We will first look at the world’s definition.

Clifford Geertz, an anthropologist described it in “Religion as a Cultural System,” in Anthropological Approaches to the Study of Religion, ed. M. Banton (London: Tavistock, 1966):

(1) a system of symbols which acts to
(2) establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by
(3) formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and
(4) clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that
(5) the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic

This is a technical, academic description of religion that begins to make sense only when we apply it to our own religious experiences. Having done that, we offer the following summary paraphrase of Geertz’s five points:

Religion is a system of physical, man-made symbols (e.g. Christian Cross, Star of David, clothing, jewelry, buildings, leaders, objects, traditions, ceremonies, festivals, sacraments, etc.)

… to which people form long-lasting, powerful, emotional affections,

… that motivate them to organize the symbols into a system of corporate and religious laws,

… that will successfully preserve and advance the religion in ways that are very believable because they have an appearance of Godliness.

We also offer this short, non-technical, somewhat cynical, man-on-the-street definition of all kinds of religion:

Religion, specifically Judaism and Christianity, is what Jews and Christians do to fulfill their literal interpretation of the Bible.

Religions are sets of unique historical traditions created by men, taught by men and enforced by men.

Religious doctrines and beliefs are based on “hearsay” evidence shared from one generation to another.

Religion is what people do to communicate to other religionists that they are close to God.

AN EXPANDED DEFINITION OF RELIGION
Many readers will be surprised to learn that the words “religion” and “religious” are relatively rare in the Bible — depending on the Bible version. In the King James version, for example, neither religion nor religious can be found in the Old Testament. And they appear only six times in the New Testament. The Greek word “Sebomai” that is translated as both “religion” and “religious” is also translated as “worship” and “devout in four additional New Testament scriptures, bringing the total in the New Testament to ten.

The way we see it, the frequency of the words “religion” and “religious” in the Bible is exceedingly small relative to the use of the words in society and in religious circles within the larger society. As we observe in the dictionary reference to “religion,” the concept of religion has taken on meanings much different from what we find in the Bible. The names of the gods are different, and many of the beliefs and practices are very different, but they all share the features found in the lists above. This means that Jews and Christians have disobeyed God’s commands regarding following the kinds of religious customs that other religions follow. This is one of many good reasons for abandoning religion of any kind.

THE ESSENCE OF RELIGION DOES NOT CHANGE
So, what does God say about religion? He says that his people (i.e. spiritual Israel) must not follow the customs and practices of other nations. It is hard to think of these scriptures about following the customs and practices of other nations (i.e. religions) as commandments from God, but that is exactly what they are.

To fully appreciate these commandments, we must recognize that the reference to “nations” is to religions, — not to sovereign, corporate, political entities. If nations were only corporate, political entities, God would not have warned Israel to avoid following their customs and practices nor would he have punished them for mingling with the nations to learn their practices and serve their gods. He takes this hard position with religions/nations because they are in competition with God for the hearts and minds of people. Thus it can be said that religion is God’s enemy.

It is easy for Christians and Jews in these modern times to dismiss God’s commands about following the customs of other nations. They can accept that Israel might have some tendencies to adopt and replicate features of Egyptian religion into their own religious practices since they were slaves there for over two hundred years. Moreover, it is relatively easy to accept that Israel might have been influenced in some small way by the religious practices of their enemies (i.e. Amorites, Hittites, Per’izzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jeb’usites) as they lived side by side with them in the Promised Land. What is not well understood, however is that ancient Israel and Jews and Christians then, and ever since, have been strongly influenced by those same religious practices.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: God represents adoption of these practices as Harlotry, Prostitution and Adultery. He also represents the potential for religious pollution in warnings about intermarriage with these religious nations.

Jews and Christians cannot accept that they have always heavily borrowed from other religions when forming their own religions. In their religious pride and self-righteousness, Jews and Christians are blind to the fact that they have both added and subtracted from God’s words. This is a clear indication that the leaven of religion has thoroughly infiltrated both religions.

While we must admit that the forms of religion have changed somewhat down through the ages, we must hold to the truth that the principles of religion have not changed. If they had changed, there would be nothing for any generation to learn from scripture. Solomon’s truth that there is nothing new under the sun applies to religion just like it applies to every other aspect of life.

The main point we want to stress here is that religions of all eras have common features (see list above) even though they do not have common beliefs. In other words, the doctrines, rituals, clothing, buildings and history may have different forms, but they are still all religions. And it is religion in all of its many forms that God wants to drive out.

It is very important for Jews and Christians to recognize that their respective religions share these common features with other religions even though God commanded that Israel should not following the customs and practices of other nations (i.e. people.) This command makes sense, of course, only when we recognize that God symbolically uses the terms nations to refer to religious people that were not like Israel. That means that God’s people should not follow any customs that are like the customs of other religions — past or present.

The command to not follow the customs and practices of other religions applies to us today just as it did to ancient Israel. Just like Israel, we live in a hostile religious environment — no matter where we live in the world. And at the time of this writing (2015) it is becoming increasingly hostile for all religions. This fact helps make the point that religion is the enemy of God and his people.

