The style of music varies from one religion to another. Anyone who doubts the importance of music to religion only needs to try to imagine a religious service without music or with music that is not part of their personal religious history. Such a worship service will be very unsatisfying.

Every religion includes music because music always stirs up positive emotions and physical feelings. When we apply this power to religious music we see how it is a constant source of influence within religion to generate good, positive feelings to religionists — especially in ritualistic worship settings. Being well aware of this influence, religious leaders are always mindful of the need to include music in any religious gathering as a sure-fire way of creating those good feelings which will keep people coming back for more.

What we learn from these scientific studies about the effects of music on people is that the good feelings it inspires are not exclusive to religious music and not exclusive to Jews and Christians. In other words, any music has the potential to affect any human person. The relative strength of the effects of music on any individual is dependent on their cultural training — not on God.

Religious people should take the following lessons from these studies:

The fact that a particular type of music (e.g. hymns, contemporary worship songs, chants, etc.) stirs the body (i.e. releases dopamine) and creates good feelings (e.g. joy, tears, etc.) does not mean that the music is evidence of a two-way connection with God.

All religions employ music as a way to make people feel good about participating in the religion.

All religions employ music as a way to convince people that they are communicating with their god through music.

All religions employ music as a way of convincing people that their particular type of music is especially pleasing to their god because he will reward them with good feelings when they worship using that music.

The role of music in religion has been well-documented. It is especially worth noting that music was an active feature of religion in Egypt, Sumeria and Babylon because these nations had profound religious influence on Israel which had its own unique musical history during Biblical times.

We conclude from this brief history that music, singing, dance and religion are inseparable. This history, along with our casual observations of religious activities in all cultures as we see them portrayed in movies and television, reveals that some form of music, singing, and body motion (sometimes outright dancing) is always present in religious activity. Consider, for example, the solemn processions of Catholics, hymns of the protestants, the dancing of Pentecostals and the dances of indigenous cultures. They all employ music, body motion (i.e. dancing, solemn processions, bowing, raising hands, etc.) and singing in their religion.

In addition to these modern examples that we can observe directly, researchers have documented the history of religious music in many cultures to confirm what we think we know about music and religion. And of course we have many Old Testament examples of music, dancing and singing that lend an apparent spiritual legitimacy to these activities. We say “apparent spiritual legitimacy” because we find many other scriptures that bring the spiritual legitimacy of these activities into serious doubt. These scriptures are the focus of this series of pages.

The idea that music, singing and dancing are not legitimate religious activities will shock most readers. How can something so beautiful, so inspirational be anything but spiritual? How can these traditions which have been practiced by our spiritual fathers for so many years be denied to be anything but Godly?

The reason that these traditions are ungodly is that religious nations in Biblical times included music in their religious practices. That fact alone will not convince most religious people that music and dance are ungodly. What should convince them, however, is the fact that many times God said Israel should not follow the abominable practices of other religions. If we consider these clear commands alongside the truths that all scripture is useful for training in righteousness, and that God does not look at outward appearances (including what the body might be doing), we can begin to appreciate that music and other expressions of human flesh are not acceptable to God. And if that does not convince, then we only need to remember that God looks at the heart and that flesh, including what the flesh does, counts for nothing.

When we say that music is not acceptable to God, we are not saying that music, singing and dancing are intrinsically evil or bad. What we are saying, however, that music, singing and dancing in a religious context are not recognized by God as ligimate expressions of spiritual worship. They are, however, expressions of religious worship which is not the equivalent of spiritual worship expressed through invisible faith (i.e. pure heart).

To understand that music, singing and dancing are not acceptable to God, we must first understand that religion can always be observed because it always involves use of physical, natural things — including the physical body which plays music, sings and dances. Physical expressions of the natural body cannot be spiritual, or faith-driven, because the nature of spirit and faith is that they cannot be seen, touched, tasted, heard or smelled. Therefore, while religion can be observed by anyone, true spiritual faith is always invisible — except to God — because they are internal matters of the heart which only God can see.

Religion is all around us. But, the rewards of hearing God’s voice more than compensates for loss of relationships with people.

STUDY TIP: See The World for understanding of the world of religion.

