings that people give to God. This argument is very believable for people who believe that tithes and offerings are money. They can’t give money directly to God so this scripture seems to say that God wants the money to go directly to his priests.

It is also instructive to notice that the Hebrew word “Mishchah” which is translated as ” portion” in the NASB, and as “anointing” in KJV, is actually an anointing oil. Since oil is always used to symbolically represent God’s spoken word, offerings and holy gifts must be interpreted as God’s spoken word — not as money.

STUDY TIP: See this link for the story of Simon who tried to obtain a spiritual gift by purchasing it with money.

One surprising aspect of this scripture is that God is the one giving the holy gifts to Aaron, the high priest. From that point on, Aaron has charge of the offerings/tithes. This exchange is confusing because we typically think of people giving offerings and tithes to God. It makes sense, however, when we acknowledge that God gives spiritual gifts/rewards. His rewards are all spiritual. Contrary to popular religious teaching, God does not reward people who follow him with money or any other material thing.

Here we see that God gives Aaron “charge” of (i.e. God’s offerings). The Bible says “my offerings” even though the original Hebrew does not include the word “my.” When authors of the Bible included the word “my” in the text, they did so because this interpretation affirms the belief that priests (i.e. clergy) had charge of God’s offerings (i.e. his money).

Since offerings have always been interpreted to be tangible things like money, having “charge” of God’s money legitimizes the role and authority of the priests, while affirming the belief that the money really belonged to God. When coupled with the wrong interpretation that the religious organization (e.g. church, synagogue, mission, etc.) is the storehouse to which tithes of money are to be brought, this interpretation elevates priests to the status of God’s bankers, or managers of his money, and appears to affirm that God wants his people to bring their tithes of money to the priests who will be sure to spend God’s money wisely. This is all wrong thinking, of course, because it only makes sense in the physical realm that includes money. It does not make sense in the spirit realm. God does not need money to do the work of changing hearts.

If tithes were money, and if God’s gifts were money, we could easily understand why God would give tithes of money to priests. We can visualize eating wine, fruit, grain and oil, because these are natural products associated with food. But we are greatly challenged to visualize eating invisible, intangible, spiritual things like sin and guilt. We might also rightly wonder how these things can be called holy. It all adds to the confusion about the nature of tithes and offerings that can only be understood after we first understand Bread, Food and Wine as spiritual gifts.

Despite the mystery of tithes and offerings, religious leaders have glossed over all of the confusing scriptures and effectively and selectively used other scriptures to convince and deceive followers into believing that it is reasonable to convert grain and animal offerings to money. They imply that the gift/offering/tithe is for God, but the truth is that money is needed to support religious organizations and pay their salaries. They conveniently skip over the sin and guilt offerings because neither they nor their followers understand Biblical symbolism. If they did understand and apply symbolism, the entire religious system would fall apart for lack of financial support. And that is exactly what God had in mind when he gave us the story of Jesus and the money-changers.

15 “Every first issue of the womb of all flesh, whether man or animal, which they offer to the LORD, shall be yours; nevertheless the firstborn of man you shall surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem.

COMMENTARY: The mystery deepens here where we see that God gives the firstborn of both men and unclean animals to the high priest. Using our natural minds, we might assume that God gives these for Aaron’s personal use. That is wrong thinking. The explanation comes in the command to redeem that which God has given. But, the command that these should be redeemed strongly suggests that they are not to be kept and eaten by the high priest. Needless to say, this scripture is hard to understand and impossible to obey when interpreted literally. Understanding comes, however, when we look at the many ways that God symbolically represents his spoken word.

16 “As to their redemption price, from a month old you shall redeem them, by your valuation, five shekels in silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs. 17 “But the firstborn of an ox or the firstborn of a sheep or the firstborn of a goat, you shall not redeem; they are holy. Understanding of the symbolic meaning of tithes only happens for when God opens the eyes and ears of the heart to understanding. Lacking such understanding, religious people always believe that money satisfies the literal interpretations of literal Biblical commands about tithes. Because their hearts are hard, they do not have ears to hear God’s spoken voice. Moreover, if it is intellectually impossible to understand those commands, it is also impossible to obey them according to the full letter of the law. This is a prime example of the law being a stumbling block.

