Almost everyone, including people who are not religious, knows the basics of the Fourth Commandment because it has influenced their lives.

Borrowing the religious practices of pagan sun-worship religions and Catholic influence, Christians moved their day of worship to the first day of the week (i.e. Sunday). Most of the Christian world has adopted Sunday worship even though most non-Catholic religions do not agree with other Catholic beliefs and practices. World-wide, most countries observe a Monday – Friday work week with Saturday and Sunday off. Even though Sunday, not the seventh day is the day of rest in most cultures (the exceptions are generally Islamic) there is general, world -wide acceptance of principles of a literal interpretation of the fourth commandment.

For Christians, beginning with Catholicism, the Sabbath has been wrongly simplified to a command to take one day a week off from work and call it a day for religious worship, called the Lord’s Day, in honor of Jesus’ resurrection. Jews, on the other hand, have refined several scriptures regarding the Sabbath to create a complex pattern of religious laws that define the Jewish religious culture.

Here is the scripture that has had such an impact on the world:

Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant * or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you. 11 “4For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

How do we as mere human mortals maintain holiness of something God has made holy? By translating qadash as keep, Bible translators strongly implied that some effort was necessary by religious people. Remembering is an internal activity that does not require effort. To “keep” requires effort.

So we must ask why Bible translators decided to translate the verse as “keep it holy” instead of “holy holy”? The answer is simple: Observing Sunday as the designated day of worship was an established Christian doctrine when the Bible was written. Saying “keep it holy” affirmed and reinforced Sunday worship. Writing “remember sabbath day holy holy” would not affirm and reinforce Sunday worship. In other words, Bible editors were compelled to interpret the Hebrew text in ways that legitimized their religious doctrines and practices.

STUDY TIP: See this link for more commentary on how Bible editors make editorial choices that change the meaning of scripture.

We must also ask why God used the word Qadash two times. It is impossible to quantify or measure holiness. Holiness has no limit because God is holy and he has no limits. And yet, he accentuates his holiness by repeating qadash. Whenever God repeats himself, he does it to reinforce a truth he has already made. The truth here is that the sabbath day (i.e. season) is very holy. That should alert us to pay close attention to it, to understand it and apply it.

Looking at the Hebrew word zakar which is translated into English as “remember,” we see that it has many more meanings than remember.

to cause to remember, remind

to cause to be remembered, keep in remembrance

to mention

to record

to make a memorial, make remembrance

We see that zakar is also translated with the following words in the NAS Bible: boast 1 time, burns 1 time, celebrate 1 time, confess 1 time , extol 1 time, make mention 2 times , mention 4 times, mentioned 5 times, mentioning 1time , recorder 9 times, remind 1 time, and report 1 time.

What we learn from this investigation of zakar is that zakar is not just something done in the mind as we normally think of remembering. Zakar actually has more of an outreach, or teaching application than an internal, personal application. Thus it is not unreasonable to suggest that Exodus 20:8 could have been written as follows:

Cause others to recognize that the sabbath season is holy holy.

Celebrate the sabbath season as holy holy.

Make mention to others that the sabbath season is holy holy.

Confess to others that the sabbath season is holy holy.

Use of these translations obviously changes the meaning and application of the fourth commandment. It is no longer a command to just remember the sabbath and keep it holy by going to church or synagogue one day a week. Rather, it is a command to tell others that the sabbath season is holy, holy. It is worth repeating. The fourth commandment is not a command to remember to go to church or synagogue one day of the week. It is a command to tell others that the sabbath day (i.e. season) — not the religious day (i.e. season) represented in the first six days — is the holy season to be observed. Saying holy holy reinforces the idea of perfection in the number seven. The season of religious work is not holy, but the season of resting from religious work is holy.