No one is excused from obedience to God’s command that his people should not follow the customs of surrounding religious nations. The fact that a religious practice has been a tradition for many years does not make it acceptable to God. Nor does mention of God’s name or Jesus’ name in the music automatically qualify music as acceptable. Music in any form is always an expression of the flesh and not of the spirit.

If it is true that religious music is not acceptable to God, we might logically wonder how generations of Jews and Christians might have made such an error. The answer is the same for music as it is for all forms of religious activity found in the Bible. Music, along with all other religious activity is modeled after the religions of ancient Egypt and Babylon.

When reading the Bible we must always remember that it is full of symbolism where God uses natural things or behaviors to represent spiritual truths. This the fulfillment of the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle in understanding the Bible. Thus, just as God uses physical temples, food and blood sacrifices to represent spiritual truths, he uses physical music and dancing to represent spiritual worship.

STUDY TIP: See Symbols, Signs, Types, Copies and Shadows, and subordinate pages for discussion of many Biblical symbols.

Accepting that music and dancing are manifestations of the flesh and not spirit will be a hard pill to swallow for religionists who have strong affections for their chosen styles of religious music. The scripture says that singing and making music is something that happens internally where God alone can hear it — not externally where others can hear. This understanding is fully consistent with the fact that God looks at the heart and not the outward appearance of activities of people.

The word that is translated as “sacred” in many versions of the Bible in the Old Testament is translated from the Hebrew word “Qodesh” which is always translated as “holy” in the King James Version. Using the definition in qodesh, we find that it primarily means “set apart.” In the New Testament, the word “holy” is translated from the Greek word “Hagios,” but there is no further explanation of what it means. Thus our primary understanding of holy things is that they are set apart. But that does not help much, so we need to look deeper into scripture to discover what it is that is set apart and what it means to be set apart:

COMMENTARY ON WHAT IT MEANS TO BE SACRED, OR HOLY: Because Christians tend to ignore the Old Testament, they tend to think of the “holy spirit” as a New Testament phenomenon introduced at the Pentecost event in Acts 2: 1-13. If anything is called sacred or holy, it is equated with God himself because only God is holy. And, because only God knows the condition of hearts, only God is qualified to determine if a person’s heart is clean and pure or evil and impure.

Nevertheless, in many religions, people are said to be holy because of all the religious things that people see them do. People who appear to obey the rules of a particular religion are therefore said to be holy. This is not what God means by holiness. God makes his evaluation on obedience to his spiritual laws that are written on the heart.

Since God is both invisible and holy, anything else that is holy must also be invisible. Thus, the only thing about a person that can be rightly called holy is the heart which only God can see.

Religion, including Judaism and Christianity have totally perverted the concept of sacredness and holiness. Simply calling something like music or a religious relic or a building sacred or holy does not make it so. No one, not even a powerful religious leader has the authority to declare any physical thing holy. Calling things sacred is idle religious talk that has no real spiritual power, but it does have religious power because gullible people don’t know the truth.

We must all keep in mind that, just as God is holy (i.e. set apart), any holy thing must have the same characteristics that God has. Since one of God’s primary characteristics is invisibility, all truly holy things must also be invisible or not observable with the natural senses such as eyes, ears or touch. Since God commands his people to be holy, their holiness characteristics will be invisible also — except to God alone who knows the heart. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. 19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is violently shaken. 20 The earth staggers like a drunken man, it sways like a hut; its transgression lies heavy upon it, and it falls, and will not rise again. 21 On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. 22 They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished. 23 Then the moon will be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for the LORD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem and before his elders he will manifest his glory.

COMMENTARY: Because the world is cursed with religion, all kinds of bad things will happen to it.

