Even people who are not religious can accept that someone is able to anticipate or predict future events. In religion, however, prophets are wrongly considered to have a unique spiritual gift that equips them to receive insights about future events directly from God. The truth is that whatever prophets think they know about the future comes from the evil imaginations of their hearts — not from God. These so-called prophecies entertain religious people but distract from God’s idea of what true prophecy is: Speaking/teaching God’s words on God’s behalf.

Speaking on God’s behalf is what Jesus did and it is what other Biblical prophets sent by God did. Such people are false prophets — not true prophets.

DIFFERENT VIEW OF PROPHECY
For Jews and Christians, the most vivid images of prophets derive from Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and other prophetic writers of the Old Testament. Christians, of course, add Jesus to the list of prophets while also assigning to him other supernatural qualities that distinguish him from all other prophets.

Despite widespread affirmation of the role of prophets in the Bible, it is a curious fact that, except for prophecies regarding the Messiah, neither Jews nor Christians pay any real attention to most of what prophets have to say. Jews focus on scriptures that frame expectations about the coming Messiah, while Christians relish prophesies that anticipate either the first or second coming of a Messiah. Beyond these narrow views, warnings of the prophets are generally ignored.

These very different perspectives prove that prophecy is grossly misunderstood by both Jews and Christians. Both religions affirm the function of prophets and the validity of their prophecies, but, because they do not understand the symbolism of the prophecies, they do not pay attention to prophetic warnings that speak of their personal spiritual lives. Thus they deny what God says about all scripture being useful for training in personal righteousness.

Furthermore, they are unable to discern between false prophets and true prophets. This is predictable in Old/First Covenant religions that accumulate their various doctrines from the literal interpretations of scripture offered by many different religious leaders. However, failure to discern does not happen when the spirit of God speaks through the spirit of God to New Covenant disciples.

A SPECIAL PROPHET
Since the concept of “Messiah” is an important feature of both Judaism and Christianity, and since a Messiah is generally regarded as a prophet of the highest order, it is instructive to look at a genuine Messiah as a model of a true prophet.

STUDY TIP: See Messiahs and Messianic Prophecy for more understanding of Messiahs.

Many scriptures supply the clues needed to establish the identity of a Messiah. But, the problem is that they do not see evil as God sees it. Nor do they see idols and idolatry like God sees them.

For man, evil is associated with all kinds of immoral, malevolent behavior perpetrated by evil spirits (i.e. satan, demons) who work their will in and through godless people. And idols are typically thought of as physical creations of wood and stone. But for God, evil is a general term used to describe the sin of religion, and idols are human religious teachers who function as false prophets in their own little kingdoms. He has simply borrowed the term to communicate how he feels about religion so that we can begin to understand how objectionable religion is to him.

God has done the same thing regarding prophecy. Prophecy has a culturally accepted meaning in human terms but a different, spiritual meaning for God. Again, he has borrowed the human word to represent a spiritual concept. He uses the human term/word to symbolically represent the spiritual term. It is an example of how God applies the “first the natural and then the spiritual” principle.

This principle poses a constant challenge for people who read the Bible. The Bible is typically called the “holy” Bible. This label communicates the idea that every word in the Bible is holy because it was spoken by God. This is wrong thinking. The Bible is man’s creation and is therefore not fully trustworthy. In fact, parts of the Bible are holy and parts are profane.

It is a challenge to know what is holy and what is profane. That is why God has given us warnings about discerning between good and evil which the Bible also calls clean and unclean food.

STUDY TIP: See Bread, Food and Wine for an extensive discussion of clean and unclean food. They reinterpret the literal Bible to teach the spiritual meaning of the Bible. They are trees of life whose words are good, spiritual food for religious people who have been eating evil, soulish food served by false prophets.

Applying these understandings of the prophetic function, it must be said that all religious leaders in Judaism and Christianity are prophets in the true Biblical sense. If they set themselves apart from others as authorities on Biblical interpretation, they are prophets. It does not matter if they preach, write, or sing songs about God. They are all prophets in the Biblical sense. But the real question is this: Are they true prophets or false prophets.