The Hebrew word yowm, which is translated as day in English, does not mean a literal, twenty-four hour day. Day can mean a single day, but it can also mean yesterday, tomorrow, a year or even a lifetime. It is wrong, therefore, to interpret the six days or the seventh day as unique days of the week. In God’s view, day is a period of time, a season of life — not a literal day. Only he can bless hearts and only he can make hearts holy. Man’s responsibility is to remember. Since the sabbath is a reference to the condition of the hearts of New Covenant disciples, only New Covenant disciples can remember what life was like before they entered into the New Covenant***

If the command is to simply rest for one day a week with the expectation that resting one day a week keeps the day holy, then anyone, even someone who does not believe in God, but who does rest one day a week could keep the day holy. This is absurd. Scripture says that only God is holy. There must be more to this commandment than just resting one day a week.

STUDY TIP: See this link for commentary on what it means to be holy.

Since God always speaks in parables, there are serious problems with literal interpretations of any scripture. This is also true regarding the fourth commandment. What God means by day of rest and what man means are not the same. God’s focus is on spiritual rest, and man’s focus is on physical rest. It is critical, therefore, that people who want to please God should understand the Fourth Command as a parable about spiritual rest.

Changing minds about something as entrenched in religious doctrine as Sunday worship is not easy. Sunday worship is a stronghold of wrong thinking, but God can change minds and hearts in those who can hear his voice.

So what are the problems with literal interpretation of the fourth commandment? Looking at the literal command, taking one day off from work sounds simple and doable for most people in western cultures. But, what about the people who must work all day every day to stay alive? If they don’t work seven days a week, they will probably go hungry. We must ask if God would make a commandment that would cause physical or financial hardship for people?

When we look at the entire commandment in context, we see that there is more to it than taking one day off from work in a week. We see that it mentions family, servants, animals and foreigners. If we are open-minded, we might wonder how a child who does not have a job rests one day a week. We might wonder how a housewife can strictly observe the commandment because she must work every day to care for her family. And what about servants, animals and foreigners? What does it mean that these should not work on the seventh day? We might also wonder how foreigners who are not religious, or practice another religion, should observe the commandment. These are all practical issues for anyone who wants to observe the literal commands without compromise.

For any command God makes, obedience must be possible for everyone — regardless of culture or work habits. If a command is impossible to obey, it would be an unjust, unfair command. God would not make a command that is unjust, unfair, or unworkable for anyone. This is a big clue for us that the literal interpretation of resting from work one day a week is not what God has in mind.

In this series of pages we will show where Jews and Christians have erred in their understanding of the seventh day in general and the Fourth Commandment in particular, and explain their deep, complex meanings. We will begin by stating these two, basic facts:

1. The number seven and the concept of the seventh day appears throughout scripture. We find it as seven, seventh, seventy, or seven-fold four hundred and eighty-six times in the Old Testament and seventy-six times in the New Testament. It also appears as multiples of seven such as fourteen, twenty-one, seventy-seven, seventy times seven, seven hundred and seven thousand. From this quick review we clearly see that the number seven has significance far beyond the seventh day of the week. Seven is always used in the Bible to symbolically represent completion or perfection.

Of all Biblical symbols, the meaning of seven may be among those that are best understood. Almost everyone in Judaism and Christianity has learned that the number seven has symbolic meaning commonly described as completion and perfection. That is a fair and accurate understanding as far as it goes, but the application of the concept of completion and perfection is where people stumble. For example, how are we to understand seven lambs, seven ears of grain, seven years of famine, seven loaves, seven days, seven clean animals, days, and so on? It is good to know that the number refers to completion and perfection, but that does not mean much if the symbolism of lambs, years, days, animals and days is not understood. Lacking that understanding, we remain confused about what exactly is completed and perfected.

STUDY TIP: In the table below are several Topics featured in this website. we begin to see hints that there is more to the Fourth Commandment than direction about when to take a day off from physical work and when to gather for religious meetings. Such simplistic instructions fail to satisfy the purpose of all scripture which is to correct us and train us in righteousness. But, just as physical or mental training does not happen without effort, training in righteousness also requires effort. This kind of effort, however, is different from other effort. It is the effort that a disciple/learner invests in study. ***

To get to the depth of the Fourth Commandment, and learn as a true disciple, we must carefully consider all the Biblical clues God has provided because all of God’s words have meaning for us. We conclude, therefore, that God’s use of seven in the above scriptures relates in some way to his use of seven in the Fourth Commandment. It all begins to come into focus when the number seven is combined with the concept of the Sabbath, which is a day. But, we must remember that day in the Bible is not a literal, single day of the week. Day in the fourth commandment is a season, or, in the case of the Seventh Day, it is a day/season of perfection. Furthermore, when the Seventh Day is called a day of rest (i.e. ceasing from work), it must be considered as a day/season of perfect rest/ceasing from work.

