Thus Christians have found creative ways to justify their practices regarding tithes in the face of many scriptures that clearly reveal God’s opinions about physical/material offerings.

STUDY TIP: See Tithes for an extensive discussion of this topic. We conclude, therefore, that Abel had a clean pure heart, and that Cain had an evil, impure heart. And we also conclude that Abel’s offering was totally spiritual while Cain’s offering was fleshly and material. Abel’s offering was a matter of faith which cannot be seen, while Cain’s offering was religious which could be seen.

The mistake of thinking that God really wants material tithes and offerings, despite what he has said, is based to a great degree on the assumption that, since there is no temple anymore, and since animal sacrifices are not considered to be appropriate in most civilized cultures, believers should bring their modern-day substitute (i.e. money) for Biblical sacrifices, tithes and offerings to a church, synagogue, or some worthwhile religious organization or ministry that fulfills the duties of priests who would minister in the temple if it was still standing. This interpretation has been in place at least since the fall of the Second Temple which correlates with the emergence of the church. Jews, for the most part, no longer hold to the practice of animal sacrifices, but Orthodox Jews have only suspended this practice until the Temple in Jerusalem is rebuilt. In the meantime, many Jews give their tithes to the poor through charity, and Christians are divided on whether giving to the church equates with giving to the poor.

Substitution of money or some kind of physical property for sacrifices, tithes and offerings has been practiced and accepted for hundreds of generations. Over time the concept of giving something material to God through various ministries has been adapted to changing cultures and religions, but in all religions there is a remnant of sacrifices, tithes and offerings present in a general term often called free-will offerings that, for many, are believed to satisfy all Biblical requirements. But some more fundamental religious strains still try to hold to the literal, one-tenth idea of tithing.

Despite the historical practice of tithing and apparent Biblical legitimacy of material offerings, whether cash or grain or animals, it must be said that no kind of physical offering will satisfy God. He has said as much in this scripture:

Psalm 51:16-17: For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

If that is not enough to convince us that God does not want material sacrifices/offerings/tithes, we can firmly establish that material sacrifices, tithes and offerings are not acceptable to God because he clearly told Israel that it should not follow the customs of other nations (i.e. religions). Because ancient Israelites knew this to be true by observing the religious practices of other nations, they should have known enough not to practice tithing like their religious neighbors. And because we, in these modern times, also know from studies of ancient religions that tithing and offerings were important elements of those religions, we also should know enough not to practice tithing and making of offerings because we would violate God’s commands not to follow the customs of other religions.

Thus it must be said that any religion (including Judaism and Christianity) that practices a custom/tradition that includes payment or gifting of anything material (e.g. money, land, grain, personal property, etc.) to a religious person or organization has violated a clear commandment: Do not follow the religious customs of other past or present religions (i.e. nations).

With this commandment clearly in mind, we will show in these pages that the common interpretation of sacrifices, tithes and offerings as money/property is a wrong interpretation. We will show that throughout the Bible God used a natural, known religious practices to represent a unknown spiritual truths. We will also prove through scripture that the sacrifices, tithes and offerings that God wants are spiritual (i.e. they exist only in the heart of a New Covenant disciple). These arguments all bear witness to the fact that spiritual sacrifices, tithes and offerings are never physical and they never are brought to God through any kind of physical activity.

Proving that physical offerings of any kind are not what God wants is relatively easy in terms of tracking the symbolism in the Bible. The really hard task is overcoming the toxic influence of four thousand years of tradition and the stronghold of thinking and practice in both Judaism and Christianity that legitimizes material offerings of any kind.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: For more about overcoming strongholds of thinking, see Religion is Injustice, Slavery, Oppression and Affliction.

Since physical/material sacrifices and offerings are closely related to physical buildings and institutions, it is also necessary to understand God’s views of these topics. Because of the frequency of use of these terms, we can assume that they are very important concepts to God.

Once we become familiar with how these terms are used in the Bible, we next explore other scriptures that must be considered alongside the terms sacrifice and offering to gain a clear understanding of the symbolism of the terms.