Most religious leaders will not self-identify as prophets, but that does not change the fact that they function as prophets in God’s view. The significance of this, of course, is that all religious leaders (e.g. pastors, priests, bishops, apostles, teachers, writers, rabbis, musicians, etc.) who presume to interpret the Bible and report their findings to followers/listeners/readers satisfy the Biblical definition of prophet — even if they never presume to make a prophetic, “thus saith the Lord” pronouncement/prediction regarding the near or far future. And because they are prophets in God’s eyes, all of God’s many warnings to prophets apply to them. True prophets do indeed give warning of judgment for people who do not repent of the sin of religion, and they create a picture what life will be like if they do not repent But these prophecies are all designed to train people in personal righteousness today. They are not matters to ponder or worry about for some unknown future time.

We see the opposite of this here and now, personal application of prophecy in Charismatic Christianity where so-called, modern day prophets are imagined to hear from God about current conditions (i.e. words of knowledge and words of wisdom) that apply to individuals, churches, and coming events that affect select people in the past or in the future. In some super-religious circles these kinds of prophecies are highly regarded even though they are so broad and general that their validity can never be proven by observation. Nevertheless, prophecy is big business in the world of Charismatic and Pentecostal religion where many books, videos, ministries and conferences devoted to prophecy attract eager followers who willingly finance religious organizations with donations.

Beyond these commercial, exhibitionist examples of prophecy, there is a prevailing sense that whatever Biblical prophets had to say applied only to their contemporaries or to people who will live in some unknown, future time when prophecy will be fulfilled. For lack of understanding about God’s view of time and how he uses natural things to represent spiritual truth, and for lack of the ability to interpret scripture symbolically instead of literally, no one applies prophetic warnings to themselves in present time. Thus, it is impossible to find preaching — in either Judaism or Christianity — that interprets Biblical prophecy in terms of the two major themes of all prophetic books: destroying nations and tearing down idols and high places.

It is fair to say, therefore, that Biblical prophets are grossly misunderstood. Most people think they know that the job of a prophet is to foretell the future, but this notion is another example where we would say that “the greater the agreement, the greater the error in understanding.” Just because people agree on the function of a prophet does not guarantee that they are right in their understanding.

Despite the lack of a right understanding of the prophetic role, it is good to review what the conventional wisdom reports about prophets and prophecy. We are making an exception to this rule in the following article by Art Katz.

We do not know Mr. Katz and have not read anything else he has written nor attended any meetings where he has spoken. All we know about him is what we find in the article below which we understand is the entire text of the first chapter of his book The Prophetic Call.

We offer this article for our readers’ consideration because it appears to be an excellent summary of a true prophet’s character, what he/she does and how they do it. We make no recommendations about the article, the book, or Mr. Katz, except to say that, he has captured much of what it means to function as a Biblical prophet. As we always do when referring readers to the writings of others, we strongly recommend using great discernment when reading.

The Prophetic Function
By Art Katz

The quintessential definition of the prophetic call is given to Jeremiah at the inception of his ministry:

The prophet’s purpose is singly and jealously the Father’s will. He restores lost vision of a kind that energizes the people of God, especially in crisis times when despair needs to be turned to hope—having initially been stripped of false hopes by the prophet himself. He does not balk at having to be cruel before he can be kind. A man who can bring the necessary but painful, cruel word that must come in order to build is not unloving but very love itself. In a word the prophet brings the ‘moment of truth’. Standing in the counsel of the Lord he is able to perceive error and state boldly and unequivocally the requisite truth though it be utterly at variance with the consensus being demonstrated.

The prophetic task is to restore to men who have lost it, the biblical mentality and the biblical view of things that are unchanging in God’s sight. He conveys the view of God particularly to a people who are unwilling to hear it. If the prophetic word is critical to bringing an alignment of God’s people with His own view, then the kind of word that is brought by the prophets is the ultimate issue. Where there are authentic prophets who are willing to bring the unwelcome word, so will there also be a plenitude of popular false prophets who bring the false word of comfort and who say, “Peace, peace” when there is no peace.