Therefore, if we really want to respect the fourth commandment’s reminder to keep the Sabbath holy, we should make a serious effort to understand it.

The Sabbath (Shabbat in Hebrew/Judaism) is mentioned often throughout the Bible. There are sixty entries in the KJV of Old/First Covenant Scriptures and fifty-five entries in the KJV of New Covenant scriptures. We might well imagine that it deserves this special attention because of its presence in the list of Ten Commandments as the Fourth Commandment, but once we delve into the spiritual meaning of the Sabbath, we find that it goes way beyond the one commandment. And we find that it is not about physical rest that bodies need after hard work.

Most readers will be surprised to learn that the Sabbath concept is first introduced in Genesis. Here we find the Hebrew word “shabath” interpreted as “rest” eleven times and as “cease” forty-seven times. We conclude, therefore, that Exodus 20:8-11 could have rightly been translated as follows:

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. It represents the literal words of the written Bible. It does not spoil.

While in the wilderness, Israel was busy, working to consume (i.e. eat) God’s words. The same is true for Christians. That changes, however, when theyenter the Promised Land. When they enter the Promised Land, they no longer have to work gathering God’s words. In the Promised Land, they hear God’s voice in their hearts according to the terms of the New Covenant. For six days (i.e. a symbolic period of time that is different for each individual, religious people work hard at practicing religion with the hope of hearing God speak. When they cross over into the Promised Land, however, the enter the Seventh Day/Sabbath season of their life in which they do no more religious work (i.e. they are at rest).

Entering into the Promised Land symbolizes coming into the Sabbath rest. While they were traveling in the wilderness, they worked for their manna by picking it up everyday. The omer of manna in a jar place before the Lord symbolizes the law written on the hearts of New Covenant disciples. The practice of resting on the seventh day actually began with the Babylonians who observed Sabbath rests in conjunction with their lunar calendar. Thus we have another example where, in a literal reading of the Bible, we find God instructing his people to do something that was already practiced by a Gentile religion. This appears to be a blatant contradiction of God’s commands elsewhere that his people should not follow the customs of other nations. But what God was really doing was using the Babylonian custom to symbolically refer to resting from religious works.

This is an example of the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle in which God introduces a desired spiritual principle with an undesired natural practice. The natural practice, of course, is to conduct religious activities on the seventh day of the week. Since Saturday is the seventh day of the week, Jews observe the Sabbath on Saturday. It is the one special day of the week dedicated to gathering together for worship. Catholic Christians reinterpreted the Biblical text and modified Jewish practice by naming Sunday as the day dedicated for communal worship. And so, Christians consider Sunday, the first day of the week to be the equivalent of the seventh day Sabbath.

This adjustment of days has no real spiritual significance because, in God’s view, the seventh day is not a literal day. The seventh day is a picture of a heart at rest from practicing religion. The seventh day is a lifestyle for New Covenant disciples who have God’s laws written on their hearts. See this link for comparisons of the two covenants.

In God’s kingdom, worship is an ongoing spiritual activity of a clean, pure heart. This is what it means to worship in spirit and truth. This is what New Covenant disciples do. This kind of worship is contrasted with physical (i.e. fleshly) worship in churches and synagogues.

In addition to the Fourth Commandment, Christians find significance in the fact that Jesus is referred to as the Lord of the Sabbath. Like the Jews, Christians honor the Sabbath as their day for regular meetings because several scriptures indicate that meetings occurred on the Sabbath. Curiously, Christians have adjusted the Sabbath from the seventh day of the week to the first day of the week (i.e. Sunday). So even though Sunday does not technically satisfy the requirement of keeping the Sabbath holy, they still consider that their Sunday meetings fulfill the Fourth Commandment. This is an example of man’s religious laws superseding God’s spiritual laws.