SYMBOLISM OF SACRIFICES, TITHES AND OFFERINGS
God has an ongoing challenge in his desire to communicate spiritual concepts to people with human words. Words always have cultural meanings and associations that control how people interpret them. The problem has always been and will always be that using words written by and spoken by men to communicate spiritual concepts always includes risk that they will be interpreted according to those cultural meanings and associations. Man, being physical and culturally accustomed to thinking in natural terms, does not readily or easily accept or understand spiritual concepts. And when he misinterprets what God is trying to say through Symbols, Signs, Types, Copies, Shadows and Patterns, he is on his way to creating religion.

This very human condition always interferes man’s ability to understand what God has spoken to his prophets so they can be reported widely to his people. We only need to look at the glut of religions and Bible versions in the world today to see that man has always had different ways of interpreting what God said. And yet, each one who writes and interprets sincerely believes that he/she has the right interpretation. Since they do not agree on even some of the basic doctrines about God, they cannot all be right. The only possibility that remains, therefore, is that they are all wrong. God confirmed this fact for us when he said that all scribes who are wise in their own eyes and have established good reputations because of their Biblical knowledge and wisdom actually translate God’s word into lies and deceptions.

God has a three-step solution to solve this problem:

First, he uses natural things and activities that man can understand to symbolically represent spiritual concepts that he does not understand. Therefore, we recommend that readers first study the following pages:

Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 1

Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 2

Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 3

Mystery

Symbols, Signs, Types, Copies, Shadows and Patterns

Having read about symbolism, parables and mystery, we are now better prepared to grasp how God can make seemingly contradictory statements such as found in Deuteronomy 12:1-11 where God says to bring offerings and in Psalm 40:6 where it says that God does not desire or require sacrifices and offerings. With full awareness that God does not change his mind, we must humbly conclude that the problem is our lack of understanding of the symbolic nature of physical sacrifices and offerings and not a matter of contradictory scriptures. These contradictions exist because man, who insists on interpreting scripture literally, is not inherently equipped to listen to God’s voice. Man therefore stumbles over literal scripture and creates religion out of what he reads and understands with his intellectual mind.

OVERCOMING THE STUMBLING BLOCK
Although man is destined to use his natural wisdom and intellect
God’s solution to helping us understand spiritual matters is to first speak in natural terms that we do understand. This presents a challenge to those who want to understand God just like it is a challenge to God who chooses to use fallible humans to interpret and report what he says. This challenge is amplified greatly when he uses the terms and practices of natural religion, which he does not accept, to represent spiritual worship which he does accept. We find this principle most clearly in the Law of Moses and its many commandments regarding sacrifices, tithes and offerings.

God’s solution was borrow terms and practices common to religions of the day to represent spiritual concepts. These terms and practices were very familiar to Israel at the time because it had just left Egypt where it observed and even practiced Egyptian religion that employed physical sacrifices, tithes and offerings . So the Israelites knew immediately what God meant by these natural terms. These terms are not so familiar to most of us in these modern days, however, so it is useful to conduct a short review by looking at Origins of Judaism and Christianity and the following links:

The Ancient Rise and Recent Fall of Tithing

Ideology and Belief in Ancient Egypt

Daily Offering Ritual in ancient Egyptian temples

Greek Gods and Religious Practices

Ancient Canaanite Religion

Ancient Greek Religion

Religion in Ancient Rome

Method of Sacrifice in Ancient Greece

To help Israel avoid the mistake of thinking that God actually wanted it to interpret what he said about sacrifices, tithes and offerings literally, he also made it very clear that he did not want his people to follow the religious customs of any religious nation. That was a warning and a clue that Israel should not introduce physical sacrifices, tithes and offerings in its worship of God. This same warning extends to all succeeding generations of those who claim to fear God, and says that they/we should not employ physical sacrifices, tithes and offerings in our worship and that we should not worship using our physical bodies. What God wants instead is spiritual worship.

God made it clear to Moses that he was to make everything according to the heavenly (i.e. spiritual) pattern, which God showed to Moses while he was on Mt. Sinai (i.e. the mountain of God where he writes the spiritual law on the hearts of men).

STUDY TIP: We have discussed this heavenly pattern in EARTHLY PATTERNS AND HEAVENLY PATTERNS

Moses heard the voice of God in spiritual words, but then he had to communicate them in human words to Israel and to us. God would have preferred to speak directly to the people of Israel with spiritual words, but they remained at a distance from God preferring to hear whatever God had to say to them through a human mediator (i.e. Moses). That was a big mistake for Israel, and it is still a big mistake for modern day Jews and Christians who prefer to listen to a Moses-like mediator (e.g. rabbi, pastor, etc.) rather than listen to God directly.