For Jews and Christians, however, lack of clear understanding is not an obstacle to creation of doctrines that religious leaders offer as suitable, acceptable substitutes for obedience. Instead of seeking spiritual understanding, they cherry-pick the scriptures that seem doable and tweak them a bit to make them fit with contemporary culture and economics. Then they package their ideas in clever language that seems to reasonably satisfy what the Bible says. And they do this by using deceptive, intellectual reasoning that convinces religious people that all of God’s commands regarding tithes and offerings are satisfied by giving money to religious organizations, religious leaders, and/or poor people. They add and subtract from the law as necessary to create doctrines that trick religious followers into believing that paying for religious teaching and religious services is the righteous thing to do. The Bible uses many unflattering words to describe religious leaders who use scripture to extort money from people for personal gain.

And if that is not bad enough, religious followers willingly participate in this system of commercial religion. Doing so is another religious thing that they can do that makes them feel good about being religious. They are so convinced that this system is what God wants that they willingly pay for something that should be free: God’s voice.

COMMON RELIGIOUS PRACTICES
The fact that tithing was common in other cultures and religions before and during the time when the Mosaic Law about tithing was given poses a problem for anyone who desires to be Biblical in their religious practices. On the one hand we have God’s many commands to tithe, and on the other hand we have his warnings that Israel should not follow the abominable practices of those other religions.

How to reconcile these commands is the problem. Even though it appears from the literal reading of the Bible that God commanded Israel to tithe, he could not have intended for them to tithe material things (e.g crops, money, etc.) in the same way that other religions tithed such commodities. If that is what he meant, he would have contradicted what he said about not following the customs of other religions. In analyzing the problem we must first acknowledge that God was not inconsistent in his commands, nor did he later change his mind because God does not change his mind. In other words, there must be another way to understand God’s many commands regarding tithing.

The only way to reconcile this puzzle is to accept that God used the literal language regarding tithing to represent a spiritual truth. It is another example of the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle that we find throughout the Bible. Thus we conclude that God did not really want Israel, or Christians, to give material tithes. What he wants is that they give spiritual tithes.

The nature of those spiritual tithes, however, is difficult to discern. But, as he always does, God gives us clues elsewhere in the Bible to help us discover what he means by tithes.

Hint: It is all about God’s voice and hearts.

REINTERPRETING TITHES AND OFFERINGS SCRIPTURES
Many Christians like to think that they are being Biblical by paying regular paying tithes of their income to God. If they receive a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly paycheck they will take ten percent (more or less) of it and give it to the religious organization of their choice and perhaps some ministries they find worthy. This practice is encouraged by religious organizations who benefit from regular income. And it is an easy sell to people who want to feel righteous about their obedience to what they interpret as God’s laws about tithing.

It is instructive to consider how the typical practice of paying tithes contrasts with what the Bible actually says. When we bother to look at scripture, we see that the Bible does not instruct paying of tithes in cash on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or annual basis. Scriptures do command three kinds of tithes (e.g. first, second, poor), but these tithes is given at different frequencies (annually, first, second, fourth and fifth years, three years).

Scriptures about the form and frequency of tithing are never quoted in teachings about tithing. Religious organizations make it a point to encourage obedience to Biblical commands, but do not pursue Biblical correctness when it is impossible to obey the literal commands. Religious organizations that require a regular, reliable inflow of money to keep the lights on and pay salaries find it convenient to overlook these scriptures.

Religious teachings about tithing also skirt Biblical correctness regarding the form of tithes. When we bother to look, we see that Bible references to tithes are of agricultural produce such as grain, wine, oil and animals. In contrast to common practice, the Bible contains no commandments to tithe cash/money. It is relatively easy for people who live in agricultural economies to apply the Biblical prescriptions for agricultural tithes because they deal with agricultural produce every day. But is harder for people who are not farmers and do not have grain or other kinds of harvests that they can tithe.

Using worldly logic, non-farmers have adjusted the literal Biblical prescriptions regarding tithes to mean money instead of crops and animals. But people who are farmers have also adopted money as the medium for tithing. These practices are logical for religious people, but they not come close to what God really has in mind for tithes. Religious people do their best to be Biblical, but they fall way short on the details.

