Religious leaders convince lazy religionists that they (i.e. the religious leaders) know everything worth knowing about God. Religious leaders) convince their followers that they will learn everything they need to know about God if they will come to their religious services, listen to sermons, read their books, buy their music, and pay a price called a tithe or offering. It is a commercial transaction in which knowledge of God is dispensed in exchanged for money.

The ones who teach are false prophets, and the ones who listen to their teachings are deceived because they listen to the voices of false prophets — not to God’s spoken voice. When false prophets reduce God to simple sermons, books or songs, they totally miss the mystery and depth of God that is available only to people who listen to his voice.

STUDY TIP: Only New Covenant disciples are able to interpret the mysteries and secrets hidden in the symbolic language of the Bible. Religious people who are hungry to know more about God, but unable to hear his voice, eat up this unclean food thinking that their leaders are anointed with special knowledge and insights that are not available to them. Religious people consume the words (i.e. teachings and writings) of false prophets thinking that doing so makes them righteous. They wrongly believe that taking human words into the human mind is the same as hearing God’s spoken voice in the heart. Therefore, they do not realize that they are actually sinning by eating the unclean food served to them by trees of knowledge of good and evil.

Religious leaders tend to ignore most mysteries because they don’t understand them and can’t explain them. All religious people think that if they understand a few basic doctrines and practice their religion more or less faithfully they will be right with God. For them, understanding mysteries is optional and not all that important. It may not be important to them, but we know that understanding is important to God because he has made all scripture available for training in righteousness.

Failure to seek understanding about mysteries is an indicator of the way people feel about God. They are content with knowledge that God is love and that he loves them, but anything beyond that is optional. Failure to seek understanding also says much about the desire to be righteous.

Knowledge about God exists in Biblical mysteries and symbolism — not in simplified doctrines deduced from literal interpretations of the Bible. People who seek to understand mysteries show that they hunger and thirst for righteousness. People who vigorously ask, seek and knock for understanding of mysteries show that they love God with their heart, mind soul and strength. All the rest are just religious.

We may rightly conclude from all the mysterious, symbolic language of the Bible and the mysteries that surround God are puzzles to be solved. And from the fact that there are so many religions, we may rightly conclude that none of these religions have solved the puzzle and that their love for God is lukewarm.

Religious people who depend on religious leaders to explain mysteries will never come to understanding of God and his ways. As long as they trust false prophets to teach them about God, God denies understanding because they willfully and ignorantly insert an idol (i.e. teacher) between themselves and God instead of listening to God’s voice. In God’s eyes these religious leaders are idols and the people who listen to them are idolaters.

STUDY TIP: See Religion is Idolatry, Religion is the Kingdom of False Prophets and this link about adultery and prostitution for more about how God sees the relationship between religious leaders and followers.

Also see Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 1.

One of the first indications of God’s mysterious character is found in his revelation of himself to Moses and the Israelites in a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire. These images symbolize his mysterious, spiritual qualities which are only observable with spiritual eyes and are not observable with natural eyes or available through human understanding.

Because we are able to gain some limited understanding of the Bible through literal interpretation, we think we understand God and the Bible. But, because God works in mysterious ways, it is not well understood that this level of understanding is based exclusively on human wisdom of natural words written by men and spoken by men. It is not based on spiritual understanding that is available only to New Covenant disciples (i.e. people taught by the spirit of God).

As further evidence that the Bible is mysterious and hard to understand, we observe the fact of many religious denominations that all claim to worship the same God. If the Bible were simple and universally understandable, there would be no need for so many denominations to establish different doctrines and create distinctive worship practices. Moreover, there would not be two religions (i.e. Jews and Christians) that claim to love and serve the same God.

What happens, it seems, is that in their literal interpretations of the Bible, people find a unique scripture or two that they think they understand and that logically seems to represent God. Then they teach and preach that doctrine and find others who agree that it seems true. Before you know it, a movement, a denomination and church is formed. What they have created, however, is only a golden calf, a religion made by man. It is not God. It is man’s limited conception of God based on a few select scriptures which have been literally interpreted — but not spiritually discerned.