One of the consequences of failing to follow God’s command to not follow the customs of other nations (i.e. religious people) is that their recognizable public identities (i.e. clothing, buildings, habits, etc.) make them visible targets for persecution by other religions. In God’s view, all these visible religious activities are elements of Old/First Covenant religion which emphasizes external appearances while God emphasizes the attitudes of the heart found in New Covenant disciples.

But even New Covenant disciples ((i.e. people born of the spirit) can expect to be persecuted by Old/First Covenant religionists (i.e. people born of the flesh. It will be a different kind of conflict, however, because a man’s enemies will look like friends and family. It is better, however, to give God credit for including these references in the Bible for instruction of the fact that the Defiled Religion practiced by these ancient religions has always existed in one form or another — even into these modern times and even though the form of it has evolved over time.

Readers who are surprised that the Bible is so full of examples of defiled religion may wonder why God talks about it so much. The reason is that he wants his people to learn to distinguish between clean and unclean and good and evil where clean and good are equated with the New Covenant and unclean and evil are equated with the Old/First Covenant. Thus God provides hundreds of examples of good and evil so that his people can learn to recognize counterfeit religion when they see it because they know the truth found in the New Covenant.

In Bible times, Israelites and Jews, of course, were well aware of the forms of counterfeit religions. They had spent several generations in Egypt and were surrounded by religious nations in the Land of Canaan (i.e. the Promised Land). Nevertheless, God saw fit to include detailed instructions about clean and unclean animals, objects and people so that they would learn to distinguish between what is holy and common (i.e. clean and unclean). Contemporary Jews and Christians will also be edified about what is holy and common when they are able to interpret clean and unclean symbolically and not just literally.

It is not an overstatement to say that the literal interpretations of how to treat clean and unclean things are difficult to understand and impossible to apply. And yet, we must consider that these difficult scriptures are not exceptions to what God said about the usefulness of all scripture. It is necessary, therefore, for Jews and Christians to understand the symbolic intent of all those scriptures that deal with clean and unclean regulations.

STUDY TIP: See DISCERN BETWEEN CLEAN AND UNCLEAN, HOLY AND PROFANE for more about clean and unclean.

Understanding the symbolism found in scripture is really quite simple when considered in the context of religion. All references to clean things are to Pure Religion and references to unclean things are to Defiled Religion. How do we know this? We know it from scriptures that connect clean and unclean with holy and common where common is also defined as profane or unholy. In other words, clean things are holy and unclean things are unholy.

Making these distinctions is God’s way of training his people to choose between worldly religious practices and his ways. This is what Leviticus teaches.

RELIGION TODAY
Religion, specifically Christianity, and to a lesser degree Judaism, has been a part of social life in western cultures for so long that almost everyone, including those who are not religious, take it for granted. Some, especially atheist activists, occasionally rise up to purge aspects of religion from the public landscape — especially when religion intersects with government. Nevertheless, physical churches remain scattered throughout our cities and countryside conveying the impression that religion is to be tolerated if not accepted. That idea is reinforced by festivals like Easter and Christmas which are honored in the calendars of all public and private institutions. Those festivals are publicly promoted and tied to commerce in such powerful ways that it is nearly impossible for anyone, including the nonreligious, to avoid being caught up in them in one way or another.

In addition to churches and festivals, there are other signs that religion is affirmed and integrated into the social fabric. Public prayers at government meetings, day of prayer events, citywide evangelism crusades, and Biblical quotations on public buildings all communicate a sense that God is present and highly respected in the American culture. Some even like to say that Americans are God’s chosen people, that America was founded on Christian principles, and that it somehow deserves a special blessing from God because of that history. These are all examples of how strongly Christians, feel about their religion and its rightful — in their opinion — place in the American culture and even in the entire world.

On the surface, all this religious activity would seem to be a good thing for God. And it would be a good thing for him if he wanted his people to represent him to the world as the god of religious people who specialize in ceremonial rituals performed in specialized buildings while speaking specialized languages to select audiences who gather at regular times to practice their unique religious traditions. All those activities are the stuff of religion. But no one seems to know or care if all this religious activity is what God wants.

STUDY TIP: See How God Sees Religion for understanding of what God does not want.

What God does want is found in the Bible, but people have always had difficulty interpreting his ways correctly. That is why religion has so many different forms. Why there are so many different forms (e.g. denominations, rituals, music, sects, ministries, etc.) to Christianity and Judaism is a question no one ever asks. No one seems to wonder how there can be so many different ways to worship the God who has only one book of directions by which his followers should learn about him. An alien visitor might wonder if indeed it is one unique god that people worship or many gods that are called by one name. Still, everyone assumes that this is the way it ought to be because it has always been this way. The power of the assumption is so strong that none of the religious ones doubt that this is the way that God wants it to be.

Even though they claim to believe that the Bible has God’s directions for worshiping him, believers have no trouble reconciling their own unique worship practices with the Bible. They see no need to compare what they do with what God has said. Each branch of Christianity and Judaism has the historical momentum of select theologies and traditions that guide it through political, economic and social change. And if they encounter winds that threaten their institutional stability, they will make adjustments to keep the faithful on board and the keep their religious institutions (e.g. churches, denominations, synagogues, seminaries, colleges, missions, etc.) stable and solvent.