Observance of the Sabbath day is presented in many scriptures as lists of permitted and prohibited activities. border-style: solid; border-color: #000000;">

These tables help us to understand the Fourth Commandment. It must be said emphatically, however, that these lists are of no value unless the spiritual intent of each listed activity is understood. Before we get to that understanding, however, we will briefly review some of the problems with the literal understandings of the Fourth Commandment. For example:

Why would God command us to work for six days when it is a financial necessity for almost everyone to work five to seven days a week anyway?

How do modern cultures that do not include care of animals or employment of servants apply these principles?

What is the big deal about taking one day a week off from work? Even if our employer only requires us to work five or six days a week, there is always work to do at home the other one or two days.

Does God really expect everyone to avoid doing the activities listed in the prohibited column? Many of them are totally impractical.

How can the God who knows everything be so out of touch with the realities of life and put such demands on people?

Why would God need a commandment to rest one day a week? Everyone knows that our bodies need physical rest, but in some cultures even taking one day a week off from work is not possible.

Why do Christian cultures take their day of rest on the first day of the week instead of the seventh day? There appears to be a desire to observe the spirit of the commandment while ignoring the specifics of it. Is that OK with God?

Because the literal understanding of the commandment seems so clear, most people do not bother trying to reconcile these practical questions with their literal interpretations of the Bible. Out of a desire to be religiously obedient, many people will zealously obey the rules that they can reasonably obey while ignoring those that make no sense or are impractical to follow. In making these accommodations, they lack both intellectual and religious integrity. They not only subtract from the law, but they also show that they lack common sense in application of religious rules. And they do this because they insist on interpreting the Bible literally without looking for symbolic meaning.

Unfortunately, these intellectual and spiritual challenges are not on anyone’s religious radar. Because Christian and Jewish cultures have a long history of incorporating either the seventh or first day of the week as a day of rest, Christians and Jews assume that religious leaders past and present have the doctrine all figured out and all they need to do is accommodate their personal work/rest schedules to prevailing cultural patterns which conform to prevailing religious customs. With these attitudes firmly in place for hundreds of years, no one imagines that there is any need to investigate alternative spiritual understandings that might resolve these practical issues. Thus, having discarded reason in deference to the ways of trusted religious fathers, Jews and Christians remain ignorant of what God really intended by the commandment.

THE GOOD NEWS (i.e. TRUE GOSPEL)
We have good news for people who are troubled by the intellectual and spiritual conflicts in following the literal understanding of the Fourth Commandment.

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="750" />
<col width="0" /></colgroup>

The commandment is not really about resting our physical bodies from our occupational or physical labors.

Nor is it about avoiding any of the other prohibited Sabbath activities.

Rather, it is about ceasing or ending (not just resting) from our religious work.

A quick look at the definition of the Hebrew word translated as rest makes that point very clear. This definition is affirmed in the New Testament where the Greek word translated as rest also speaks of ceasing from labors.

When we apply this definition (i.e. resting equals ceasing) to our natural lives, we confront other real issues that are hard to reconcile with the demands of maintaining a job and earning income. And we are further confused about what God might have meant by the commandment when the notion of religious work is introduced to our vocabulary and menu of religious doctrines.

We need to be careful, therefore, not to think of physical labor when thinking of rest. If we take the time to think about it, those of us who know that we are created in God’s image would have guessed that physical rest was never the real issue. After all, why would God need to rest on the seventh day after six days of creation? He does not have a physical body that tires out, or a mind that is taxed intellectually so that he would need to rest after his creative work mentioned in Genesis 1. It is not like he needed to take a break and relax after six days of intensive work so he could renew his creative efforts the following week with renewed energy. If those were not God’s reasons for resting on the seventh day, why would we think that those are the reasons he would command us to rest?

Or, if we consider that resting from work actually means ceasing from work, we must wrestle with the fact that God did not cease his creative efforts after the first six days of creation. In fact, he remains actively involved in the world by recreating people into his image. This is God’s primary spiritual work.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: Since the fourth commandment is framed in an attitude of “remembering” the Sabbath (i.e. the seventh day of creation) it is necessary to understand the seventh day in the context of the entire creation story.