Once the teaching of those select doctrines catches on, other churches are formed around a common belief regarding those select doctrines. If many churches subscribe to that teaching, there is eventually enough critical mass for a denomination.

While this movement is gaining momentum, preaching and programs tend to affirm the select scriptures that support the doctrines on which the denomination is based. Other scriptures that do not support those doctrines are ignored at best, and rejected at worst.

The scriptures that are ignored or rejected remain in the category of “mystery” because no one in the denomination bothers to study them to gain understanding about the mystery. They are content with the religion they have created and have no motivation to ask, seek and knock so they might understand the wisdom of God that is hidden in the mysteries. Furthermore, denominational leaders do not encourage denominational adherents to study those scriptures either. As a result, everyone in the movement remains ignorant about the mysteries.

STUDY TIP: Human wisdom is found in the literal interpretation of the Bible. In fact, there are so many mysterious, impossible to understand scriptures, there would not be much left of the Bible if they were all removed.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: See Literal or Symbolic Interpretation Part 2 for discussion of issues related to interpreting Biblical mysteries.

The result of the inability to understand Biblical mysteries is that the doctrines religious leaders (i.e. false prophets) frame and promote are flawed because they have only part of the picture of God and his ways. Doctrines and teachings are flawed because religious leaders have erroneously simplified Biblical truths from a few select scriptures that they can explain in natural terms. They persuasively attract gullible followers who don’t know any better than to interpret the Bible literally and are impressed with the smooth speech of anyone who can convince them that they understand God’s written word. They present a small view of a very big God. And it all happens because they read the Bible for literal understanding only, without digging for God’s symbolic intent that reveals the depths of his character. In their search for simplicity they have effectively eliminated the mystery of God and reduced him to something people can understand with little or no effort.

This is lazy, irresponsible scholarship that places leaders in danger of correction by God. Because of their unwillingness to search out the mysteries of God and their eagerness to establish a movement and make a name for themselves, they have led people astray. God has warned leaders about doing this in James 3 and Matthew 23:1-15. Of course this type of teaching is readily accepted by rank and file denominational adherents because they are lazy scholars also and all too willing to accept the teaching of someone who preaches/teaches with conviction and uses select scriptures to support his/her teaching.

How much better off these teachers and students would have been if they had been zealous to understand God’s mysteries and willing to make the effort to search out the truth.

GOD IS IN THE DETAILS
There is a common saying that says “the devil is in the details.” This is a lie that is accepted by both believers and nonbelievers. For people who call themselves Jews or Christians, this is a lie that carries great consequence if they accept it as truth and act according to that perceived truth.

The real truth is that God is in the details. The details are the mysteries of God hidden in the Bible. Failure to search out the mysteries results in beliefs that are faulty because they are based only on a few scriptures that cannot be understood well when considered alone. All scripture must be taken in context of the entire Bible. There is great danger of being misled if you isolate a scripture and act on it without making a serious effort to reconcile it with other scriptures that relate to it. If God is one, then the scriptures that represent him are also a unified piece of work. They cannot be fractured and separated without offending God by misrepresenting him.

Of course that is a lot of work. Indeed there are deep mysteries in the Bible. But that mysteries exist does not mean that they cannot be understood. Consider the following verses:

Deuteronomy 30:1-10: “And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you, 2 and return to the LORD your God, you and your children, and obey his voice in all that I command you this day, with all your heart and with all your soul; 3 then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes, and have compassion upon you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. 4 If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there he will fetch you; 5 and the LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, that you may possess it; and he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. 6 And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. 7 And the LORD your God will put all these curses upon your foes and enemies who persecuted you. 8 And you shall again obey the voice of the LORD, and keep all his commandments which I command you this day. 9 The LORD your God will make you abundantly prosperous in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground; for the LORD will again take delight in prospering you, as he took delight in your fathers, 10 if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Psalms 19:1-13: To the choirmaster. When we come to those difficult things that tax our comprehension, we lose faith in “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness”. We say, in effect, “It’s too deep for me! I will move on until I come to something I can understand with my natural mind.” We don’t get the inspiration or revelation that we want, so we quit trying.

