While this is well and good, there is a problem in the fact that religion teaches that any promise God has made for good or blessings will apply to them unconditionally. This problem is made worse by the fact that religion only teaches about discipline within religious organizations, within a family, self discipline and spiritual disciplines, but never about Godly discipline — except for people who do not share the beliefs and practices of the religious organization.

It is a testimony to the depth and power of religious pride that each and every hierarchical level and denominational strain within Judaism and Christianity sees itself above the need for discipline. Every religion is so convinced of the purity and correctness of its doctrines and traditions that it cannot fathom the possibility that there would ever be a need for God to discipline the religious organization or people who adhere to the organization’s doctrines and teachings. Their religious pride causes them to imagine the need for God to discipline other religions and unbelievers, but they are blind to the truth that they also need Godly discipline.

Such self-righteous attitudes are based on the teachings of men that appeal to gullible people who like to have their itching ears tickled with smooth talk that never hints at the need for discipline. If any religious organization did teach about Godly discipline that might be directed to adherents of the religion, that religion would soon die for lack of followers. That is why discipline is never taught except in the most general way that exhorts people to stop sinning.

The truth is that, from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is full of stories of Godly discipline of the children he loves — including the Messiah. We tend to interpret these stories more as history than instruction, but they are there for us to learn when and how God disciplines/corrects his people.

When reading Bible stories we should always observe that Godly discipline has a good outcome for those who receive it but a bad outcome for those who do not receive it. This is fully consistent with what the Bible says about how God uses discipline to produce righteousness, wisdom, knowledge and understanding in his people.

What we should learn from these scriptures about discipline is that we should desire and seek discipline when we read the Bible. We should always expect to find application of Bible stories and teachings to our own lives. When reading with these expectations clearly in mind we confirm our faith in what God says about the benefits of scripture regarding correction, reproof and training/discipline that leads to righteousness. But if we read with other motives and do not apply the lessons to our own lives so that our hearts are broken when we recognize that our religious activities are sin, and then willingly seek and accept discipline while we study, we prove that we are not children of God who desire the fruits of righteousness.

Combining what God said about the usefulness of scripture with other scripture that tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, we conclude that studying for discipline that transforms us by the renewal of our minds and changes our behaviors in response to the exhortations of the prophets is one way that the law is a tutor that leads us to faith.

Admittedly the books of the prophets are as difficult for us to understand as they were for ancient Israel which was sent into exile because it refused to change its religious ways. But if we do not understand the prophets and change our ways we will suffer the same consequences Israel suffered. If we do not understand what God is trying to teach us when we read and do not turn from our evil ways (i.e. religion), we show that we have hard hearts just like Israel.

In summary, we must learn to read, interpret and apply the entire Bible in terms of discipline designed to turn us from religion to hearing and obeying to God’s voice.

IT’S NOT YOUR GRANDFATHER’S KIND OF DISCIPLINE
We should not be surprised to know that God’s idea of discipline is not what we normally think of in our respective cultures. Most of us think of discipline as punishment for wrong behaviors with respect to some kind of standard (e.g. civil laws, criminal laws, household laws, mores, traditions, etc.) established by people with authority to create laws and enforce them (e.g. government, parents, employers, religions, etc.). God’s discipline is different because it is enforced with respect to the standard of his spiritual laws written on the hearts of New/First Covenant disciples. Men have no part in establishing God’s laws.

A quick, simplistic comparison of cultural discipline and Godly discipline would say that one is managed by external sources to force people to conform to human laws and the other is enforced internally by God to encourage conformance to spiritual laws. Another comparison would say that cultural discipline uses punishment and shame to change fleshly behaviors while Godly discipline uses restorative love and kindness to effect an internal change of heart.

STUDY TIP: See The Heart is the Place.

In all cultures, the standards of behavior are codified as written laws or handed down from generation to generation as oral laws. They are typically rigid and unbending, but they tend to evolve over time along with the culture. These laws include religion which evolves along with the culture in which it is practiced. They are all conceived by and managed by people.