If Israel had chosen to listen to God’s voice, it would have understood that when God said to bring natural (i.e. animals, blood, drink grain, etc.) offerings, he was symbolically using these natural items to refer to spiritual offerings of a man’s heart. Since Israel chose to have Moses mediate between them and God, however, all they heard was to bring the natural offerings. Thus was born the practice of material tithes and offerings in Judaism and Christianity because they only understand the natural words of the Bible.

If Israel and Christians had listened to God’s voice, they would have understood the symbolic meaning of sacrifices and offerings in these scriptures:

Psalms 51:14-17: Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of thy deliverance. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. 16 For thou hast no delight in sacrifice; were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased. 17 The sacrifices acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart O God, thou wilt not despise.

COMMENTARY: This is one of the best scriptures in the entire Bible for understanding what God means by sacrifice, and it could not be more clear. It says that the only sacrifices acceptable to God are a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart. This is an example of scripture that must be taken literally because it provides understanding of the other scriptures that speak in symbolic terms.

Although the scripture mentions burnt offerings in particular, it is accurate to conclude that God’s rejection of burnt offerings can be extended to all kinds of physical offerings because verse 17 says that the sacrifices acceptable to God are a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart. In other words, there are no other kinds of sacrifices, including any physical sacrifice (e.g. blood, money, grain, body, etc.) that is acceptable to God.

The first thing we recognize is that these kinds of sacrifices that are acceptable to God cannot be seen or touched or manipulated like must be done with burnt offerings and other kinds of physical sacrifices. Acceptable sacrifices and offerings have no physical presence or outward appearance. This includes money and going to church or synagogue, or baptism or circumcision which can all be seen. This is to be expected because we know that God does not look at appearances but looks at the heart. Since all Old/First Covenant religions, including Judaism and Christianity, are nothing more than a collection of traditions that are always conducted in view of other religionists, they are in the category of sacrifices and offerings that are unacceptable to God. Religious traditions are acceptable to the religionists who practice them, but not to God who looks at the heart which no one else can see.

The list of unacceptable sacrifices also includes any king of religious activity that is conducted using the physical body or religious objects or locations. Again, any religious activity that can be seen or directed by religious custom it is unacceptable — no matter what religious leaders might say and no matter how long it has been in practice as a religious custom. This is the essence of the Third Commandment and the Fourth Commandment.

God wants his people to rest, or cease, all religious activity which is commonly considered to be a kind of sacrifice or offering to God. And he wants that they should be free from bondage to religious laws and traditions. This includes singing, praying, worship, raising hands, kneeling, bowing, service to others, making pilgrimages, fasting, baptism, circumcision and so on. These are all religious traditions that have the appearance of righteousness but lack spiritual power. These are all Defiled Religion because they are unacceptable to God.

But knowing what is unacceptable to God is only part of the challenge. We must also understand the nature of a broken spirit and contrite heart.

Most people will have a hard time knowing if they have a broken spirit or a contrite heart because they are spiritual qualities that cannot be observed with natural eyes or ears. It does mean, however, to sacrifice (e.g. put to death, end, terminate, finish, etc.) all religious work that we do with our physical bodies.

What we die to must include anything and everything associated with religion that can be accomplished or observed with natural, human senses. This includes religious activities done corporately and privately. Dying especially means ending our relationship with spiritual leaders (i.e. false prophets) from whom we have sought to learn about God instead of listening to God’s voice for ourselves.

Ending our physical worship and worship of other gods (i.e. false prophets) is considered by God to be an act of sacrificial worship. And it is a serious sacrifice because religion is an important part of the life of all religious people. All Old Testament scriptures that include any kind of blood offering symbolically anticipate the sacrificial end of religion for individuals. Essentially we put to death our religious life (i.e. we die a spiritual death) and are resurrected with a new spiritual life in which we hear God’s voice. We make the transition from Old/First Covenant religion to New Covenant disciples.

Ephesians 4:17-24: 17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord , that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

COMMENTARY: Old/First Covenant religionists are equated with Gentiles because all gentile nations practice religion. The statements to be considered are not always easy to identify, so special care must be taken when reading to identify them.

