And now it is up to those who say that they love God and want to serve him to take the test to learn if they love him with all their heart or only with their mouths.

We will find these treasures only when we ask “what does this mean, what is the symbolism of this?” when we encounter difficult scriptures. God does not give understanding, however, until we set aside our pride in thinking that we know and understand the Bible because we have read it and have listened to good teaching by knowledgeable teachers. This is important because if we think we have learned all the truth we need from a human teacher, or by our own intellectual study, God will not give us his truth. He is this way because he is very adamant (i.e. jealous) about his people listening to his voice and not to the voices of false prophets.

Students in all levels of academia are tested to document how much they have learned. Students of music and sports also have experts watching and rating their progress to determine if they are qualified to move up to a higher level of competition. And parents and employers constantly evaluate their children and workers to determine if they are living up to standards set for them. But when it comes to spiritual growth, God watches his people, of course, but does not give them a report card to help them understand how they are doing in obeying his laws and listening to his voice. Therefore, lacking an objective, external evaluation, disciples on are their own to look for spiritual clues that will tell them how they are doing. Plus, those who study together with others have the advantage of their insights and observations.

In this series of pages we will help New Covenant disciples find those spiritual clues. These clues fall into one or both of two categories regarding our religious lives:

Things we once did and believed, we no longer do or believe.

Things that we did not previously do or believe, we now do and believe.

When we begin to notice these changes, we should be encouraged that transformation of the mind has begun and that God is beginning to perfect us by opening our spiritual eyes and healing us from bondage to the sin of religion. These are good, positive effects of study.

At the same time, however, awareness of these changes might be uncomfortable to us for several reasons:

They cause us to doubt what we have believed.

They cause us to distrust religious leaders whom we formerly trusted without doubt.

They create a growing sense of unease with the fact that we are becoming different from people whom we know and love and with whom we have shared religious beliefs and practices.

Uncomfortable as they may be, these feelings of doubt, mistrust, and alienation are good, positive signs that our studies are beginning to yield fruit. They are signs that we are beginning to die to our need for religion as we hear and respond to God’s voice.

EXPECT “AHA” MOMENTS OF REVELATION
If we keep studying and listening to God’s voice, sooner or later, new truths will become evident to us. God will give us wisdom to hear his voice as we read between the lines of the written word. When we hear his voice — it is not an audible voice — our attention will be diverted from literal interpretations of the written word to the the spirit meanings. It will be one of those great “aha” moments when confusing, mysterious words of the Bible become clear and understandable.

STUDY TIP: These “aha” moments could also be called “rapturous” moments.

When we hear God’s voice this way, life changes. We see God, religion, people and the world differently. In particular, we will see that religion holds people in bondage. And we will be extremely grateful that we have been delivered from religion.

We will also develop great compassion for people who are still enslaved to religion. We will begin to see our responsibility to help people enjoy the same freedom from religion that we now enjoy and will look for ways in which we can become warriors against the enemy.

If we keep on studying, good deeds will flow out of us naturally like living water.

STUDY TIP: See this link for more about good deeds.

It will happen as the Spirit of God directs us — not according to religious traditions or programs that our church or synagogue has on its calendar or in its order of service or various teachings that guide all our religious activity. Sooner or later we will conclude that it is in our best interests to do what God says — even though we do not agree or do not understand why we should do it. If we continue to apply what we learn, eventually we will conclude that obedience is truly life-giving. The truth of 2 Timothy 3:16 will become very clear to us and perhaps to others as well.

If Bible study does not affect our attitudes, our beliefs and behaviors, and does not open our spiritual eyes to understanding of the mysteries and symbolism of the Bible, we are not receiving what God is able to convey through scripture as he leads us away from religion to faith. If we do not change, we are not listening while reading. And if we do not listen, we will not be equipped to apply what we have learned in any way other than legalistically.

The good news is that God has given us many clues to steer us away from literal interpretations that lead to religious legalism. The ultimate test of obedience exists in our response to what we learn about God’s attitude about religion. If we read the Bible only for its literal content, we will remain religious because the foundation for religion for Jews, Muslims and Christians is found in the literal, written word. If we read the Bible symbolically, however, and if we listen for God’s voice and do not just read words on paper, we will begin to understand what Godly legalism is and will dare to abandon our religious habits. We will be on our way to becoming New Covenant disciples. But it will not be easy.

