INFLUENCE ON AMERICAN CULTURE AND RELIGION
The influence of these beliefs on American thinking is revealed in the PRRI/Brookings Christian Nationalism Survey conducted in early 2023 (see below) which included a battery of five questions about the relationship between Christianity, American identity, and the U.S. government. Respondents were asked whether they completely agree, mostly agree, mostly disagree, or completely disagree with each of the following statements:

STATEMENTS THAT REVEAL AMERICANS’ ATTITUDES ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHRISTIANITY, AMERICAN IDENTITY AND THE US GOVERNMENT PERCENT OF AMERICANS THAT COMPLETELY OR MOSTLY AGREE WITH THIS STATEMENT
  • The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation.
27%
  • U.S. laws should be based on Christian values.
40%
  • If the U.S. moves away from our Christian foundations, we will not have a country anymore.
38%
  • Being Christian is an important part of being truly American.
30%
  • God has called Christians to exercise dominion over all areas of American society.
20%

From this survey we can estimate that perhaps one-third of Americans subscribe to Christian Nationalism doctrines and goals.

A careful look at history tells us that authoritarian movements such as Christian Nationalism have been at work in the United States for at least sixty years and are gaining traction. Elsewhere in the world, they have been evident throughout history in every culture that included a monarchy and religion. In fact, more often than not, monarchies and religion were so closely connected that it was impossible to tell where one began and the other ended. Kings were often considered to be gods and priests ordained kings. This is the kind of religious/political relationship that Christian Nationalists hope to establish in America.

These movements are attractive in all religions because most religions, old or new, large or small, are strong patriarchal, authoritarian institutions. And even those that are led by women are authoritarian.

Evidence of the Christian Nationalism movement internationally can be found in dozens of countries that favor authoritarian government. Even Israel has shown recent signs of moving toward authoritarianism. Thankfully, America is still holding on to its democratic principles even though several American states strongly lean toward authoritarian government, and even though one-third to one-half of all members of Congress favor authoritarian government and otherwise subscribe to Christian Nationalist principles.

For further evidence that America’s democratic style of government is under serious threat, we only need to look at the fruit of conservative politics and legislation. See Recent Posts in the left sidebar for articles by a variety of media about the movement.

In general, Christian Nationalist efforts to limit civil rights and oppress people who are not like them in terms of skin color, ethnicity, politics, education, attitudes about sex, religion or wealth, are gaining strength daily. When their efforts are successful, people who are not like them are oppressed in one way or another.