God’s standards are very different. First of all, they do not change over time because God does not change. Secondly, God’s laws are only written on the hearts of people who love God — not written on paper. They are spiritual and cannot be seen with the natural eye. Thirdly, they differ from cultural laws in the important fact that obedience and covenant faithfulness are closely tied to listening to God’s voice — not to human teachers or authorities.

It can be said, therefore, that knowing God’s law is the same thing as knowing his character and his will as revealed exclusively by his voice. Human teachers may think they know a thing or two about God because they have read some or a lot of the Bible. But what they think they know is a mere shadow of the truth that can be revealed only by God directly when he speaks to our hearts. So it can be said that, to a great degree, the purpose of Godly discipline is to correct and expand on the deficiencies and errors of human teachers who have interpreted and applied what they think they know about God in systematic theologies, moral laws/codes and ceremonies/traditions, all of which constitute religion.

Judaism and Christianity are based on human understandings derived from the literal words of the Bible which cannot accurately describe God who is spirit. True knowledge and wisdom about God’s character and ways can only be discerned with spiritual eyes and ears that see way beyond anything that human words can imagine or describe. God describes these differences in starkly contrasting words such as light and dark, clean and unclean, good and evil, holy and profane, spirit and flesh, righteous and unrighteous, and many others.

In the most general terms, the distinctions between what man teaches about God and what God teaches about himself are called Old/First Covenant and New Covenant. Therefore, God’s purpose in discipline is to reteach Old/First Covenant religionists about himself so they have a New Covenant understanding. Therefore, our purpose in reading the Bible should be to discover where our religious beliefs and practices conform to Old/First Covenant religion so that we might repent of them and have our hearts changed so that we no longer desire to be religious.

Since God is spirit and unfathomable by the natural mind, it is impossible to reduce God’s character and will to words on a page. Only a prideful fool would think he or she could do as good a job as God can do to explain his vast character to another person. But hundreds of generations of fools (i.e. false prophets) have tried to do just that in Old/First Covenant religious laws which are covenants of death that are not able to give life. Since God is spirit, his spiritual character and laws can only be represented in a spiritual way (i.e. the New Covenant), which is a very personal and dynamic covenant that is understood only by listening to his voice. This truth is confirmed in the truth that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the spoken word of God (i.e. Christ).

It makes sense to prefer a New Covenant understanding of God that comes from words spoken by God’s own voice that is the source of spiritual life. We should study the Bible, therefore, to learn where we have limited our understanding of God by accepting human teaching about God instead of listening to his voice.

With these understandings we can begin to appreciate why it is so important to God that his people represent his name (i.e. character) accurately to the world. We can also begin to appreciate why God considers failure to listen to his voice to be sin and why he has such strong feelings about false prophets.

All of these subtleties about the spiritual nature of God are necessary background to understand why God sometimes promises that he will bring evil on Israel for failure to listen to his voice. This is hard to accept or understand until we understand that, God considers anyone who prefers to receive instruction from a human instead of listening to his voice to be an idolater who practices evil.

What he promises is that he will discipline his people when they disobey his commands not to follow the religious practices of the people/nations who live around them. He will discipline (i.e. exile) his people when they follow these practices because they are based on human teachings and traditions that nullify God’s spoken word. It is no surprise that he would do this considering that he is jealous of his character (i.e. name) and does not want to be misunderstood, misrepresented and misquoted to the world.

Those of us who have ever been misunderstood and misquoted can begin to appreciate why God would want to take vengeance on those who misrepresent and misquote him. But God does not take revenge through external, physical means. He does it spiritually by piercing our hearts while reading the Bible study. The broken and contrite heart that we experience when he opens our eyes to understand that we have misrepresented and misquoted him through our religious activity and speech is our discipline. Our spiritual sacrifice is what we make when we repent of our religiosity and quit practicing religion.