Sadly, churches don’t help us with this dilemma. In fact they can’t help because they have framed their whole belief system on a few select scriptures and related doctrines that effectively rule out consideration all scriptures that fall into the “mysterious” category. Furthermore, if churches would teach how to search out the mysteries, they would be cutting their financial throats. They have created a dependency in people who come back to them weekly for a few little tidbits of knowledge that pastors have gleaned from the scriptures that are accepted within their denomination’s belief system. There is no incentive for pastors to teach people how to learn the hard stuff that they themselves do not even know.

Fortunately, God has confirmed the fact of the mysteries very clearly for us and he has made it very clear that he wants to reveal them to his people. This link will take you to a list of scriptures with the word mystery in the KJV of the New Covenant. And this link will take you to the definition of the Greek word “musterion” which is translated “mystery” in most versions of the Bible. Knowing that He knows that it is mysterious should help us avoid shaming ourselves for our inability to understand.

DON’T SETTLE FOR A SIMPLE GOD
So now we know that God knows how difficult the Bible is for us to understand. Just knowing that is not much comfort, however, if we remain confused, perplexed and ignorant. Worse yet, the one thing we do understand is that he intentionally made it difficult. It seems like a kind of a cruel trick for God to play on his people to make understanding so difficult. How could he expect us to be holy and follow all his commandments if he makes it so difficult to understand? That awareness does not do much to increase our trust in Him. Actually, it tends to make us a little wary of a god who would make it all so hard.

Nevertheless, that is the way it is. We can either accept that God intentionally made it difficult for us to learn his mysteries, or we can ignore the hard stuff and settle for the easy stuff. If you settle for the easy stuff, however, you miss a major portion of who God is and what he wants you to learn about him and about you. That is not what we would call devotion. That is not what we would call trust. Skipping the hard stuff does not demonstrate trust that God will guide you to the truth that exists in the hard stuff. Skipping the hard stuff only reflects discouragement and weak faith. Think about that next time you come to a scripture that taxes your understanding.

We (most of you and us) sincerely want to believe and understand. We spend hours reading the Bible and books and going to church and movies and conferences and all those other things that feed our desire to know God better. We even pay good money, lots of money, to learn some little tidbit that will increase our understanding.

But, despite all our efforts and money, we remain ignorant, confused, perplexed and immature. The mystery of it all eludes us because we do not have spiritual eyes and ears. For most of us (you and us) there remains hundreds, maybe thousands, of passages that seem contradictory, nonsensical, and, dare we say “ungodly’.

We are fed, but we are still not satisfied. Sooner or later we give up trying. We have tried so hard. but learned so little, that it does not seem worth the effort to try anymore. And it appears that others are in no better shape. So we figure that this is as good as it gets and settle into a dull, lifeless, religious routine. It ain’t great, but we never hear that anyone else is getting any breakthroughs regarding the mysteries either, so we conclude that this must be what God has in mind for His people. People who have studied, and even been to seminary keep teaching from the same scriptures (typically New Testament) so we come to accept that New Testament is all we really need to know in order to be a good Christian. And they never venture into those mysterious areas to explain deep spiritual truths.

Christians are stuck in a New Testament rut (with occasional ventures into Psalms, Proverbs and major prophets, and never into Leviticus or Numbers). Jews, on the other hand, are stuck in an Old Testament rut that keeps them from New Testament scriptures that explain it. Both religions comfort themselves with the knowledge that they are in good company and that they belong to a good, Bible-teaching church/synagogue. But the nagging awareness remains that God said “all scripture is God breathed useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness“, and neither religion studies the whole Bible.

