Similarly, most people will agree that it is not right for one person or group to enslave, oppress or cause pain and suffering (i.e. affliction) on another person or group. There is a general agreement about these relationships because of a prevailing sense of right and wrong (i.e. justice and injustice) that exists in most cultures.

Despite such agreement, few people will understand how the terms slavery, oppression and affliction can be applied to religion and government — especially their own religion. It is relatively easy for anyone to recognize signs of oppression and affliction in other religions and governments, especially cults. But the idea that their religion, or their government, which they consider to be the perfect because it was established by God, is unthinkable. Such is the stronghold of toxic religion.

The standard for righteousness of any religion, including Judaism and Christianity, is built on select scriptures that support religious beliefs and practices that lead followers of that religion to the conviction that the religion into which they were raised, or the religion which they have adopted, is the one true religion and all others are wrong. Many believe the same to be true for America. Even minor differences in doctrine are enough to make judgements about wrong beliefs and practices that create ongoing conflict, tension and division, at least, and physical conflict and warfare, at worst, between religions, and within the American culture.

Nevertheless, there is a charitable, condescending attitude by most religions that other religions have a right to exist — even though their religious beliefs and practices are not based on truth. The exception to this “live-and-let-live” rule is found in extreme fundamentalist religions that consider people who subscribe to any other religion to be sinners and/or infidels. Sometimes these attitudes about others are so strong that the fundamentalists will employ harsh, oppressive measures to punish or convert unbelievers to their version of the one, true, religion. History reports many examples of religious wars based on this attitude and examples abound even in contemporary news. Clearly, the fact that religion is the enemy is found in all past cultures and increasingly, it seems, in the present time.

We contrast these worldly attitudes with God’s attitude which is that all religions miss the mark. The mark, or standard to which we should all aspire is to hear God’s spoken voice which is the essence of faith.

For God, there are no religions that he favors more than others because all religion is sin. God’s attitude is that he is the one true God whom everyone should love and serve and that all religions practice idolatry. He does not waver from that attitude for any religion — even for religions like Judaism and Christianity that invoke his name freely in their religious writings and activities. For God, all religion is idolatry and all religious teachers are false prophets because they do not embody the characteristics of true prophets.

Bible stories tell us that Judaism and Christianity are not exceptions to God’s assessment that religion is idolatry. They, like all other religions, do not listen to God’s voice but do follow religious laws that are contrary to God’s spiritual laws. The only thing that is different about Judaism and Christianity is that they have the potential to lead religious people to faith. This potential will not be realized, however, until they learn to listen to God’s voice while learning to interpret the Bible symbolically instead of literally.

Putting these truths in the context of justice, we see that God’s attitude is that anyone in any religion who teaches and enforces doctrines that are not based on his definition of faith effectively enslave, oppress and afflict people who embrace that religion. This is true for both clergy and laity. Because these relationships obstruct the natural and right order of God’s relationship with his creation (i.e. spiritual people created in his image), God calls religion slavery, injustice, iniquity, the enemy, and unrighteousness from which they must be delivered.

The problem with using these natural examples of offensive behaviors as our frame of reference for understanding the Bible is that we do not think or do the way God does. In our humanness, most of us will respond with outrage and disgust when we learn about any of these abuses. Some will even rise up with righteous indignation that calls for the abuser(s) to be punished to the full extent of the law. And some will even vow to advocate in some way to eradicate such abuses from the face of the earth.

Experiencing such emotions and resolve about social issues is good, even though it is troubling for the soul. It is evidence of God’s spirit in us when we desire to eliminate abuse and bring the abuser(s) to justice. This is the kind of response that God wants to see in his people regarding religion. But it is not enough to want to do something about one or more of the kinds of social injustices of slavery, persecution and oppression if we do not first want to deal with the kind of abuse that God cares about most: Religious slavery and oppression.

UNDERSTANDING SLAVERY, INJUSTICE AND OPPRESSION
The issues of slavery, injustice and oppression are among the most mysterious and important Biblical issues, along with idolatry, that must be understood if we are to have a good understanding of God and how he expects his people to relate to one another. He introduces the spiritual idea that we, as natural beings, will have difficult understanding, with a physical concept that we do understand. In the matters of slavery, oppression and bondage we have a worldly understanding of these terms but do not quickly or easily understand the spiritual intent that God is trying to communicate to us through these terms.

In the process of understanding God, we must first accept that he uses parables and hyperbole to communicate his strong feelings about spiritual matters. People who believe that they are created in God’s image should share his strong feelings about these spiritual matters. For example, most people have strong feelings about slavery, injustice and oppression as they exist in the natural world. These natural feelings are clues about God’s feelings about spiritual slavery, spiritual injustice and spiritual oppression.