If the Fourth Commandment is not about physical and occupational rest, we wonder what is left from which we could or should rest or cease that God would see fit to make a commandment about it? The quick and simple answer is that it is about resting (i.e. ceasing) from our religious labors (i.e. religious works). Before looking at the logic of this answer, however, we must considered the following facts about the language of Exodus 20:9 where the Fourth Commandment is first introduced:

When God said to remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy, he was referring to the seventh day of creation in which he rested (i.e. ceased) from his work with natural things (i.e. things that can be seen, touched, heard and smelled with our natural senses).

“What?” most people will say. “That is not what the scripture says. It does not mention that God rested from his religious work.” This is true, but what God does rest from is his work with natural, religious things (i.e. religious people) after he guides them into the seventh day. Entering into the seventh day (i.e. the season of their lives in which they are no longer religious) represents the conclusion of the transformation/creation process. Symbolically speaking, God rests when his people rest from their religious lives. His creative work is done.

Clearly we do not get this “religious work” interpretation directly from the Fourth Commandment scripture. Nor do we find any clear, direct interpretation about religious work in Hebrews 3-4 or anywhere else in the Bible. But, like other Bible topics, the explanation about a topic does not appear in the same place the topic is introduced. It is generally, true, however, that the details about a topic are explained in many different places later in the Bible.

In the matter of the Sabbath, religious work is equated with God’s creative spiritual work in Genesis. There God uses the symbolism of creating natural things (e.g. heaven, earth, animals, etc.) to represent the spiritual transformation of Old/First Covenant religionists to New Covenant disciples. And there he also equates that creative spiritual work to the physically creative work/activity that is the substance of religion.

With this understanding, then, we can appreciate why God says that his people should rest and do no work (i.e. religious work/activity) on the Seventh Day. They have spent a period of time (i.e. six days) practicing Old/First Covenant religion, but when they repent of being religious and become New Covenant disciples, they enter into the spiritual “Seventh Day” in which they practice none of the religious habits of their previous religious life. In other words, they rest from doing creative religious work just like God rested from his creative spiritual work.

A SHORT EXPLANATION OF THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT
Like many other Bible topics, the Sabbath is so deep and complicated that we hardly know where to begin exploring the mystery of it. Since we must begin somewhere, we will begin with the summary before we explain how we came to understand it. So we give you these four bullet points as references for what will follow:

<colgroup>
<col width="50" />
<col width="650" />
<col width="0" /></colgroup>

It is not about the seventh day of the week in its natual sense. Rather, the seventh day is a symbolic representation of the status of being in a New Covenant relationship with God.

Nor is it about a day of ceasing from occupational labors for one day of the week.

When God says “rest” he means ending religious works that lead to death.

It is about ceasing our attempts to satisfy all of the requirements of the Mosaic Law, or any other religious laws, which we feel obliged to follow in order to achieve righteousness in the eyes of God or in the eyes of people.

In these four points we see that the Fourth Commandment is not about a literal day of literal rest from occupational labors.

With that critical understanding in place, we must next proceed to unwrap the hidden and extremely important truth about the Sabbath and its relationship to the Promised Land.

Having read Promised Land, you are now ready to entertain a different view of the Sabbath. You are ready to remove your eyes from what is seen (i.e. sabbath is the seventh day of the week) and fix your eyes on what is unseen (i.e. on the spiritual meaning of the seventh day).

Even before he gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, God establishes the spiritual model for the Sabbath in the creation story.

Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all his work which he had done in creation.

We see in this story that the Sabbath has always been a holy day. God blessed it because it was the day on which he rested from all his creative work. In saying “remember the Sabbath to keep it holy,” God reminded his people that he rested on the seventh day after six days of creative works.