We conclude from all the above that we will know if we are reading the Bible with our spiritual eyes and ears wide open when our hearts are pierced with grief upon recognition that we have misquoted and misrepresented God through our religious behaviors and speech. Then we will have heard God’s spoken word which gives us spiritual understanding of the thoughts and intentions of our soulish heart. In other words, we will see our hearts as God sees them. What we will see is that we have spent precious time, energy and money following man’s religious ways instead of resting in God’s spiritual ways which have no material, fleshly cost.

LEARN TO RECOGNIZE “IF…, THEN …” CHOICES
We have discussed elsewhere how the law teaches us through difficult language (i.e. parables, dark sayings, proverbs and riddles, figures, words of the wise and riddles, dreams, enigmas and difficult problems, figurative language, dreams and visions, shadows, types and patterns, and symbols, signs and allegories) and how the Bible brings correction that leads to righteousness. These propositions are easiest to recognize when they are presented in order with the “if” condition presented first, and the “then” proposition presented second. Sometimes, however, the order is reversed, and may be obscured with other language in between, but with close inspection they will be found to be “if/then” propositions. We should always understand these kinds of statements as promises to everyone in all generations and not dismiss them as warnings meant only for ancient Israelites because we are all vulnerable to the same kinds of temptations to sin (i.e.religion).

To appreciate the weight of these “if/then” statements, it is helpful to think of everything that God says as a law because he is faithful to accomplish whatever he says he will do. Of course God’s statements are easier to accept as promises when the “then I will …” statement confirms that God will do something good, or positive for his people. We must also accept, however, that “if/then “statements are still promises when the predicted (i.e. promised) action is some kind of discipline/punishment that will cause pain and suffering designed to bring religious people to repentance and righteousness. People who count themselves as “children of God” or “sons of God should not be surprised that God will make these kinds of statements because he has said very clearly that he “disciplines those he loves.” Because this promise was made clearly to all generations, including ours, we should expect to receive Godly discipline through Bible study.

GOD PROMISES BLESSINGS AND CURSES
Christians should be especially careful that they do not dismiss God’s promises about exile and deliverance thinking that these stories apply only to Israel and the Jews or think that they already have all the deliverance from sin that they need. Stories of deliverance and the principles they represent also apply to Gentile believers because God is talking to spiritual Israel which includes all Gentiles — including Christians. Since Muslims claim to follow the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, it can be said that these promises also apply to Islam.

The fundamental lesson here is that everyone can rely on God’s promises, whether for blessing or cursing. These promises are made most clearly and succinctly in Deuteronomy 28 where God specifies the blessings he will bring for obedience to his commandments along with curses he will bring for disobedience. We learn something important about God when we notice that there are fourteen verses of blessings, and fifty-three verses of curses. This tells us, as if we needed to be told, that God is very serious about obedience.

Whether God promises to bless us or curse us, we cannot overlook that they are “conditional” promises. Conditional means that when the terms following the “if” statement are fulfilled by us, the terms following the “then” statement will also be fulfilled by God. In the King James version of the Bible, these “if/then” conditions appear three hundred and seven times. In the New International Version, they appear one hundred and ninety-five times. Needless to say, these conditional promises cannot be ignored. They are critical to recognize when reading because they inform us about consequences for failure to obey God’s voice.

We must keep in mind that these “if/then” propositions are framed in both positive and negative statements. That means that God also promises negative consequences imposed by Him if we do not do what He says we should do or if we do the things he says we should not do. If we believe that God is faithful to His word, we must also believe that His faithfulness extends to imposing negative consequences for disobedience as well as positive consequences for obedience

In effect, what God is saying in these propositions is this: “If you do such and such, then I (God) will do such and such.” This promise should motivate us to acquire a very keen ear for hearing God’s voice. Thus, if while reading, we do not correctly understand what God is trying to tell us, we will find that the blessings we expect do not come and that curses we do not expect do come. Because religionists are much more practiced in hearing the voice of religious leaders than of the voice of God, they predictably receive more curses than blessing.