STUDY TIP: See Jesus and the Money Changers in the Temple for the history of bringing cash money to religious buildings.

We might criticize religious people for failing to obey the literal commands regarding tithing found in the Bible. But, God is not disappointed because he never intended that his people would obey the literal commands in the Bible. He is disappointed, however, that people do not obey the spiritual meanings behind the literal commands.

The purpose of the written laws about tithing was to teach people how to discern good from evil — not to be obeyed. God knows that it is physically impossible to obey the literal, written commandments of the Bible. People, however, can’t admit that obedience to the literal law is impossible. So they do their best to obey in ways that seem reasonable and call whatever they do righteous.

People make an effort to obey the literal commands because they do not understand the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle. And so they work hard at obeying religious laws based on literal laws they read in the Bible, and miss God’s spiritual laws which are the ones that God really wants them to obey. This is what disappoints God.

God says that it is impossible to please him without faith. He also said that faith is the substance of things not seen. These two facts must be considered and reconciled in the matter of tithes where it must be said that money cannot be the substance of tithes. Money can be seen and touched. This fact contrasts with faith cannot be seen. Money and faith do not mix and are not interchangeable because money is natural and faith is spiritual. Tithes of money satisfy man’s religious laws/teachings about tithes but do not satisfy the spiritual meaning of tithes.

Scriptures discussed below show that what God values, recognizes and wants must be expressions of faith which cannot be seen. Accordingly, tithes that God values and wants cannot be expressions of anything like money which can be seen. Tangible, material tithes are totally abhorrent to God. It would totally inconsistent for God to put the highest value on faith that cannot be seen and then demand material tithes which can be seen.

This interpretation clashes with religious teachings about tithes and faith. Religion teaches that people who give money to religious organizations show that they have faith that God provides the money they give. They also teach that the more money people give, the more God will provide. This teaching is deceptive manipulation of scripture with the purpose of using it to acquire money for personal gain. This teaching perverts what God says about faith being unseen by converting spiritual tithes to material money. Furthermore, the practice of giving money in full view of others violates what Jesus said about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.

By substituting natural money for spiritual tithes, religious people have effectively added to and subtracted from scripture. They have added money as a substitute for crops, and have subtracted by ignoring the symbolic, spiritual meaning of tithes.

Coming to an understanding of what God means by tithes is difficult if we use only our intellect for understanding. When we listen to God’s voice, however, the spiritual meaning of tithes and offerings come into view. We begin, as usual, by looking at what the Bible says about tithes where we see that conventional, religious interpretations of tithes miss the mark of what God means by tithes:

In some scriptures, tithes of agricultural produce (e.g. grain, fruit, new wine, olive oil etc) are brought into a storehouse/storeroom.

Understanding of this scripture is possible only when we understand the symbolism of agricultural produce and storehouses/storerooms.

STUDY TIP: See Bread, Food and Wine for an overview of the symbolism of agricultural produce.

Religious people who do not live in agricultural economies and try to obey the literal meaning of scriptures about tithing agricultural produce will be totally frustrated in their attempts at Biblical correctness. That is why money has been accepted as a convenient substitute for agricultural produce in most religions. Furthermore, money suits the personal, greedy interests of religious leaders more than tithes of agricultural produce. Instead of trying to understand the symbolism, religion has altered the Bible for convenience and self-interest. Religion claims to be faithful to the Bible but is not.

Understanding of the spiritual nature of tithes only make senses when we understand that storerooms and storehouses are symbolic representations of clean, pure hearts where God’s treasures (i.e. his laws, his character) are housed. Storehouses are not churches or synagogues or ministries as religions teach. Saying that religious organizations are storehouses and storerooms is a convenient way of deceiving religious people with money to give that money to religious leaders.

God’s command to bring tithes into the storehouses are essentially God’s way of restating his commands to seek him with all you heart, to listen to his voice and to take his words into the heart. Seeking God yields the reward of knowing him in your heart. When you have heard his voice you have brought the tithe into the storehouse.