This is where the explanation of the fourth commandment begins to get controversial. The Bible literalists argue that creation occurred in seven literal days. There are many problems with this argument, but we will begin with the question about the status of the eighth day and every day following. If God singled out the seventh day of creation as holy, we are compelled to inquire about the status of every calendar day since creation by pondering the following issues:

<colgroup>
<col width="30" />
<col width="650" />
<col width="0" /></colgroup>

Was it only the seventh day of creation that God declared as holy? Obviously not because every seventh day after creation has the potential to be holy because, in the fourth commandment, God reminds us to keep those calendar days holy. Thus, references to the Seventh Day are not to a particular seventh day but to an eternal spiritual condition where people (i.e. New Covenant disciples) rest from their creative religious works

If every seventh day of the calendar week has the potential to be holy, how should we think about the first through sixth days of every week since creation? Are they unholy or do they also have the potential to be holy. Obviously they are not unholy because God has been actively involved in the world every day since creation and everything he does is holy. Therefore, the first through the sixth days of every week since creation are also holy

Since the fourth commandment is framed in terms of remembering how God regarded the seventh day, we must also adopt his attitude about every day of every calendar week since creation as being holy.

These arguments are valid, of course, only if we hold to the belief that creation was not a singular unique event in time as we argue in Creation. They are valid only if the creation story is considered to be a prophetic picture of God’s ongoing creative (i.e. re-creative) spiritual work in addition to his original work of creating the physical universe.

When this attitude is adopted it is then possible to conclude that every day of the natural, calendar week, year in and year out is holy. And having come to that understanding, it is also possible to conclude that the fourth commandment does not refer to one special day of the calendar week. That means the Bible literalists are wrong about creation and that religious sects such as the Jews, Seventh Day Adventists and Messianic Christians are wrong about strict observance of the seventh day as a day of rest from physical work. It also means that Christians who maintain that observance of the seventh day commandment has been amended to apply to the first day of the week are also wrong in singling out one day of the calendar week for rest.

If the fourth commandment is not about ceasing from physical labors on one calendar day of each week, we then need to try to understand what it is about. And we need to also understand what is it that we should or should not do that contributes to holiness. Now we have an opening in which we can consider the claim we have made that it is about ceasing from religious works every day — not just one day a week.

The commandment, therefore, is to do as God did in resting from our creative works. But our creative works are not the same as God’s creative works. The work that God wants us to rest from are our religious works in which we try to become like God in our own eyes and in the eyes of others.

To fully understand this issue of being like God, we must go back to the Creation story. But even before looking at the Creation story we must take a fresh look at God.

THE DOWNSIDE OF BEING CREATED IN GOD’S IMAGE
What we need to keep foremost in mind is that if God is holy, everything he does is holy. We would not want to say that some things he does are secular and some things are holy. It would be a great underestimation of God to suggest that some of his works are only for natural purposes having nothing to do with his spiritual purposes. And yet, when most people think about the first six days of creation, they think about the natural things (i.e. heaven, earth, day, night, sky, man, etc.). God did indeed create these natural objects that can be seen and touched, but he did not do that just for fun or to exercise his creative powers. He had definite spiritual purposes for everything he created.

A very brief summary of those purposes is that God created the entire natural world, including man, to bring praise, honor and glory to himself. If that is true for God and everything he created in the six days of creation, then it is also true for us in every day of our existence — not just the Sabbath day. We know this to be true from his statement that God made man in his image. Obviously God did not mean that man was made in the physical image of God because God is spirit and man has a physical body. What is meant by being created in God’s image is that we are made in his character.

Looking at God’s spiritual handiwork in creation, we assume that part of his character is the will and power to create things that can be seen and touched ( (i.e. heaven, earth, day, night, sky, man, etc.). But this is a wrong assumption because God, being spirit, prefers to emphasize his creative spiritual work. This is how he conforms people to his spiritual image.

Thus, man has a built-in character tendency to create natural things that will bring praise, honor and glory to himself from those who will observe the things he has created. Furthermore, man has the will and ability to create all kinds of physical things, including religion, just as God has the will and ability to create spiritual things (i. e. New Covenant disciples). Man has limits that God does not have on what he can create, but we only need to look at the history of man and the many religions he has created to see that he has fulfilled that part of God’s character quite well. And we don’t need to look far to find examples of people who create things, even good things, in order to earn praise, glory and income for themselves.