Despite the power of tradition, cultural influences shape religious institutions over time just like they affect nonreligious institutions. None of them want to become extinct or irrelevant for lack of ability to adapt to changing environments. Nothing, not even the Bible, will inhibit religious institutions from changing their worship practices and doctrines to reflect evolving cultures. Basic theologies and worship practices may evolve slowly, but most forms of religion do change when change is necessary to survive in an increasingly competitive religious environment. Some religions grow and others decline as religionists migrate from one religion to another, but overall the population of practicing religionists is shrinking.

STUDY TIP: See God is Calling People Out of Religion for more about the decline of religion.

If religious leaders and followers would bother to study even a little what God says about worship they would learn that the models for worship in both the Old and New Testaments cannot be reconciled with modern worship practices. They accept the Biblical truth that God does not change, but are not willing to integrate that aspect of Godliness into their religious practices. Having made that critical theological concession, there is no impetus or incentive to study what God says about the kind of religion God expects. This life is a preview of the Promised Land which is equated with the New Covenant. What we see introduced in Genesis, therefore, is the first telling of the story that is told again and again in the Bible. It goes like this:

<colgroup>
<col width="30" />
<col width="670" />
<col width="0" /></colgroup>

Man lives in a sinful religious environment.

God intervenes and gives man a new life in a garden of pleasure (i.e. promised land) in which the worship is pure and unadulterated by religious forms or practices of any kind.

God establishes a covenant with man: Eat from the Tree of Life, but do not eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Man breaks the covenant by choosing religion (i.e. Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil) instead of Tree of Life (i.e. New Covenant obedience where the law is written on his heart).

God intervenes again with the following:

forgiveness

exile from the garden

a curse (i.e.religion)

a way of reentering the garden (i.e. dying by encountering the cherubim with their swords).

People escape the power of the curse, die to their efforts to be reconnected to God through religious works, and reenter the garden (i.e.Promised Land, and the New Covenant).

Those who have read the creation story for its symbolic meaning and not just its literal meaning understand that the curse of religion is the real consequence of Adam and Eve’s sin. As long as they ate from the Tree of Life, their job to dress and keep the garden was easy. This life symbolically represents the life of New Covenant disciples. But when they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, life was hard for them (i.e. they toiled in it). This life symbolically represents the life of Old/First Covenant religionists. God made it hard because he did not, and still does not, want his people to live lives that are controlled by the many rules and regulations of religious do’s and do not’s that define each and every religion.

In other words, what God wants is that his people to be free from the curse of religious traditions, rules and regulations (i.e. legalism) that have been conceived by, taught by, and administered by religious leaders. It is in this state of freedom that God’s Spirit can have full reign over the spirit of man so that man can best represent God’s loving character to a lost and hurting world. It only works, however, when God himself writes his laws on the hearts of people and teaches them himself how and when to fulfill those laws in their everyday lives.

UNIQUE RELIGIOUS BRANDS
Lacking awareness of God’s view on interpreting and applying The Law, Christians have made the same mistakes the Israel and the Jews made. They have taken some scriptures and made doctrines (i.e. laws) that define their respective brand of religion. And they have effectively ignored all other aspects of The Law that are hard to understand and/or obey. As each religion goes through this process, it grows or develops a unique brand of religion that includes doctrines that are relatively succinct and doable.

STUDY TIP: See RELIGIOUS ORNAMENTS, CLOTHING AND LABELS, and BREAKING THE LAW for more about religious branding.

By selectively choosing which parts of The Law to obey, however, all Christian sects are deceived about their righteousness. Each sect develops its religious doctrines and refines them so finely that they are all but unassailable (at least in the minds of those who think about such things) because they are based on unique Bible scriptures. But, while building their denominational structures on a few, select Biblical doctrines, they have also developed elaborate doctrinal excuses (loopholes) for ignoring and/or rejecting other Biblical doctrines. Therefore, even though their choice doctrines are based on the Bible, they also miss many other Biblical truths of equal or greater legal value. That renders them “lawless” with respect to the parts they have missed. Since sin is defined as lawlessness, and since failure to obey the whole law is sin, religion by its nature is sin.

Religions people are generally very serious and sincere about what they believe. Thus, they are exceedingly satisfied and confident with the unique standards of righteousness that their religion teaches. They are each so confident that their particular brand of religion is right, that they corporately organize themselves and create distinctive features (doctrines, clothing, buildings, liturgies, publications, etc) to promote themselves and differentiate themselves (i.e. brand) from other brands of religion.

In their own unique ways, each brand evangelizes non-believers and believers from other brands in order to expand their respective numbers and influence. There is real competition for adherents to each brand and the intensity increases as the population of religiously inclined people declines. Recent research shows that religious decline is exactly what is happening in America. Because of this decline, each denomination is fighting for its life. Some appear to be winning, and others appear to be losing, but they are all fighting to preserve their respective traditions and their corporate lives. The result of this process being carried out in a multitude of ways throughout the world is religion.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: This Wikipedia link provides a quick overview of this history.