If we dare to leave our religion, or even express doubt about it, we will find that those with whom we shared a religious tradition become our personal enemies, adversaries and oppressors who will try to keep us in bondage to their religious traditions. They will do this because they find security in religion and anything that shakes or threatens their religion, including someone leaving it, challenges beliefs and practices in which they have made great psychological, social and financial investments. Anyone who leaves their religion casts a measure of doubt about it’s validity, strength and future. That makes those who remain in the religion very uncomfortable and may cause them to respond negatively to any threat to their security.

The Religion Detox Network exists to provide comfort for people have left religion through the opportunity to network with others who have also left religion.

TEST YOUR HEART
A simple little test for knowing when the law is written on our heart, is found in Psalm 119. Anyone who can resonate with these affirmations of Psalm 119 is well on the way to being a New Covenant disciple. And if they are only reading for the literal meanings, they are Old/First Covenant religionists — not New Covenant disciples. For Old/First Covenant religionists, the only promises that apply are the ones included in the curses of Deuteronomy 28:15-6 and in warnings of punishment and exile found in the books of the prophets. Old/First Covenant religionists should be able to identify that these promises are present and active in their disordered, chaotic life. If they are New Covenant disciples, however, they will be able to read and identify that the spiritual blessings of Deuteronomy 28:1-14 are present in their life.

We should all be eager to read and interpret the Bible so that we can identify with the characters and their trials and tribulations. There is much to be learned from them as they work through the process of securing their New Covenant salvation that comes from deliverance from Old/First Covenant religion. Maybe we understand the facts of the stories, but if we do not learn from these stories and apply them to our own lives, we have failed the reading comprehension test that God has given us.

EXPECT RELIGION TO DECREASE AS FAITH GROWS
How the law (i.e. religion) functions as a tutor that leads us to faith is an ongoing theme of the Bible revealed symbolically in stories about conflict between organized people groups (i.e. nations), kingdoms and kings who try to subdue and control one another.

It is instructive to learn about this principle (i.e. law leads us to faith) by looking at the lives of the Biblical heroes mentioned in Hebrews 11. Applying a little common sense, we observe that none of the characters mentioned in Hebrews 11 had Bibles to consult to learn what God expected from them. Some had the written Law of Moses, but none of them had the New Testament in written form. Even though they did not have a written New Testament, however, they had the full spiritual content of it available to them because, as people of faith, they could hear God’s voice. Just as important, they also had faith to act on what they believed God told them. In other words, they applied what they learned when God spoke. All Bible stories confirm that what God wants above all is that we obey God’s command to obey his voice spoken to our hearts by his spirit.

Another thing we notice about these heroes of faith was that they all had intense, even violent conflict with religion. They all lived in religious environments (e.g. Egypt, Babylon, Canaan, Philistines, etc.). Their struggles against the world of religion teach us that Religion is the Enemy with which all of God’s children must contend. The war is symbolically represented in the temptations to break covenant with God by having relationships with religions and adopting their practices.

Religion is the enemy, however, only for New Covenant disciples who do not identify with any religion. People who identify with a recognized religious community (e.g. Christian, Jew, etc.) are on friendly terms with that community and pose no threat to it. But God’s people, when they are in a New Covenant relationship, do pose a serious threat because they are commanded to destroy all traces of religion. God reinforces this command by saying that those who are friends with the world of religion are God’s enemies. New Covenant disciples will be hated and persecuted because they love God and are not part of the world of religion.

In the Bible, conflict between religions is represented as bloody warfare between religious kingdoms and between God and all religions symbolically represented as Egypt and Babylon. These wars symbolize the fact that God is at war with all religions for the hearts and minds of his children.

In God is Calling People Out of Religion, we see the present reality of these stories in the fact that God is winning this ongoing war as individuals leave religion. One by one, he is turning the hearts of Old/First Covenant religionists to himself. He is saving them from further slavery and destruction by religion and returning them from exile where they have been in bondage to religion.

Old Testament stories are not the only place where God’s people are in conflict with surrounding nations/peoples. In the New Testament, we read that Jesus and the apostle Paul (after his conversion) were also in constant conflict with Jewish religious leaders. Beyond those biblical reports, legend reports that most of the rest of Jesus’ followers died tragically at the hands of religious enemies.