That ability to create, however, has some downsides as well as upsides. Just as God created natural things to reflect his glory to the world, men have a tendency to create natural things for their own glory. God allows a certain amount of glory to accrue to men for their creations but he does put limits on the amount of glory they may receive. Those limits apply when it comes to religious activities for which God says he will share his glory with no man. Thus, when men use their creative ability to gain glory for themselves through religious activities in which they promote themselves. That is when they come into conflict with God.

SEVENTH DAY SCRIPTURES
All religion pretends to be about God or gods. The basic idea of religion is to recognize, honor and serve gods so that life will go well for people. People give natural things to their gods so that their gods will give good, natural things back to the people. Sacrifices, tithes and worship are basically offerings given to gods in exchange for favors (e.g. rain, protection, health, income, etc.) that will make life a little easier. That is how it works in the world of religion, but that is not how it works with God.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: The majority of this web site is devoted to identification of scriptures that tell us what God does and does not want from people. A major piece that presents this theme is Commercial Religion.

Although God is spirit, he has created, and continues to create, in the natural realm in ways that are designed to bring him glory. Man, who is both spirit and natural (i.e. flesh), however, functions best in the natural world. His creations take natural materials and objects and reshape them for his purposes. Because that is what he was created to do, likes to do and knows how to do, man has applied his creative skills in all kinds of works, including religion. The problem is, however, that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob does not want, nor does he need, nor is he influenced by mans creative abilities or works — especially creative religious works. God just does not traffic in material religious works. What God does recognize and what he does desire, however, is the spiritual stuff of the heart that cannot be seen, touched or manipulated.

God did say to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy, but it would be wrong for us to think that we should think that we should not keep the other days of the week holy because he did not command us to do that in so many words. We need to look, therefore, for where he said that in less clear terms.

The Fourth Commandment is one place where God says that everything we do should be holy. That is why the actual commandment is to “remember the Sabbath”. God had already given detailed instructions about observing the Sabbath in these scriptures:

Exodus 12:15-16 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; on the first day you shall put away leaven out of your houses, for if any one eats what is leavened, from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 On the first day you shall hold a holy assembly, and on the seventh day a holy assembly; no work shall be done on those days; but what every one must eat, that only may be prepared by you.

COMMENTARY:

Exodus 13:3-10 And Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage, for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place; no leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 This day you are to go forth, in the month of Abib. 5 And when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Hivites, and the Jeb’usites, which he swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days; no leavened bread shall be seen with you, and no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory. 8 And you shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the LORD may be in your mouth; for with a strong hand the LORD has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this ordinance at its appointed time from year to year.

COMMENTARY:

Exodus 16:1-6 They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the people of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, 3 and said to them, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, “At evening you shall know that it was the LORD who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

COMMENTARY:

Exodus 16:7-35 and in the morning you shall see the glory of the LORD, because he has heard your murmurings against the LORD. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Gather of it, every man of you, as much as he can eat; you shall take an omer apiece, according to the number of the persons whom each of you has in his tent.'” 17 And the people of Israel did so; they gathered, some more, some less. 18 But when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; each gathered according to what he could eat. 19 And Moses said to them, “Let no man leave any of it till the morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and became foul; and Moses was angry with them. 21 Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted. 22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers apiece; and when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 he said to them, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay by to be kept till the morning.'” 24 So they laid it by till the morning, as Moses bade them; and it did not become foul, and there were no worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.” 27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they found none. 28 And the LORD said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! The LORD has given you the sabbath, therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days; remain every man of you in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day. 31 Now the house of Israel called its name manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey. 32 And Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Let an omer of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.'” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations.” 34 As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the testimony, to be kept. 35 And the people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land; they ate the manna, till they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

COMMENTARY: See Manna.

A SPIRITUAL CONDITION
Best you can, try to reorient your mind away from thinking about sabbath as a literal day of rest and try thinking about the sabbath as a spiritual condition that equates with the Promised Land.