WHICH IS THE TRUE RELIGION?
Even while religion is in decline, denominations, sects within denominations, ministries, churches and synagogues continue to be formed. In the business of religion, this phenomenon is call church growth. Even within long-established, so-called “mainline” denominations, splits and declining membership are occurring as they identify doctrinal issues which divide believers with strong opinions about such matters. And with each split, the religious landscape gets increasingly confusing. It is confusing and even troubling for those who are insiders, and it is confusing for those who are outsiders. There is no way to reliably discern, based on evidence that is generally available to the public, which is the right or best religion.

Recognizing this religious mess, someone needs to stop and ask the question: Is this what God had in mind?

Well, OK, we have asked the question. And now having done that, we will also answer the question.

And the answer is: No! This is not what God had in mind.

How can we be so sure to make such a strong, declarative statement in speaking for God? We do not presume to speak for God in saying that this is not what He had in mind. We are just interpreting what He has said and applying it to the current situation. Here are some scriptures that speak to this issue:

1-Corinthians 10:15-17: I speak as to sensible men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.

1-Corinthians 12:12-27: 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body–Jews or Greeks, slaves or free–and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the organs in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single organ, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body which seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those parts of the body which we think less honorable we invest with the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior part, 25 that there may be no discord in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.

Romans 12:1-5: I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Galatians 3:16-29: Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. Religious denominations, churches and ministries are nothing less than little kingdoms that people create to make names, earn income for their own selfish purposes, and reign as royalty.

STUDY TIP: See Cities, Kingdoms and Nations. Also see Kings, Queens and Princes.

The reason that people are able to create these kingdoms is that religious people are in the habit of listening to religious leaders. And the reason they listen to religious leaders is that they do not know how to hear God’s spoken voice. If everyone would listen to God’s voice there would be no religion, no denominations, no churches, no ministries. Everyone would worship in spirit and truth and there would be no need for religion.

RELIGION IS NOT WHAT GOD WANTED
Religion in the world with all its various doctrines and denominations and gods is not what God had in mind. Actually, His intent when he chose Israel was to demolish all the existing religious structures that exist in the World of Religion at that time and replace them with a people that worshiped him in spirit and truth. That is why he settled Israel in a Promised Land that was currently occupied by Religious Enemies, Adversaries and Oppressors who occupied religious Cities, Kingdoms and Nations. God’s plan was to evangelize these pagan nations through a Godly nation (i.e. Israel) that represented his name (i.e.character).

God’s biggest problem in accomplishing that goal is that the people (Israel and Christians) he has chosen to do the work of demolishing existing religious structures have been deceived by religion. Either you have a religion created by men and affirmed by traditions, or you have the New Covenant. Your religion may be formal and codified (i.e. written down as a kind of law) as it exists in denominations and movements (e.g. social, psychological, artistic, economic, etc.) of all kinds, or it may be just a philosophy or lifestyle that exists in your head. Whether it is codified or not, if it controls your thinking and your behavior, it is essentially a religion or a collection of religions that you use to give meaning, direction and order to your life.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: This concept of religion obviously goes beyond the conventional idea of a set of beliefs that relates people to a spiritual being (i.e. god) of some kind. It fits better with the expanded view of religion found in this Wikipedia link.

For the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, all religions are the same. It does not matter what its rules and regulations are, it does not matter if it is codified or not. It is all the same to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is all religion that operates in the flesh and it is all contrary to worship in spirit and truth (i.e. the heart).

What God wants for people is that they live in freedom from any and all kinds of religious legalism. What he wants is that all people should be fully submitted to him and not to any philosophy or patterns (i.e. religious laws and doctrines) designed by and administered by people. In God’s view, any such philosophy constitutes another god that is in competition with God for control of people’s hearts and minds. These philosophies can be real or imagined, but they are all gods if they have influence over people. In God’s view, anyone who follows one or more of these other gods is an idolater.

For the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, there is only one alternative for people who practice any kind of religion and the worship of false gods: They must be New Covenant disciples. New Covenant disciples are people who have been delivered from worship of their idols. In short, they have been delivered from religion. Or, in Bible language, they have been delivered from Old/First Covenant religion.

Looking back at the creation story, we see that the New Covenant, is the renewal of the covenant relationship that existed before Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (i.e. Defiled Religion). The New, or more accurately “renewed” covenant was necessary because Adam and Eve, who had the perfect relationship with God, chose to practice religion. It looked good to them so they tried it. But they did it at the cost of their perfect relationship with God (i.e. they died a spiritual death). The New Covenant, therefore, is the spiritual healing that results when man’s relationship to God is restored as prophesied by Isaiah. Here is a rough outline of what happened:

Adam and Eve sinned by eating of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (i.e. they chose the path of Defiled Religion instead of the righteous path of Pure Religion (i.e. The Tree of Life).

God covered (i.e. forgave) Adam and Eve’s sin with the blood of the animal sacrificed to cover their shame.

Ever since Adam and Eve, people have been predisposed to sinning by choosing sin.

In their predisposition to sin by practicing Defiled Religion, people are vulnerable to following blind guides who are only too willing to lead people where they want to go and tell them what they want to hear.

Religious leaders to whom people enslave themselves set standards of righteousness in Defiled Religion practices that people try hard to satisfy.