A prophet does not major in minors. Out of a consummate jealousy for the glory of God, he sets forth the ultimate purposes of God in such a way as to obtain the sacrifices of his hearers to fulfill it. It is not enough just to set forth what God’s program is, but to set it forth in such a way that he has won the willingness of the hearers to be participant in obtaining the ultimate and eternal purposes of God— as sacrifice. That is where the prophetic word is more than the word of explanation. It does not just explain what the eternal purposes of God are, but he communicates it in such a way as to win the commitment of his hearers to the sacrifice necessary to fulfill them. That takes more than explanation. The prophet epitomizes the suffering that such an adherence evokes. In other words, those who are going to embrace the view that he is presenting are opening themselves to suffering. The prophet, therefore, who is inviting them to that suffering has himself in some sense to exhibit it and give the evidence that this is God’s way and that the cross is central to the faith. He makes clear to his hearers that persecution, if not martyrdom, is intrinsic to a faith of this kind—and wins their willingness. It is one thing to establish that the cross, persecution and martyrdom are intrinsic to the faith, but to win the hearer’s consecration to that call is an extraordinary stroke that requires the authority and anointing of those who bear His word. That is the prophetic task. We are not bringing information, but rather calling men to ultimate, sacrificial things and that is why that kind of a word will always be resisted.

The prophet announces and projects the impending end of this world in apocalyptic fury and judgment, sufficient to birth the longing for a new heaven and a new earth in which there is righteousness. He not only brings to the awareness of the hearer that the world that they have celebrated is under judgment and is intended for destruction, which means it will destroy a lot of where their own heart is, but he also births a longing for the thing that comes down from above and which will replace this present age.

A prophet is a man of the word who abhors lightness while deeply respecting and guarding the sanctity of language and its meaning from abuse and cheapening. He is not, therefore, always your enjoyable household guest and is not good for easy conversation and small talk. He guards his mouth because he knows the sanctity of words and will not, therefore, give himself to frequent speaking as it debases the currency of words. There is with him a history of waiting and silences.

A prophet shuns the distinctions and honors that men confer. These things bring a certain aura of prestige and eminence and weight, but the prophetic man, in order to be true to God is the ‘wilderness’ prophet. Wilderness does not just mean physical isolation, but a conscious and willful separation from the kinds of things that are calculated to compromise. He does not effect any kind of prophetic outward ‘appearance’ to indicate his office. He is unprepossessing in appearance and demeanor and despises what is showy, sensational or bizarre. A prophet is intent on turning men to God and not to himself.

This calling is given and is not something that we ourselves summon or take for ourselves, but if we have it, then we need to know that God is going to work us over, again and again, in order to ensure that it is His word that comes forth and not our own.

Even though Mr. Katz has a good understanding of the function and attitude of a prophet, it must be said that he is still an Old/First Covenant religionist who interprets the Bible literally. We know this from the fact that in publishing and selling a religious book he is engaged in commercial religion.

New Covenant prophets do not sell truth. They may occasionally speak of repentance from other kinds of sins (e.g. sex, drugs, greed, alcohol, etc.), but they will never speak repentance for practicing the sin of religion.

How could prophets preach against religion? Why would they preach against religion? Prophets (e.g. pastors, priests, evangelists, rabbis, writers, etc.) are fixtures in the Old/First Covenant institutional religion system that characterizes Judaism and Christianity. If they taught people how to hear God’s voice, they would be out of a job. If they would preach repentance from practicing religion, they would first need to preach to themselves. They would offend everyone who supports them in their public ministries. They would lose their lucrative positions and all the praise they receive from their followers who support them financially and with praise.

TRUE PROPHETS ARE ANGELS
Angels are messengers, and prophets are messengers.