People who have never been physically enslaved will not have the same level of revulsion toward slavery as those who have been victims of slavery. People who don’t have strong feelings about the natural expressions of slavery, injustice and oppression that have historically existed in the world will have trouble understanding God’s feelings about the spiritual expressions of these words with respect to slavery to religion.

People who do not share God’s feelings about the spiritual expressions of these words should be concerned because lack of such feelings is a very good sign that they have not been released from captivity themselves. For them, there is no sense of remembrance of captivity to religion in Egypt because they are still slaves in Egypt. And if that is true, they are still guilty of being part of an unjust, slave-holding, religious system that oppresses and afflicts people. They are Old/First Covenant religionists and not New Covenant disciples.

RIGHTEOUSNESS AND JUSTICE
When we look at the definitions of the Hebrew and Greek words translated into English as injustice, iniquity and unrighteousness, we see that they have common meanings. Injustice can also be translated as iniquity, and unrighteousness can be translated as injustice and iniquity. We conclude from this observation that these words all mean the same thing: They represent the polar opposite of justice.

When we look at the meaning of justice, we find that it sets the standard for what is right. This explains why God so often combines justice and righteousness in one thought. Taking the analysis one step further, we can say that justice and righteousness are the standards (i.e. marks) by which God judges sin. They are also the standards by which people should judge sin.

God’s standard of righteousness can be found only in New Covenant disciples who know how to listen to God’s spoken voice. Old/First Covenant religionists do not meet this standard because they listen to false prophets. God calls this sin.

New Covenant disciples practice justice and righteousness because they have corrected (i.e. done, administered) the wrong relationship that exists between themselves and God. They are justified when they return to listening to God’s spoken voice.

But they do not relax because they are personally justified in their relationship with God. They also think of themselves as warriors in God’s army that intercedes between people who are still religious and engage in spiritual warfare by speaking with God’s voice to reconcile those religious people to a proper, right relationship to God.

In other words, after they practice justice and righteousness in themselves, they do it for others. By helping others escape from religion, and learn how to hear God’s spoken voice, they show that they remember that they were once slaves to it and have compassion on people who are still enslaved to it. When they do this, they do justice.

HOW TO DO JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS
We cannot really understand how to apply justice and righteousness until we put them in the context of pure religion and defiled religion where we see that justice and righteousness equate with New Covenant (i.e. Pure Religion) and injustice and unrighteousness equates to Old/First Covenant (i.e. Defiled Religion).

It is for very good reason that Jews and Christians are very concerned about righteousness. The term is mentioned 210 times in the NASB Old Testament and 86 times in the NASB New Testament. Justice, on the other hand, is a significantly less important doctrine. Justice is mentioned 126 times in the NASB Old Testament and only 9 times in the NASB New Testament.

Based on these scriptures, Jews have developed the Tzedakah doctrine that strongly emphasizes doing righteousness as an act of charity in which Jews try to create a measure of balance in economic injustice by helping people who are financially poor. Christians take a slightly different view of how to achieve justice through political involvement in contemporary social justice issues (e.g. abortion, health care, hunger, poverty, sex trafficking, environment, world peace, etc.).

While charitable and political efforts of well-meaning Jews and Christians do make real differences in some areas of social injustice as it defined by their cultures and religions, they have an uninformed understanding of God’s unique view of justice which relates to the oppression that religious leaders impose on people who follow them. Followers voluntarily enslave themselves to leaders by continually going to them for religious instruction. We see this principle in the story that shows how Israel became slaves in Egypt.

When Israel/Jacob first went down to Egypt, it was because of a spiritual famine in the Promised Land. Instead of personally listening to God’s voice, and instead of teaching his sons to listen to God’s voice, Israel/Jacob did the expedient solution of sending his family to Egypt to buy food. For a while — the time varies from person to person — we find religion to be very satisfying, but eventually we begin to have doubts. And, hopefully we will begin to see that religion is abusive to us an others. At that point we are ready to make the transition from Old/First Covenant to becoming New Covenant disciples. While we remain involved in religion, however, we are victims of abuse and oppression.

God views this abuse as the highest order of sin because it is the sin that enables all other sins and injustices. It has this weight because religion is THE obstacle that obstructs people from becoming New Covenant disciples and from hearing God’s voice. Here is a brief overview of the environment that allows injustice to thrive:

The principles of Abrahamic religions are based on a covenant with God and several common scriptures. They all claim to be monotheistic.