Even though people are prisoners of the law (i.e. Defiled Religion), they will eventually tire of practicing Defiled Religion because it produces spiritual death in them.

Defiled Religion (i.e. the law) leads people to Pure Religion (i.e. New Covenant) when they repent of working for their salvation through Defiled Religion.

Once they rest (i.e. quit) from practicing Defiled Religion, God opens their spiritual eyes so that they can see more clearly how Defiled Religion produces death and how Pure Religion produces life.

AUTHORS’ NOTE: We are tempted to want to apologize for this very brief overview of the process by which people transition from false, Old Covenant religion to true, New Covenant religion where the law is written on the hearts of people. In our desire to communicate in terms people might be able to understand, we have summarized in eight steps what God used the entire Bible to say. In our defense, however, we felt we needed to lay it out in this abbreviated form to get readers’ attention and forecast the context for the rest of this web site.

What we are trying to say is that religion of any kind is sin. This includes Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The fact that a religion quotes the Bible, or uses God’s name or Jesus’ name does not guarantee righteousness. In both the Old Testament and New Testament, the standard for righteousness is hitting the mark of perfection which is represented in Jesus who is characterized as New Covenant fulfillment of the Spirit of the law.

Religion is sin because sin is defined as missing the mark where the mark is God’s law as it is written on the hearts of New Covenant disciples. Defiled Religion misses the mark because it always codifies religious laws (i.e. traditions, doctrines, practices) in writing. These religious laws have the weight of law because religious people follow them religiously and evangelize other non-religious people to follow them also.

In Biblical terms, codified law is called the letter of the law because it is based on the written letter of the Law of Moses. With this understanding of the mark and codified laws, we can see clearly that rigid, religious adherence to the literal letter of the law equates with sin. Yes God did give us the letter of the law, but he never wanted anyone, even Moses and Israel to obey the letter of the law. Rather he wanted them to obey the spirit of the law which can only be obeyed when it is written on the hearts and minds of New Covenant disciples. Anything else is religion We are told clearly in the Bible that adherence to the written letter of the law yields death (not physical death but spiritual death), and that the Spirit of the Law yields spiritual life.

The religious practices of Judaism are based on the Law of Moses and various interpretations of the Law of Moses by Jewish Rabbis going back to the Babylonian exile. Although there is disagreement among Jews about these writings, they constitute the letter of the laws that govern Judaism. Christians, claim to take their spiritual direction from the Bible, but, like the Jews, they too have their favorite Bible theologians (e.g. Rabbis) who have shaped the form of Christianity going back to the second century. These writings, along with select, literal, Biblical interpretations by contemporary religious leaders (e.g. pastors, theologians, teachers, apostles, prophets, seminaries, etc.) govern beliefs and practices in Christianity. All of these religious ideas are codified within religious institutions at the denominational and local church level and effectively dictate and control what does and does not constitute the letter of the law for Christians.

The significance of this review is to make clear that both Judaism and Christianity are governed by laws written by men. This is how it has been since Adam and Eve. At various times since, people like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Caleb, David and many others understood the difference between Defiled Religion and Pure Religion. Even though they all had moments of backsliding into Defiled Religion, they were New Covenant believers in whom the law was written on their hearts. That means they did not practice Old/First Covenant religion based on the written letter of the law. Rather, their spiritual eyes were opened to understanding the spiritual intent of the written law and they followed the Spirit of God living within them — not the written Law of Moses or any other living persons. They understood what God meant in Jeremiah 31:31-34:

“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant which they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each man teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

These heroes of the faith did not submit to any form of religion because they knew in their hearts that to do so would be idolatry in which they would put the teaching of men before God. Plus, they knew that following the letter of the law would mean spiritual death for them. And over all that, they trusted that the Spirit of God was alive and at work in them on a moment by moment basis leading them to do God’s will.

Indeed there are many other kinds of sins to worry about, but, it is the sin of Defiled Religion that creates the spiritual context for all sin to occur. It is only by transitioning from Defiled Religion to Pure Religion that the spiritual ability to overcome any sin exists. The expression of that predisposition takes on a variety of forms in a world of many religions. Those religions may look different in terms of their doctrines, rituals and clothing, but they are all the same in the sense that they are based on religious works designed, refined and supervised by religious leaders over time. In other words, it is the nature of religion to change in both form and content. While the basic doctrines of each religion may not change much, the form (i.e. the public display) does change as leaders with varying skills, visions and influence come and go.The public form of religion also tends to change along with the social environment in which it operates.

Here are a few examples of evolutionary changes that occur in most religions — including Judaism, Christianity and Islam:

<colgroup>
<col width="100" />
<col width="700" />
<col width="0" /></colgroup>

Ceremonial clothing worn by leaders.

How congregants dress when attending worship events.

Architecture of worship buildings.

Worship music and instruments.

Worship rituals, liturgies and ceremonies.

This is not the case for Pure Religion. The Pure Religion designed and managed by God does not change with respect to time, social context or leadership. This is to be expected since Pure Religion is nothing more or less than God’s children reflecting his name (i.e. his character) to the world. And since God does not change, the people who represent him should not, change either.