Old Testament stories report that whenever the heroes themselves or any of the kings of Israel made treaties with the religious nations, intermarried with them, worshiped their gods, or adopted their religious customs, God punished them for intermingling with those other religions. When they were faithful to act on what they heard God say, however, they overcame the toxic, deadly influence of the world of religion through active faith.

The message that we should find when reading these stories is that God warns us just as warned Israel we should not follow the customs of any religion. That means no buildings, not clergy, no public worship, no sacraments, and so on. Furthermore, he clearly told Israel and us to utterly destroy those religions and all of the physical elements (e.g. altars, idols, temples, etc.) that are found in the high places that God told them to destroy.

The need to entirely destroy religion in our personal lives is found in the “two masters” and “double-mindedness” principles. Several kings did some things right in the sight of God but did not demolish all the high places. Because they were double-minded, God did not excuse them for their disobedient failure to demolish the high places and sent them into exile.

God brought this judgment on Israel, and will bring similar judgment on us if we are double-minded. He is a jealous God who wants us to love him with all our heart, soul and strength and will punish us when our double-mindedness leads us to following the multitude of gods found in religion. In doing this, they prove that religion is their master, not God. When he says “all their heart soul and strength” he means “all their heart soul and strength”.

People who read these stories with a mind to apply them to their own lives will sooner or later begin to recognize that they have been deceived, enslaved, used and misused by religion in general and religious leaders in particular. Most will not have suffered bodily persecution or death even though research says that persecution still does happen and is on the increase in these modern times. But this research does not report the subtle kinds of persecution found within a specific religious community. While this kind of persecution is usually not reported in the news, it is nonetheless tragic for those who experience it first hand at the hands of religious people who were once considered to be friends and family but God considers to be enemies.

Religion Detox Network forums, especially Toxicity, provide places for victims of religious abuse to report on the many overt and subtle ways that persecution occurs. Everyone knows about sexual abuse in the church because it is well reported in the news. There are many other kinds of abuse, however, which are not reported in the news but which are evidence of the damage that religion does to people it claims to love and care for. Personal stories of such abuse will help others who have not yet escaped from religion recognize that their own experiences are examples of persecution from which God will deliver them when they reject religion. For God, listening to and obeying his voice is the goal — not just reading. Therefore, when reading, the goal should be to listen with our heart while reading with our mind. But since the Biblical idea of listening/hearing also contains the command to obey, some kind of follow up response is necessary.

Changes we are moved to make in response to hearing God’s voice may sometimes move us to make big, sudden, radical decisions about our relationship with religion. More likely, however, we will find that spiritual growth is a gradual, little-by-little process that shows we are gaining freedom from religion. Since it is all spiritual, those changes are difficult to describe with human words. The character of our religious life is discussed in some detail in HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE where we learn that there are many kinds of life. While God is concerned about all of our life, there are two parts that are of special interest to him: Our religious life and our spiritual life.

God is concerned about our religious life because religion is sin. And he is concerned about our spiritual life because it reflects the attitude of our hearts toward him.

There are several ways to test whether our heart is close to God. The most important way is to apply what learn when we hear his voice — not from what we read. That means we obey (i.e. apply) what we hear God tell us through his spirit. But we want to be careful to obey the spirit of the law and not the letter of the law because the spirit gives life while the letter gives death.

We can call that kind of response “obedience” or “legalism” if we want, but it can also be called “following God’s laws/commandments/precepts”. We can call it whatever we want, but it is Godly legalism because we are choosing to follow God’s laws — not religious laws created by men. It is Godly legalism if the law is written on our heart. Ungodly legalism is when we do it because the laws we follow are written down, promoted and followed according to the traditions of men.

God calls such legalism works of the flesh that counts for nothing. But we also know that he expects people to obey what they hear/read him say. Thus the object of reading God’s word, which is the equivalent of hearing his voice, should be so that we can obey what we have heard God speak to our hearts. If we read for any other reason, we read for the wrong reason.

Once we get the hang of it, obedience to God’s word becomes our life, and we, like Jesus, will live to die so that others may live. And we, like Jesus, we will only do what we see the father doing, and say what the father says. We will uncover deep mysteries that expose the motives of our hearts and the hearts of other religionists.