Unable to understand the whole Bible in all of its mystery, we slip into ambivalence about nearly everything that God says. We think we get the part about church or the Sabbath, so belonging to a “good, Bible teaching congregation” becomes the most important thing for us. And a high priority is put on “having a “personal relationship” with God, especially in an emotional worship experience, so we don’t want to miss that on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Thus “church” and “worship” become euphemisms for “fearing God“, and ambivalence descends into dull, lifeless religion. It is a sad state of affairs that results, at least in part, from the “one literal meaning” belief that denies the mystery of it all.

No wonder so many people are dissatisfied with church and leaving it. We want to be careful to avoid simplistic answers as to why people are leaving church. Nevertheless, we will offer an opinion that one plausible reason is the tendency to think that the mystery cannot be solved while we are physically alive on earth. We agree with Job that “God is beyond our understanding” and hold out hope that it will all be revealed to us when we die, go to heaven and see God face to face. Then, finally, the mysteries will be revealed. In a certain sense this is true. But we need to reconcile that thinking with “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.” And this produces even more ambivalence and uncertainty. We don’t understand because we haven’t tried to uncover the mystery of it.

MYSTERIES REVEALED, EXPLAINED
The restless, ambivalent church is in a predicament. It says, “I believe” on the one hand, but does not trust God for understanding of difficult scriptures on the other. This predicament fits very well the definition of a double-minded man who should not expect to receive anything when he encounters a test or a trial. Here is how this scripture should be interpreted:

The coming of Christ is not a future, eschatological event. It is a here and now event. It happens every time we die to self and the life of Christ is created in us. The life of Christ is God’s spiritual laws written on our hearts.

This is the “mystery” of Christ. Thus, if you are “in Christ” the Messiah has come and his spirit (i.e. God’s spiritual laws) lives in you. What that means is that God’s laws are written on your heart just like God’s laws were written on Jesus’ heart.

When God’s laws are written on your heart, you have the ability to understand the spiritual symbolism of the literal words of the bible. Rather, the controlling conditions for accessing truth are our belief that it will come and our willingness to eagerly search for truth as God commands us to do in “ask, seek knock and it will be opened to you.“

We have in “ask, seek knock and it will be opened to you.” a promise that we should not want to ignore. This verse contains a promise that God will reveal truth to us “here and now” not just at some future time.

If we do not desire that truth enough to ask, seek and knock for it today, and seriously Study for it today, we effectively say that the truth is not that important to us. And if it is not important to us, why would should we expect God to answer our questions about the meaning of difficult scriptures? If we are content with the limited knowledge we have about God, he respects our contentment and leaves us in the dark about the his deep mysteries.

The issue is this: Do we want to be Warriors for God? If we do, we will be diligently asking, seeking and knocking to unlock the mysteries of the Bible.

Similarly, if we not learn how to hear God’s voice so that we can understand and apply the symbolism to our lives, we do not really fear God. Fearing God is strongly associated with obeying His commandments. Ask, seek and knock is one of those commandments.

Matthew 13:9-16 10 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to him who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

COMMENTARY: If you call yourself a disciple of Jesus, you have the same potential to know the secrets of the kingdom that the disciples in the passage had. This scripture makes it clear that some get it (the secrets) and some do not. It also says that the more you understand, the more understanding you will be given. Conversely, it says that those who do not get it will lose what they already have. This is a strong exhortation to be among those who get it.

Matthew 13:35 RSV 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”

COMMENTARY: This is Jesus talking. He is saying that His parables will reveal the answers to the mysteries of God that have been confounding people forever. You can either take Jesus at His word about this or not. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.

COMMENTARY: Jesus again says that the mysteries will be revealed. The context is here and now — not after we die.