Ezekiel 26 In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, because Tyre said concerning Jerusalem, ‘Aha, the gate of the peoples is broken, it has swung open to me; I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ 3 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves. 4 They shall destroy the walls of Tyre, and break down her towers; and I will scrape her soil from her, and make her a bare rock. 5 She shall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets; for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD; and she shall become a spoil to the nations; 6 and her daughters on the mainland shall be slain by the sword. Then they will know that I am the LORD. 7 “For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will bring upon Tyre from the north Nebuchadrez’zar king of Babylon, king of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers. 8 He will slay with the sword your daughters on the mainland; he will set up a siege wall against you, and throw up a mound against you, and raise a roof of shields against you. 9 He will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10 His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you; your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as one enters a city which has been breached. 11 With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets; he will slay your people with the sword; and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12 They will make a spoil of your riches and a prey of your merchandise; they will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses; your stones and timber and soil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 And I will stop the music of your songs, and the sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 I will make you a bare rock; you shall be a place for the spreading of nets; you shall never be rebuilt; for I the LORD have spoken, says the Lord GOD. 15 “Thus says the Lord GOD to Tyre: Will not the coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in the midst of you? 16 Then all the princes of the sea will step down from their thrones, and remove their robes, and strip off their embroidered garments; they will clothe themselves with trembling; they will sit upon the ground and tremble every moment, and be appalled at you. 17 And they will raise a lamentation over you, and say to you, ‘How you have vanished from the seas, O city renowned, that was mighty on the sea, you and your inhabitants, who imposed your terror on all the mainland! 18 Now the isles tremble on the day of your fall; yea, the isles that are in the sea are dismayed at your passing.’ 19 “For thus says the Lord GOD: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, when I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20 then I will thrust you down with those who descend into the Pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the nether world, among primeval ruins, with those who go down to the Pit, so that you will not be inhabited or have a place in the land of the living. 21 I will bring you to a dreadful end, and you shall be no more; though you be sought for, you will never be found again, says the Lord GOD.”

COMMENTARY: Tyre is another symbolic reference to organized religion just like Egypt and Babylon. It has become a dwelling place of demons, a haunt of every foul spirit, a haunt of every foul and hateful bird; 3 for all nations have drunk the wine of her impure passion, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich with the wealth of her wantonness.” 4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; 5 for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. 6 Render to her as she herself has rendered, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double draught for her in the cup she mixed. 7 As she glorified herself and played the wanton, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning. Since in her heart she says, ‘A queen I sit, I am no widow, mourning I shall never see,’ 8 so shall her plagues come in a single day, pestilence and mourning and famine, and she shall be burned with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.” 9 And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and were wanton with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning; 10 they will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! alas! thou great city, thou mighty city, Babylon! In one hour has thy judgment come.” 11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo any more, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels and pearls, fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet, all kinds of scented wood, all articles of ivory, all articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls. 14 “The fruit for which thy soul longed has gone from thee, and all thy dainties and thy splendor are lost to thee, never to be found again!” 15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, 16 “Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, bedecked with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! 17 In one hour all this wealth has been laid waste.” And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, “What city was like the great city?” 19 And they threw dust on their heads, as they wept and mourned, crying out, “Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! In one hour she has been laid waste. 20 Rejoice over her, O heaven, O saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her!” 21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So shall Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and shall be found no more; 22 and the sound of harpers and minstrels, of flute players and trumpeters, shall be heard in thee no more; and a craftsman of any craft shall be found in thee no more; and the sound of the millstone shall be heard in thee no more; 23 and the light of a lamp shall shine in thee no more; and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall be heard in thee no more; for thy merchants were the great men of the earth, and all nations were deceived by thy sorcery. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth.”

Isaiah 65:9-19 I will bring forth descendants from Jacob, and from Judah inheritors of my mountains; my chosen shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there. 10 Sharon shall become a pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down, for my people who have sought me. 11 But you who forsake the LORD, who forget my holy mountain, who set a table for Fortune and fill cups of mixed wine for Destiny; 12 I will destine you to the sword, and all of you shall bow down to the slaughter; because, when I called, you did not answer, when I spoke, you did not listen, but you did what was evil in my eyes, and chose what I did not delight in.” 13 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, my servants shall eat, but you shall be hungry; behold, my servants shall drink, but you shall be thirsty; behold, my servants shall rejoice, but you shall be put to shame; 14 behold, my servants shall sing for gladness of heart, but you shall cry out for pain of heart, and shall wail for anguish of spirit. 15 You shall leave your name to my chosen for a curse, and the Lord GOD will slay you; but his servants he will call by a different name. 16 So that he who blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of truth, and he who takes an oath in the land shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten and are hid from my eyes. 17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. 18 But be glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. 19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress.