Christians, Jews and Muslims all practice idolatry because they all subscribe to doctrines created by men, supervised by men and taught by false prophets.

Generations of religious leaders in all three religions effectively function as other gods and false prophets. In this capacity, they have captured the hearts of people with wrong teachings that appear to represent God and his ways but are only imaginations of the mind based on literal interpretations of the Bible.

Ignorant people fall for the deceptions of false prophets and become enslaved to the religions that the false prophets promote and teach.

God places the blame for slavery on the false prophets and the people who follow their teachings. do not go unpunished for the sin of not listening to God’s voice.

God calls the act of luring people into religion and keeping them there through deceptive teaching injustice, slavery, oppression and affliction.

God also uses the terms slavery, injustice, affliction and greed to describe how religion uses and abuses people for temporal, personal rewards:

praise of men

fulfillment of selfish ambition, power and greed

dishonest gain

Just like Pharaoh enslaved Israel to build structures that enhanced his kingdom, religious leaders of all kinds in all ages have used their supporters and followers to enhance their personal kingdoms. These radical terms (e.g. slavery, injustice, oppression and affliction) and the images they evoke are hard to accept, but we must accept that God always uses exaggeration and hyperbole to educate us about his perspective on our heart attitudes and fleshly behaviors. Therefore, from God’s exaggerations, we must conclude that he feels very strongly about these matters.

When we discount, minimize, ignore or dismiss any scripture because we think it is unimportant, archaic, irrelevant, ambiguous, or even nonsensical, one or both of the following attitudes apply:

We effectively say that portions of God’s word (i.e. those parts we do not understand or dismiss) are not profitable for training in righteousness.

We effectively refuse to be trained by whatever it means if we could understand what it means.

These attitudes indicate lack of trust and rebellion toward God. Since Jews and Christians like to believe that they trust God and are faithful to obey him in all ways, they should desire to come to understand where their personal practices of idolatry might arouse God’s jealous anger toward them. If they really want to be on God’s good side, they should make every effort to study with the hope of learning the issues for which they need discipline so that they might correct their attitudes and behaviors, repent, and return to God.

None of this will happen, however, unless they understand the symbolism of the Bible. If understanding of the literal Bible would bring them to repentance, they would repent for slavery, persecution and oppression but these are not messages heard in synagogue or church. Intellectual reasoning and knowledge does not lead anyone to conviction of sin and repentance.

Moreover, change in perspective and practice will not happen until and unless we understand that not listening to God’s voice is sin. If we listen to the voices of false prophets and do not trust that we can really hear God’s voice ourselves, we effectively place those false prophets between us and God. If we consider false prophets to be reliable sources of truth, knowledge and wisdom, we practice idolatry. By going to religious leaders for instruction about God instead of going directly to God, we insert them as idols between ourselves and God. And if we do not engage in personal study that will lead us to understanding of the deep mysteries of God, we show that we do not love God enough to seek him with our heart, mind, soul and strength.

OTHER WORDS FOR ABUSE
It is for good reasons that injustice, slavery and oppression are poorly understood Biblical concepts. The main reason for misunderstanding is that we default to interpreting these terms according to their conventional definitions which always exist within a context of social or political power that one person or group has over another person or group. Common examples we see in everyday life and in the news include the following:

Autocratic / authoritarian bosses in the workplace.

Helicopter parenting.

Domestic violence in the home.

Pimps who traffic prostitutes.

Despotic monarchs or governments.

Perhaps the best English word that represents injustice, slavery and oppression in everyday language is abuse. Two Hebrew words (Qalown and `alal) are commonly translated as “abuse” in contemporary Bible versions but rarely in the King James Version (KJV) or the New American Standard (NASB). These words correlate strongly with the Hebrew word Kalam which is most often translated as shame, dishonor and humiliation in the NASB and as ashamed, confounded and shame in the KJV

We conclude from these word definitions and translations that abuse originates from from the mouths of enemies who use words like swords and arrows to do harm by speaking lies and deceit. This symbolism agrees with other scriptures in which God’s word is equated with a sharp sword that speaks truth and produces life.

It has been well documented that the effects of abuse (verbal, sexual, emotional or physical) always lasts longer than the traumatic event. These effects may be summarized as guilt and shame which induce wrong beliefs about ourselves and others which, unless arrested, control how we think about ourselves and how we present ourselves to others. More importantly, the lasting, toxic effects of religious abuse controls how we present ourselves to God.

Religion enslaves people to beliefs about God that compels them to engage in continuous religious activity to please him. When this is the way people think and function, they are never at rest in terms of their relationship with God. They are always doing something with their bodies according to doctrines created by men but their hearts are far from God.