We understand fully that the idea of negative consequences conflicts with Christian theology that says we are saved by grace and not by works. We don’t argue with that theology, but we do argue with the common understanding of what grace really is and that it is a free, unconditional gift that requires nothing from us to qualify us to receive it.

When we look at all the if/then statements we find that there is a condition for receiving grace: Do not do the works of religion. The way the Bible puts this condition is that grace and faith come when we rest (i.e. cease) from our religious works.

STUDY TIP: See Fourth Commandment and Sabbath, Fasting and Rest for more about resting from religious works.

This is not good news for Jews who pursue righteousness through rigid adherence to religious works — not by faith. Only after we come to complete rest from our religious activity do we receive grace.

The substance of grace is admittedly difficult to grasp. Understanding of it is much easier, however, when we recognize that grace is one of several concepts (i.e. faith, mercy, peace, love, heart, glory, blessing, spirit and truth) that God uses as code words to symbolically represent the New Covenant. With this understanding we can appreciate why it is impossible to receive grace until we are done practicing Old/First Covenant religion for which the many promised curses apply.

Grace and religion can not mix because grace depends of hearing God’s voice and religion is based on human teachings. We will want to be very sure, therefore, that our interpretations of the Bible are in alignment with God’s spiritual voice and not with fleshly, literal, human interpretations.

GOD DISCIPLINES RELIGION WITH RELIGION
Curiously, we find that God’s disciplinary response to Israel’s sin of following the religious practices of other people/nations is to lead them into captivity to those religious people/nations. In effect, he separates himself from his people by exiling them to a place where the people do not know him and worship foreign gods. We see this portrayed specifically in the exiles of Israel to Egypt, Babylon and Assyria. And we see this principle applied repeatedly in the Old Testament when God sends one or more of the surrounding nations (i.e. religions) to punish and defeat Israel when it does not listen to his voice. But we see the pattern most clearly in the list of curses he promises for people who do not obey his spiritual laws.

One way to summarize this pattern is to say that God punishes religion with more religion. This may seem backward at first, but when we stop to look at it from God’s point of view, it makes perfect sense. And if we follow international news at all, we see that this principle is still played out daily in these modern times. God is using excessive, fundamental religionists of one religion to discipline religionists of another discipline.

What we find in religion is that people choose to have men tell them about God rather than listening to God’s voice themselves. This is why God is compelled to discipline religious people. God calls the false prophets they listen to idols and he calls following such men and women idolatry.

STUDY TIP: See Religion is Idolatry.

In God’s language, these idolaters have made treaties with enemies of whom God has said Israel should not do as they do or follow their religious customs. Obviously they are a rebellious people who do not listen to God. If they do not listen to God, how can he get their attention?

He does that by oppressing his people with more and more religion until they get sick and tired of being oppressed and cry out to God for deliverance from bondage to religion. Just like Israel was lured into bondage to Egyptian religion during seven years of plenty when they ate their fill of the forbidden fruit of religion), they became intoxicated with religion and were helpless to deliver themselves from it. When Israel eventually saw the emptiness of religion and how religious leaders (i.e. Pharaoh) deceived, used and exploited them, Israel’s hearts were finally opened to listen to God’s voice at least a little bit. After they cried out, God sent a Messiah to lead them out of bondage into the Promised Land. That story is a parable for the deliverance process that all religious people must experience.

Deliverance depends on crying out and repentance for not listening to God’s voice. They were sent into bondage because they did not listen to his voice, and they are delivered from bondage when they choose to listen to his voice instead of the voices of false prophets/idols. When God hears their cries, he will commence the redemption/deliverance/salvation process and lead them slowly to the Promised Land where they are able to hear his voice and follow his ways because his laws are written on their hearts. He effectively leads them out of the Old/First Covenant to the New Covenant. In Bible language, God delivers, redeems and saves his people from bondage to religion (i.e. Egypt, Babylon) so he can be their God again. But he cannot and will not be their God until they stop listening other gods (i.e. religious leaders who function as false prophets).