And after the motives of our hard, religious hearts are exposed, we will not want to do the religious things what we did and still see everyone else doing. Nor will we talk the religious talk that we once talked and still see everyone else talking. But more than just stopping these activities, we will be grieved in our hearts over the fact that we once did these things and grieve for our friends, family, and others whom we still observe doing them. We will see it all for what it is: Gross, showy religion that people do to build their reputations as godly people while following and serving other gods. We will see all religion as God sees it: Abomination. And we will begin to see why God wants to utterly destroy religion.

But if we continue to do what everyone else is doing and say what they are saying, we prove that we a part of the religious system that God wants to destroy. We have stumbled over the stumbling block of the literal words of the Bible and failed to interpret its symbolic mysteries.

We must be constantly aware of apparent Biblical legalism that compels us to go somewhere (e.g. church, synagogue, etc.) and do something ceremonial. When we make a doctrine out of a small portion of scripture that appears to command such behavior without considering and applying it in the context of all scripture, we make the same mistake that Jews and Christians have made for thousands of years. The basic mistake (i.e. stumbling) is to interpret the isolated portion of scripture literally and blindly do what it says just because it is listed as a commandment or because a Bible character did it. This is not the same thing as being led by the spirit. This is not the same thing as listening to God’s voice.

The way we see it, humans tend to be legalistic because there is something in most of us that sincerely wants to be obedient to God. No one who believes that God exists or might exist wants to be on his bad side and suffer his wrath in this life or in the afterlife. When we combine that tendency with cultural training in religion, we have religion run amok in the world. But, because that urge is there, we need to be careful that we do not obey God’s word legalistically. God wants his people to enter into his rest, but those who are legalistic will not enter into that rest. Those who interpret what God says literally fall into the trap of legalism and legalistic works (i.e. religion) thus disqualifying themselves for the rest that God wants for them.

God does not like legalism because it is the opposite of being at rest. Moreover, the hearts of legalistic people are not oriented toward God. Rather, they are oriented toward following religious rules and regulations created by men. Legalistic people are religious people who practice their religion in the flesh — not in the Spirit. In God’s view, they are following other gods (i.e. men) who created the religious rules they follow.

We see this tendency to be religious most clearly in the Abrahamic religions. Jews and Muslims each pride themselves on their legalistic obedience to the written law. Unfortunately, however, their hearts are far from God even though they worship him in the flesh. Christians claim to be under grace and not under the law. That is their way of convincing themselves they are not legalistic. They pride themselves on being free in Christ, but they do not realize that they are as bound to legalism as Jews and Muslims are.

The only difference between the three religions is that they follow different codified (i.e. legal) traditions. They each believe that they are following God’s holy word, but they really follow religions that are based on rules made by men. They all honor God with their lips but their hearts are far from him because they do not listen to his voice.

The reason it is important to discuss this issue of legalism in the context of Bible study is found in the tendency to create religion based on our literal interpretations of the Bible. This is exactly why we find so many different religions all supposedly based on the Bible. Just as it is possible to honor God with our lips while our heart is far from him, it is possible to read the Bible while our heart is far from God. And it is when our hearts are far from God that we are most likely to create and practice religion.

Therefore, if we still practice religion after reading the Bible, we have stumbled over the literal words and failed to listen to God’s voice while studying.

APPLY WHAT YOU LEARN TODAY
Hebrews 4:1-12 tells us about the importance of application of what we read to our lives:

Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest remains, let us fear lest any of you be judged to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them; but the message which they heard did not benefit them, because it did not meet with faith in the hearers. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall never enter my rest,'” although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” 5 And again in this place he said, “They shall never enter my rest.” 6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he sets a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, when you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not speak later of another day. 9 So then, there remains a sabbath rest for the people of God; 10 for whoever enters God’s rest also ceases from his labors as God did from his. 11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, that no one fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The emphasis of this scripture on “today” and the ability of the word of God to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart strongly suggests application of what we read in the Bible to our lives now — not on Saturday or Sunday, or at some unknown future time. Bible interpretation that deflects our attention to history or to the fulfillment of promises and prophecies in some unknown future or at a time when some human will teach them paralyzes and handicaps readers from applying truth to their lives today. Therefore, readers must consciously work to reject historical and future orientations in favor of a clear, here and now application of what they read as God speaks to them — especially while reading. If we do not apply what we learn relatively soon (i.e. today), we run the risk of hardening our hearts to receive any future learning.

EVALUATE YOUR GROWTH God is a good teacher and he makes learning fun.