In God’s language, religion uses abusive social and psychological control to compel them to engage in religious activities based on literal interpretations of the Bible. This control denies to people the God-given freedom and God-given right to worship him in spirit and truth without a human mediator (i.e. religious leader), outside a religious building, and without physical religious activity. In God’s view, religion that imposes religious leaders, religious buildings and religious activity as conditions for for worship is unjust slavery. It is unjust because it places idols (i.e. religious leaders) ahead of God and teaches people to listen to religious leaders (i.e. false prophets) instead of listening to God’s voice. It is slavery because the truth is that God’s ideal for true worship is that it will be done internally (i.e. in the heart) in spirit and truth — not in the flesh (i.e. external, physical activity), and not in a Tabernacles, Temples, Altars, or High Places.

That the benefits of religious activity do not last should not be surprising because God says clearly that rituals done in certain places at certain times, according to human regulations are Old/First Covenant religious sacrifices. These rituals are not able to cleanse the conscience, and are not part of the new order (i.e. of the New Covenant and the priesthood of Melchizedek.) That rituals do not have the power to cleanse the conscience should not be surprising given the fact that learned rituals having the appearance of wisdom are nothing more than traditions created by religious leaders for others to follow.

God calls this devotion to religious activity injustice and slavery. It is an unjust system that uses social power to control people to do things that God has not commanded them to do. because religious leaders enslave people to religious beliefs and practices that actually separate them from God because they are too busy being religious and too busy listening to the teachings of religious leaders to listen to God.

Because the wounds caused by people who perpetrate guilt and shame on us are internal, they are not as easy to identify, diagnose or heal as external, physical wounds. This is as true for religious abuse as it is for wounds we experience from any other verbal abuse which causes us to believe lies about ourselves or others. Thus it can be said that injustice, slavery and oppression is essentially spiritual abuse.

The nature of spiritual abuse becomes clearer in the New Testament where the Greek word blasphemo, is translated as abuse, reviling and blasphemy in the NASB and as blasphemy and speaking evil in the KJV.

In the New Testament we see Jesus accusing religious leaders of blasphemy and the religious leaders accusing Jesus of blasphemy. We conclude from this that the perception of blasphemy depends on who is speaking and who is listening. In other words, the one who speaks the truth (i.e. Jesus) is regarded as a blasphemer by those who do not know the truth (i.e. religious leaders). And those who do not know the truth will malign and revile (i.e. blaspheme) those who do know the truth. Thus it can be said that the abuse which Jesus and Paul experienced at the hands of religious leaders is spiritual abuse.

This conflict between those who do know the truth and those who do not know the truth is a useful summary of the basic conflict of the Bible between good and evil. These opposing forces are represented in many different ways, including the following:

Two Covenants

Gods at War

Sibling Conflict

Two Deaths

JUDAIZERS AND SPIRITUAL ABUSE
Except for the examples of drugs and alcohol, abuse is always associated with social and political power. In other words, abuse, injustice, slavery and oppression all occur in the context of relationships where one group, or individual, uses social, political, or physical power for selfish purposes in controlling another individual or group.

Abusive relationships are the kinds of relationships God has in mind when he reminds his people to “love your neighbor as yourselves.” In this positive command to love, God makes a command against negative behaviors (i.e. abuse, injustice, slavery, oppression). While God is opposed to abuse in any social context (e.g. work, home, government, etc.) his command is focused on abuse in religious communities. We know this because religion is the enemy whom God tells us to love and do good even though religion has persecuted us and spitefully used us.

Love is a code word for the New Covenant. Doing this is an expression of hate — not love.

When we participate in and promote religion, we are working to advance the kingdom of the world of religion and inhibit and reduce the kingdom of God. The problem Jesus had with Jewish religious leaders was that he wanted to destroy their kingdom. This is why the Pharisees (i.e. religious leaders) had a problem with Jesus and needed to get rid of him.

The story of Jesus’ experiences with the Pharisees anticipates the problems that New Covenant disciples in every generation will have with religious leaders. The Pharisees are intent on preserving their religious kingdoms, and New Covenant disciples are intent on advancing the kingdom of God.

Kingdom conflict is also evident in stories where Judaizers tried to coerce early followers of Jesus to obey long-standing Jewish religious laws and traditions. Judaizers past and present love their religion. The spirit of the Judaizers has always been, and is still, active in religion. We see it at work in every evangelistic effort to grow Judaism and Christianity. Anyone who encourages someone to adopt religious behaviors and to listen to false prophets — not to listen to God’s voice — is a Judaizer.