Psalms 40:6-8 Sacrifice and offering thou dost not desire; but thou hast given me an open ear. And it is just as clear that obedience to God’s spiritual laws is what God really wants.

What is not so clear, however, is that what God wants is obedience to the law written on the heart — not to the terms of the literal law. The law written on the heart is a reference to the New Covenant. This is the spiritual meaning of the law. This differs greatly, of course, from the Law of Moses which is a vast collection of rules and regulations that must be observed through fleshly, physical activities that includes sacrifices and offerings, while obedience to the spirit of the law is a matter of the heart.

People who continue to offer material sacrifices and offerings (e.g. money, worship, etc.) are convinced that it is in their heart to do so. The truth is, however, that they do it because it is expected of them by the religious authorities of the religious institutions they attend.

There is an unwritten law in those institutions that says if you attend there and take advantage of the religious services provided there you should contribute something for the support of the institutions and religious leaders who deliver those services to you. It is technically not a fee for service or a tax because people are free to pay as much as they want when they want. But this does not dismiss the fact that there is an expectation that people must pay for the support of the institution and its leaders.

This expectation is the equivalent of an external law that commands making sacrifices and offerings. God does not want such offerings because the command originates from the religious institution — not with God. Passing the collection plate creates a not too subtle obligation to put something in it. In God’s view, that is a law that does not originate from him.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: Even people who have not studied much of Old/First Covenant scripture know that God has given clear directions about various types of sacrifices and offerings. With that knowledge in mind, Psalm 40:6-8 appears to contradict what God about bringing sacrifices and offerings to him. Knowing, however, that God does not change his mind, we should conclude that the problem is in our understanding and not with God. To gain a right interpretation of the scripture, therefore, we first need to understand that God uses symbolism and mystery to communicate his truth to us.

Psalms 50:8-23 I do not reprove you for your sacrifices; your burnt offerings are continually before me. 9 I will accept no bull from your house, nor he-goat from your folds. 10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine. 12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world and all that is in it is mine. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? 14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High; 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” 16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes, or take my covenant on your lips? 17 For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you. 18 If you see a thief, you are a friend of his; and you keep company with adulterers. 19 “You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. 20 You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son. 21 These things you have done and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. Is it not themselves, to their own confusion? 20 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.” 21 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: “Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. 22 For in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this command I gave them, ‘Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’ 24 But they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and the stubbornness of their evil hearts, and went backward and not forward. 25 From the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt to this day, I have persistently sent all my servants the prophets to them, day after day; 26 yet they did not listen to me, or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck. They did worse than their fathers.

When we read these scriptures, they seem to contradict what he has said in the Law of Moses about performing physical sacrifices. But there is no contradictions in God who does not change his mind. The problem is in the many wrong ways that humans read and interpret scripture.

For example, it is hard for our natural minds to avoid thinking about literal blood sacrifices of animals and money and grain when reading about sacrifices, tithes and offerings in the Bible. Hard as it may be, however, the natural mind must be retrained to think in spiritual, not natural terms. We find the necessity for this in the following scriptures:

Psalm 51:10-19: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners will return to thee. 14 Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of thy deliverance. 15 O Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. 16 For thou hast no delight in sacrifice; were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased. 17 The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in thy good pleasure; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, 19 then wilt thou delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on thy altar.

COMMENTARY: The first verse in this series of verses creates the context for all verses that follow. The juxtaposition of heart with new and right spirit clearly say that the focus of these verses is the New Covenant which calls for laws written on the heart and a new spirit.

Verses 14-15 seem to say that verbal praise is appropriate for New Covenant disciples. Verse 16, however, clearly indicates that fleshly sacrifices of any kind are not acceptable to God. We conclude, therefore, that references to lips and mouth in verses 14-15 are symbolic — not literal. They are included in the category of material sacrifices and burnt offerings that are not pleasing to God in verse 16.

Verse 17 says clearly that the only sacrifice acceptable to God is spiritual. That means it is expressed in the heart — not with the mouth and tongue. What pleases God is hearts and spirits that are broken and contrite over participation in the sin of religion.

Right sacrifices and whole burnt offerings in verse 19 are symbolic references to spiritual sacrifices. They have been deceived by religion which teaches that religion is necessary to having a good relationship with God.