Mark 4:21-25 22 For there is nothing hid, except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. 23 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.” 24 And he said to them, “Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. 25 For to him who has will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

COMMENTARY: It is very clear from this scripture that secret, hidden things will be exposed. There Is a condition, however, for God exposing the truth: The one who hears/receives the truth must act on it. When God says “let him hear”, He means that we should demonstrate that we have really heard by obeying what we have heard. The ultimate proof that we have heard lies in the willingness to share what we have heard with others. This is what God means by loving our neighbors as ourselves.

God throws in a little incentive for obedience. That is if you share only a little of what you hear God say with others, you will receive only a little revelation about the secrets. Alternatively, if you are faithful to share every truth that God reveals to you, you will receive much more truth. That is what God means by “measure you give and measure you get”. And, if you do share nothing of the truth God gives to you, whatever truth you thought you had will be taken away. So, in a very real sense we control how much revelation we receive by the effort we make to understand and share the revelation we do receive. This is such an important principle to God that he calls it the second great commandment.

New Covenant scriptures are somewhat easier to understand than First Covenant scriptures, but not a lot easier because Jesus spoke in parables. But the apostles could be similarly mysterious in their writings. Here are a couple of examples:

2-Peter 3:14-17 NIV 4 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.

COMMENTARY: Here Peter makes clear that failure to understand Paul’s scriptures cause destruction for ignorant, unstable people. In fact, Peter says that these same people also distort First Covenant scriptures also. He gives a clear warning to be on guard (regarding your understanding of all hard to understand scriptures) so that you are not deceived by the wrong interpretations of scriptures by men who do not know and do not practice the Law.

Colossians 1:21-29 21 And you, who once were estranged and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him, 23 provided that you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which has been preached to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister. 24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the divine office which was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now made manifest to his saints. 27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, striving with all the energy which he mightily inspires within me.

COMMENTARY: This scripture not only testifies that the mystery exists, but it also explain what the mystery is: Christ in us.

This is nothing more and nothing less than the fulfillment of the New Covenant: The Law is written on our hearts. Jesus cannot be separated from the Law. As the living word became flesh (John 1:1-14) and dwelt in us, the Law is written on our hearts. In short, the mystery is that the life of Christ is established in us when the Law is written on our hearts.

The difficulty we have in understanding this mystery is that our understanding of Jesus becoming flesh is typically limited to the reality that Jesus was born with an earthly body. While that is true, it is not as important as the truth that Jesus inhabits our bodies (at least to some degree). This mystery is discussed in depth in New Covenant.

Finally, here is the scripture that turned us on to the fact of God hiding mysteries for his people to discover:

Proverbs 25:2 RSV It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.

COMMENTARY: Saying that it is to the glory of kings to search out things affirms that secrets/mysteries can be searched out successfully. However, this applies only when you carry the status of king.

Obviously a king in this scripture does not refer to royalty as we understand it today. Actually, as a believer you must consider yourself as a king because believers have spiritual authority like kings. Jesus carried the status of prophet, priest and king. Followers of Jesus, therefore, carry the same status.

This scripture implies that if you are not searching out secrets and mysteries are obviously not a king because you are not behaving like a king. And it you do not behave like a king, you bring into serious doubt any claims you might make about being a follower of Jesus.

Hopefully these scriptures convince readers that the mysteries of the Bible will be revealed here and now to those who ask and listen for wisdom from God’s voice and who stop seeking for truth about God from false prophets. If you are still not quite convinced that God has given you the ability to uncover mysteries, then perhaps the scriptures found in this link will convince you. If not, then you will just have to wait until you get to the point that you no longer trust in human interpretations of the Bible and put your trust in God for understanding.

The way we see it is that, all things considered, we have no reason to be ashamed if we find the Bible difficult to understand. After all, God made it that way. We do have reason for shame, however, if we do not make the effort to understand. It is a test to see how much we love Him and trust Him. If we are content with the limited picture of God based on literal Bible interpretations that religion teaches, instead of listening for his voice to teach us, we fail the test.

GOD DIDN’T MAKE KNOWING HIM EASY What God has to say regarding symbolic meanings of the Bible may be summarized in two words: mystery and secrets.