Amos 5:18-27 Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! Some Christians will even allow that worship music can be addictive. Some have gone so far as to propose that the effects of worship in mega churches create emotional responses that equate God to a drug. Consider the following excerpts from a paper titled: God is like a Drug…’: Explaining Interaction Ritual Chains in American Megachurches’ by James K. Wellman Jr, Katie E. Corcoran and Kate Stockly-Meyerdirk:

… This paper applies “interaction ritual theory” (Collins 2004) to American mega churches. We propose that megachurches are successful interaction ritual venues and powerful purveyors of emotional religious experience. We predict that these interaction rituals will result in positive emotional energy for participants, membership feelings, membership symbols charged with emotional significance, and heightened spirituality….page 1

… First, drawing on Collins’ (2004) Interaction Ritual Theory, we argue that mega churches are leaders in the religious market for emotional energy (EE) and ritual solidarity. Collins’ (2004) theory assumes that individuals want EE and are thus more likely to take part in rituals to the extent that they provide high levels of it. We propose that mega churches are successful interaction ritual venues and powerful purveyors of emotional religious experience. Mega church worship services are intentionally orchestrated, complete with elements from pop-cultural sources, which are both entertaining and sensually stimulating. Participants come “hungry” for EE and leave energized. Thus, contrary to past research theorizing the negative effects of large church size on organizational vitality and member commitment, we propose that the size of mega churches facilitates the generation of strong positive collective emotions through large- (i.e., worship services) and small-scale interaction rituals (i.e., small group participation). We predict that these interaction rituals will result in high-levels of EE, feelings of belonging, membership symbols, morality, and heightened spirituality… page 4

See this link for the entire paper.

These studies are based on sociological theories of ritual interaction as they are applied to particular religious contexts. Not surprisingly, the contexts which tend to facilitate the emotional energy most effectively are those which emphasize the ritual of music, singing and dance-like movements in large, compact, church environments. It must be said, however, that the same effects are also powerfully at work in small congregations that employ only a piano or organ or no instruments at all — other than the human voice.

The way we see it, these studies have exposed truths that churches have either ignored or denied about what constitutes true spirituality. Church rituals in all sizes and theological configurations depend on these rituals to keep their adherents physically and financially engaged. Whether it is singing hymns, reciting creeds or ecstatic worship, they all have an audience that will be enriched by participating in them and will keep coming back for more because it feels so good.

The prevailing attitude in religious communities is the belief that, if participation in the rituals and traditions feels good, it is spiritual. If their emotions get excited, they assume that they are connecting with God. And if they are in the company of others who are similarly excited and keep coming back for more, they assume that they have all achieved spiritual maturity. The emotions they feel are marketed as tangible evidence that the Holy Spirit is present in that church building and he physically touches (even to the point of causing people to cry or collapse under the power of the Spirit) everyone who comes there with the power of God’s love. And he will do it regularly, Sunday after Sunday.

Under these assumptions, church leaders will do whatever they need to do to satisfy the tastes and expectations of their adherents. And why shouldn’t they? The ones who keep coming back are the ones who pay the tithes which pay the pastor’s salary and keep the doors of the church open. It is a win-win proposition. But it is not a win-win proposition for God. All this religious activity has the appearance of Godliness, but lacks spiritual power.

The Bible does talk about love, of course, but God’s kind of love is not the mushy, feel good kind of emotions that music and ritual worship inspire. Jesus said, “If you love me you will keep my commandment.” Participation in ecstatic, ritual worship is not the kind of love that God is talking about. God is talking about being a New Covenant disciple who has the law written on his/her heart.

What religion represents as God’s love is nothing more than a soulish response to the effects of ritual interaction in which people are joined by their addiction to the emotional effects of joint participation in an activity they enjoy week after week. They could get the same effect by going to orchestra concerts, a sporting even or sing-a-long events in a bar, but then they could not associate the emotional effects with the Holy Spirit and call it a spiritual experience.

True spiritual experiences happen only in the heart. And they can happen anywhere at any time. They are not limited to religious gatherings in religious places.

The kind of feel good experience to which we should aspire is when we hear God’s spoken voice.

MUSIC AND RELIGION Religion always includes music.