The altar in verse 19 is a spiritual altar of earth — not a physical altar because earth is a symbolic reference to people. An altar of earth, therefore, is a person who sacrifices his body of fleshly, religious activity to God. In other words, the religious person rejects religion as sin and chooses not to practice it anymore.

Psalms 95 O come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! 2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! 3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it; for his hands formed the dry land. 6 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. And the hearts of the people melted, and became as water. 6 Then Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads. 7 And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord GOD, why hast thou brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! 8 O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! 9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth; and what wilt thou do for thy great name?” 10 The LORD said to Joshua, “Arise, why have you thus fallen upon your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant which I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, and lied, and put them among their own stuff. 12 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become a thing for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.

COMMENTARY: Serving God is symbolically equated with war. We first saw this with Abraham, then with Moses and now with Joshua. When Abraham was successful in war, the spoils of war were people and his kinsmen. Immediately after the war, Abraham gave the tithe to Melchizadek, king of Salem. Melchizadek is a type of God. Thus, in giving the tithe to Melchizadek, Abraham gave the people and the kinsmen he had rescued to God. He did not consider that the people were his to keep even though he had won them in battle. He refused to give up the people to the King of Sodom because keeping the people was the fulfillment of God’s promise to Adam that he would be the father of many nations.

1-Samuel 2:12-17 12 Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they had no regard for the LORD. 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14 and he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. So they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.” 16 And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.” 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD; for the men treated the offering of the LORD with contempt.

1 Samuel 3:1-14The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. Why did you swoop on the spoil, and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?” 20 And Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, I have gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, I have brought Agag the king of Am’alek, and I have utterly destroyed the Amal’ekites. 21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.” 22 And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? For I will pour out their wickedness upon them. 17 “You shall say to them this word: ‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people is smitten with a great wound, with a very grievous blow.

Amos 4:1-9 1 “Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are in the mountain of Sama’ria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their husbands, ‘Bring, that we may drink!’ 2 The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness that, behold, the days are coming upon you, when they shall take you away with hooks, even the last of you with fishhooks. 3 And you shall go out through the breaches, every one straight before her; and you shall be cast forth into Harmon,” says the LORD. 4 “Come to Bethel, and transgress; to Gilgal, and multiply transgression; bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three days; 5 offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened, and proclaim freewill offerings, publish them; for so you love to do, O people of Israel!” says the Lord GOD. 6 “I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and lack of bread in all your places, yet you did not return to me,” says the LORD. 7 “And I also withheld the rain from you when there were yet three months to the harvest; I would send rain upon one city, and send no rain upon another city; one field would be rained upon, and the field on which it did not rain withered; 8 so two or three cities wandered to one city to drink water, and were not satisfied; yet you did not return to me,” says the LORD. 9 “I smote you with blight and mildew; I laid waste your gardens and your vineyards; your fig trees and your olive trees the locust devoured; yet you did not return to me,” says the LORD.

Amos 5:12-27 12 For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins–you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate. 13 Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. 14 Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, as you have said. 15 Hate evil, and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph. 16 Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord: “In all the squares there shall be wailing; and in all the streets they shall say, ‘Alas! alas!’ They shall call the farmers to mourning and to wailing those who are skilled in lamentation, 17 and in all vineyards there shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of you,” says the LORD. 18 Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! Why would you have the day of the LORD? In Bible times, it was a violent act to physically kill an animal. Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How are we robbing thee?’ In your tithes and offerings.

COMMENTARY: The common interpretation of this is that failure to pay tithes and offerings to a religious institution from which someone receives religious services (e.g. teaching, sacraments, music, weddings, funerals, etc.) is the equivalent of robbing God. Religious leaders will shamelessly use this scripture to guilt people into increasing their tithes and offerings.

9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me; the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house; and thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.

COMMENTARY: The common interpretation of the storehouse is the religious building in which religious services are offered. The implication is that failure to pay a full ten-percent tithe is the equivalent of robbing and testing God.

This interpretation takes the concept of a spiritual storehouse for spiritual food and converts it to a physical building and institution. Yet you say, ‘How have we spoken against thee?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. The problem with using this scripture for this purpose is that verses 8-10 which mention tithes are unique in the larger context of Malachi 3 which is about judgment. The challenge, therefore, is to understand how failure to tithe fits into that judgment.