God manages Pure Religion is by writing his laws on the hearts of New Covenant disciples. He knows that religious laws will change and evolve along with the form and content when men manage it. That is why he gave clear warnings about following other gods. Such warnings were necessary because people will want to shape religion and manage it so it suits their needs.

There is something about the nature of man that makes him want to control his environment — including religion. The way we see it, this is the result of the curse that God put on the land after Adam and Eve sinned.

STUDY TIP: See Religion is a Curse.

Being very subject to worldly influences, people will borrow religious symbols, behaviors and doctrines employed by other religions as they work to put their personal stamp on God’s image. Some of the more creative religious leaders will even invent their own hybridized religion by mixing useful parts of other religions to satisfy followers who have a need for a religion that is new, different, contemporary, attractive and inclusive. And voila! A new denomination or ministry is born. It is the story of the Golden Calf all over again.

COMMENTARY ON THE GOLDEN CALF INCIDENT: If we believe that all scripture is useful for training in righteousness, we must understand the spiritual meaning of this story. To understand it, we must put it in its proper context which is that Israel had escaped from Egypt. Moses was nearing the end of forty days on the mountain of God where God spoke his laws (i.e. commandments) to Moses who is a type of messiah because he could hear God’s spoken voice.

In Moses’ absence, the people got restless because they didn’t have anyone to report what God said to them. So, lacking leadership, what they did was create a new god (i.e. religion) out of the golden objects that they collected before they left Egypt. These golden objects symbolically represent all of the artifacts (e.g. buildings, altars, clothing, rituals, etc) that make religion look attractive. They are first represented in the story imagery of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which seemed good for food to Eve because it appealed to her natural senses (i.e. eyes, ears, touch, smell, intellect), and appeared to offer wisdom. ***

Unlike the Golden Calf which, according to the story, appears to be created in an instant, new and revised religions emerge slowly and almost imperceptibly, but they do show up often in the religious landscape. Anyone who doubts this phenomenon only needs to look at the many faces of Christianity and Judaism to see the result of man’s influence on religion. Each creation is a bit different from all the others, but they are all the same in one respect: They are religions that men and women have created with their own imagination and power.

When people create these new, better, up-to-date and attractive religions, they add to or subtract from God’s original instructions in some little or big way. Those who influence the changes and those who yield to the changes violate the First Commandment. While their vision and ministry may appear godly to their naive and ignorant followers, they have in fact created idols and abominations according to God’s perspective. These religious leaders have satisfied their personal needs for personal power and glory by shaping and/or creating the way religion looks and works. They are religious entrepreneurs in the great universe of Commercial Religion.

Men and women have been taking control of religion since the beginning of time. Adam and then Eve, the first spiritual people, were rescued out of darkness and deposited in the Garden of Eden where they walked with God. For a time they ate only from the Tree of Life, and life was good. But then came the temptation to sample an alternative form of religion that was symbolically represented by the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which was always there but which they had obediently avoided.

Having chosen to eat from that forbidden tree, Adam’s sin relegated all humanity to condemnation that is the result of the curse God place on him and Eve. This curse has confused and obscured the distinction between Pure Religion and Defiled Religion ever since. It first shows up in the Bible when Cain brought his sacrifice to God. On the surface it would appear that both sacrifices (i.e. Cain’s false religion and Abel’s true religion) should have been acceptable. Obviously God saw a difference and he rejected Cain’s religious offering.

Even though Abel’s offering was acceptable to God, Cain was jealous of the fact that God accepted Abel’s sacrifice (i.e. his worship) but did not accept Cain’s sacrifice. And that is pretty much the way the world has functioned ever since. The ones who get it right by practicing Pure Religion are persecuted by those who practice Defiled Religion. That was true in the case of the many prophets who were persecuted by Israel’s religious leaders and was true in the case of Jesus who was also killed by the religious leaders of his day. We see continuation of persecution of the righteous by the unrighteous in Saul who later became the Apostle Paul. Saul was super religious pharisee who persecuted people who followed Jesus until he saw the light (i.e. truth).

There is an implicit or stated covenant among adherents of all religions that certain things are done and certain things are not done in order to be a member in good standing of that religion. Those who conform to these standards are accepted, and those who reject the standards are rejected, ostracized, or perhaps even killed.

In God’s view, there are two kinds of religion. There is the kind that God requires and there is the kind that people have invented. People who are religious like to think that the religion they practice is what God requires, and to a limited extent their religious practices are superficially based on the Bible. But, the fact is that the religion they practice is based on traditions established by men. Indeed such religion does involve activities that are performed ritualistically according to the letter of The Law (i.e. Old/First Covenant), but ritual is not what God wants.

In God’s view, ritualistic traditions that religious people practice emerge from the flesh. God calls that Defiled Religion. God contrasts this with Pure Religion which includes hidden attitudes and behaviors that emerge from the Law being written on the hearts of New Covenant disciples.

To create the proper context for understanding Defiled Religion and Pure Religion, consider the following scripture:

1-Corinthians 7:17-24 Only, let every one lead the life which the Lord has assigned to him, and in which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. 18 Was any one at the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek to remove the marks of circumcision. Was any one at the time of his call uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. 19 For neither circumcision counts for anything nor uncircumcision, but keeping the commandments of God. 20 Every one should remain in the state in which he was called. 21 Were you a slave when called? Never mind. But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity. 22 For he who was called in the Lord as a slave is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a slave of Christ. 23 You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men. 24 So, brethren, in whatever state each was called, there let him remain with God.