This pattern is repeated again and again in the Bible. God represents the process of deliverance in many ways to represent the good news which says that those who are spiritually poor, spiritually blind, and held captive by religion can be healed and set free. It was the gospel of salvation for Israel then and it is the gospel of salvation for Jews and Christians today. It is also the gospel of salvation for anyone who is enslaved by any other religion. Salvation from religion is not available, however, to anyone who is content with religion. Reading for discipline is not possible for those people.

STUDY TO LEARN OBEDIENCE
It is well understood that God places high priority on obedience. He puts the consequences of disobedience in terms of death and curses. When Goid talks about death he is not talking about physical death of the physical body. Rather he uses death to symbolically represent spiritual death that we experience when we are separated from God.

Separation from God is the essence of the concept of being sent into exile to religion as symbolically represented in the exiles to Egypt, Babylon and Assyria discussed earlier. While exile does not necessarily mean immediate, physical death, it may also be associated with be decline and decay in several different life aspects: physical health, emotional health, financial health, relationship health, spiritual health, etc. Whether it is fast or slow, whether it is immediate or imminent, it is still death and it the consequence of being separated from God.

Since God is omnipresent, however, we are never really totally separated from God. Even when we are exiled because of disobedience he is available and ready to hear our cries for help so that we can be delivered from religion. It can be said, therefore, that even when we are exiled, we are still in a covenant relationship with God. It is not the New Covenant which is the better covenant, but it is the Old/First Covenant which is a covenant of death that is obsolete and passing away. This is not good news for religious people. But there is good news nonetheless. And that is that even when we are disobedient in our Old/First Covenant religion, God is faithful and will rescue us when we repent and cry out for deliverance.

He wants to rescue us from religion and will rescue us because What we do, or do not do, matters to God. He loves obedience because obedient people listen to his voice. And he hates disobedience because disobedient people listen to false prophets and serve other gods. This is a point on which God is very particular, but it is also a point which Old/First Covenant religionists do not take seriously.

Curiously, religionists are perfectly willing to be legalistic about religious rules made by men, but they are not willing to obey laws, commandments and precepts made by God. And they practice this double-mindedness while passionately claiming that they love God. God calls such people hypocrites who give honor to him with their mouth while their hearts are far from him.

Through parables and other symbolic language, the Bible informs us about ungodly legalism which is obedience to ungodly rulers (e.g. pastors, rabbis, teachers, etc.) who create and administer religious rules. We see in these stories that people who follow such leaders and the people who follow them come to a bad end at the hands of their enemies. This stands in stark contrast with Godly legalism which exists when God’s spiritual law is written on the human heart. People who listen to God live in peace with their enemies.

God looks at the condition of man’s heart to see if his law is written there. He does not look at exterior, religious activities like people do. Religious people do religious things in order to be seen by others so they can receive praise for what they do. Because religious people don’t know the difference between Old/First Covenant and New Covenant, they give God a bad name through their legalistic religious activity. God is justified, therefore in calling those activities an abomination.

Religious abominations are always done under the leadership of men — not God. God says that religious people love the pleasure of their religion more than they love God and that their activities have only an appearance of godliness and lack spiritual power. He also says that they worship with their mouths while their hearts are far from him. They are grossly deceived about their righteousness and disobedient. When studying, therefore, we must learn to identify with religious characters in their disobedience. If we do not recognize ourselves in scripture that punishes religious behavior, we read for the wrong reasons and are blind to the spiritual truth that God wants to reveal to us about our religious life.

Doing religious things to be noticed is a key feature of Pharisee-ism. Thus anyone who participates in religious activities with the motive of being noticed and commended for practicing their religion may be rightly called a Pharisee. Pharisees find justification for their religious behaviors in strict observance of the literal law of Moses. Since no one wants to be called a Pharisee, we should avoid literal interpretations and legalistic enforcement of rules based on those interpretations. We should avoid, therefore, reading and memorizing scripture so that we can quote it at an opportune time to show off our Bible knowledge and to somehow use that knowledge to influence others.