Knowing God in the heart is a spiritual treasure unlike any material treasure. Anyone who takes a moment to think about it would be forced to conclude that it is a silly notion to suggest that something physical can represent something spiritual. How can you give physical form to something that you cannot see? Since the place where God chooses to place his name is the heart of New Covenant disciples, clean, pure hearts — not physical buildings and not people — are the places to which tithes are to be brought. Anyone who stops to think about it will quickly conclude that tithes of natural money cannot be brought into the heart. They will also conclude that religious leaders who teach that bringing money into physical buildings are false prophets who deceive religious people about such matters do so for selfish reasons.

Religious leaders support their teaching about tithes with literal interpretations of bringing tithes into physical storehouses which they argue is the church. Their efforts to be Biblical break down, however, with respect to God’s command that tithes are to be eaten in the place where he places his name. So they say, bring your tithe of money to church, but they never say eat your tithe when you get here. They teach obedience to some parts of scripture but are silent about other scriptures that do not support their selfish motives. If religious people really wanted to be obedient to what the Bible says, they would eat their tithes, but people do not eat money. Bringing money to a building and giving it to a religious leader instead of eating it does not satisfy God’s commands about what to do with tithes. This inconsistency does not bother those who tithe any more than it bothers those who teach tithing. It is a broken system that exists because beliefs about tithes are part of stronghold of wrong thinking. There is nothing more important to God than his spoken word. In fact, God’s essence, his presence, his power and his glory exists in his spoken word. God and his spoken word are inseparable.

References to robbing God, therefore, are to his spoken word — not to money. But this knowledge does not explain how we can rob God of his spoken word. Here is the explanation:

We begin by acknowledging God’s commands to bring the tithe (i.e. his spoken word) into the storehouse (i.e.heart). This is first a command for us to receive God’s spoken word in our own hearts. It is also a command to speak God’s word into the hearts of others. If we obey the first command, we will obey the second command. Jesus restated these commands as “go make disciples and baptize them.”

We rob God through three kinds of inaction:

If we do not study to know him, we rob him of a home in our hearts.

If we claim to hear God’s voice but do not speak for God as true prophets, angels, messiahs, high priests, witnesses, and warriors, we are robbing him of opportunities for his word to be shared with others.

When we do not speak for God we also rob others from hearing God’s voice. And if they do not hear his voice they do not provide a home in their hearts for God. This robs God from opportunities to expand his kingdom to more clean, pure hearts.

Malachi 3:10 says that he will pour out blessings if the whole tithe is brought into the storehouse.

Because religious people always think in material terms, they think of tithes as material tithes (i.e. money) and of blessings in material terms (i.e. money). This thinking is reinforced by wrong interpretations of other verses that wrongly interpret money as seed and promise thirty, sixty and hundredfold increases of money to people who sow money into religious activity. This is a very enticing argument for people who are inclined to give monetary tithes.

The thinking about blessings looks like this: The more money they sow into religious enterprises (e.g. church, synagogues, ministries, missions, etc.), the more money they will get back somehow as a blessing from God. People who think this way satisfy the command to tithe with money and get a return on their investment to the degree that God will bless them with more money in the future. In effect, these people try to manipulate God by excess tithing so they can have more money. The only people who benefit from this attitude are religious leaders.

STUDY TIP: See this link for the correct understanding of blessings.

***The heart is the place where we hear God’s spoken voice.

Bringing our tithe to God is the same thing as bringing our hearts to God. This is especially true if we happen to be hard of hearing. We want to get close to the one who is speaking. When we bring anything less than our whole heart to God, we are not fully tuned in to hearing his voice. We bring only a partial tithe. That means that the religious practice of giving money or goods or even physical labor is not what God wants. Any tithe that can be observed is a product of fake faith.

The idea that a tithe is a tenth of something is an irrelevant religious relic going back to pagan religions. It is impossible to divide and separate out a portion (i.e. tenth) of spiritual things. The idea of taking out a tenth can only be applied to something material such as money. It does not apply to spiritual tithes (i.e. God’s spoken word and clean, pure hearts) which cannot be divided.

The only things that God recognizes as being truly spiritual and holy are his words and clean, pure hearts (i.e.storehouses) where his words are deposited.