COMMENTARY: This scripture uses the examples of circumcision and slavery to make the broader point that it is not necessary for New Covenant disciples to change themselves physically in order to have the law written on their hearts.

Because God looks at the heart of a man, not on the outward appearance, it is not necessary for New Covenant disciples to try to change anything about themselves in order to be acceptable to God. Even those who are not religious recognize that the public face of religion is inconsistent with their limited concept of God. When non-believing people see these inconsistencies they call it hypocrisy. Since God calls people hypocrites who appear righteous on the outside but who are spiritually dead and unclean on the inside, we will not shrink from using that term to characterize people who practice religion.

Self-righteous religionists, of course, think they are wrongly accused of of hypocrisy because they are convinced that they are doing exactly what God wants them to do. And it is not surprising that they should feel this way because their spiritual fathers have been doing religion the same way for generations. Furthermore, as far as they know, God finds no wrong in their religion, so they see no reason to change their religious ways. Israel was already God’s chosen people. They were not converted from paganism to believers. They were already believers in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob but they had gone astray in their Defiled Religion practices. They had eaten the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and God wanted to convert them, or return them back to eating from the Tree of Life.

That is still the story of Israel. Israel’s need to convert from Old/First Covenant religious practices to New Covenant freedom was the reason Jesus was sent to the lost sheep of Israel. It is also the story of Christians who are similarly bound up in Old/First Covenant religion. They also need to convert from their Defiled Religion to the Pure Religion of the New Covenant because they, like Israel, are in bondage to Defiled Religion.

This is the bondage to which Jesus referred when he quoted Isaiah in the following scripture:

Luke 4:16-19: And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up; and he went to the synagogue, as his custom was, on the sabbath day. And like the Jews, they do not understand that Jesus (i.e. the New Covenant) came to set them free from that bondage. The form of the religion is different for Jews and Christians, but it is bondage nonetheless.

It is for freedom from Defiled Religion that Jesus has set us free — not just from moral sins that we typically associate with the flesh. Just as early Christians had the circumcision group that taught that they must be circumcised, generations of Christians since have had their own versions of circumcision teachings. Instead of physical circumcision, however, they teach other kinds of bondage that enslaves people to religious organizations and religious leaders who make policy about what religious people can and cannot do. These religious leaders are just like the Pharisees of Jesus’ time. They lord themselves over the people, with burdens too heavy for them to carry. It is all bondage. It is just bondage of another form.

Neither Jews nor Christians understand how this works, however, so they continue working as slaves to their respective religious works.

DIVIDED RELIGIONS DO NOT REPRESENT GOD
Because we live in America, our perspective on religion is based on what we see and read about American religion. To the degree that American style Christianity has been exported throughout the world, we may also represent the face of religion globally scale as well.

The way we see it, this subject deserves our attention because the majority of what passes for “religion” in America, indeed in the world, is false, Old Covenant religion. When we say “false,” we mean that it does not agree with what the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob says is true and acceptable to him.

Readers who do not believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will probably not agree that our findings are relevant to their religious beliefs. But, even if readers are not personally interested in what this God has to say about religion, they might be interested from a cultural perspective. Hardly anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs, can deny that this God’s followers have historically had a lot influence, both good and bad, around the world. For this reason alone, it might be educational to read about religion to better understand history and current affairs as they have been influenced by religious Christians and Jews. Whatever the motivation, we think that readers will be interested to learn that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is not the god that Christian and Jewish religionists have historically presented to the world.

Realistically, we do not expect much better acceptance from people who do say they believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. That is to be expected because Old Covenant religionist’s eyes are blinded to the truth about the New Covenant. Nevertheless, we trust that the eyes of a few will be opened just as Saul of Tarsus’ eyes were opened on the way to Damascus. Saul, who was later known as Paul, experienced a radical change in perspective on the Old/First Covenant in which he was so deeply invested and which he worked so diligently to preserve by persecuting Jesus’ followers. The story of Saul/Paul encourages us to trust that if God was willing and able to convert a hard core religionist like Saul from Old/New Covenant religion to New Covenant faith, he can and will effect that conversion for others — even those who initially resist seeing and hearing with spiritual eyes and ears.

Christian readers readily accept that Saul needed converting because he was Jewish, but they reject that they need converting. In their pride that they “have Jesus,” they think they have all they need. They fail to realize that they have the same problem that Saul had: They are religious. They practice an Old/First Covenant kind of religion that differs only in its form from the religion that Saul and his fellow Pharisees practiced.

In their pride, Christians fail to see that they are just as legalistic as Saul and his religious colleagues before his conversion. Here are a few general ways that they are similar:

Jews have the written Law of Moses — Christians have their literal interpretations of the Bible.

Jews have their extra-Biblical customs (i.e. traditions) — Christians have their extra-Biblical customs (i.e. traditions).