Judaizers are God’s enemies because they participate in the process by which people are enslaved and oppressed by religion while being diverted from God. In God’s view, steering people to religion or pressuring them to conform to certain religious behaviors is abuse and injustice. When we encourage someone to share our religious beliefs and practices, we are effectively leading them into slavery and oppression.

Of course this interpretation will be hard for any religious person to accept because all religions embrace the idea of evangelism that seeks to attract more people to that religion. Thus, while religion sees evangelism as a virtue, God sees religious evangelism as sin because the purpose of religion is to enslave and oppress people to religious beliefs and practices.

Identification of injustice, slavery, oppression and affliction in the context of religion is hard to understand for several reasons:

In religion, injustice, slavery, oppression and affliction are generally very subtle– not overt, visible and disgustingly offensive like we see in the natural world.

Religion typically is associated with peaceful relationships.

Religious people are convinced that they love the people with whom they share their religious beliefs and practices because they experience good feelings while doing religious activities together.

People who follow religious leaders are convinced that religious leaders are only motivated by the welfare of those who follow them.

Opportunities for abuse arise when individuals with charisma and effective interpersonal skills who have an apparent legitimate authority to govern — either a self-declared “calling” or appointment by others — use that authority and charisma for purely personal purposes — and not for the general benefit or welfare of others. Of course there have been many religious wars, but, because they have been historically explained as holy wars, they have not been categorized as abuse of one religious group by another. More commonly, inter-religious conflicts between different religious have been categorized as religious persecution of one religion by another religion, while intra-religious abuses tend to be categorized as spiritual abuse perpetrated by a religious leader, or leaders, against individual members of a religious community to either force them to convert to their religion or, once they become members of the religious community, control them with the tacit or explicit approval of the wider community. Thus it can be said that, because subtle and overt abuses occur within small and large religious communities, the entire religious community bears the blame for all abuse. Even if individual members of the community do not directly participate in the abuse, they are still guilty because they encourage and enable the formation and preservation of the religious environment in which the abuse occurs.

It is fair to say that all spiritual abuse can be attributed to religious beliefs and doctrines embraced by the entire religious community. It is also fair to say that justification for spiritual abuse is found in literal interpretations of scripture. That otherwise normal, well-adjusted, law-abiding people become willing accomplices to such injustice is a scary testimony of the enticements to be religious inherent in literal interpretations of the Bible and of the toxic effects of religion.

When we consider these examples of abuse with a Biblical perspective, we see that it has much to say about all kinds of inter-religious and intra-religious conflicts and persecution. We begin to understand why religion has always been the enemy. And we begin to understand how the New Covenant is the covenant of peace that is preferred to the Old/First Covenant of death that enables and even encourages abuse, slavery and oppression.

When we look at the warnings of the prophets, we see that spiritual abuse has always existed within Jerusalem (i.e. symbolic representation of people who identify as Jews and Christians). These warnings still apply today because religions still abuse, enslave and oppress the people who join them.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
Injustice first appears in the Bible in the story of Cain and Abel. Because it was an unjust act for Cain to kill Abel, God avenged Abel’s murder by punishing Cain. This punishment brought justice for Abel.

To understand injustice, slavery and oppression, it is useful to look at the history of religious wars and oppression as revealed in the following articles:

Religious Wars and Religious Freedom: A Troubled History

In the Name of Heaven: 3,000 Years of Religious Persecution

Religious Persecution On the Rise: Minorities Under Threat in the Middle East

America’s True History of Religious Tolerance

Religious Oppression Around the World

The Protestant Heritage: The suffering of persecution

The Most Persecuted Religion in the World

Persecution in the Early Church: Did You Know?

Persecutions and Migrations of the Anabaptists

Crusades

Religious war

Freethought and Freedom: Aquinas, Luther, and Calvin on Persecution

From this brief review of the history of religious wars and persecution we conclude that events reported in both the Old and New Testaments are part of an eternal continuum of religious conflict carried out by false prophets and other gods. Perpetrators of religious wars, slavery and oppression claim, and perhaps even believe, that they are acting with Godly motives based on their literal interpretations of the Bible. In fact, however, they are acting on their own authority with selfish motives — not under Godly commands.

Anyone who doubts the dangers of literal interpretations of the Bible only needs to consider this history to see the harm such interpretations do to people and to God. The history of religious wars and persecutions clearly reveal what happens when different religions base their doctrines on rigid, literal interpretations of the Bible. They make war with other religions that do not believe as they do. It has always been that way and will always be that way.

All religions make the same mistakes as their religious forefathers made when interpreting scripture literally. They are thus doomed to be both perpetrators and victims of religious persecution and oppression.