To help understanding, it is useful to first look at verse seven which talks first about turning aside (disobedience) from God’s statutes, and then about “returning” to God. To begin, it is important to know that the Hebrew word translated as “return” in English in the RSV is “shuwb” which essentially means to repent. With that fact in mind, it becomes easier to reject the traditional interpretation of this scripture (i.e. return money to God), and see that Malachi 3 is about judgment for disobedience to God’s spiritual laws and not about money or other religious laws.

God is making his point about obedience symbolically by saying that Israel’s failure to be faithful to its New Covenant responsibilities (i.e. his spiritual laws) is the equivalent of “robbing” God. Israel made an agreement (i.e. covenant) to obey God’s spiritual laws, and now it has reneged on its part of the deal. It has done its best to follow Old/First Covenant religious laws, but they are not acceptable to God. Therefore, this scripture is not about robbing God of money which should be returned to him, but it is about disobedience for which Israel must repent and return to obedience to God’s spiritual laws. The scripture is further explained by God’s return to Israel after turning away from them and punishing them which is what he does in the face of disobedience. This is fully consistent with what God said regarding his behaviors toward Israel if it is not faithful to obey his laws.

MORE COMMENTARY: While the above commentary establishes that Malachi 3 is not about tithing money, it does not clarify what the tithe really is. Looking back at Malachi 1, we see that God’s complaint is about blemished, polluted sacrifices made in obedience to religious, not spiritual, laws.

MORE COMMENTARY: It is instructive to review God’s warnings to Israel when Israel said it wanted a king. Among other warnings, God said a king would take a tenth of Israel’s seed and flocks. not physical sacrifices. This excludes animal sacrifices, money, and anything that can be accomplished with the physical body. All these can be observed and are therefore not spirit and not expressions of faith.

REINTERPRETING PHYSICAL SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS
Israel was especially zealous was in making sacrifices and offerings. Ancient Israel understood well that its covenant relationship with God and its righteousness depended on obedience to The Law of Moses which required blood sacrifices and various kinds of offerings. Many modern day Jews hold on to these laws as they wait for the temple to be rebuilt so that blood sacrifices can be renewed.

Most people do not live in agricultural societies that gives them ready access to animal sacrifices and burnt offerings which are the most visible and tangible features of worship. Therefore, they make their own logical attempts to understand the spirit of the law by assuming that money is the modern equivalent for blood sacrifices (e.g. oxen, cattle, sheep, goats, dove, pigeon, etc.) and agricultural offerings (e.g. grain, meal, flour, etc.). In their ignorance of the spirit of the law, they have replaced material Biblical sacrifices and offerings with another material offering: Money.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: See Religion is Commerce and its subordinate pages for a full discussion of the many ways money has become the standard for sacrifices, offerings, and worship.

In making these substitutions, people make the mistake of thinking that money is spiritual. It is not, of course, because money is a natural thing that can be seen and touched. In fact it is no more spiritual than sacrificial animals, grain or libations. By always focusing on natural sacrifices and offerings, religionists totally miss what God has in mind for spiritual sacrifices and offerings. They also violate other scriptures that warn about adding to or subtracting from scripture.

The only way to avoid these problems is to seek to understand the spiritual intent of the written word and resist trying to achieve righteousness by making physical offerings over and over again. We should learn this lesson from Jesus, who, as our High Priest, made a physical sacrifice only once and then sat down at the right hand of God.

ANIMAL SACRIFICES WERE IMPORTANT TO JERUSALEM’S ECONOMY
One reason animal sacrifices were so important to Israel is found in the fact that they fueled Jerusalem’s economy. Because the temple was the only place where sacrifices were to be made, all Jews who made sacrifices came to Jerusalem to make their sacrifices. This temple activity was very big business. All this Commercial Religion was the reason that Jesus drove out the Money-Changers in the Temple.

While Jesus’ encounter with the money changers was a real event, we must not look at it only as history. Symbolically, it prophetically anticipates the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. More than that, it anticipates the destruction of the obsolete Old/First Covenant religious system based on the literal law of Moses to make way for the better New Covenant which is made according to better promises.

WORD DEFINITIONS A proper understanding of sacrifices, tithes and offerings is one of the most serious failures of Biblical interpretation in both Judaism and Christianity.