Both religions have subtracted from the spiritual intent of The Law (i.e. Bible) by trying to live up to the literal word of The Law (i.e. Bible) as they understand it.

Both religions quote and follow honored religious scholars who have added to and subtracted from the Law/Bible with personal interpretations of the Law/Bible.

Both religions are narrow-minded and zealous about their beliefs and traditions.

Both religious groups make the same mistake of taking the written word literally while failing to understand the spiritual intent of the written law.

To Christians, Saul had the wrong kind of religion and they have the right kind of religion. This kind of thinking is a dead giveaway that they do need converting from Old/First Covenant religion. It is a dead giveaway that they are not New Covenant disciples. This way of thinking is identical to the prideful attitude of the Pharisees who had the Law of Moses and the Temple.

Once reader’s eyes are opened to the differences between Old/First Covenant and the New Covenant, they will find is that this God is not interested in various kinds of religious activity as Christians and Jews represent. They will learn that what has historically passed for religion was, and is, nothing more than man’s traditions and refined from generation to generation. If they follow the many links we make to scripture, they will discover that this God actually abhors these religious traditions and the pious, religious show-offs who practice them. Anyone who knows anything about God can see that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is not a God who is in the habit of showing off for earthly rewards. They will learn that his desire is to display himself as loving, merciful and compassionate to the world — not as a god of religious rules, rituals, and high-sounding language.

What they will learn is that, although hundreds of different religious traditions around the world mention God, claim speak in his name, claim to trust him and claim that his word as reported in the Bible is true, they are in fact hypocrites. This is no less true for Jews than for Christians. The very fact of their fine, and sometimes not so fine, sectarian religious distinctions disqualifies all of them as being Godly because they collectively deny the truth that God is one and that there should be no divisions between those who are New Covenant disciples (i.e. in Christ).

We can see clearly from the multitude of denominations around the world that they are not members of a unified body. This is true because they conduct their religious activities with total independence from one another and show no real sense of cooperation, nor mutual caring for one another. Their independence testifies to their illegitimacy as members of the Body of Christ.

All these religionists say one thing (i.e.we are Christians, Jews), but do another. What they say sounds good to them, and they believe what they say is the truth, but they are ignorant and deceived about the true nature of God and what he expects of his followers. In their self righteousness pride they believe that they are Godly, but they are only religious.

RELIGION IN AMERICA
Since we are Americans, American religion, specifically Christianity, is what we know best. In fact, it is downright complicated. If you are a church-goer, you probably did not realize that there was so much to religion. It is challenging to reconcile this picture of religion with the Biblical model of how God directed his people to serve/worship him. The contrast is found in the many complicated rules, or laws, that make up religion. Everything about religion found in the list above is a law written down by religious people. These laws exist as doctrines and bylaws and minutes of board meetings and notices in bulletins. If they are written down somewhere, they are, in God’s view, laws.

People who long for the good old days of New Testament Christianity wrongly wish for the New Testament church to be restored. That sounds very spiritual and pious. We must respect that they must have some clues from their own observations about church that says it is not exactly what God intended, but they have not yet come to understand what God really wants. Since they identify with Jesus, it is probably predictable that they would hope for restoration of the days directly following Jesus days on earth. Their hope for those good old days is wrong, however, because they do not understand that God’s model for Pure Religion goes back farther than Jesus, and the apostles. It is also an integral feature of religious organizations — at least in America. Religious organizations cannot become legal non-profit organizations unless they have a leadership system that includes a board of directors that is elected from the general population of the religious community. Members of this board tend to run their organizations much like a business. First they must become legally organized as a corporation with state government. To do that they must adopt written articles of incorporation and bylaws that will govern what the organization does how its goals will be accomplished. These are all laws created by men that effectively supersede God’s laws written on the hearts of men according to the terms of the New Covenant. Candidate religious organizations must file a lengthy, detailed application process with the Federal Government. Once legally organized they must establish policies and procedures for the handling of money. The federal government watches religious organizations closely to ensure that they follow all appropriate laws. These laws also supersede God’s laws.If government regulations are not followed, religious organizations can lose their non-profit status. If the organization loses its non-profit status, religionists who give tithes and offerings to the organization will not be able to claim tax deductions for their gifts. If religionists do not get that financial kick-back from the government, financial gifts will likely decrease. If giving decreases, the organization will be in financial trouble, and the organization would be at risk. For all those reasons and more, boards of directors must run the organization according to the rules that the government has established for non-profit organizations. The clear implication of this situation is that the laws of the land and good business practices are the most important facts considered when making corporate decisions. When that happens, the government trumps God and in effect becomes a god for the boards of directors to follow.See Religion and Government for more about this relationship.

Teams of volunteers are authorized to conduct the nonprofessional work of the religious community

Of all the factors included for analysis, this one comes closest to being Biblical. There is still a problem here, however, in the fact that whatever happens is under the direction and supervision of the leadership of the religious community. For the most part, whatever is done by volunteers is the result of a conscious deliberative decision to create a programmed volunteer activity. If the leadership designs the program, appoints and supervises the volunteers, and provides the resources (e.g. building, finances, etc.), and schedules the activity into the organization’s activity structure, it is clearly the organization’s program — not God’s.
